The Tea Party … a history lesson

Dear Tea Party , Do you know what the Boston Tea Party was really about? Do you know what your party is really about? The Boston Tea Party had nothing to do with taxes being raised. Taxes were not raised at all. In fact, taxes were waved, lowering the cost of tea. The British upset colonists by lowering the cost of tea. They upset colonial business men who had stakes in colonial tea companies, or who feared that the British would make similar moves with other commodities. What happened at the Boston Tea Party raised the cost of tea for colonists. If you really wanted to be true to your name, you would head down to your local gas station and pour all the foreign gas on the ground, you would go to your nearest Ikea and steal all the screws from furniture kits, and you would head over to your Walmart and burn it down. You would try to raise import taxes, forcing Americans to pay more for everyday goods, so as to give American factories and workers a level playing field with those in China. You won’t do these things though, because you are just puppets. You are being used to stop any change in any direction, left or right, because an ineffective government is good for business. So, in a way, The Tea Party is a perfect name, but not for the reasons you think. Thanks, via chuckmccarthy.com and http://figrd.blogspot.com added by: figgdimension

Taylor Swift’s VMA Ballad ‘Innocent’ Divides MTV Readers

‘The song has a nice melody, but I’m starting to think that this was a little overdramatic,’ one fan writes. By James Dinh Taylor Swift performs at the 2010 VMAs Photo: John Shearer/ Wireimage.com Taylor Swift is known for using her real-life experiences as inspiration for her music, so when the singer took the VMA stage to debut her ballad “Innocent” — about someone who has briefly lost their way — the song of course left many thinking it was an ode to Kanye West . But MTV News readers are expressing mixed reactions to the track. “I don’t think that this song was put out there to humiliate Kanye,” commenter Shana said. Calling the singer’s performance “classy,” Shana added that “Innocent” is a sign of Swift’s maturity. “I don’t think this song was showing any sign of Taylor not being able to move on. I think she wanted people to know that we’re all human and she feels the same way about Kanye.” Another fan, Domi, said it wasn’t fair that Swift is getting flak for indirectly addressing last year’s event when Kanye did the same thing at the awards show : “All She Did Was Sing a Song. People Are Still Making Jokes About It. So If You’re Going To Say Something About Her Letting It Go.. Make Sure You Talk AboutEveryone Else Who Has Also Failed To Do So. Or Risk Serious Hypocrisy.” Other fans thought the song was to be expected from an artist like Swift who is known for writing about the boys in her life who have done her wrong. “I thought it was brilliant,” Kekoa wrote. “They said it in her intro. Her music is taken out of the pages of her diary. I mean, did people honestly not see this coming? The song itself is so powerful. She’s showing a maturity beyond her years.” But others weren’t too pleased with the singer rehashing 2009’s headline-making event. “The song has a nice melody, but I’m starting to think that this was a little overdramatic,” bxjam said. Fan Dustin said he understood Swift’s need to sing about her life experiences, but thought her performance intro — Swift replayed a montage of her now-infamous interruption — was just too much. “I get that she would write a song about the VMAs incident, but showing the clip of the incident from last year just made me smh,” he said. “I mean it was last year for crying out loud, get over it.” Swift’s “Innocent” drew criticism for its lyrical content, but also for another topic that had fans talking earlier this year : her vocal abilities. “I don’t have anything against the girl, but it seems like every time I see a Taylor Swift live performance she’s unable to carry a tune 100 percent. She did OK this year, but she was undoubtedly off-key at several moments through her performance,” Brian wrote. Another MTV commenter said the country/pop star needs to move on. “Kanye did address his mistakes but he really rose above all that drama and proved, once again, his greatness. So, people think that Taylor showed maturity, but she really showed immaturity by even addressing it at all. Either way, both did great, let’s move on.” Although Swift has yet to directly confirm that “Innocent” is about Kanye, she seemed intent on getting the song’s message across. She took to her official website after the performance to post the song’s official lyrics after high demand from fans. “A lot of you have been asking about the lyrics to ‘Innocent,’ so here they are. Love, Taylor,” she wrote . Share your thoughts on Taylor’s new song in the comments! Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns Leaves The Past Behind

‘The concepts blend human ideas with technology,’ Mike Shinoda says of new album. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington Photo: MTV News Linkin Park ‘s new A Thousand Suns album is a lot of things, most of which have nothing to do with their previous (mega-selling) efforts. By their own admission, the band spent nearly two years attempting to leave their past behind. To that end, it’s not a stretch to say they succeeded. The album, which hit stores Tuesday (September 14), is the band’s most divisive. But there’s one thing seemingly everyone can agree on: From this point forward, Linkin Park will never be the same band again. And though Suns represents the band at a crossroads, that doesn’t mean they abandoned everything that got them to this point. Quite the opposite, in fact. They’ve just taken the old and reworked it through the prism of the new.

127 Hours: Danny Boyle, James Franco and the Little Tool That Could

If you’ve been living under a smallish, dislodged boulder for the past few months and want to be completely surprised by what happens in Danny Boyle’s harrowing, uplifting, abusive, exhilarating, calculating and exceedingly clever 127 Hours, stop reading now. I mean it. Because you won’t want to know that in 127 Hours James Franco, as real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston, cuts his own arm off with a — OK, that I’m not going to tell you, because I just don’t want to spoil the effect of seeing this unassuming if somewhat diabolical-looking implement for the first time.

Britney Spears’ Ex-Bodyguard Must Prove Ongoing Harassment, Expert Says

Attorney Michael Bononi explains that the burden is on Fernando Flores to prove his hostile work environment. By Mawuse Ziegbe Britney Spears Photo: Pacific Coast News After mounting a successful comeback and maintaining a relatively low profile in the press for the past year, Britney Spears is now dealing with another bout of disturbing claims regarding her personal life. On Wednesday, Spears’ former bodyguard, Fernando Flores , filed a sexual harassment lawsuit alleging that the singer made multiple unwelcome passes at him, exposed herself on numerous occasions and engaged in sex in front of her two young sons. A post on Spears’ site denied the allegations. The accusations are harsh, however, according to a legal expert, it’s up to Flores to provide the evidence. “What he’s gonna have to show in making these allegations is that he was subjected to a hostile work environment, and it’s gonna have to be hostile in two ways: one, that a reasonable person similarly situated would have been offended by the conduct and secondly that he was actually offended by the conduct,” Michael Bononi, a partner at Bononi Law Group in Los Angeles, told MTV News. Bononi, who has worked for castmembers of “Desperate Housewives,” is not involved in Spears’ case, though has represented both sides in sexual harassment cases. He said juries typically look for material evidence, in the form of official complaints or concerns voiced to friends, that indicates wrongdoing on the defendant’s part. “What courts and what juries look [for] is: Did he act consistently with the way you would expect someone to act who was actually offended by this type of conduct? In other words, did he make complaints? Did he tell her to stop? Did he talk to his friends and colleagues?” Bononi said. “Is there corroboration that at the time this was happening it was actually bothering him, and are people going to come forward and be able to testify that at the time this stuff was transpiring, he was talking to them about it, talking about how offended if, at all, he was?” The suit states that Flores reported an incident in which Spears called him up to her room “for no other purpose or reason than to expose her naked or near naked body to Plaintiff.” According to the suit, Flores’ supervisor, Josh McMahan, shrugged off the incident, saying, “You know you liked it.” Flores also apparently voiced his issues several times, but “his complaints were ignored or mocked, and no action was taken to rectify the situation.” Bononi described California’s sexual harassment laws as “employee-friendly,” noting that there is no cap on punitive damages. However, the onus is still on Flores to demonstrate the extent to which his experience with Spears affected him. “That’s the big hurdle that he’s gonna have to get over: How offensive was this to him?” he said. “From what I’ve read … if it’s that she’s walked around him nude a few times and similar things, I haven’t read anything where she’s demanding sex or anything along those lines.” Bononi also noted that as member of a superstar’s security detail, Flores was likely prepped for challenging and intense situations. “As far as the salacious nature of these allegations, he’s a bodyguard … how offended was he if the conduct that he’s talking about is truthful. How injured is he? It’s hard to believe that he’s scarred from seeing her in her room a few times.” Bononi mentioned that Spears’ celebrity may work against her if she has actually crossed any boundaries. The high-profile nature of the case would likely spur others to come forward if the singer has a history of inappropriate behavior with her employees. “The celebrity status, where it can really have an impact on these cases, is if she has engaged in similar sort of conduct with other people in the past, this provides … an avenue for them to come forward and say, ‘Look what happened to me,’ ” Bononi said. “The celebrity status really does encourage people to come forward that have seen some of this or have experienced similar sort of stuff in the past from Britney if she has in fact done it.” While Spears’ past troubles may inform public opinion, Bononi said her previous personal issues or the fact that she makes a living touring the world, touting an ultra-sexy image, shouldn’t factor into the sexual harassment case. “There’s nothing in her past that I’m aware of that has anything to do with sexual harassment of employees,” Bononi said. “It should not be held against her. It makes her an easy target for these types of allegations.” Related Artists Britney Spears

Iran Paying Taliban for Dead US Soldiers

At least five Iranian companies stationed in Afghanistan are covertly funding Taliban militants, paying them salaries of $233 a month with a $1,000 bonus for killing an American soldier, according to the Sunday Times of London. Blowing up a US military vehicle is worth $6,000, making insurgents better paid than any Afghan police officer or soldier. “Iran will never stop funding us, because Americans are dangerous for them as well,” said a Taliban treasurer, who travels from the mountainous Wardak province to an Iranian construction company that operates out of Kabul to pick up the cash. “The money we get is not dirty. It is for jihad,” he said. The treasurer said he has picked up almost $79,000 in the past six months. Afghan intelligence and Taliban sources told the Times that the firms — set up with foreign aid money within the past six months — provide cash for a network of district Taliban treasurers to pay battlefield expenses and bonuses for killing the enemy and destroying their vehicles. The Iranian companies win contracts to supply materials and logistics to Afghans involved in reconstruction. The money often comes in the form of aid from foreign donors. Profits are transferred through poorly regulated Afghan banks — including Kabul Bank, which is partly owned by President Hamid Karzai's brother Mahmood — to Tehran and Dubai. From there, the money returns to Afghanistan through the informal Islamic banking system known as hawala. “This means the companies involved in funding the insurgency can cover their tracks easily. It makes it harder for us to trace the cash flow,” a senior Afghan intelligence official said. He said the Iranian companies had been formed with the intention of winning contracts funded by foreign aid so that donors' cash could be channeled into the insurgency. The Iranian embassy in Kabul refused to respond to the allegations.
