Exclusive: Five Questions With Reggae Artist Baby Cham

Dancehall Artist Talks New Music, How He Got Started In The Biz & His Breakout Hit “Ghetto Story” With Alicia Keys Baby Cham is back with a new single and a new album, but he’s still playing it close to his dancehall roots. The reggae artist sat down with Bossip recently to talk about his new album, “Lawless,” the moment he decided to become a dancehall artist and what he thinks the Caribbean music scene is lacking today. BOSSIP: How and when did you decide that you wanted to become a dancehall artist? Baby Cham: “My uncle had a sound system: speaker boxes on the street corners with a turntable. Super Cat used to perform on the sound system, John Wayne, Little John, just to name a few. I would go there every summer, and seeing artists like Super Cat pass through, in the yard on the microphone, I was like ‘What?! I love this!’ And that’s how I got the love for this. I was just a little kid looking at them. I started doing my own imitations, then I started writing my own lyrics after that.” BOSSIP: What do you think about the state of today’s reggae and dancehall music scene? Baby Cham: “The state of reggae and dancehall to me is good. There’s a reason why so many other genres are tapping into it and doing what they’re doing. It’s good. You have a lot of good kids coming out and doing the work. The only setback is the level of consistency is not there. It’s not on the artist’s part, it’s the production. That’s the only thing I would say what needs to improve – the production. The artists are delivering good music, good lyrics, but sometimes it’s the production that fluctuates.” BOSSIP: What was it like working with Alicia Keys on 2006’s “Ghetto Story” – a song that many consider to be the jumping off point for your career in America? Baby Cham: “It was beautiful. To me, it was one of the best things that could ever happen at the time for myself and dancehall. If you think about it, Alicia has done duets with a handful of people. She don’t do a lot of duets. And for her to say that she wanted to do that record – and the type of record it was. ‘Ghetto Story’ was not a pop record. It went pop, but it’s not a pop record. It’s really a hard, street record describing how life is hard growing up in the Third World. She kind of reached out and said if we were doing a remix, she wanted to be a part of it. For me, that says a lot about her.” BOSSIP: Tell us about your new single “Money Wine,” off your new album, “Lawless.” Baby Cham: “It’s a fun record. We were just thinking of something fun to start off the campaign with the album. The idea of “Money Wine” came about just by looking at females, and how they have different characteristics in the party. She might can’t twerk, but she’s doing something similar…It’s not a specific dance, it’s a dance that you do and do your best. Whether it’s for your significant other, or to create that buzz in the club, to steal the show or for yourself, that’s the money wine…We wanted that dancehall, gritty type of vibe.” BOSSIP: What’s next for you? Baby Cham: “Hitting the road. The album is done. The release date is in May. As of now, I’m just on the road. I’m on the grind. Nonstop. I’m just working working working.” *This interview was edited for clarity and space.

Empire Season 3 Episode 12 Recap: Strange Bedfellows

Hakeem Lyon is not the luckiest member of the Lyon clan.  That was addressed on Empire Season 3 Episode 12 when his birthday celebrations became a cause for concern for the people closest to him.  Meanwhile, Jamal continued to get closer to Philip, but did that mean hurting D-Major in the process? When the episode got underway, Hakeem was partying the night away in celebration for his birthday. He floated the idea of a live stream of the events, but Andre was very much against it.  However, it was quickly revealed he and Lucious were just trying to make Hakeem think they could not make the birthday party. Lucious also revealed he was not getting his son an expensive car he wanted.  We then switched gears to Jamal waking up after the night before with Philip. On his cell phone, D-Major came out in a live stream, but things took a crazy turn when Jamal’s ex arrived at his apartment.  View Slideshow: 19 Shows To Look Forward To In 2017 He found Philip rushing to get dressed, and Jamal told him to leave. D-Major was having none of it and said he came out for Jamal. This presented Jamal with some decisions as he wondered which man was best for him.  After some wise words from Cookie, Jamal had D-Major kicked out of Empire. This also paved the way for Philip to punch Major, but Jamal was less than impressed and said Major was going through tough time.  Surprisingly, Philip did not run off and ditch Jamal for his blatant favoritism over his ex-boyfriend.  At Hakeem’s birthday party, the venue was not impressed when they learned none of the family members would be attending and refused to pay Hakeem a fee.  The youngest Lyon then took the party to the Empire bar.  That’s when two thugs appeared and helped Hakeem. He got his fee and gave the men watches. Things turned dangerous when Tiana appeared with some friends.  The thugs started fighting with everyone, and the party was shut down. Tiana’s friend was injured, and she was upset that Hakeem did not ask about her.  Andre then gave Hakeem a verbal beat down and shut the live stream down, telling his brother he was done at Empire. Hakeem decided to spend the rest of his birthday with Bella.  View Slideshow: 17 Characters Who Ruined Perfectly Good TV Shows Yes, he does remember he has a kid. Lucious was shocked by his son appearing in the dead of night and chatted with him about fatherhood. They bonded, and Hakeem left with Bella.  While all of this was going down, Giuliana continued to pursue Andre to get closer to Lucious. At the conclusion of the episode, she got close to Andre before revealing her master plan to a thug.  She wanted to get closer to Lucious to take everything from him. Yes, we have another money grabber, you guys! In addition, Anika returned to town, and Leah offered to murder her. We’re not even kidding about that last part. This show is just crazy. Anika decided to get close to Tariq so the case could be dropped.  What did you think of the drama? View Slideshow: Empire Cast: Did You Know…?

Kendall Jenner’s Controversial Pepsi Ad of the Day

I think the biggest joke in this ad is that they are using Kendall Jenner and girl isn’t doing it for free, like she should be, according to me, because I understand there is value in using someone all the kids follow and who has positioned herself as relevant, but I think she wants it so bad, isn’t that hot, and the whole family disgusting, trashy, twats who shouldn’t be given money for anything due to their desperation and the fact that they do NOTHING…and have DONE nothing…and aren’t talented in anyway….it’s like “you wanna be in our ad, cool, but we aren’t paying you, we pay the professionals”….proving yet again that professional models don’t need much skill…. But people are mad because it mocks activism. It mocks black lives matter. The intent is to say “cops kill black people, but some rich cunt so detached from reality can hop into a protest and hand a cop a Pepsi, because she’s some rich cunt so detached from reality, and she didn’t really even want that Pepsi, she’s more a coke girl, but Pepsi are the one paying her so let’s pretend OK”….. So rich vapid twat – detached from the world – hops into a protest from a BUSY photoshoot because that’s what defines Kendall…doing photoshoots…with some random activist…and within a minute she’s with the cops….knowing she’s more like them than these dirty activist weirdos.. Either way, activists are pretty upset about it. Talk about parodying what goes on the world, making it cheesy and a joke, using a joke of a model, whose career is very real, but still a joke…. It’s nice to see a rich kid, uneducated and unaffected, can mend the differences between cops and protestors…blacks being shot by cops….because she is the beacon of white gold…white hope..and can solve everything with a Pepsi. The more absurd thing about this commercial isn’t the mocking of Black Lives Matter or the Women’s March, or really any anti-establishment commanding change event….it’s that this probably cost 10 million dollars to produce. 10 million dollars that could have been spent elsewhere on good. I guess this is why COKE is the party drug of choice. The only thing that would make this better, funnier, more powerful is if the cop shot her in the throat for being a fucking terrorist… I guess this has been a success for Pepsi….people be talking.
