Today Show Marks One Year Anniversary of Palin’s Decision to ‘Cash In’

To mark the one year anniversary of Sarah Palin stepping down from her duties as governor of Alaska, NBC’s Norah O’Donnell, on Friday’s Today show, recounted for viewers what the former vice presidential candidate is doing, namely “cashing in.” Accompanied by a “cha-ching” sound effect O’Donnell ran down Palin’s various TV and book deals. And while O’Donnell also noted Palin has been very effective stumping for GOP candidates in the primaries she was careful to note that the “polarizing” Palin had “limits to her appeal,” as she cited an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll saying 52 percent view her political endorsements negatively. Along with the poll and TV and book deals, O’Donnell also included “her teenage daughter’s tumultuous relationship with Levi Johnston,” and “her rage” at author Joe McGinnis “who’s moved directly next door to her Wasilla home ” as negatives. How exactly Palin’s “rage” at a writer/stalker moving next door to her family home could be seen as a limit to her appeal wasn’t fully explained. The following is the full segment as it was aired on the July 2 Today show: MATT LAUER: It was a year ago tomorrow that Sarah Palin made the surprise announcement that she was resigning as the governor of Alaska. And a lot has changed in the past 12 months. NBC’s Norah O’Donnell has details on that. Norah, good morning. [On screen headline: “‘Going Rogue’ Sarah Palin, One Year After Resigning As Governor”] NORAH O’DONNELL: A lot has changed. You know she may be the most controversial and polarizing figure in politics today, but she’s also helped elect some new stars in the Republican Party, while at the same time becoming a multi-millionaire. One year ago Sarah Palin shocked everyone, announcing she would resign as governor of Alaska with 18 months still left on her term. SARAH PALIN: It would be apathetic to just kind of hunker down and go with the flow. We’re fishermen. We know that only dead fish go with the flow. PAT BUCHANAN: If Sarah Palin was thinking about being President of the United States, she’s taking a real step backward. O’DONNELL: But if anything, Palin has surged forward. More visible- JAY LENO: Thanks for coming! How are you doing? O’DONNELL: And possibly more influential than ever. PALIN: How is that hopey-changey stuff working out for ya? O’DONNELL: Especially in recent Republican primaries, backing Tea Party candidates across the country and women like South Carolina’s Nikki Haley. PALIN: Nikki had the backbone to vote against taking the Obama stimulus money. O’DONNELL: Her power is fueled but her political action committee with a deep war chest and a vast army of Facebook and Twitter followers. ANNE KORNBLUT, THE WASHINGTON POST: She does still have a very loud megaphone when she tweets, when she’s on Facebook. She still has the power to affect a policy debate when she wants to. O’DONNELL: But there may be limits to her appeal. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows that 52 percent see her political endorsements negatively. And for Sarah Palin, the family dramas that captivated America during the campaign have continued. There’s her teenage daughter’s tumultuous relationship with Levi Johnston. PALIN: I hear he goes by the name Ricky Hollywood now. O’DONNELL: Her rage at an author who’s moved directly next door to her Wasilla home, where he’s writing a book about her. JOE MCGINNISS: She has pushed a button and unleashed the hounds of hell and now we’re out there slavering and barking and growling. O’DONNELL OVER “CHA-CHING” SOUND EFFECT: The national fascination with the Palins has not abated and Sarah Palin is cashing in, going from $125,000 a year to an estimated $12 million. There’s her blockbuster bestseller Going Rogue, on that deal, $7 million. Her own TV show on TLC, on that deal, $2 million. And an exclusive contract with Fox News channel, $1 million. And as for her speeches, she makes as much as $100,000 a pop and even those aren’t without controversy. PALIN: Got my water? Do I have my straws? I want my straws. And I want them bent, please. Thank you. At least that’s what I read in some of the lame stream media outlets, is that I was demanding straws. O’DONNELL: Well her next project is a new book called America By Heart. It’s due in November and she is also expected to be out there again on another book tour, Matt. And the crowds come out for her. LAUER: Oh and we continue to talk about her. There’s no question about it. Norah, thanks very much. O’DONNELL: You’re welcome. LAUER: Good to see you.

Chris Matthews: ‘Is Sarah Palin The Most Important Republican In The Country?’

A truly extraordinary thing happened on this weekend’s “The Chris Matthews Show”: the host asked his panel if former Alaska governor Sarah is the most important Republican in the country right now. What made this even more surprising was how his guests — CNN’s Gloria Borger, Politico’s John Harris, the BBC’s Katty Kay, and former “CBS Evening News” host Dan Rather — seemed to feel she was. Most bullish on Palin was Rather who said, “I wouldn’t underestimate her…If she decides to run, it would be hard to bet against her for the nomination.” For his part, Matthews played a little bit of a misdirection with his viewers by predictably bashing Palin during the program’s introduction (multiple videos follow with highlights and commentary):  CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: She was a governor that couldn’t take it anymore. Ridiculed as a Bozo, all she could do was cash in get what she could on the way off the stage. But a year later, with zillions in her pocket, she’s an even better bet to run. As the opening segment about President Obama and Generals McChrystal and Petraeus came to an end, Matthews told his viewers:  MATTHEWS: Before we break, it was a year ago that Sarah Palin called that surprise news conference out there in the lawn in Wasilla to announce she was quitting as Alaska governor. David Letterman had a lot of fun with that. What followed was one of Letterman’s typically derogatory “Top Tens” about Palin: After the commercial, Matthews played a clip from Palin’s resignation speech last July: SARAH PALIN: With this announcement that I’m not seeking re-election, I determined it is best to transfer the authority of governor, to Lieutenant Governor Parnell. MATTHEWS: Transfer the authority? Well, she quit. A lot of people thought that was a short-sighted move, that quitting would end her career as an elected politician. Well, a year since then Palin’s made well over $12 million. Her first book “Going Rogue” was the year’s number one best-seller, made her $7 million in the advance. She gets $100,000 a speech, and Fox signed her to a TV deal. Besides getting to be rich, has she become, I would ask you open-ended, is she the most important Republican right now in the country? Kay was the first to answer, making some surprisingly positive comments about the former Governor and her success assisting Republican candidates in recent primaries.  When Matthews commented that Palin seems to be only backing winners, Borger countered that maybe they’re winning BECAUSE of her support.  For his part, Harris was a little less enthusiastic, but also gave an uncharacteristically upbeat view of the former vice presidential candidate. But the best was yet to come when Rather got his turn: DAN RATHER: Well, she’s not running at the moment for President. But I wouldn’t underestimate her. She’s a version now of a Deacon with four aces. She can go a lot of different ways. She is playing an almost perfect hand. If she wants to stay a power in the Party, make a lot of money and not run, she can do that. I wouldn’t underestimate her even for 2012 for one second. If she decides to run, it would be hard to bet against her for the nomination. MATTHEWS: Good point. Is she Richard Nixon? Is she going around and picking up chits, proving that she can deliver, carefully selecting winners, avoiding losers when they’re on the right, so that day after this election, like Nixon did in ’66, “Look what I did for the party, I should be the nominee?” RATHER: And goes into the convention with maybe thirty percent of the votes. Imagine that. For approaching two years, America’s press have been mercilessly eviscerating this woman with every opportunity. Now, with Obama plummeting in the polls, and Democrats looking like they’re in a lot of trouble in the upcoming midterm elections, suddenly Palin is not only possibly the most important Republican in the country, but is also a legitimate candidate for President. Is hell freezing over, or is something else at play here?

Crime Pays: CNN Hires Prostitute-Plying Ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer to Star in Debate Show with Kathleen Parker

The rumors were true. CNN is without shame. They are hiring disgraced Democrat Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the hypocritical “Sheriff of Wall Street” who hired high-priced hookers, as a talk-show host. Spitzer’s co-host will be pseudo-conservative columnist Kathleen Parker, who won the Pulitzer Prize for being a conservative-basher . CNN’s press release said “she describes herself as a ‘rational’ conservative.” That’s a nice way to endear her to the “irrational” conservatives who might have considered watching this show. It’s set up to be Liberal Lion vs. ‘Rational’ Lamb. Jon Klein, president of CNN/U.S., the man who canceled the long-running left-right show “Crossfire” after Jon Stewart lamented they needed to “stop, stop, stop, stop, hurting America,” has reinvented the format as just the latest liberal-media attempt to rehabilitate Spitzer’s career. Klein said in a statement: “Eliot and Kathleen are beholden to no vested interest – in fact, quite the opposite: they are renowned for taking on the most powerful targets and most important causes.” They’re actually spinning this “unbeholden” Spitzer as a moralist and guardian of the public interest. CNN’s press release suggested that little prostitution thing is hardly a disqualification for such a “well-respected political mind.” They even re-used the ridiculous “Sheriff” moniker: Spitzer, a Democrat who resigned as governor in March 2008 after acknowledging visiting a prostitute, is a well respected political mind and a take-no-prisoners prosecutor who has been often referred to as the “Sheriff of Wall Street.” Parker was required by her new job to kiss Spitzer’s ring: “I’m thrilled by the opportunity to discuss the issues that matter to me — and that aren’t heard often enough on television — in a conversation with one of the nation’s most brilliant, fearless and original thinkers. With Eliot Spitzer as my co-host, Wall Street and Main Street will finally meet. It can’t possibly be boring.” Last year, Parker also felt pain for Spitzer in a column knocking David Letterman for his nasty Sarah Palin joke (ever the balancer): Everyone knows by now that Letterman made fun of the Palin family’s trip to New York last week. He quipped that Palin’s daughter got “knocked up” by Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez during the seventh inning. Unable to stop his slide into the gutter, he said the hardest part of the visit was keeping Eliot Spitzer away from her daughter. How will this show cover the next politican sex scandal? Or are they hoping CNN will be the “hot corner” on those stories now?  James Poniewozik at Time has the first boos from the media establishment:  The first is not that Spitzer has been chosen despite his sex scandal. It’s that he seemingly was chosen, at least in part, because of the scandal: that is, because of the short-term blast of notoriety and buzz that he will bring with him. Now, for all I know, CNN genuinely sees special and distinctive broadcasting talent in Spitzer, but if they do, it’s eluded me in his long recent history as commentator and guest-host on CNN and MSNBC, where—to my ears, anyway—he comes off grating and supercilious. If he didn’t come with the name and the headlines, I have a hard time believing he’d been chosen on the basis of ability alone. (As for Parker, I’m not familiar enough to say whether she’s a good choice or not, though her résumé is strong enough. But I do have to guess that—call me cynical—given Spitzer’s history it would have been hard for CNN to even consider pairing him with a man. Not that the underrepresentation of men in cable news is exactly a problem, but the idea that pairing Spitzer with a woman makes his choice any better is just icky.)

Newsweek Takes Another Shot at Palin on Cover: ‘Saint Sarah’; Palin Responds, Answers Breast Implant Charge

Not this again. There is obviously not enough going on in the world for Newsweek magazine this week because once again Sarah Palin is on the cover. Palin, the former governor of Alaska and the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee was also on the cover of Newsweek back in November 2009 , in running shorts. This time she is featured as “Saint Sarah: What’s Palin’s appeal to conservative Christian women says about feminism and the future of the religious right” in Newsweek’s June 21 issue. Palin is depicted with halo on the cover for the story written by Lisa Miller , which attempts to rationalize Palin’s convictions about the issue of abortion and her Christian faith. However, Palin didn’t think too highly of Newsweek’s gesture. She responded on Fox News’ June 11 broadcast of “On the Record with Greta van Sustren.” “Haven’t seen it, but if the title and what I hear about the content is any indication of where Newsweek is going, it is no wonder Newsweek is doing so poorly,” Palin said. “People are not reading that stuff. It is not relevant. It’s not interesting stuff that they are making up and writing and that’s why they are going down.” Video Below Fold Another incredible charge that has surfaced in left-wing media outlets as of late was that Palin had gotten breast implants . Palin responded to host Greta van Sustren, but not without first taking a few shots at those who propagated the rumor. “Well, first Greta, you know why we love you?” Palin said. “Because you’re not afraid to ask the questions and I got to respect you for asking that question because I know that Boob-gate is all over the Internet right now because there are a lot of, I guess bored idle bloggers and reporters with nothing else to talk about. And I think some of those folks, too – they need to perhaps grab a shovel, go down to the Gulf, volunteer to help cleanup and save a whale or something instead of reporting on such stupid things like that.” And as for the implants? She cleared that up with very implicit answer. “No, I have not had implants,” she said. “I can’t believe we are even talking this. I think a report like that is about as real and truthful as those reports that Todd and I are divorcing or that I bought a place in the Hamptons or that Trigg is not my own child. And we still put up with that kind of garbage, too – even the mainstream media, Greta. It is amazing.”

Pictures Spark Sarah Palin Boob Job Rumors

Did Sarah Palin get a boob job? Doubtful, but photos surfacing in recent days showing the former V.P. candidate looking noticeably curvier have the web buzzing. “It’s absolutely ridiculous,” a Palin insider tells Us Weekly of the rumor, which started after Palin’s visit to Sunday’s Belmont Stakes horse race in Belmont, N.Y. Is it ridiculous, though? Check out the Sarah Palin pictures below, from last year and then this past weekend. Doesn’t really disprove the rumor, does it? Is Sarah Palin spending those huge paychecks on … well, see above? If you think this is nonsense and attributable to the angle and/or choice of clothing, you could be right. But consider this evidence from the D.C. gossip blog Wonkette: Straight women spend up to 37 percent of their time evaluating the breasts of their friends, enemies, peers and strangers, keeping detailed mental records. They weigh factors such as pregnancy, wardrobe, diet, exercise regime, miraculous undergarments and cosmetic surgery professionals quoted in tabloids. At least two people with experience in having breasts say that Sarah Palin sure looks like she was trotting out some new work at the race on Sunday. We’re sold.

Did Sarah Palin Get New Boobs?

Sarah Palin is obviously taking extra measures now that Joe McGinnis, a writer who’s working on a tell-all book about her, has moved in next door to her in Alaska. Clearly, when Sarah is seen…

Sarah Palin to Joe McGinniss: Beat it, Stalker!

Sarah Palin is understandably far from pleased that writer Joe McGinniss rented the house next door to her while authoring a book about the former governor. But stalking allegations? Really, Sarah? That’s pretty low … but from someone who demands straws that bend at speaking engagements, are you shocked? McGinniss said on the Today show this morning that despite accusations from the political lightning rod, he’s not harassing them. Quite the opposite, in fact. “If I lived here and did something creepy, if I did what Sarah Palin is suggesting, that would be creepy,” McGinniss said. “I’m not observing them at all.” “I don’t care what they do in the privacy of their own home,” he continued. “I’m here to talk to people who have known them for 40 years in Wasilla.” McGinniss claims he got a good deal on a rental that happens to border the Palins’ property, and would have taken it if “Sarah Palin lived on the moon.” WELCOME TO WASILLA! Sarah Palin is far from pleased with her new neighbor . True or not, the 67-year-old writer is next door, leaving the maverick concerned for her privacy and questioning McGinniss’s motives … on Facebook, natch. “Wonder what kind of material he’ll gather while overlooking Piper’s bedroom, my little garden, and the family’s swimming hole?” Sarah Palin wrote online. McGinniss denies he did any of that, or that he is trying to drum up publicity for his book, claiming he told no one outside his family where he was living. “Then Sarah hysterically puts up this Facebook page with all sorts of ugly innuendo, which frankly is revolting,” he says. “She has created all the publicity.” McGinniss, known mostly as a true-crime writer, has reportedly received death threats thanks to Palin triggering outrage from right-wing media outlets. Palin “unleashed the hounds of hell,” he says, comparing her tactics to that of Nazi troopers in the ’30s. Maybe he should send over a nice fruit basket?
