Mariah Carey Performs With Mother On Holiday TV Special

Superstar sang holiday classics and songs from her new Christmas album Merry Christmas II You during concert. By James Dinh Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia, sing on stage together during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” Photo: ABC It was an evening full of smiles, snow and festive cheer as Mariah Carey treated fans to an early Christmas gift with her own holiday TV special on Monday night. The ABC broadcast, appropriately titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” featured the pregnant singer spreading merry joy throughout Los Angeles’s Orpheum Theater with yuletide classics, holiday originals and a first-time onstage performance with her mother, Patricia Carey. Decked out in a Santa-esque minidress, Carey kicked the hour-long broadcast off with her high-energy tune “Oh Santa” — the lead single from her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You — as a pack of kids happily danced around the singer. “They say it’s unrealistic/ But I believe in you Saint Nick/ So grant this wish for me right quick/ Santa won’t you come and make him mine this Christmas night,” Mariah crooned before the sparkling stage setup. Carey also put her own spin on Christmas classics by mashing them together. “Alright, so we’re going to do a new song … actually a very old song,” she told the roaring crowd. “We created a medley of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ for the new album Merry Christmas II You, and we’re going to play that one for you tonight. And here we go. …” During the number, the singer displayed her vocal acrobatics, including her soothing falsetto, with the assistance of a backing choir before kicking off “O Holy Night,” which she described as one of her “favorite Christmas songs of all time.” Soon after, friend and musical collaborator Randy Jackson joined the singer for a hip-hop-flavored rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Housetop Celebration).” The “American Idol” judge appeared excited to take the stage with the singer as he urged the audience to applaud for “the hottest, the dopest, the bestest … Mariah Carey.” Later on, Carey sang another original, “When Christmas Comes,” which she revealed she’d never performed live. The song draws similarities to her inspirational 2002 song “Fly Like a Bird.” Before a clip from the holiday classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the soon-to-be mother traded the show’s earlier spectacles for a piano and accompanying player for a peaceful rendition of “Christmas Time Is Here” and fan favorite “Joy to the World.” The evening wasn’t just full of jolly anthems though, as the focus turned to Make-a-Wish child Mackenzie, who is in need of a new kidney. Footage of the young girl was shown alongside her adoptive mother, Ronna Williams. After exchanging a few words with her, Carey directed the audience to give a round of applause to Mackenzie and dedicated her “Christmas Time Is in the Air Again” to her. Making the celebration even more memorable was a performance by the singer and her mom, opera singer Patricia Carey, who took the stage together to perform a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hallelujah.” “Please give a big hand to my very special guest. My mother, Patricia Carey, is here tonight,” the songbird said, standing next to her mother. “We’re going to do a song from the new album Merry Christmas II You. This is something that’s very close to both of our hearts.” And if fans ever wondered where Mimi got her vocal talent, it became clear last night. In a singing extravaganza, Patricia took control of the performance as Mariah followed behind with repetition lines until she busted out her signature whistle notes. Carey ended the festivities on a high note (literally), singing her signature holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as an entourage of holiday characters danced around the powerhouse diva. The gang offered her a batch of gifts, but the singer kept in tune with the song’s lyrics by pushing their presents aside. As the song ended, the stage was transformed into a winter wonderland as a flood of snow fell atop the stage ceiling and onto Carey and company. Did you catch Mariah’s TV special? Patricia Neal Passes Away at 84

Oscar-winning actress Patricia Neal, whose life was marred by both success and tragedy, has died at the age of 84 of cancer, according to media reports. Neal won an Academy Award for her role in the 1963 film Hud alongside Paul Newman and boasted a long list of stage, film and TV credits over decades. She once had an affair with actor Gary Cooper with whom she starred in The Fountainhead and Bright Leaf but it ended in disaster after his wife found out. She was married to the British writer Roald Dahl for 30 years with whom she had five children. Their son suffered severe injuries after being hit by a taxi when he just four months old and their oldest child, daughter Olivia, died from the measles. R.I.P. Patricia Neal (1926-2010). Many years later, Neal’s marriage to Dahl ended after 30 years in 1983 after the writer had an affair with one of her friends and she moved from England to the United States where she split her time between New York and Martha’s Vineyard. When Neal was pregnant with their fifth child in 1965 she suffered three massive strokes and was in a coma for three weeks, but eventually recovered. “I think I was born stubborn, that’s all,” Neal said in a biography on the website of the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center that was dedicated in her honor in 1978 by the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Among her memorable performances are those in in 1950’s A Face in the Crowd , 1951’s The Day the Earth Stood Still , and 1960’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s. More recently, she appeared with Glenn Close in Cookie’s Fortune in 1999 and was featured in Lifetime’s movie Flying By with Billy Ray Cyrus in 2009.

Emma Stone and Woody Harrelson Added to Friends With Benefits

Forget all those other projects going under the title Friends with Benefits — the NBC sitcom and the Ashton Kutcher film that was previously known as F***buddies — this is the one you’ll want to keep an eye on. Already sporting the inspired tandem of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, the film has added former Zombieland co-stars Woody Harrelson and Emma Stone to the cast, joining Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, Jenna Elfman and Andy Samberg. Great and good, but Harrelson can talk pal Bill Murray into making a cameo appearance as Kunis’ stepdad, then they’d be onto something. [ The Wrap ]

Guru’s Sister ‘Never Had The Right Feeling’ About Solar

‘My brother decided to trust him with his life, and we see where that ended up,’ Patricia Elam tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid Gang Starr’s Guru and DJ Premier in 1994 Photo: Chi Modu/ diverseimages/ Getty Images Patricia Elam , older sister of late Gang Starr MC Keith “Guru” Elam , said she always thought her brother’s friend Solar was suspect. She said she never trusted him and, therefore, was never on good terms with the producer. “When [Guru] started working with Solar, even up until the time he was in the hospital and we learned Solar was the health care proxy, my father and my [older] brother were still sort of like, ‘This is what your brother wanted. We’re kinda gonna go along with it,’ ” Patricia recalled. “They were pretty trusting of Solar. [Solar] was feeding them the information he wanted them to have. I was always hesitant and a little more cynical. I never had the right feeling about him. I think he knew that.” Solar has said in the past that if there was any rift between himself and the Elam family , it was with Patricia and her son Justin, because they went public with the news that Guru was ill. Solar said that Guru and Patricia had been estranged for years. “When you ask me why he blames me, he’s a perceptive guy, and he knows if someone is with him or not,” Patricia explained. “I never was with [Solar] for various reason over the years. But now that my father and brother both see where this had gone, they are like, ‘You were right.’ They can’t get over it that someone would even behave in this manner. It’s been a learning experience.” Patricia admitted that Solar had a heavy influence over her brother, and she’s perplexed over their relationship to this day. “I don’t know what the influence was,” she said. “I don’t know if it was drugs, brainwashing, whatever. I don’t know if it was blackmail. For whatever reason, my brother decided to trust him with his life, and we see where that ended up. It’s an American tragedy, as far as I’m concerned.” Patricia revealed that the last time she talked to her brother was at the beginning of the year about three weeks before he went into the hospital for his terminal myeloma, and they talked about their family. The last time she saw him alive was mid-February, when he was in the hospital in a coma. She said when Guru was initially admitted, Solar told the family to not come and that the MC didn’t want anybody to see him in his weakened condition. But when he slipped into a coma, they all went. “When I went in there, I was so shocked at what he looked like,” she said, when asked if she saw any signs of neglect. “I didn’t pay attention to a bunch of fine details. I did notice his hair. He always shaved his head. It was odd to see [hair] grown around the edges. I didn’t get the feeling of he wasn’t being taken care of. I didn’t look at his nails, that kind of thing. I looked at how frail he was, how skeleton-like his head looked, how swollen his hands and feet were. I was shocked at his overall appearance.” Guru died April 19, succumbing to cancer. He has since been cremated, and a private memorial for the family is being planned with possibly a larger ceremony for his fans this summer on Guru’s birthday, July 17. Another point of contention for Patricia is the farewell letter Solar released , which he said Guru wrote. Patricia thinks the letter is a fake. “Oh, God, my brother never regained consciousness,” Patricia said. “Understand this: He never regained consciousness from the time he went into a coma in freaking mid-February until he died. You tell me how someone writes a letter in that state. He tells my son when he got there, ‘He’s gonna look like he was in a coma.’ No, he was in a coma. When [Guru] went into the hospital, he wasn’t thinking he was gonna die; he was thinking he would get better. But if he did think he was gonna die, and he was on his deathbed because his son was so important to him, he would have been writing a letter to his son. He wouldn’t have wrote a letter about ‘Oh, my freaking career and this that and the other, and this person is in charge of my life.’ No. That letter was so self-serving. I’m happy to see that most people say when they read it, ‘It doesn’t even sound like him.’ That’s not how my brother wrote. That’s not how my brother talked. “If he was writing a letter on his deathbed, it would have been to his son, [to] my father, that kind of thing,” she added. “Or it would have been about wishes he has for his son, [how] he hopes he left a positive legacy. That’s the kind of thing he would have written.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below.
