In a cross-country phone call — Wayne was at home in Miami while Hilton was taking a break from shooting a reality series in Los Angeles — the pair discussed a variety of topics (Googling themselves, the paparazzi, astrology, etc.,), but really broke the ice when the conversation turned to their respective jail sentences. Wayne did eight months at New York’s Rikers Island after a gun-possession arrest, while Hilton famously served 23 days in 2007 following a parole violation. “For me, it was OK, because it just meant that I was alone in my thoughts,” Wayne said when asked about the portion of his sentence he served in solitary confinement, after being caught with an MP3 player. “There were times when it was pretty tough to be by yourself, and to have no television, no nothing. That was kind of tough.” “I had to do 24 nights in solitary,” Hilton added [during her sentence, she was held in a separate cell as a safety precaution]. “Oh, so you know how it is?” Wayne responded. “Yeah, I know how it is,” Hilton said. The discussion then turned to being released from prison — an experience Wayne said “words cannot explain,” and one Hilton called “the best feeling in the world” — and how that newfound freedom affects the individual. “You’re definitely more in tune to what you’re doing. You’re definitely more humble,” Wayne explained. “I think that most people who come out of that situation just want to make the most of life afterwards. Honestly, it was just one big humbling experience.” And in keeping with that life-affirming sentiment — following some in-depth talk about travel and zodiac signs and Weezy’s pet sharks — both Wayne and Hilton discussed what’s next for them: Hilton said she’d “really love” to finish her long-in-the-works second album, while Wayne … well, he has more tangible goals. “I want to bank a cool $50 million at least,” he said. “At the end of the year, I want to be able to say that I banked $50 million. New take on hit song, dubbed ‘The Country Road Version,’ features slide guitar, mandolin and harmonica. After tweeting to her Little Monsters that she was preparing to release “Born This Way (The Country Road Version),” Mother Monster dropped the tune at midnight PT on Friday (March 25) via her Twitter account … and it did not disappoint. The new rendition of the hit opens with ominous, swirling guitars and then introduces a fuzzed-out slide guitar and harmonica wheeze, with all of the thumping disco beats replaced by restrained brush drumming and a more laid-back vibe. Once it kicks into the first chorus, the song continues to take its time, choogling along on live-sounding, laconic drumming and lots of soulful harmonica. Just before the three-minute mark, Gaga mixes in some new lyrics, drawling, “If I wanna make it country, baby, then it’s OK, cuz I was born, I was born, I was born this way,” over picked mandolin. “From London, Paris, Japan back to USA/ I was born on the road, I was born to be brave,” she adds, as the song breaks into full-on country-rock mode reminiscent of late-period Bon Jovi in the final minute. Meanwhile, the original, non-boot-scooting version of “BTW” notched its sixth week in a row at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts this week, which is what Gaga said prompted her to drop the surprise remake on her fans. Earlier this week, Gaga revealed that she’s almost done recording her Born This Way album , telling fans via Twitter, “In Nebraska, finishing up record today … I’m so proud of the album: I keep dancing+drinking: metal/techno rock journey of a woman on the run.” Plans are now being worked up for the tour in support of Born This Way (due out May 23) and Gaga’s first swing at directing, a collaboration with her creative director, Laurieann Gibson, on the video for the album’s upcoming second single, “Judas.” What do you think of Gaga’s twanged-up version of “Born This Way”? Sympathy for Delicious wasn’t exactly the toast of Sundance 2010, but with a cast that includes Orlando Bloom, Laura Linney, Juliette Lewis, Noah Emmerich, John Carroll Lynch, screenwriter Christopher Thornton, and first-time director Mark Ruffalo, it earns a second look in its new trailer. We can quibble about the use of Rolling Stones lyrics to illustrate the movie’s theme of healing, but at least “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” stays out of the fray.
The worst-kept secret (or most obvious development, however you want to read it) of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival was confirmed today: Terrence Malick’s long-delayed The Tree of Life will debut on the Croisette in May. The film joins Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris as the only selections officially set for this year’s fest, though its status in or out of competition remains unknown. Charged with involuntary manslaughter, Dr. Conrad Murray will likely argue that Michael Jackson killed himself with a lethal dose of Propofol. Even if that were true (and it’s a stretch), it still wouldn’t get Murray off the hook. The treatment he gave MJ was suspect for myriad reasons. To that end, Murray’s lawyers just filed documents pointing fingers at none other than Dr. Arnold Klein – Jackson’s longtime doctor and friend. Murray claims that Klein addicted Jackson to Demerol and other powerful narcotics. It’s part of his plan to establish Michael as a lost cause physically . Murray’s legal team claims Klein fueled MJ’s addiction as recently as 2009 by giving him scores of Demerol injections in the months prior to his death. He may have a point there. In the months before Jackson died, Dr. Arnold Klein gave Jackson 51 Demerol injections. But is it relevant to the case? The docs claim it is for this reason: “Due to Mr. Klein’s actions, Mr. Jackson became physiologically and psychologically dependent on Demerol.” Murray’s team says Dr. Arnold Klein , who is also the rumored biological father of MJ’s kids Paris and Prince, “is a relevant, highly material witness.” Dr. Conrad Murray …
Las Vegas District Attorney, David Schubert, who prosecuted Bruno Mars and Paris Hilton in their cocaine possession cases, has been arrested for… wait for it… cocaine possession. Schubert was busted on Saturday night. Schubert was booked and released from the Clark County Detention Center, according to TMZ . Bruno Mars reached a deal in his cocaine case, and is currently on probation for the charge. It will be wiped from his record if he stays out of trouble. David Charles Schubert, 47, was booked into jail Saturday on a charge of possession of cocaine, according to jail records. The charge was the same on which Hilton and Mars were initially booked following their arrests last summer. The socialite and the musician both later struck plea deals. The Las Vegas district attorney who helped prosecute Paris Hilton and Bruno Mars on separate drug charges in 2010 was arrested and booked into jail on drug charges of his own over the weekend.
