Jacob Lusk Says ‘American Idol’ Criticism From Jimmy Iovine ‘Hurts’

Lusk hopes to audition for Broadway and films, as well as make an album. By Gil Kaufman Jacob Lusk Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Jacob Lusk was pretty sure his “American Idol” journey was going to end Thursday night, and he was OK with that. But what kind of stung were the harsh comments made by mentor Jimmy Iovine in a taped package that ran before Jacob got his news, in which the Interscope Geffen A&M boss said Lusk appeared to lose his confidence and said the singer’s voice “closed down.” “I wouldn’t call it soul-destroying. It definitely hurts a lot to have someone who is supposed to be mentoring you and it feels like every time you turn around, [he’s] tearing you down,” Lusk said of Iovine’s cutting comments. “But what you have to remember is that you’re not doing it for him, you’re doing it for the people out there in America. They’re the people who are voting. It definitely hurts, it’s definitely hard to have someone beat you over the head with a baseball bat and then say, ‘OK, now go ahead and sing for your life.’ ” If there is any reason he was sent home, he said, it was because he wasn’t in his gospel/R&B element on Wednesday night and simply didn’t have a great performance. After his elimination, though, Lusk went out on a high note, giving one of his loosest, most engaging performances of the season with “A House Is Not a Home.” But in a call with reporters Friday (May 6), he talked about his performance after that performance, where he really took the audience to church and let loose. “I made a joke months ago [to ‘Idol’ bandleader Ray Chew]. I said, ‘Ray, if I ever got off this show, if I ever win, whatever happens, we’re going to church.’ ” But when he finished singing, he didn’t want to end on a sad, tearful note (though he did cry a bit), so he did what he always does: He rejoiced and celebrated making it to the #5 position surrounded by his family, producer Nigel Lythgoe and “Idol” stage manager Debbie Williams. When asked about Iovine saying the pressure seemed to be getting to him, Lusk disagreed with the assessment. “I wouldn’t say that the pressure was getting to me. I was getting a little tired and I was just really trying to do different things that I thought that he would like and that America just wanted to see different things,” he explained. “But at the end of the day, I definitely went out and I said, ‘I’m going to give them my all,’ and that’s what I did.” One of the signature moments Lusk was asked to clarify was when he seemed to call out the voting public before singing Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” It appeared at the time that he was making some sort of political or personal statement with this warning: “If I end up in the bottom three, it won’t be because I sang the song bad. It won’t be because I sang the song wrong. It’ll be because everybody in America wasn’t ready to look at themselves in the mirror.” Lusk said Friday that he didn’t mean anything personal by it at all and lamented that it was all a big misunderstanding. “It had nothing to do with me and my vocal performance. I’m not the greatest singer in the world; at least I don’t feel that I am,” he said, explaining that he was referring to his song selection, which he’d changed from the more sensual Marvin Gaye tune “Let’s Get It On,” and how it was inspired by the recent Japanese earthquake. “For me, it was about us all taking an internal glance. … It had nothing to do with my vocal performance. It had nothing to do with people voting for me. It wasn’t about that. It was about me wanting people to look at ourselves and look at what we can do to change the world. … I was starting with me that night and saying that I was going to make a change to help change the world.” Now that the pressure is off and he can start thinking about the rest of his career, Lusk said he’s looking forward to auditioning for Broadway shows and films and working on a debut album that will eschew the bubblegum-pop sensibility of the day and get back to some classic soulful R&B like that of his inspirations, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston and Patti LaBelle. “I’ve heard some things through the grapevine, and I think I’m gonna be fine,” Lusk said when asked if, like another recently eliminated singer, Stefano Langone , he’s gotten calls from major artists eager to work with him. “There’s a world out there who is desirous of what I have to offer, and it’s just about me really going out there and giving my heart and soul. Someone out there is gonna want it, and I’m excited just to give that.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Casey Abrams Had To ‘Translate’ Online Haters During ‘American Idol’

‘You take away the swear words … and you read what they’re actually trying to say,’ he tells MTV News of nasty comments. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Casey Abrams Photo: MTV News You might be surprised to learn that, when he wasn’t slapping the bass or battling colitis , recently departed “American Idol” hopeful Casey Abrams enjoyed nothing more than kicking back, stroking his beard, and diving headfirst into the sea of comments fans of the show had written about him. And, unlike pretty much everyone else in “Idol” history, he preferred them to be as nasty as possible. “What you have to do is kinda, you have to translate it. If they’re saying negative things about you, you take away the swear words and like ‘I hate you’ and you read what they’re actually trying to say,” he told MTV News. “And, if [they wrote] ‘Casey sucked this performance, he sounded like a dog,’ I take it as ‘Casey, stop growling so much.’ And if I see more than, like, 10 comments like that, I’m going to take it as a sign, and I’m going to try to ease up on the growling.” So Abrams used fan comments much in the same way he did the input of the “Idol” judges: He weighed their value against his instincts and acted accordingly (he certainly didn’t stop growling). Like he told us previously, it’s all “jelly beans in a jar.” And though he read plenty of nasty things about himself, he let them all roll off his back — except for one thing. Seems you can call Abrams whatever you want, just don’t equate his performances to jazz. “The jazz thing [bothered me],” he said. “I didn’t see a lot of negative comments, but I saw that, like, it fell flat, and I’m OK with that. When I first listened to jazz, I didn’t like it at all, I hated it, and then I had to play it to really get what it meant, so every single negative comment, I get where they’re coming from, so it’s all good.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! James Durbin Weeps, Scotty McCreery Wows On ‘American Idol’

Plus, Haley Reinhart redeems herself with bluesy ‘House of the Rising Sun’ on Then and Now-themed night. By Gil Kaufman James Durbin performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX The theme for Wednesday night’s (May 4) top-five “American Idol” performance show was Then and Now, and the remaining contestants went out of their way to let viewers know exactly what musical pocket they’ve settled into with their song choices. Helping to guide them along was Grammy-winning superstar Sheryl Crow. And while some, like front-runners Scotty McCreery and James Durbin, hit a pair of home runs — including a Durbin performance that was one of the most emotional in “Idol” history — frequent bottom-three dweller Haley Reinhart stumbled in the judges’ eyes with an unreleased Lady Gaga song, only to storm back into their hearts with a show-closing, vocal-fireworks display. After a detour into sensitive singer/songwriter land last week, rocker Durbin was back in his bombastic lane with 30 Second to Mars’ “Closer to the Edge.” Crow did a duet with Durbin to get him in the groove and lead mentor Jimmy Iovine dubbed it the perfect song choice. James started out a bit shaky, his vocals flat and a tad tinny, but after pumping up the room and rising up into his head voice, he walked out into the crowd and doled out the high-fives, working the stage like an arena-rock veteran. With pyro shooting off behind him, he made a clear attempt to reach the folks all the way in the back of the room. “I think you kicked that song’s ass,” said Steven Tyler, deeming JD ready to rock stadiums. Jennifer Lopez agreed, saying “it’s yours to take,” and Randy Jackson liked how it made Durbin feel contemporary and took him out of his 1980s hard rock zone. Jacob Lusk was feeling confident about his chances of winning and proved it by taking on Jordin Sparks’ “No Air.” Crow deemed the tune difficult, but felt good about Lusk’s chances of nailing it, even though he was attempting to sing both the Sparks and Chris Brown parts. Lusk was in fine voice, using his breathy falsetto to its full power and adding a funky body wave to his repertoire, but the solo duet was a bit awkward. J.Lo’s always liked his showmanship and called his voice one of the best ever on the show, but said she wondered what his career might look like. If the Sparks song was it, she counseled him to stick with that sound. “I don’t think that’s the direction for you,” countered Randy, saying it was mostly sharp and was a mistake to sing both parts. “I don’t see you as Chris Brown or Jordin Sparks,” he added, saying Lusk should focus on being a more Luther Vandross-style crooner. Teen Lauren Alaina chose Carrie Underwood’s “Flat on the Floor,” and Crow suggested she stand still and just belt it! Wearing a sassy outfit with silver tassels hanging around her waist, Alaina took their advice and shimmied in place while putting all her sass and country swagger into the fiddle-rocking tune for one of her strongest performances to date. “That is the direction for you!” Jackson said, psyched about the fun, energetic side Lauren showed. Tyler agreed and Lopez said, simply, “You ate that up!” It was back in the down-home groove for McCreery with Montgomery-Gentry’s gritty rocker “Gone.” The first few lines were delivered in his signature baritone — with a bit of stilted over-enunciation — but once he broke into the chorus, Scotty looked and sounded like a future Grand Ole Opry veteran as he owned the song and put some kicky emotion into it. “Up to now you’ve been like a puritan, but I swear to God I saw you dance with the devil tonight, and that’s a good thing … that showed a whole other side of you,” offered Tyler to Jackson’s utter confusion. Lopez said Scotty just owned the stage and whooped about his growling, by which she meant the good kind, not the Casey Abrams kind. Talk about a coup. Iovine gave Haley Reinhart the as-yet-unreleased Born This Way Lady Gaga tune “You & I,” and with Gaga’s blessing, she played it as a jazzy torch song. With a seductive purr and her trademark guttural growl, Reinhart bumped and grinded her way across the stage and sang the tune like a show-stopping, hands-in-the-air bluesy encore at a 5,000-seat theater. Though she loved some moments in the song, Lopez wasn’t sure about the choice of the unreleased tune and felt it didn’t showcase Reinhart’s gifts. Jackson agreed that picking a song no one knows was risky, but Tyler said it did spotlight her strengths. “I think you’re just one perfect song away from being an ‘American Idol,’ ” the Aerosmith singer offered. Durbin couldn’t stop crying listening to the sensitive piano ballad “Without You” by late Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson. Choked up thinking about his son and fianc

Casey Abrams Feels ‘Really Good’ About His ‘American Idol’ Exit

Latest castoff denies dating ‘very special musical friend’ Haley Reinhart. By Gil Kaufman Casey Abrams Photo: FOX When Casey Abrams ended up standing next to Jacob Lusk and Scotty McCreery on “American Idol” on Thursday night, he had a feeling the end was nigh . Then, when Lusk was sent to safety, well, that was all she wrote. “Everyone was just so incredible [on Wednesday night]. … My performance was pretty good, but seeing Jacob kill it and then seeing Haley kill it, seeing Scotty and Lauren kill it and Durbin obviously … it just made me feel like, ‘These guys are incredible. These guys could carry the show. I don’t really need to be here, so if I go home tomorrow, I’m prepared,’ ” he said of the thoughts going through his head after Wednesday night’s Carole King performance show .

Coon of the Day: GOP Rep. Allen West Calls Obama a ‘Low-Level Socialist’ Who ‘Never Even Ran a Lemonade Stand’

Florida Republican Representative, Allen West, took to Fox News yesterday and completely disrespected President Obama in an interview with the conservative news channel’s Greta Van Susteren yesterday. We all know that Fox is no fan of the first Black Family in any capacity and Brotha West went on record to express just how he feels. Not only did he fail to acknowledge him as President, he made a point to stress his middle name, “Hussein,” whenever he referred to him. As if that’s not disrespectful enough, he called him a ‘low level socialist agitator’ who ‘never even ran a lemonade stand.’ While it’s no surprise that the Fox correspondent completely agreed with West’s enflamed statements, this beesh starts bringing up old sh*t ‘out of curiosity!’ She questioned whether West believed that Obama was unaware of his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright’s, ‘appalling’ references to white people. And just like the coon he is for the day, he insinuated that President Obama wasn’t being honest about how he really feels. SMH Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) stood by eyebrow-raising remarks he recently made about President Barack Obama during an interview with Fox News host Greta Van Susteren on Thursday night. Speaking recently on “The Laura Ingraham Show,” West asserted that the president demonstrated “third world dictator-like arrogance” in delivering a speech on the federal budget and government spending. “I do stand by those words,” said the conservative congressman, who was elected into office last November with support from the Tea Party movement. “The truth needs to be said.” “I am sick and tired of this class warfare, this Marxist, demagogic rhetoric that is coming from the President of the United States of America,” West explained. “It is not helpful for this country and it’s not going to move the ball forward as far as rectifying the economic situation in our country. And I’m not going to back away from telling what the truth is.” The freshman lawmaker took issue with the way in which the president has regarded Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who recently introduced a controversial budget proposal for the next fiscal year. “I think that when you look at what a community organizer is turning out to be, it does seem to be like a low-level socialist agitator,” he said. Last weekend, West and Donald Trump were the keynote speakers at a Tea Party rally in Florida. The congressman told Newsmax at the time that he hopes the billionaire is serious about considering running for president in the next election cycle. “This is not a time for any jokes, games or gimmicks, and I hope he is very serious,” said West, who also declined to rule out running on a ticket with Trump in 2012. Allen, Trump, Fox News and the rest of the people who are completely displeased with Obama’s performance, that’s fine – they are entitled to their opinion – but they all deserve an emphatic HO. SIT. Stefano Langone ‘Ready To Pounce’ On Post-‘American Idol’ Career

‘There is a market for what I do and what I can do,’ latest castoff says. By Gil Kaufman Stefano Langone Photo: FOX You have not seen the last of “American Idol” finalist Stefano Langone . Actually, based on what the seventh-place finisher said Friday (April 22) in a call with reporters, you may not have even seen the first of him. In between moments of comparing himself to icons such as Stevie Wonder, John Legend and Justin Timberlake, self-proclaimed “lucky number seven” contestant Langone explained that he purposely held back on “Idol” because he wanted to save some of his patented special “swag” for his fans to hear on his debut album. “It’s hard to really show your chops on the show,” he said. “One thing I wanted to save and keep close to myself was my original music and my piano playing. That’s something that I want to bring out and really show the world, and I think it will be very, very special.” Saying that he purposely chose to not showcase his full range of talent on the program, Langone said he has big plans to carve a unique lane in the vein of Justin Timberlake and John Legend by playing piano, writing his own material and collaborating with rappers. “Right now, there is a market for what I do and what I can do,” Langone said when asked how he was going to become the rare #7 finisher who does not fade into obscurity after leaving the show. “The producers know it, my management knows it, and I know it. … I’m ready to pounce on it. I’m ready to attack.” Curiously, Langone said not only did he choose to keep his piano talents under wraps, but he also picked songs that weren’t necessarily the best ones for the show, but ones that he thought might help him in his post-“Idol” career. “When I get on that piano, I don’t want to be remembered as getting on the piano and having 20 million-plus people see me on a piano doing a cover,” he said. “I want people to see me sitting on a piano and singing my songs, my heartfelt, real songs that came from my soul.” Asked whom he might compare himself to or want to work with, Langone ticked off the kind of list that is probably on every wannabe star’s bedroom wall at the moment: Bruno Mars, Legend, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Usher and Ne-Yo. Though he wouldn’t reveal who has been in touch, Langone promised that he’s already heard from a number of rappers who are ready to get in the studio with him. Stefano also admitted that he was conflicted by lasting longer than his pal Pia Toscano , a singer many thought would finish higher than him. “When I came out for [the show], I was never wanting to be the American Idol; it was getting that foot in the door in the music industry and taking a step forward in that way,” explained Langone, who hit the bottom three times before his luck ran out Thursday night. “I knew how bad Pia wanted to be the American Idol, and I almost wanted it more for her more than me.” Stefano said he was not rattled by landing in the bottom three so many times, instead focusing on what he was going to do the following week and working hard to improve. “It doesn’t really reflect on who I am as a musician or a performer at all,” he said. “Now it’s time for me to really move forward and become that footprint that I know I can put on this industry.” When good pal and Hollywood roommate James Durbin jumped on him at the end of Thursday’s show after shedding many tears for his eliminated friend, Langone just chalked it up to Durbin being a “cry baby” and said it was all good. He counseled James not to worry about him and revealed that he will be the best man at the rocker’s upcoming wedding. So we now know he held back on his talents, but given his apparent sex appeal, was Langone mad that it didn’t dawn on him to plant a kiss on Jennifer Lopez’s cheek first? “Not at all. That’s cool for Casey,” he said of bearded fellow sex symbol Casey Abrams, who made headlines with his judge’s smooch on Wednesday night. “It’s probably the first kiss he’s had in a long time, so I ain’t mad at him.” As for when he expects to snag his first Grammy? “A year,” he said without missing a beat, then rethinking it a second later. “Two years.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty!
