Katy Perry and Russell Brand are so in a fight. No, seriously, it’s bad. So much so that the spouses of a little more than one year parted on expletive terms and spent the holidays 7,000 miles apart. After planning to fly her family via private jet to husband Brand’s London hometown for the holidays, Perry changed course, opting to fly to Hawaii. The reason? “They had a massive fight,” an insider says. “She was like, ‘F–k you. I’m going to do my own thing.’ Russell replied, ‘Fine, f–k you too.'” Which explains why, come December 25, the record-setting singer was seen splashing in the Pacific Ocean off the island of Kauai sans wedding ring . Meanwhile, Brand was catching up with some pals in a pub in chilly Coverack, Cornwall, without his ring on either. They’re definitely having problems . “They haven’t split up just yet, but things aren’t good,” acknowledged the source, adding that the divorce rumors are untrue, but rooted in reality. “The fighting is getting worse.” At issue? Among other things, explains another source: “Katy doesn’t think that Russell respects her parents’ Christian beliefs or her friends.” UPDATE : Looks like it’s officially over, as the actor filed divorce papers today. MTV News reveals the Nevermind You Never Knew with a week of 20th-anniversary coverage. By James Montgomery Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain in 1991 Photo: MTV News “What are we about? Oh, we’re just this crazy rock and roll band.” That was wild-haired Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic’s summation of the band during their first interview with MTV, on September 30, 1991, and he wasn’t just being modest. At the time, their Nevermind album had been in stores for less than a week, the video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” had just premiered on “120 Minutes” and, really, outside of a few hardy souls in the Pacific Northwest (and various in-the-know journos), no one had really heard of Nirvana, the band that would come to “define an era,” “change the world” or any other hyperbole that would (rightfully) be showered upon them. Back then, they were just another “crazy rock and roll band,” one that was just beginning the voyage from underground to mainstream. Twenty years later, we still marvel at how far they managed to get, and how symbolic that trek truly was. And though they’d released their debut album in 1989, for all intents and purposes, Nirvana’s story really began with Nevermind, which, though it may seem incomprehensible to anyone who lived during the halcyon days of 1991, turns 20 on Saturday. In honor of that anniversary, and the moment where the foundations of rock and popular culture fundamentally shifted, we’re rolling out a week’s worth of coverage — exploring the impact of Nirvana and their wondrous, groundbreaking album, talking to folks who were there the moment everything went global and, of course, mining our tape libraries to unearth rare moments that show Nirvana as they really were: three rather scruffy, decidedly playful guys who often seemed at odds with their own success. Or, as Kurt Cobain put it in a 1993 interview with MTV News: “I wanted to have the adoration of John Lennon but have the anonymity of Ringo Starr. I didn’t want to be a frontman; I just wanted to be back there and still be a rock and roll star at the same time.” To kick things off, we decided to look back at Nirvana’s meteoric rise to fame, as told by the band itself. The above video compiles quotes taken from our vault of Nirvana interviews, starting with that first sit-down and continuing on to the release of their final studio album, 1993’s In Utero. It’s a story that’s been told thousands of times before — as most great tales have been — but never by the members of Nirvana, in their own words. It is appropriately raw, unwashed and revelatory. Just like Nevermind was when it burst forth 20 years ago … and, like all classics, how it still is today. Stick with MTV News all week as we reveal the Nevermind You Never Knew , celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s definitive album with classic footage, new interviews and much more. Brooklyn spitter tells Mixtape Daily success of onetime fellow inmate Maino proved he still ‘had a chance.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Lucky Don Photo: MTV News Fire Starter: Lucky Don Brooklyn spitter Lucky Don had dreams that not even his 10-year jail bid could derail. “I knew how to rap before I went to jail,” he tells Mixtape Daily. “I always knew how to rap.” With the chips stacked against him, Luck found inspiration in BK rapper Maino , whom he met while the two were locked up in New York’s Gowanda Correctional Facility. (Luck was found guilty of shooting at a police officer.) “Me seeing him grow made me feel like I had a chance,” he said. With his mixtape grind in full swing after dropping last year’s DJ Self-hosted The Voice, Don linked up with his friend Maino, as well as Bronx rapper Fred the Godson on the TY Fyffe-produced “Let’s Go (Remix).” The original version of the song featured Luck by himself, and, at first, he set out to deliver his hardest raps over the bouncy club beat. But then he received a bit of friendly advice from the “Hi Hater” MC. “We met up on Atlantic and Bedford [in Brooklyn], I pulled up, put the CD in the car and we were just sitting in his car just listening to the beat over and over again,” Luck recalled. “He was like, ‘Nah, my dude; nah, son. This ain’t one of those beats — later for all that rap stuff right now.’ ” At Maino’s urging, Luck switched up his flow to something that matched the beat. The song soon became so big on New York’s underground that Maino agreed to jump on the remix. Now Don, who’s set to release his second mixtape, The Difference, in June, is finally seeing his dreams come to fruition. “I can’t even lie, I love music, I always loved music. I ain’t gonna sit here and front like, ‘I’m a street n—a and I never really wanted to do this.’ This is what I wanted to do. That other Luck that was locked up and all that, I left him back there. I came home to do music.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Maino
New Gwen Stacy says ‘it was pretty great to be together’ on ‘The Help’ set when she learned the casting news. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Stone Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — In a weird twist of fate, Emma Stone found out she’d be playing Gwen Stacy in the latest installment of “Spider-Man” while on the set of “The Help” co-starring the previous franchise’s Gwen, Bryce Dallas Howard. “I found out while I was on set of ‘The Help,’ ” she said about the Andrew Garfield-starring “Amazing Spider-Man” during “The Help” Q&A session for MTV’s Sneak Peek Week. “It was pretty great to be together for that.” Howard said she was almost as excited about the casting as Stone was. “Representing as redheads!” she proclaimed onstage in front of an excited crowd at the Pacific Design Center. “I’m one of those people that goes online and reads gossip about movies, so pretty early on, there was some buzz,” she said, adding that she stormed into Stone’s trailer the minute she heard the news. “I was stoked.” With so much buzz about the new “Spider-Man” film, it seems that Stone will be just as surprised as fans to see the flick. “I’ve seen nothing, I promise. I’ve seen small action sequences for the 3-D, and it looked terrible,” she joked. “I really haven’t seen [anything].” So what did Stone do to research the role of Gwen — besides leaning on Howard for her first-hand account, of course. “I read a pretty comprehensive ‘Death of the Stacys’ book … and it’s a really amazing book to learn the story of Captain Stacy and Gwen Stacy,” she said. “And I’ve read a various amount of comics.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ?
