Alonso’s Oscar Picks: The Kids Are All Right, The Oscars Are Not

When I was a little kid, I really, really, really loved the Oscars. For a wee gay movie-obsessed lad growing up in the suburbs of Atlanta, it was the sort of annual event to be anticipated with both excitement and reverence. Every year when we’d get the TV Guide issue with the full-page “Close-Up” box on the Oscars, featuring thumbnail pictures of the ten Best Actor and Actress nominees, my heart would race. Before I was old enough that my parents would let me stay up late and watch the whole thing (this was back when the show began at 9 p.m. on the East Coast), I somehow convinced them to nudge me awake at midnight, tell me who won in the major categories, and then I’d roll over and go back to sleep.

In White Folks News: Justin Bieber Almost Gets Four Young Fans Suspended From School!!

Bieber fever has reached an all-time high, or low, depending on how you look at it. Parents, hide your kids. The Bieber Street Gang is mobbing through your child’s middle school! According to TMZ reports : Move over Crips and Bloods — Justin Bieber is so bad-ass, he can get Yonkers high school girls suspended for wearing a J.B. t-shirt, because school officials say it has “gang” written all over it. Four teenage girls at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, NY tell TMZ they attended a premiere for Justin Bieber’s movie on Tuesday … then wore their homemade t-shirts, emblazoned with “Bieber Krew,” to school the next day (see above). The girls say school security ordered them to remove the shirts or cover them up because they were “gang-related.” The students say they were also threatened with suspension. The principal then called a meeting with the girls, their parents and the security guards. One of the parents tells TMZ the principal told them the t-shirts were “inappropriate for school because they were gang-related” and the girls would be suspended if they wore them again. One parent tells us, “It’s ridiculous. They’re good kids who love Justin Bieber.” A rep for the school tells TMZ, “Students at Roosevelt High School were not banned from wearing shirts displaying the image of Justin Bieber, nor were they accused of being in a gang.” Someone’s fibbing. Damn, you can’t do anything in these schools nowadays without someone being offended. Its enough to make a Bieber go craaaaazaaay!

James Franco Gives Mad Props to Porn Stars

James Franco is officially an Oscar nominee . But that’s not why the actor is making headlines today. Franco is in the news due to his unusual comments during a Newsweek -hosted discussion with fellow nominees Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Michelle Williams, Annette Bening and Nicole Kidman. During the chat, Franco somehow steered the conversation to his experience playing the role of Ray J when he was 19, saying: “I think if anybody who has made a sex tape knows, what feels best doesn’t always look best. I remember when I was 19 doing that, and then watching it back and thinking, oh, that looks horrible… You have a lot of respect for those actors in pornography, because they are really not just doing it, they’re really selling it.” True. But then they’re getting it on with Charlie Sheen . Sort of tips the scale back into the disrespect side of things, doesn’t it?

Skins Creator Responds to Critics: The Truth Hurts!

Skins creator Brian Elsley has a message for critics of the new MTV series, which he calls “a very serious attempt to get to the roots of young people’s lives.” In a lengthy statement to MTV News, Elsley called Skins a “very simple and in fact rather old fashioned” show that isn’t pushing the envelope for no reason. “It deals with relationships, parents, death, illness, mental health issues, the consequences of drug use and sexual activity,” he writes. NOT FEELING IT : Skins’ critics are many, but its creator won’t back down . “It’s just that these are characterized from the point of view of the young people who write the show and have a very straightforward approach to the experience; it tries to tell the truth. Sometimes that truth can be a little painful.” The Parents Television Council put out a release after the premiere, calling Skins ” the most dangerous television show for children that we have ever seen.” Our critic had a different issue with last night’s episode – it just sucked . In any case, Skins has lost five advertisers since its premiere just two weeks ago, but that doesn’t deter Elsley’s. Here’s his full open letter to viewers: “Skins is a very simple and in fact rather old fashioned television series. It’s about the lives and loves of teenagers, how they get through high school.” “How they deal with their friends, how they circumnavigate some of the complications of sex, relationships, educations, parents, drugs and alcohol.” “The show is written from the perspective of teenagers, reflects their world view, and this has caused controversy both in the UK and the USA.” “In the UK, viewers and commentators very quickly realized that although there are some sensational aspects to the show, Skins is actually a very serious attempt to get to the roots of young people’s lives. It deals with relationships, parents, death, illness, mental health issues, the consequences of drug use and sexual activity.” “It is just that these are characterized from the point of view of the many young people who write the show and has a very straightforward approach to their experiences; it tries to tell the truth. Sometimes that truth can be a little painful to adults and parents.” “Consequences do flow from incorrect or selfish behavior but in the show, these are shown to be unexpected, hard to predict, and more to do with the loss of friendship than anything else, which in any context, is a disastrous outcome.” “We proceed from the idea, not that teenagers are inherently likely to misbehave, but rather that they are intensely moral and disposed to make judgments on their own and others’ behaviour. Sometimes, but not always, they get things wrong. In this teenagers are remarkably similar to adults. Their morals may not be the same as those of their parents and teachers, but they are nevertheless, highly developed and active in their world.” “When viewers have taken the time to watch the show in a little more depth, they are less concerned about the behavior of the characters. Teenagers can be loyal, supportive, dedicated, focused, and capable of making informed value judgments about their lives. In the pilot episode of Skins, it’s possibly easy to overlook the story wherein a young boy sets off to a party to sell drugs and have sex, but in fact, does neither of these things, because, he senses that he has been manipulated by friends and does not feel ready to have sex with someone he does not know properly.” “Skins is a traditionally made television series which has won countless international awards and gained a worldwide audience for stories about the joy, misery and challenges of being a teenager. The show has been used in anti-drug campaigns, has drawn praise for its portrayal of mental health issues and explorations of bereavement, sexuality, bullying and gender stereotyping.” “I have lost count of the letters we have been sent by viewers who tell us that they have been able to approach their parents or teachers with their difficulties after watching the show. It is something that we take a great deal of pride in and which can unfortunately be eclipsed by some of the negative attention.” “Our approach is not careless. We’ve created a supportive and protective environment for everyone working on the show. And of course abide by the law, and give respect to our work colleagues who in this case, are young energetic and exciting people with so much to offer to an imperfect world.”

Kate Middleton Quits Her Job

Kate Middleton has joined the ranks of the world’s unemployed. But don’t feel too sorry for the princess-to-be. She likely won’t be on the streets any time soon. With just over three months until she gets hitched to Prince William, Middleton has left her job as project manager for her family’s party planning company to “concentrate full-time on preparing to become a member of the royal family,” according to an aide. For years, Middleton had worked as a website designer and photographer for Party Pieces, her parents’ company. She also helped coordinate events, a skill that ought to come in handy this spring. We somehow doubt anything Kate helped organize was the size of her April wedding, however. Over one billion people are expect to witness the event.

PTC Demands Federal Investigation of MTV, Skins

MTV’s new sex-obsessed, drug-heavy show Skins is not popular with the PTC . But the Parents Television Council is doing more than firing off a press release this time. They’re calling for a federal investigation into child porn violations. The PTC wants the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Senate and House Judiciary Committees to investigate Skins ‘ underage stars in graphic sex scenes. The group says besides sexual content involving stars as young as 15, there were 42 depictions and references to drugs and alcohol in the Skins premiere . “It is clear that Viacom has knowingly produced material that may well be in violation of [several anti-child pornography laws],” the PTC said in the letter. The real issue? The show is basically a carbon copy of the British version and sort of eats it. But think it crosses the line? Watch the trailer and judge: MTV’s Skins – Official Trailer
