It all depends on which tabloid story one believes, as two of the nation’s most ridiculous, least reliable publications have come out with opposing reports this week. See for yourself: On one hand, it makes sense for Middleton to “cozy up to [William’s] best friend’s brother,” as teased above; she’s allegedly angry at him for continually cheating over the years . Then again, the couple reportedly stands to inherit $20 billion if they tie the knot. Could they really turn such a sum down? Of course, these reports are all based on tabloid tales that quote anonymous sources; change facts more often than Bachelor contestants call off engagements; and capitalize whatever headlines will sell the most copies each week. Dina Lohan says her daughter Lindsay was treated like a common criminal during her stint in jail. Not the case, says another girl in there for the same thing. “Lindsay had a lot of special treatment while she was in jail,” Katie A., who did not give her last name, likely because she is also a drunk driving idiot, said. “The entire jail was put on lockdown any time Lindsay left her cell. She spent a lot of time in her cell, but also went to the medical clinic several times a day.” Not only that, but “One employee of the jail had to spend his day searching the entire place for any books by Ernest Hemmingway for Lindsay,” Katie says . “Those are the only books she would read.” Hey, she has discerning taste, okay? Lay off, girl! INMATE 6126 : Lindsay was a special one, sources say. In addition to having the jail cleared while she was on the move, poor Katie A. laments that rich, famous Lohan also got a brand new jail uniform everyday, while other inmates just got a clean pair once a week – if they were lucky! Katie also says Lindsay, who is now in rehab being treated for drug abuse and mental health issues , was granted her commissary order when she was incarcerated July 20 even though all orders are supposed to be placed Monday night. “I checked into Lynwood on the same Tuesday as Lindsay and had to wait until the next week for my commissary order to be placed,” Katie says. “But Lindsay got hers. I was sentenced to 30 days because of a violation of my probation for not attending an alcohol education class,” she adds. “The same thing as Lindsay. Lindsay served 13 days out of her 90 day sentence whereas I had to serve 20 days for a much lesser sentence.” Aww. We would feel bad, but how hard is it to: Call a cab? Go to one BS alcohol education class per week? Not very. Morons.

This summer we have had confirmation that Arctic ice behaviour has everything to do with wind. During June, winds were circulating clockwise in an inwards spiral, which caused ice extent to diminish and ice concentration to remain high. Around July 1, the patterns reversed and we have seen counterclockwise winds pushing ice away from the pole. As a result, ice area/extent has scarcely changed and instead we see a gradual decline in average ice thickness. The video below shows June/July ice movement and thickness. The graph below shows changes in ice thickness during summer over the last five years. Based on past behaviour, we can expect the average ice thickness to flatten sometime in the next two weeks. It should bottom out somewhere between 2006 and 2009. NSIDC has warned me that PIPS is not an accurate measure of ice thickness, though I would have to say it has done remarkably well as a predictor of this summer’s behavior. As you can see below, 2010 is following a track similar to 2006. We are at peak melt season, and there just isn’t much happening in the Arctic. The Arctic Oscillation has turned slightly positive in July, which tends to keep cold air contained in the Arctic and out of lower latitudes. Roman Polanski is a free man! Well, he has been for 30 years-plus now, despite facing a prison term in the United States for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. The Oscar-winning director will remain free, though, thanks to Switzerland’s Federal Department of Justice cited a recent flaw in the U.S. extradition request. The Swiss argue that Roman Polanski, who maintains a home in Switzerland, could reliably expect not to be arrested and deported to face sentencing in America. Basically, since the U.S. knew of his frequent presence there over the last few years but never acted on it, the government is refusing to send him packing . Roman Polanski remains free and in Europe . Polanski, who was recently apprehended and also accused of sexually abusing Charlotte Lewis , has already been released from house arrest, authorities said. The announcement was a dramatic development in a case that has lasted more than 30 years and appeared to be drawing to a conclusion earlier this year. In 1978, Polanski, a French citizen, fled the U.S. hours before he was to be sentenced for having unlawful sex with a minor. He has not set foot in the U.S. since.

In one of the strangest celebrity gossip stories of the year, actor Jeremy London claimed last month that he was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to do drugs . The tale seemed hard to believe, literally, as London’s own family expressed public doubts over its validity and said the former Party of Five star needs help for a substance abuse problem. While London insists the incident took place , he admits in a new interview that he struggles to remain sober. Asked if he’s been clean over the last couple months: “I have had a few drinks here and there. I haven’t been perfect. I’ve been horribly depressed… I’ve slipped and I’ve taken a couple painkillers a couple times.” Continued the actor: “Being an addict sucks, it’s a disease and it’s a day-to-day struggle no matter what. But I’m doing great. I’m sober. This [kidnapping] is absolutely something that could cause someone to fall off the wagon…and I’ve been able to stay sober through it. So that’s a big test to me. I’ve proven that I can do it.” And he has the best possible reason for doing so: a son. “He’s the light of my life, I wouldn’t have made it through this without my son. I’m going to do whatever it takes to stay sober.”
