Pop heartthrob tweets about getting the go-ahead to perform in New York Tuesday night. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage Justin Bieber may have canceled his show Sunday (August 29) night after being struck down by an illness , but he’s bounced back and is ready to headline a show in New York. The VMA-nominated teen star tweeted that he has been cleared by his doctors to perform on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, where he will film part of his upcoming 3-D movie. “Ok the doctor said we aren’t 100 percent but we are ready to ROcK!! Been cleared. MSG let’s do this!!!” he tweeted on Monday. “Let’s fill the streets of NYC! Rehearsals tonight were incredible…got off to a rocky start because wasnt feeling right but then after lunch kicked in. 2morrow at MSG!! Thanks to everyone who came to help today…this movie is coming together.” Fans in attendance on Tuesday will get the chance to be a part of his 3-D movie, which made Bieber seem genuinely excited. “2morrow let’s fill the streets of NYC with Purple and even if you dont have tix we will b celebratin n maybe u might just find ur way inside,” he wrote. “Tomorrow is a celebration….we are living a dream and playing MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in NYC!! WHO IS COMING!!?!?!? SEE U THERE!!!!!” Rumors have been circulating for weeks that other celebrities will make cameos at the show, and among the big names in the rumor mill is “Never Say Never” guest Jaden Smith. “Special security arrangements are being made for Jaden, who will appear onstage, and his family, including [his father] Will, to be in the audience for the concert,” a source told the New York Post . Earlier this month, the film’s director, Jon Chu, spoke to MTV News about the flick. “[It’s] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don’t know him, and we’re gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from,” he explained. “Because it’s a really fascinating story and it has a lot to do with our sort of digital lifestyle now. He was able to do what corporations try to do now when they use YouTube and they don’t even know what to do with it yet. It’s a pretty cool story for our time.” Related Photos Justin Bieber’s ‘My World’ Tour Hits Los Angeles Related Artists Justin Bieber

Ke$ha Breaks Through To The Big Time: A VMA Cheat Sheet!

‘Tik Tok’ singer/nominee racked up massive digital downloads, opened for Rihanna and survived ‘SNL’ on road to Video Music Awards. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images She is, without question, one of the biggest breakout stars of 2010. A slurring, whirling, hard-partying pop oddity (who may also be a genius) with a #1 album and a boatload of hit singles to her name, not to mention more than a few enemies . She even has under her star-spangled belt, her very own, very public WTF debacle in the form of a rather, uh, divisive “Saturday Night Live” performance .

Bristol Palin, Mark Ballas Paired For ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Palin will compete alongside Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino and ‘The Hills’ star Audrina Patridge this season. By Jocelyn Vena Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas on “Good Morning America” Tuesday Photo: ABC After lots of rumors and speculation , “Dancing With The Stars” fans learned Monday (August 30) that the likes of “Hills” star Audrina Patridge, “Jersey Shore” star The Situation and David Hasselhoff would compete on the next season of ABC’s hit . On Tuesday, Bristol Palin appeared on “Good Morning America” to talk about competing for the show’s coveted mirror-ball trophy. Palin, who will dance with two-time champ Mark Ballas, said that she agreed to do the show because she was looking to try something new. “I was excited to jump on board and be a part of something that was positive and fun, leave the drama behind and get out of there for a while and be in California,” she said. She did let her parents — one of whom is 2008 Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin — know about her new venture before it was announced. “I gave [my parents] a little bit of a heads-up, like, ‘Hey, Mom! I signed a contract with ‘Dancing with The Stars.’ ” Palin is looking forward to showing off a new side of herself. “I want people to see this side of me and my work ethic and see my personality,” she explained. “We’re starting from scratch. I’m really looking forward to getting outside of that box and doing something new. I am trying to coordinate myself and get some rhythm and stuff … it’s gonna be an awesome experience. Hard work is definitely going to have to be put into it. I want to have fun and, like I said, step outside my comfort zone.” Ballas had no doubt that he would eventually “pull out her dancing demon and get her going,” and he added that the two are still introducing themselves to one another. “I think you have to get to know each other as quickly as you can and learn about your partner cause everyone is different and everyone has different learning curves,” he said. “You have a few weeks to train … the main thing is to focus on yourself and make sure you’re happy with what you’re doing.” More couples will be announced on Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” The new season of “Dancing With The Stars” kicks off September 20. Lindsay Lohan Tells Vanity Fair: “I Want My Career Back”

Troubled actress says she’s learned from her mistakes. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan on the cover of the October issue of Vanity Fair Photo: Condé Nast In the first major interview published since Lindsay Lohan spent time in jail and rehab, the troubled actress told Vanity Fair that she’s determined to get her career back on track. She also addressed suggestions that she was on a downward spiral of drug and alcohol addiction and talked about how heartrending it was to see her younger sister Ali in the courtroom during her sentencing earlier this summer. “I don’t care what anyone says. I know that I’m a damn good actress. … And I know that in my past I was young and irresponsible — but that’s what growing up is. You learn from your mistakes,” said Lohan, who can be seen in “Machete” and who is slated to start working on the Linda Lovelace biography “Inferno” in November. Lohan also spoke candidly about her alleged struggles with illicit substances and alcohol in the interview, which was conducted one week before she spent 13 days of a 90-day sentence in jail. “If I were the alcoholic everyone says I am, then putting a [SCRAM] bracelet on would have ended me up in detox, in the emergency room, because I would have had to come down from all the things that people say I’m taking and my father says I’m taking–so that says something, because I was fine,” Lohan told the magazine about the alcohol-detection bracelet she was required to wear. Her SCRAM bracelet was triggered on the night of the MTV Movie Awards in June; her lawyer said the cause was an accident in which someone spilled a drink on Lohan’s ankle . But that incident helped set off the chain of events that landed Lohan in jail for 13 days of a 90-day sentence on a probation violation from her 2007 DUI conviction. “I think everyone has their own addictions and hopefully learns how to get past them,” Lohan explained. “I think my biggest focus for myself is learning how to continue to get through the trauma that my father has caused in my life.” Lohan is estranged from father Michael Lohan, but she said watching the reactions from him and her sister Ali when the actress was sentenced to three months in jail was incredibly difficult. The article describes Lohan, 24, as “visibly upset” when talking about watching her sister cry in the courtroom, but it notes that she was torn by Michael Lohan’s presence at the hearing. “The worst part of it is you turn around and you see your dad crying and normally you’d be, like, happy that your father’s there,” she said. “But then he has to go and do an interview right after.” Though Lohan was reportedly taking a number of prescription medications before reporting to jail, the “Mean Girls” star adamantly denied ever abusing prescription drugs . “I never have — never in my life. I have no desire to,” she said. “That’s not who I am. I’ve admitted to the things that I’ve done–to, you know, dabbling in certain things and trying things ’cause I was young and curious and thought it was like, OK, ’cause other people were doing it and other people put it in front of me. And I see what happened in my life because of it.” In addition to serving a short sentence in jail, Lohan was sprung from a 90-day rehab sentence early . Like a lot of young stars who come to Hollywood, Lohan said she got caught up in the party scene and ended up running with the wrong crowd. She blamed that group for some of her troubles, saying they pretended to care about her for the wrong reasons and were only there for the party. When she first moved to Los Angeles as a teenager, Lohan said the atmosphere was,” very go-go-go and I had a lot of responsibility; and I think just the second I didn’t have [structure] anymore — I was 18, 19 — with a ton of money and no one really here to tell me that I couldn’t do certain things … And I see where that’s gotten me now, and I don’t like it.” And while she denied tipping off the paparazzi to her whereabouts to get more press, Lohan confessed that she often relied on tabloids as her main news source and that she was influenced by the blanket coverage of other bad girls like Britney Spears. “I would look up to those girls,” she said. “And I would be like, ‘I want to be like that.’ ” The interview with Lohan runs in the October issue of Vanity Fair , which hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on Thursday (September 2) and nationwide on September 7. Overwhelmingly White Media Criticize Conservative Rallies as ‘Overwhelmingly White’

If you thought media coverage of the Aug. 28 “Restoring Honor” rally hosted in Washington D.C. by Fox News host Glenn Beck seemed like just another attack on conservatives, you’re not alone. As noted by the Daily Caller’s Jim Treacher , much of the coverage had a common thread: describing the crowd as “overwhelmingly white.” While the term was certainly used in coverage of Beck’s rally, it’s not a new label. “Overwhelmingly white” is a prime example of the media’s groupthink on Beck, Tea Parties, and the conservative movement in general. Virtually every major “mainstream” media outlet has used the phrase in just the past year to describe conservative events. But even as the media criticize Tea Party and other conservative rallies for an apparent lack of diversity, they struggle to bring minority voices into their own operations. All three broadcast networks have described the Tea Parties as “overwhelmingly white.” So have CNN, MSNBC, NPR, the Agence France Presse, The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, National Journal and US News & World Report. Many of those organizations are the very ones the news industry discusses as having failed to make diversity goals for staff.   Here are a few examples.  “The crowds turning out for the Tea Party Express rallies are overwhelmingly white.” – Ed Lavandera, CNN “American Morning” March 31, 2010. “The crowd is still overwhelmingly white.” – Jessica Yellin, CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” April 15, 2010. “The crowd that greeted Palin did nothing to contradict the common description of Tea Party supporters as overwhelmingly white and mostly older.” – Ina Jaffe, NPR “Weekend Edition Sunday” March 28, 2010. “They are overwhelmingly white and Anglo …” – USA Today July 2, 2010. That doesn’t take into account other ways to say the same thing. In coverage of Beck’s rally, some outlets opted for the less aggressive “predominantly white” label, while others described the crowd as “nearly all-white.” As Brad Wilmouth reported on NewsBusters , ABC’s Tahman Bradley called the crowd “almost all white,” and suggested that presence of Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, as a speaker was “an obvious effort to try to show inclusion.” The charge leveled at conservative demonstrators is especially ironic given the accusers. The media are notoriously “overwhelmingly white.” The American Society of Newspaper Editors reported in April 2010 that minorities total only 13.26 percent of newsroom staff, a decline from the previous year. The report found 465 newspapers have no minorities on their full-time staffs, a number that “has been growing since 2006.” The organization launched a program in 1978 that “challenged the newspaper industry to achieve racial parity by 2000 or sooner.” It failed. That goal has since been moved to 2025 because, “Over three decades, the annual survey has shown that while there has been progress, the racial diversity of newsrooms does not come close to the fast-growing diversity in the U.S. population as a whole.” Washington Post ombudsman Andrew Alexander in March reported on internal criticism of the newspaper’s diversity. “All told, journalists of color comprise about 24 percent of the newsroom, comfortably above the ASNE census average of roughly 13 percent in recent years.” However, he added, “Minorities are 43 percent of The Post’s circulation area, and a large part of the region is edging toward ‘majority minority’ status.” So how has the diversity-challenge Post handled the Tea Party? “But, [Tea Party rally attendee Jeff Link] says, looking at the crowd, which is overwhelmingly white and middle-aged, ‘it saddens me not to see this gathering more diverse.'” – Feb. 6, 2010. “The new poll offers a portrait of tea party supporters as overwhelmingly white, mostly conservative and generally disapproving of Obama.” – Feb. 11, 2010 “They are overwhelming white (94 percent) and conservative (73 percent).”- April 2, 2010 “Tea Party activists, like Perot voters, are overwhelmingly white.” – April 18, 2010 The New York Times reported in January that minority journalists appear to be suffering the most from newsroom cutbacks. But the report on journalism’s diversity issues wasn’t nearly as smug as a Feb. 16 report about Tea Parties: “Gazing out at his overwhelmingly white audience, Mr. Mack felt the need to say, ‘This meeting is not racist.'” Newspapers aren’t alone. The third annual Television Newsroom Management Diversity Census found that “persons of color” only make up 12.6 percent of staff in TV newsrooms. A 2007 survey by the Radio Television Digital News Association found that minorities make up 21.5 percent of the television news workforce – higher than print but still short of the 34.5 percent of the population. Only 10.2 percent of broadcast news directors are minorities. But that didn’t stop broadcast outlets from pointing the finger at conservatives.  “Do you have any concerns when you look out at the crowds and they’re mostly, well, overwhelmingly white people?” – Terry Moran, ABC “Nightline” Nov. 2, 2009. “You know, one thing to keep in mind about the Tea Party is that it is an overwhelmingly white movement.” – Ron Brownstein, NBC “Meet the Press” April 18, 2010. The long-running discussion over how to include more minorities in the news media, from introspective articles to industry-insider analysis and advice , seems to have produced less-than-impressive results. Maybe members of the media should recall the old adage about glass houses. Like this article? Sign up for “Culture Links,” CMI’s weekly e-mail newsletter, by clicking here.

Billionaire Who Denies Connection to Tea Parties Bankrolls Tea-Partying Glenn Beck Fans

David Koch, billionaire backer of the Tea Party movement, says he's never been to a Tea Party event. So, what do you call the conference full of Tea Partiers he just convened? August 29, 2010|WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a darkened hotel ballroom, on the eve of Glenn Beck's burlesque of self-righteousness at the Lincoln Memorial, some 2,500 activists listened politely to the tall, impeccably dressed elder at the podium as he stumbled through his introduction of the evening's guest of honor, the conservative columnist George Will. The speaker was introduced simply as chairman of the board of the Americans For Prosperity Foundation, the organization that sponsored the event. Few among the rank-and-file recognized the billionaire David Koch — heir to the fortunes of Koch Industries — or knew him as the man who bankrolls their activism, whose largess subsidized many of their trips to the nation's capital to take part in AFPF's organizing conference, and the Beck rally the following day. Beck, you'll recall, is in the employ of the billionaire Rupert Murdoch, whose News Corporation (the parent company of Fox News and the Wall Street Journal) has been in cahoots, as AlterNet reported( http://www.alternet.org/news/142068/utilizing_public_airwaves,_media_mogul_murdo… ), with Kochs' AFPF since the inception of the Tea Party movement. Koch's halting public speaking style befits his usual reluctance in recent years to interact with the public. He prefers to be known as the philanthropic presence behind the great institutions of New York: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History and the New York City Ballet. Indeed, he made his entrance to the stage at the AFPF banquet to the strains of “New York, New York,” which seemed a bit out of place in a room filled with the sounds of Southern drawls and Midwestern twangs. But over the course of the past year, Koch has earned a new reputation, one he's not keen to have: the Daddy Warbucks of the Tea Party movement. As AlterNet first reported last year, the two main astroturf groups responsible for organizing Tea Party supporters into a national movement were both founded by Koch: Americans For Prosperity, presided over by Tim Phillips, the former business partner of Ralph Reed; and FreedomWorks, which is chaired by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey. Both FreedomWorks and Americans For Prosperity have their roots in a now-defunct Koch-funded group, Citizens for a Sound Economy. While Koch is actively involved in Americans For Prosperity, his spokesperson claims no current relationship with FreedomWorks, or, incredibly, with the Tea Party movement. Last spring, on the eve of the April 15 Tax Day Tea Party protests, Koch Industries spokesperson Melissa Cohlmia sent an unsolicited statement( http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/04/right-wing_backers_koch_indust… ) to reporters and bloggers, asserting that “Koch companies, the Koch foundations, Charles Koch and David Koch have no ties to and have never given money to FreedomWorks. In addition, no funding has been provided by Koch companies, the Koch foundations, Charles Koch or David Koch specifically to support the tea parties. Thanks for your consideration.” “I’ve never been to a Tea Party event,” David Koch told New York magazine's Andrew Goldman( http://nymag.com/news/features/67285/ ) earlier this year. “No one representing the Tea Party has ever even approached me.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Jersey Shore Do Bodyshots and Girl on Girl Kissing of the Day

I am onto Jersey Shore. They are so fucking obvious in their strategy to be the safe for TV version of Girls Gone Wild, by taking girls who would have been in the RV showering for Joe Francis, and making a show out of the trash. So in keeping up with obvious, almost boring and expected drunk girl at the party behavior that has become norm at college events, thanks to Girls Gone Wild and other Spring Break related bullshit….that includes body shots, girls kissing girls, flashing panty and tits, and all the other bullshit that comes with being a trashy party slut, only I am pretty sure these Jersey Shore bitches are sober and just going through the action. It is all bullshit, their ugly, let’s hope they die when their tour bus drives off a ravine because the driver is a hero willing to sacrifice himself to save humanity…. But on the positive side of everything, know that at least one teen who watches this bullshit is going to be busting out body shots at their next party….something…that just didn’t happen when I was in school, spoiling this generation even more that they already are… If you like leathery skinned, horribly aged monsters rockin out like college whores, even if they never went to college….this post is for you…

Paris Hilton May Claim Illegal Search To Beat Cocaine Rap

Boyfriend Cy Waits reportedly lost his job at the Wynn resort over the incident. By Gil Kaufman Paris Hilton Photo: Getty Images/ Carlos Alvarez It was a good news/ bad news scenario for Paris Hilton after the globe-trotting heiress was arrested for cocaine possession in Las Vegas over the weekend. The bad news, obviously, was that police allege they found cocaine in Hilton’s purse after pulling over boyfriend Cy Waits’ black Cadillac Escalade outside the Wynn Las Vegas resort on Friday night because they suspected that marijuana was being smoked inside the vehicle. But Radar Online is reporting that Hilton — who claimed the purse in which a small amount of cocaine was found did not belong to her — may be able to beat the charges because she was not searched on the scene, according to an unnamed source close to Hilton. The source said that Paris was taken into the security offices at the Wynn and searched there. “Cops discovered the cocaine inside the security offices where Paris was taken,” the source said. “Because Paris was taken away from the scene where the car was pulled over, this could potentially be an illegal search of a person … Las Vegas Metro didn’t follow standard procedures when Paris was arrested and her lawyer will be talking to the D.A. about this.” Hilton has said the purse belonged to a friend, though police have not identified any other passengers in the vehicle so far or pressed charges against anyone besides the reality star and Waits, who was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Hilton’s Las Vegas-based attorney, David Chesnoff, was slated to speak to the Las Vegas District Attorney’s office on Monday to argue that there is no basis for the charges, since, the source said, the amount of cocaine police allegedly found is “negligible, the purse it was found in wasn’t hers and Paris was illegally searched.” The news was not as good for nightclub boss Waits, who was reportedly fired by boss Steve Wynn following the arrest. According to the Las Vegas Review , the couple were arrested shortly after leaving the Wynn resort, where Waits and twin brother Jesse were promoted to nightclub operations chiefs late last week. The paper could not reach Waits and Wynn for comment to confirm the reports. KSNV-TV reported that earlier Friday night Hilton declined an offer to keep her limo for the night and instead said Waits would be driving her party around for the evening. Hilton thanked her fans for standing by her in her latest drug arrest, tweeting on Sunday, “I’m so thankful to all my fans for all the love and support you are giving me. Thank you all. Love you so much. Love Paris xoxo.’ ” The heiress had another run-in with the law over alleged drug possession earlier this summer when she was detained in South Africa at the World Cup for marijuana possession. But the case against Hilton was later dropped after officials learned that someone else in her group was smoking. Hilton has a history of getting in trouble for possessing substances and hitting the road, including a 23-day jail sentence in 2007 for violating probation stemming from a 2006 DUI bust. MSNBC Suggests Palin & Bachmann Encouraged Shooting Minorities, Ignores Obama’s ‘We Bring a Gun’ to Fight GOP

On Thursday’s The Ed Show on MSNBC, substitute host Cenk Uygur — also of the Young Turks — blamed conservative opposition to the Ground Zero mosque for acts of violence against Muslims, and charged that the Republican party is the “party of hate.” He soon added: “Then there`s the vitriolic fight against immigrants, undocumented ones and in Arizona just people who happen to look undocumented. And, of course, there`s the grand daddy of all prejudice, fear and hatred stoked up against Muslims in this country. Now, it`s gotten so bad that a young man stabbed a cabbie in the neck and face Tuesday after finding out that he was Muslim.” He eventually asked: “What black person, gay guy or girl, immigrant or Muslim-American in their right mind would vote for the Republican party? They might as well hang a sign around their neck saying I hate myself.” Uygur also recited a list of violent incidents from the past couple of years, while also running clips of conservatives like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Bill O’Reilly in an attempt to prove that they were responsible for inciting specific violent incidents. At one point, he even used edited clips of Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann in such a way as to suggest that they had encouraged people to shoot Muslims or other minorities. After recounting recent incidents of violence against Muslims, he tied in Palin and Bachmann: CENK UYGUR: If the manufactured rage against minorities and Muslims in particular was not bad enough, Republicans across the country have added an element of violent imagery to top it off. SARAH PALIN, AT PODIUM, UNDATED: It`s not a time to retreat. It`s a time to reload. REP. MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MN) AUDIO DATED MARCH 2009: I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue. Palin first used this phrase after the passage of ObamaCare, while the clip in question comes from an event in Nevada from March 27 of this year. And Bachmann’s quote was in reference to the Democratic energy plan. The MSNBC host did not mention that President Barack Obama himself once made a much more direct metaphor about using a gun to fight political opposition as he reassured attendees of a fund-raiser in Philadelphia in June 2008: “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun. Because from what I understand, folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.” More of the context of Palin’s words from the March 27 event, in which she clarified that her words were meant to inspire people to peacefully vote and take part in politics: If we stick to our principles, we’re going to be just fine. Now, when I talk about it’s not a time to retreat it’s a time to reload , what I’m talking about, now, media, try to get this right, okay? That’s not inciting violence. What that is doing is trying to inspire people to get involved in their local elections and these upcoming federal elections. It’s telling people that their arms are their vote. It’s not inciting violence. It’s telling people, don’t ever let anybody tell you to sit down and shut up, Americans. You stand up and you stand tall. And we’re just going to be fine. And more of the context of Bachmann’s statement : “And I’m going to have materials for people when they leave. I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us, having a revolution every now and then is a good thing.” Uygur also never relayed to viewers that the suspect in the stabbing case, Michael Enright, was involved with a liberal, pro-Muslim organization that supports building a mosque near Ground Zero, or that, according to Wednesday’s World News on ABC, anti-Muslim hate crimes are “not on the rise.” ABC News correspondent Jeremy Hubbard: “most recent FBI crime stats show in 2008, there were 123 anti-Islam bias crimes nationwide a number that paled in comparison to at least one other religion [1,055 against Jews]. And even in New York, police say crimes against Muslims are not on the rise.” Instead of informing MSNBC viewers of any holes in his anti-conservative theory, Uygur brought in Mark Potok of the left-wing Southern Poverty Law Center to agree with his indictment of Ground Zero mosque opponents. Potok: “I think it`s about as clear as it could be that this comes right out of the really rancid debate around the whole Ground Zero Islamic Center.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Thursday, August 26, The Ed Show on MSNBC, with critical portions in bold : CENK UYGUR, ANCHOR: Good evening, everybody and welcome to “The Ed Show.” I`m Cenk Uygur in for Ed Schultz. These stories are hot tonight. The right wing has spent weeks stoking hate on the Muslim community center near Ground Zero. Now that hate-filled rhetoric is turning into real violence and they pretend to be surprised. My commentary on that in just a moment. … Tonight, we start with the party of hate. The Republican Party in this country has been running on hate and division for the last 50 years. First, it was the southern strategy meant to discriminate against African-Americans in order to gain white southern votes. That worked in capturing the south for a generation or more, but they lost the entire African-American vote for even longer. That`s what happens when you slap someone across the face. Then, once that well started to run dry, they apologized. In 2005, Republican Chairman Ken Mehlman told the NAACP he was sorry: Quote, “Some Republicans gave up on winning the African-American vote looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I`m here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong.” And then they unapologetically picked their next target, gay Americans. They ran campaigns all across America, premised on taking away rights from gays in this country. Now, one of the architects of that plan, Ken Mehlman, who ran George W. Bush`s campaign in `04 and was the RNC chair in `06, has come out and said he`s gay. Again, our bad, our mistake, not that they`re stopping attacks on that front, I`ll have more on that later. Then there`s the vitriolic fight against immigrants, undocumented ones and in Arizona just people who happen to look undocumented. And, of course, there`s the grand daddy of all prejudice, fear and hatred stoked up against Muslims in this country. Now, it`s gotten so bad that a young man stabbed a cabbie in the neck and face Tuesday after finding out that he was Muslim. He yelled, “Asalaam Alaikum, this is your checkpoint.” Ironically, “Asalaam Alaikum,” means peace be with you. But Islam has been so twisted by conservative demagogues here that a peaceful greeting has been misinterpreted as a war cry and then used against Muslims. Then a man yesterday walked into a mosque in Queens and urinated all over their prayer rugs while yelling that all Muslims were terrorists. Gee, I wonder where he got that idea? NEWT GINGRICH, FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER: Nazis don`t have the right to put up a sign next to the holocaust museum in Washington. We would never accept the Japanese putting up a site next to Pearl Harbor. There`s no reason for to us accept a mosque next to the World Trade Center. UYGUR: If the manufactured rage against minorities and Muslims in particular was not bad enough, Republicans across the country have added an element of violent imagery to top it off. SARAH PALIN, AT PODIUM: It`s not a time to retreat. It`s a time to reload. REP. MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MN) AUDIO DATED MARCH 2009: I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue. UYGUR: And it hasn`t been just Muslim-Americans who`ve been on the receiving end of this violence. There was Scott Roeder who killed abortion provider Dr. Tiller after hearing provocation like this: BILL O`REILLY, FNC HOST: No matter what you think about the abortion issue, you should be very disturbed by what continues to happen in Kansas. This man, Dr. George Tiller – known as Tiller, the baby killer – is performing late-term abortions without defining the specific medical reasons why. UYGUR: Then there was the guy in Pittsburgh who killed three police officers because he was convinced they were coming for his guns. Gee, I wonder where he got that idea. GLENN BECK, FNC HOST: He will slowly but surely take away your gun or take away your ability to shoot a gun, carry a gun. He will make them more expensive. He`ll tax them out of existence. He will because he has said he would. He will tax your gun or take your gun away one way or another. UYGUR: Then there was the man in Tennessee who shot people inside what he considered a, quote, “liberal church.” He was reading O`Reilly and Hannity`s books on how terrible liberals are, and might have heard a rant like this. BECK: I beg you, look for the words social justice or economic justice on your church website. If you find it, run as fast as you can. UYGUR: Look, this is destructive to our country. It rips us all apart. The demagoguery especially based on race or religion is also destructive to the idea of America. That we are all created equal, and are all equally American. But it`s also destructive to the Republican Party. What black person, gay guy or girl, immigrant or Muslim American in their right mind would vote for the Republican Party? They might as well hang a sign around their neck saying I hate myself. So, in the end, the GOP will be left holding a shrinking part of the U.S. population screaming about how they hate everyone else. That`s a terrible political strategy. Don`t get me wrong. Demagoguing does work in the short run. That`s why they do it. They`ve been doing it since McCarthy because it gives them a temporary leg up in the next election, but in the long run, it kills your own brand. You`re not going to get a majority of even the white voters you think you`re going for by being the party of hate. They`re much better than that. They`re Americans. So after a couple more Muslims and others get attacked and the passion has died down, America realizes again that there`s no bogeyman coming to get them, the Sharia law is not about to be imposed in Des Moines or Sacramento, they will reject this politics of hate. Then where will the Republican Party be with even less voters, even more marginalized and probably even more angry? We`re witnessing the death pangs of a once great party, the party of Lincoln. That is no more. If they keep going this way, they`re going to go from the Grand Old Party to the sad little party and they`ll only have themselves to blame. Now, tell me what you think in our telephone survey the number to dial is 877-ed-msnbc. My question tonight is, do you think the GOP strategy of hate and fear will backfire? Press one for yes, press two for no. I`ll bring you the results later in the show. Now joining me is Mark Potok, one of America`s foremost experts on hate crimes. He`s the intelligence project director for the Southern Poverty Law Center. Mark, let`s look at what happened today with the cabbie or I should say yesterday getting stabbed. Do you think that`s just, oh, random coincidence that a Muslim cabbie happened to get stabbed yesterday or is this related to all the demagoguery about the so-called mosque near Ground Zero? MARK POTOK, SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER: Well, I think it`s about as clear as it could be that this comes right out of the really rancid debate around the whole Ground Zero Islamic Center. I mean, you named some of the villains. No doubt about it, Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin and so on, but we also have major outfits like the National Republican Trust Political Action Committee claiming that the Islamic center will be a celebration of the murder of 3,000 people. You know, that kind of language is not only grotesquely false, but it is obviously demonizing. And that kind of demonization, as you`ve suggested, is precisely what`s leading to what seems to be a real spike in anti-Muslim hate crimes. UYGUR: Mark, that leads to the obvious next question of what can we do about it because, I mean, you see it. They say, oh, the baby killer, “What are you going to do about it?” they`re asking their audience, and then, all of a sudden, somebody kills Dr. Tiller. You know, you see it with the liberal churches. You just saw the whole list. Now they`re doing it with Muslims, but they have First Amendment rights, so what can you do about it? POTOK: Well, one hopes that one can shame some of these political leaders into saying something a little more responsible. You know, you`re speaking about the Republican Party. It`s probably worth remembering that one of the very decent things that President Bush did was immediately after, actually nine days after 9/11, he gave a very important speech in which he talked about Muslims were not our enemies, Arabs were not our enemies. A very specific network of terrorists was our enemy. And I think that Bush actually had the effect of tamping down what could have been an absolutely amazing backlash against Muslims and perceived Muslims. It`s worth remembering immediately after 9/11, there was a 1700 percent rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes. But, by the beginning of the next year, 2002, that had dropped by more than two-thirds. So I think that when political leaders like Bush speak out responsibly, it works. It`s helpful. UYGUR: No, and you do have to give credit to Bush on that, there`s no question about that. What didn`t help is him randomly attacking another Muslim country that didn`t have anything to do with 9/11. That didn`t really help the situation. POTOK: Of course. UYGUR: And it seems the Republicans have gone the more radical since Bush. But one final question for you: What`s happened since Obama took office? Has there been a rise in hate crimes, etc.? POTOK: Well, there has definitely been a rise in threats towards the president, in domestic terrorism aimed at the president and at hate speech essentially revolving around the idea that we have a black man and his black family in the White House. So that`s undeniable. I mean, we`ve seen skin head assassination plots, a guy who wanted to set off a dirty bomb at the inauguration and a whole long list. Many of the cases you mentioned like the man who murdered three officers in Pittsburgh were also influenced by this anti-Obama atmosphere a nd the idea that whites are losing their majority in this country. So this seems to be we`re seeing right now a kind of another spasm of the same kind of hate directed against people who do not look like the white majority. UYGUR: All right, thank you, Mark. We appreciate you coming in.
