It was one of the most enduring images from Michael’s bizarre life – stepping out with his kids hidden behind masks – at the time and to this day. Paris Jackson , 14, tells Oprah Winfrey she was as perplexed as anyone. “I was really confused,” Paris admits in an interview to air Sunday. “I didn’t get why I was always wearing a mask. But I understand it now.” “The reason why my dad would want our faces to be covered … it was so when we went out without him we wouldn’t be recognized .” Thanks to her late father’s efforts, she says, “We had a normal childhood,” including trips to the mall, the arcade and Chuck E. Cheese’s. “He told us that he didn’t really have a childhood,” says Paris. “He would always be stuck in the studio singing while the kids were out playing.” “Really, he just wanted us to have that. ” One thing’s for sure, the King of Pop really knew what he was doing in the child-rearing department. After a cloistered childhood, Paris, 13, the only daughter of late pop icon Michael Jackson , opened up to Ellen about her formerly sheltered life and how her dad’s music inspired her acting. In excerpts released before the airing, Paris explained that her dad helped her prepare for her upcoming first movie role, in which she’ll play Lundon in “Lundon’s Bridge and the Three Keys,” an adaptation of the fantasy series based on writer Dennis Christen’s novels. “When I was really little my dad was in the movie ‘Moonwalker’ and I knew he could sing really well but I didn’t know he could act,” she said. “I saw that and I said, ‘Wow, I want to be just like him.’ ” She said Michael also gave her at-home acting lessons. “We would do improv together. He would give us little scenarios. He would (say), ‘OK, in this scene you’re going to cry’ and I’d cry on the spot.” In one of the most (literally) revealing moments, Paris explained what it felt like for herself and her siblings, Prince and Blanket, to wear disguises for most of their young lives. “I’m like, ‘This is stupid. Why am I wearing a mask?’ But I kind of realized the older I got like he only tried to protect us and he’d explain that to us too,” she said. The masks, in fact, helped the three kids live as normal a life as they possibly could considering that their dad was one of the most-sought-after paparazzi targets on earth. “I do have like a regular childhood,” she said. “I mean, I’m treated the same. When I came to [my new school] they didn’t know who I was. I was like, ‘Yes, I have a chance to be normal.'” When asked if she realized how big a deal her dad was when she was a child, Paris admitted, “I just thought, ‘He’s got a few songs out,’ but I figured everyone did that.” In the action-animation hybrid “Lundon,” Paris will voice the lead character, a human, in a fantasy adventure in which “sea magic turns a dolphin into a human, a teenage boy into a dragonfly and a loving jellyfish queen into an evil fairy godmother.” Among the other voices in the movie are former CNN personality Larry King and his wife, Shawn, and ex ‘NSYNC member Joey Fatone. Christina Aguilera rocked the house and Jennifer Hudson no-showed , but the big story of the Michael Forever tribute concert was the appearance by his kids. Michael Jackson’s children Prince, 14, Paris, 13 and Blanket, 9, took the stage briefly in Cardiff, Wales, to introduce a live satellite performance by Beyonce. “We’re very happy to be here on this special night to honour our father,” said Paris, dressed in an exact replica of the jacket MJ wore in his “Thriller” video. Prince’s outfit conjures up images of “Bad,” while young Blanket went for one of his dad’s more recent looks, with the long hair and the signature armband: The legendary singer, perhaps the single most successful artist in modern music, died in 2009 aged 50 while rehearsing for a series of comeback concerts. The Michael Forever tribute concert coincides with the involuntary manslaughter trial of the singer’s doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray , currently underway in L.A. Prince, Paris and Blanket have agreed to boycott coverage of the trial, though Prince has also said he will testify if called by the prosecution in the case. Michael’s brothers Jermaine and Randy boycotted the tribute show, calling it ”ill-timed” and ‘inappropriate” given the criminal proceedings taking place. Janet Jackson was less opposed to the show, but declined to perform because it would be “too painful”. Michael Jackson wanted his kids to lead the normal childhood he never had, but they still idolize their famous dad and want to follow in his footsteps. So they told Good Morning America in interview to air tomorrow. The late King of Pop’s mom, Katherine, joins Prince, Paris and Blanket in talking about how they have “adjusted pretty well” to life without Michael. Last fall, we reported that Michael Jackson’s children may be asked to testify on behalf of Dr. Conrad Murray, as the embattled physician’s lawyers seek to establish that the late, great King of Pop had longstanding drug addictions. While that says little about Murray’s actual care, Jackson’s kids apparently thought highly of him in that regard too, because their famous father did. The children refused to believe that their dad died of a heart attack in June 2009, since MJ raved that Dr. Conrad Murray was the best doctor on Earth. For what it’s worth, Michael and the kids loved Murray. Jackson’s former nanny, Grace Rwaramba , has described his addictions in detail, and spoke with LAPD investigators about how Dr. Murray became a “regular” around the house when the singer lived in Vegas, visiting at least twice a week. Grace said Michael would constantly praise Murray in front of the kids, and that’s why after he died, the kids would say , “There’s no way daddy could have died of a heart attack because Dr. Murray is the best doctor in the whole world.” Grace also said Michael first met Murray through a member of MJ’s security team. As she explains it, Jackson felt he could trust Murray in large part because the security guy claimed he had some sort of mysterious leverage over the doctor. Grace offered no further explanation about the mysterious leverage, but like everything else related to Michael Jackson, truth is often stranger than fiction. On an unrelated, but equally peculiar note, Grace says on a family trip to Florida, the kids called 911 when they discovered MJ “passed out” in their hotel. It’s unclear when the incident took place or what caused it.
