Olbermann Slams Anti-Helen Thomas Rabbi in ‘Worst Person’ Segment, But Not Helen Thomas

On Wednesday’s Countdown show, MSNBC host Keith Olbermann included Rabbi David Nessenoff – famous for exposing Helen Thomas’s anti-Semitic beliefs in a video of her posted on his Web site – for inclusion in his “Worst Person in the World” segment because Rabbi Nessenoff’s site also includes a video which the MSNBC host viewed as being racist toward Mexicans. Olbermann also misstated the severity of Thomas’s declaration that Israeli Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine,” as many in the pro-Palestinian movement consider all of Israel to be part of “Palestine.” But Olbermann suggested that she was only referring to Israeli Jews who live in settlements in the Palestinian territories: “Runner up, Rabbi David Nessenoff. He is the man who precipitated the end of Helen Thomas’s career, got the video of her saying Israelis in settlements in Palestine should go home to Poland and Germany and the U.S. It was sad. It was narrow minded. I can`t defend it. On the other hand, Rabbi Nessenoff doesn`t exactly have clean hands.” Notably, the Countdown host had passed on featuring Helen Thomas in his “Worst Person” segment for her anti-Semitic remarks, explaining on Monday that he was thinking of “reluctantly” including her in that night’s show but chose not to because she had resigned from her position. Olbermann, on Monday: “But first, with a thank you to Helen Thomas for doing the right thing and bowing out before I had to reluctantly put her out this list, get out your pitchforks and torches, time for tonight`s “Worst Persons in the World.” Also of note, Rabbi Nessenoff is currently posting on his Web site examples of anti-Semitic hate mail – laced with profanity – that the site has received since outing Thomas’s anti-Israel comments. Nessenoff reports, “We received over 25,000 pieces of hate mail.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Wednesday, June 10, Countdown show on MSNBC: KEITH OLBERMANN: Runner up, Rabbi David Nessenoff. He is the man who precipitated the end of Helen Thomas’s career, got the video of her saying Israelis in settlements in Palestine should go home to Poland and Germany and the U.S. It was sad. It was narrow minded. I can`t defend it. On the other hand, Rabbi Nessenoff doesn`t exactly have clean hands. On his Web site, he posted a video of himself doing a weather report, delivered in a really bad Hispanic dialect that is flatly racist. This would be the rabbi on the left. RABBI DAVID NESSENOFF, PLAYING A CHARACTER WITH MEXICAN ACCENT: That’s a really nice map. Last time I saw a map like that I was an immigration officer with three Gringos down on the Mexican border. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: God bless America. NESSENOFF: My friend, God blessed America. But he`s sure not looking out for Mexico. I haven`t seen God down there in a long time. OLBERMANN: An opinion writer had to retire from opinion writing because she gave an opinion. Shouldn`t a man of God have to retire from being a man of God when he starts insulting some of God`s children?

U.N.‘s Ban Wants ‘Credible’ Investigation of Flotilla Raid

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon is calling for Israel to accept international participation in an investigation of the deadly flotilla assault that killed 9 activists in international waters. Israeli authorities have rejected the idea of an international tribunal and maintained that they will conduct an internal investigation. BBC: But a UN spokesman said Mr Ban still hoped for “credible international involvement” in the investigation to ensure it was “prompt, credible, impartial and transparent”. He said they had not received an official rejection from Israel. On Sunday Israel’s ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, told US broadcaster Fox News that Israel has the ability and the right to investigate its own military. Egypt Pumps Poison Gas Into Gaza Tunnels, Kills 4 People

By RIZEK ABDEL JAWAD , Associated Press GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Egyptian forces pumped gas into a cross-border tunnel used to smuggle goods into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing four Palestinians, Hamas officials said. Egypt has been under pressure to seal off the hundreds of tunnels that are a key economic lifeline for the blockaded Palestinian territory but which are also used to bring in weapons for the Islamic militant group. Israel and Egypt have kept Gaza’s official border crossings closed since Hamas seized control of the coastal strip in 2007 from forces loyal to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who now only governs in the West Bank. A Hamas security official in charge of the tunnel area along the border said the Egyptians filled the passage with some type of crowd dispersal gas. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give his name. The Hamas Interior Ministry later said in a statement the gas used to try to clear the tunnel was poisonous. Besides those killed, six people were injured, it said. “The Interior Ministry confirms that the citizens’ cause of death was the Egyptian security forces spraying poison gasses into one of the tunnels,” the statement said without elaborating. A doctor at a hospital in the Gaza border town of Rafah, Hamdan Abu Latifa, said the dead smugglers suffocated. An Egyptian border security official refused to comment Wednesday. Egyptian security forces have sprayed gas into tunnels before, according to Hamas officials and tunnel operators. But Wednesday’s incident was the first time people have died as a result, they said. A Hamas official demanded an explanation. “This is a terrible crime committed by Egyptian security against simple Palestinian workers who were trying to earn their daily bread,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum to The Associated Press. “It was a killing in cold blood. Hamas and all the Palestinian people condemn it strongly.” http://www.gpexaminer.com/?p=107 added by: gpexaminer

Activists Clash with Israeli Troops: Raw Video

At least one person was arrested on Tuesday (April 27) after scuffles broke out between anti-barrier activists and Israeli border police at the construction site of the controversial West Bank barrier. Approximately a dozen activists disrupted construction of the barrier, blocking a bulldozer near the village of al-Walaja in the West Bank. One activist fought with police as they tried to arrest him. He was eventually handcuffed and led away by the security forces. Anti barrier demonstrators linked arms and sat in front of the path of the bulldozer, temporally halting construction activities. Israeli border police eventually broke up the protest, carrying foreign activists away from the construction site. Israel began building its barrier of fences and walls at the height of the Palestinian uprising that began in 2000. The wall now runs along most of the West Bank border, encroaching at many points into Palestinian territory. Israeli leaders say the barrier is a temporary obstacle, and could be removed once a peace agreement with the Palestinians is signed and attacks on Israel cease. The International Court of Justice say the barrier is illegal and should be taken down because it crosses occupied territory. added by: ctv

Palestinians test out Gandhi-style protest

“It is strangely quiet. About 40 mainly Palestinian protesters face off with a line of armed Israeli soldiers over coils of razor wire. They calmly explain they want access to land Israel has confiscated to build its West Bank barrier. Chanting begins, followed by impassioned speeches in Hebrew, English and Arabic. “You soldiers standing here, blocking Palestinians from walking on their own land, you need to think about what you're doing,” lectures one young woman. “What will you tell your children?” asks an older man. The troops stare impassively ahead. 'Excuse to shoot' Beit Jala is one of a growing number of Palestinian villages holding regular protests against Israel's occupation of the West Bank. Many end with Palestinian youths throwing stones and Israeli troops firing tear gas and sometimes rubber-coated bullets. But organisers in Beit Jala, such as Ahmad Lazza of the Holy Land Trust who trains protesters in non-violent tactics, are determined to keep things peaceful. This is partly out of personal belief, and partly about avoiding escalation with Israeli soldiers. “You don't want him to feel threatened, because it is a very good excuse for him to shoot you,” he says. Protesters in the area have recently chained themselves to olive trees to protect them from Israeli bulldozers and rebuilt a destroyed garden on land cleared for the barrier – which Israel says is for security, but Palestinians see as a land grab. They have also forced their way into the main checkpoint keeping Bethlehem Palestinians from Jerusalem…” http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/8618868.stm added by: Mariased

The Na’vi Protest For Palestine

Taking a cue from James Cameron's Avatar , Palestinian protesters painted themselves blue and protested in the streets of a village called Bilin. Isreali police forces took a cue from the film as well, responding with excessive and unwarranted force. The Best Links: Via Laughing Squid Watch
