Jamaa Fanaka, Director of the Penitentiary Series, Dies at Age 69

He was a leading member of the L.A. Rebellion movement that brought African-American filmmakers together in solidarity, and, more importantly to our purposes, he made a movie about a man who gets his revenge on a corrupt justice system using his eight-foot dong ( Welcome Home Brother Charles , 1975). Jamaa Fanaka ‘s stock in trade was the grindhouse and the drive-in, but his movies, including Emma Mae (aka Black Sister’s Revenge ) (1976), the aforementioned Welcome Home Brother Charles , and the Penitentiary films ( Penitentiary , 1979, Penitentiary 2 , 1982, and Penitentiary 3 , 1987) all embody a defiant spirit that wouldn’t be out of place at a Black Panther Party meeting and inspired intense excitement and passionate fandom in the inner-city kids who saw his movies ( Snoop Dogg is a particularly vocal Fanaka fan ). Fanaka, who was born in Mississippi and grew up in Los Angeles, had a natural aptitude for movies and wrote, directed and got distribution for his first three feature films while still enrolled in UCLA’s film school. Penitentiary was the highest-grossing independent film of 1980, but Fanaka’s career unfortunately slowed down with his worsening health throughout the ’90s and early 2000s. He passed away this week at the age of 69. Fight the power with the Blaxploitation sensations of Jamaa Fanaka right here at MrSkin.com

Louisiana Primary Results: Rick Santorum in Rout

Rick Santorum posted another convincing win in yesterday’s Louisiana’s GOP primary, but still faces doubts over whether he can broaden his appeal to win the race. The Republican presidential candidate said the race was far from over, recalling the naysayers who said Ronald Reagan was too conservative to win the nomination. But the road ahead is difficult for Santorum, who’s slogging it out a game of numbers to clinch the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the party’s nomination. Santorum will win at least eight of the 20 delegates up for grabs, according to CNN. Going into Louisiana, Mitt Romney had 563 delegates to Santorum’s 251. At this point, it is very unlikely that Santorum, Newt Gingrich or Ron Paul can overtake Romney, with their only chance being to keep him from hitting 1,144. If that were to occur, the nominee could be decided at an open convention when party officials convene this summer, but it remains a long shot at best now. The candidates get a few days of breathing space before the next round of primaries on April 3 when Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia vote. Louisiana Republican primary results: Rick Santorum 91,305 (49%) Mitt Romney 49,749 (27%) Newt Gingrich 29,655 (16%) Ron Paul 11,460 (6%)

deadmau5 Baits Miami Music Fans With Ear-Bending Set

The poolside Mau5trap party kicked off Saturday night with assists from Feed Me, Moguai, Steve Duda and Frederik. By Sam Hendrick deadmau5 performs at Fontainebleau in Miami on Saturday Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News MIAMI — Another day, another party. A slightly sunburned MTV News crew hit the highly anticipated Mau5trap pool party at the Fontainebleau on Saturday night, where we found Mau5heads had come out in full force to support the boss himself, deadmau5 , and his cohorts during a poolside set. Don’t be fooled, however, it’s Miami Music Week and this wasn’t your parents’ pool party: Fontainebleau boasts a pool deck that would make most of your favorite Vegas hotspots look like the neighborhood YMCA. Add a DJ booth inlaid within a colossal LED wall, and you’ve set the scene for the Mau5trap Records party headlined by deadmau5, with support from labelmates Feed Me, Moguai, Steve Duda and Frederik. Frederik and Duda started strong, warming up the crowd for Moguai. The German producer/DJ introduced himself with his remix of Fatboy Slim’s “Ya Mama” and an electro rendition of the Nena classic “99 Red Balloons.” Keeping consistent with the heavy synths of the signature Mau5trap sound, Moguai passed the torch to Feed Me, who continued to bring up the energy of the evening. The U.K. outfit mellowed out dirty riffs of songs like “Green Bottle” with the soothing vocals of Lindsay on “Embers.” In fact, one fan was so moved by Feed Me’s transition that he started a solo splash-fight in the football field-size pool … perhaps in search of deeper enlightenment? After a proper warm-up, it seemed only fitting that deadmau5 would take the stage to end the night with a bang. But from the start, it seemed clear he had another agenda. The man born Joel Zimmerman followed a long intro of experimental drum loops with a Mau5y version of Milo’s “Dr. Pressure” and 2 Live Crew’s “Shake That Ass Bitch,” signaling he wouldn’t be mixing his typical set. Instead, for the next hour, he took the audience on a tour of the inner workings of his creative mind and treated them to a showcase of his Ableton mastery. Those who came to rage with the mau5 may have been left staring at a half-full bottle of Grey Goose, but judging from the vibe of Zimmerman’s set (and recent style postings on his SoundCloud page), the DJ/producer is obviously in a different place than he was in his “Ghost” days (although did play the track for partygoers at the end of the night). Swedish House Mafia’s Fiery Masquerade Motel Welcomes 10,000 Guests

EDM trio kick off explosive two-day fest at Miami Music Week with help from heavy-hitting openers like Thomas Gold and Calvin Harris. By Akshay Bhansali Fans at Ultra Music Festival 2012 Photo: Getty Images MIAMI — On Friday, Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello — the trio also known as Swedish House Mafia — gave fans at Miami Music Week an event to remember. Their two-hour-plus spectacle at Grand Central Park featured stadium-style house music with a backdrop of pyrotechnics and fireworks. Add to that the dazzling graphics bouncing off five enormous LED screens, and it was clear that SHM had accomplished an impressive high mark that won’t be easy match on Saturday night (March 24), when the event kicks off its second day. MTV News caught up with the Swedes just before their set and they talked to us about the long road to their massively successful Masquerade Motel mini-festival. “We’ve done it again,” Angello raved. “For [us], to go out there and enjoy our own party, which is something like this [in scale], it’s amazing to be here.” Last year’s tented, single-day Masquerade party on South Beach “was amazing,” Angello added, “And the year before that was amazing; we’ve come a very long way.” Lined with palm trees, tall office buildings and residential apartments, Grand Central Park had the vibe of being isolated from the rest of Miami, and that made a party filled with 10,000 SHM fans feel intimate. But before the trio even took the stage, a spectacular lineup of opening acts did more than warm up the crowd. Asked about the all-stars preceding them, Seb, Ax and Steve beamed with pride. “We have NO_ID,” Axwell said of the Dutch duo newly signed to his Axtone Records imprint. “We just think that they have a really interesting sound, which is kind of like chunky-groovy-sexy house, so it complements what we are doing very well. Otto Knows is also here. “[Otto is] a young kid from Sweden, one of my really close friends,” Ingrosso chimed in. “He’s like my little brother. We are starting to make music and he just released his first single ever. “Thomas Gold is here,” Axwell added. “Alesso, a guy called Calvin Harris . “Yeah, I don’t know if you know him,” Ingrosso chuckled with a knowing nod to Harris’ accolades on the EDM scene and, most recently, for his work with Rihanna. “Yeah, he’s another guy we found,” Angello joked. “No, Rihanna found him!” Axwell laughed. “He’s always been very interesting and doing creative stuff. By the time the Swedes took their positions behind the decks, it was clear 10,000 screaming fans were ready to take the party to the next level. Just as they’ve done on their last two Stateside Masquerades, they launched into the organ-laden edit of Ax & Sebastian’s “Together”; they followed that with latest hit single, “Greyhound,” marking the song’s drop with a fireworks display. What followed was a clever series of mixes of some of the most popular anthems of the last six months. Among them were Axwell’s edit of Michael Calfan’s “Resurrection” mixed into Fedde Le Grand’s remix of “Paradise,” and “Antidote,” which was given a pyro burst. The crowd went mental when Dirty South and Usual Suspects’ “Walking Alone” was blended perfectly with SHM’s “Miami 2 Ibiza” “That’s right, Miami, it is straight appreciation for ‘Miami 2 Ibiza,’ ” Ax told the crowd. “We realize that are a lot of parties this week and we definitely feel honored that you’ve come to us this week!” SHM also treated fans to set staples, including “Troll” ; Nari & Milani’s “Atom”; Ingrosso, Alesso and Ryan Tedder’s “Calling (Lose My Mind)”; Deniz Koyu’s remix of “Dangerous”; and SHM’s remix of Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” “Are you making new friends?” Axwell asked the partygoers. “Maybe some from the opposite gender? Maybe falling in love? For sure, we are falling love. The Swedish House Mafia loves you guys. Thank you for coming down!” But one of the most unexpected gems of the night came at the very end, when fans got to hear a cook-up Axwell told MTV News in our pre-set chat that he couldn’t wait to play: The SHM/Laidback Luke collabo “Leave the World Behind” (featuring Deborah Cox) was merged with Knife Party’s remix of Porter Robinson’s “Unison.” That mashup was received with a roar from the crowd as the high-energy dance party became another one for the books. NO_ID, Third Party and AN21 join Alesso and Calvin Harris as openers for Swedish House Mafia on the second (and final) day of the Masquerade Motel on Saturday. Ultra Music Festival’s ‘Best Of Bass’ Pre-Party: Smog Vs. Basshead

Miami’s Mekka hosts 12th Planet, Pendulum, Drop the Lime and more. By Akshay Bhansali 12th Planet Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images MIAMI — Nestled in a series of rooms at Mekka downtown, Smog vs. Basshead, a party conceived by bass-music champions from L.A. and Miami, on Thursday night again realized a frenzied hands-in-the-air steamfest. For the third year in a row, hundreds of partygoers screamed their lungs out, pumping their arms to the warbles and drum and bass. For all the talk of dubstep and drum and bass being mostly underground, judging by the event’s attendance, the genre is booming — and pioneers like 12th Planet (born John Dadzie), a 13-year California bass veteran and Smog label head, couldn’t be prouder. “It started off as a party at the White Room, and Basshead is a label based out of Miami,” 12th explained to MTV News after his set. “The label actually put out my first dubstep release, so we were kind of always routed together, and we just decided to join forces because, being from California, it’s hard to break into other markets. “We got the opportunity to work in Miami, and the first show was a hit. And the second show, last year, was the biggest Smog vs. Basshead. And then this year, just as many people. So, I’m totally excited — totally stoked.” The world SVB creates bears a comparison to the large-scale EDM event taking place a few blocks away. While the bass get-together might not reach the scale of the Ultra Music Festival , a variety of artists gathered for a series of fiery performances, taking fans into day-break. “It’s just five room of bass — straight up!” 12th proclaimed. SVB featured 16bit, Noah D, Flinch, Jaun Basshead and more. U.K. bass aggregator, feeder and video-sharing community UKF boasted a Pendulum DJ set, Zeds Dead and Kaon Sound. The Trouble & Bass room had Drop the Lime, AC Slater and Toddla T. The Metalheadz room was headlined by Goldie & Bailey. “All these guys making great, great music. We even had Foreign Beggars come down,” 12th said about his former tourmates, an electronic hip-hop collective that recently caught the eye of deadmau5. “They’ve never even played in Florida. I think that is the appeal of this party: You are going to hear the best of bass music.” Miami Music Week is going down, and MTV News is on the ground! Lana Del Rey Announces L.A. And NYC Residencies

Controversial singer to play three shows apiece at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre and New York’s Irving Plaza in June. By Kara Warner Lana Del Rey Photo: Michael Kovac/ WireImage Now that we’ve had some time to watch Lana Del Rey ‘s “Blue Jeans” video from the comfort of our computers, it’s time to prepare to see the songbird live in concert. Del Rey announced Tuesday (March 20) that over the first 10 days in June, she will be playing a series of concerts in New York and L.A. Tickets for the three New York shows go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. ET, and tickets for the trio of L.A. concerts go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. PT. Del Rey will play the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles June 3-5 and will set up shop in New York from June 7-9 at Irving Plaza. The “Video Games” singer’s recent rise to fame has been fraught with soap-opera-esque plotlines. First there was the hype about her Born to Die album, then there was an equally hyped performance on “Saturday Night Live,” the fallout from which resulted in a particularly negative wave of publicity from her very vocal detractors . That led to a cooling-off period that included rumors that Del Rey’s management had to postpone a scheduled tour . Now it seems as though the singer is back on track with promoting her old-school, sultry sound, as demonstrated in the retro theme of the just-released black-and-white clip for “Blue Jeans.” Del Rey’s residency announcement reflects the very specific touring plans she teased to MTV News back in February. “I’m capping every venue at 900 [capacity], because I don’t want to perform for more [people] than that,” she said. “So what I want to do is three nights in New York, like at Irving Plaza, and then three nights at the El Rey in L.A. and then, in between, do 15 cities, and cap it at 900 venues. And everybody is onboard, so that’s what we’re going to do.” Will you check out Lana’s L.A. or New York shows? Let us know in the comments! Madonna Owns ‘Girl Gone Wild’ Title In New Video

Queen of Pop pays homage to her Erotica days with saucy black-and-white clip for second MDNA single. By Jocelyn Vena Madonna in her “Girl Gone Wild” video Photo: Warner Bros While Madonna favored vintage, kitschy, colorful images for her “Give Me All Your Luvin” video , the Queen of Pop opted for black-and-white sex for her just-released “Girl Gone Wild” clip . Shot by fashion photographers Mert and Marcus (who also did the album’s more multihued artwork), the video was the perfect homage to the singer’s foxy “Sex” book and Erotica days of the ’90s. Crunchy, sexy and edgy, the “GGW” clip is certainly the perfect response for anyone yearning for that Madge of yesteryear. Twenty years after Madonna had conservative-minded folks worried about her sexy influence over pop culture, the singer can still make us want her and whatever brand of sex she’s selling. Pleather, whips, chains and same-sex action define the images in the saucy clip. While “Give Me” featured pals Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., the only “Girl” in this video is Madge, who gets raunchy with a number of male dancers. The video opens with Madonna in full glamour mode (big hair and diva makeup) declaring how she wants to be good but just can’t fight the bad. We mean, who could blame her with all that eye candy around? Spastic shots of her doing yoga are intercut with ones of her dancing around and sexy male dancers posing with one another (and sharing an apple in a way we haven’t seen before). The video also features an electrifying dance sequence, with men in tights and heels, really calling attention to Madonna’s never-ending need to create memorable images. It’s clear this girl wants to have fun and she wants to be licked, kissed and grinded on by hot dudes. This is Madonna, so fans shouldn’t be surprised that she’s favoring erotic scenes in which she mugs for the camera with beefy guys all over her. Eventually, Madge proves she’s still got the moves when she joins the dancers for another choreographed sequence. As the video continues to show the singer and her dancers just being attractive with one another, the final shot is a close-up of Madonna, crying thick, black tears, proving that wild girls are saddest when the party is over. Mert and Marcus are best known for their work as fashion photographers, and that influence is certainly felt in this video. It plays out as if it’s a series of shots in a fashion magazine. MDNA, the singer’s 12th studio album, is set for release on Monday. “GGW” is the second single from it. What did you think of Madonna’s new video? Let us know in the comments!
