Can Someone Give Ted Danson a Hug?

When THR got a bunch of dramatic actors together last month for an Emmy roundtable, the trade noted that “humor dominated the hourlong discussion.” That’s a stark contrast to the comedy roundtable THR just put up, where TV funnymen like Jim Parsons, Neil Patrick Harris, and Ed Helms worry and excoriate themselves and get all “Tears of a Clown”-y. None self-flagellate harder, though, than Ted Danson.

Should Susan Boyle Guest Star on Glee?

At some point this year, Ryan Murphy is hoping to combine two of pop culture’s most buzzed-about recent phenomenons. The Glee creator is on record as saying he hopes Susan Boyle would consider a guest-starring role on his hit Fox show. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly , Murphy says Boyle wold make an ideal lunch lady in a December episode: “I think Kurt would just die to give her a Christmas makeover. I don’t even know if she’s interested, but it’s been pitched.” In real life, of course, the Britain’s Got Talent finalist has already undergone a makeover . Less than a full season into its run, Glee has already welcomed such guest stars as Kristin Chenoweth, Neil Patrick Harris and Molly Shannon. Would Boyle be a good fit on the show? Should she be next?

‘Glee’ Recap: Neil Patrick Harris Makes Strange Dreams Come True

NPH sang with Mr. Schue, and did a different kind of duet with Sue Sylvester. By Jean Bentley Neil Patrick Harris in “Glee” Photo: FOX Remember the weeks before “Glee” came back from hiatus and all we had to tide us over were glimpses of upcoming scenes in promos? And there was one promo that showed Mr. Schuster making out with Idina Menzel’s character, and for a hot second you were like “OMG he’s making out with Rachel!”? Well, you weren’t crazy. Anyone with eyes can see that the Broadway legend and Lea Michele are pretty much identical. But it wasn’t until tonight’s episode that we learned for sure what everyone had suspected all along: Shelby Corcoran, you are the mother. Rachel’s birth mother is, in fact, the Vocal Adrenaline coach, and Rachel’s foxy new boyfriend, former VA star-turned-New Directions transfer Jesse St. James, has been but a pawn in Shelby’s evil plan. Except the plan isn’t all that evil. Shelby explained to her young minion that the only thing she regretted in life was not being able to meet her daughter. Unfortunately, the surrogate contract wouldn’t let her contact Rachel until Rachel turned 18. To meet any sooner, it had to be Rachel’s idea. Shelby had Jesse get close to Rachel (seducing her was his idea) and encourage her to try to find her birth mother. He planted a tape from Shelby in the box of baby stuff Rachel dug out from her basement, helping her realize that no, her birth mother wasn’t Patti LuPone or Bernadette Peters. It took some pressing, but he finally got Rachel to listen to the tape of Shelby singing “I Dreamed a Dream,” which turned into a lovely mother/daughter duet. Speaking of dreams, Neil Patrick Harris dropped by William McKinley High to crush a few. NPH is always great when he’s playing a jerk (which seems incongruous since he appears to be such a nice guy in real life), and last night’s douche du jour was Bryan Ryan, Mr. Schue’s former glee club nemesis and the current school board member in charge of extracurricular funding. He was at the school deciding which arts program to cut and had his eye on the glee club, since it had brought him nothing but pain when his dream of becoming a famous performer didn’t pan out. He advised the gleeks that their dreams, too, would one day come crashing down around them and lead to a crack addiction. Schuester pleaded his case to keep the club and let the kids have their dreams, but Bryan wouldn’t relent. That is, until his love of performing (and zeal for competition) was reignited. Will and Bryan both went out for the part of Jean Valjean in the local Lima production of “Les Mis#233;rables,” and a tight audition schedule meant they had to try out together by dueting on “Dream On.” Schue got the part, but wound up trading it to Bryan Ryan to save the glee club. Also, somehow Bryan Ryan and Sue Sylvester totally DID IT. Yeah. Try to get that mental picture out of your brain before we continue. Since the drama with his rival prevented Mr. Schuester from giving the kids an assignment this week, Tina created her own assignment to help Artie achieve his dream of being able to dance. But instead of helping Artie deal with his reality and come up with his own way of dancing, Tina told him that he would definitely be able to walk (and dance) one day. In a particularly heartbreaking scene, Artie tried to use crutches to walk around the choir room, but fell on his face instead. Artie daydreamed leading an intricate mall-set dance number to “The Safety Dance,” which gave former boy-bander Kevin McHale a chance to get out of the wheelchair and show off his sweet dance moves. It was also a cute homage to the “Glee” flash mobs that dedicated fans have organized in cities like Seattle and Rome. But Artie eventually realized that this dream would never happen. Tina choreographed a tap dance number to “Dream a Little Dream of Me” with Mike Chang instead, while Artie sang. What did you think of Neil Patrick Harris’ guest appearance on “Glee”? What’s On: How I Met Your Matthew Morrison

Ryan Seacrest Says Justin Bieber Could Replace Simon Cowell On ‘Idol’

‘I would want a much younger, thinner, more charming Simon,’ the ‘American Idol’ host says of new judge. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Ryan Seacrest Photo: MTV News At KIIS-FM’s annual Wango Tango festival on Saturday, the host of the station’s “On-Air With Ryan Seacrest” was feeling a little overshadowed as Bieber Fever spread in Los Angeles’ Staples Center. “The vibe is ‘Where’s Justin Bieber ? — that’s the vibe,” Seacrest joked to MTV News, when we caught up with him backstage. “All the girls that are hanging out here, even the ones that work for us, are like, ‘Have you seen him ?’ I’m like, ‘I’m right here.’ And they’re like, ‘No, Justin Bieber him.’ ” But when talk turned to the topic of who should replace departing “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell next season, Seacrest had some ideas. “It’s gonna be different because there’s going to be an empty chair at the end of that panel, the “AI” host said. “I’m not quite sure who’s going into that chair, so it’s a big [decision],” he added. The tough-talking Brit will go his own way after season nine with plans to head up the American version of talent show “The X Factor.” “Who would I want in that chair?” Seacrest wondered aloud. “I would want a much younger, thinner, more charming Simon. … Bieber — he’s the guy!” Recently, another “Idol” alum, guest judge Neil Patrick Harris , weighed in on who he would like to see take over for Cowell . And it wasn’t Bieber. “I feel like [Simon]’s irreplaceable,” Harris said. “I feel like whoever gets that spot has such a target on their back. I think Stern would be great. I think he’s adequately polarizing and has strong opinions about things in a legitimate way, and I’m a fan of Howard Stern.” Would Bieber make a good “American Idol” judge? Can he fill Simon’s chair? Samantha Ronson to Lindsay Lohan: Lay Off the Crack!

“If you’re having girl problems I feel bad for you son … I got 99 problems but a b!tch ain’t one.” – Jay-Z If only Samantha Ronson could say the same. Whatever dumpster Lindsay Lohan ended up in last night, she got the obligatory, accusatory Tweets out first. Alleging that her ex is selling her out to celebrity gossip sites, along with plenty of other gibberish, the train wreck had this to say to her DJ ex: I’m pretty sure that @samantharonson just threw a fit @33years old and my friend tal @draishollywood … illegally open NOW at this hour Asked me, after being here jus 4 Timbalands birthday-to leave even though she stayed over just 2nights ago-tired of @samantharonson Playing the innocent card, while chatting to tmz just like my ex-father, when all I’ve ever done is fall for a girl Yep. All she’s ever done is fall for a girl … hurl drinks at a girl, accuse a girl of doing Miley’s ex , fall in a cactus, and have DFCS officials visit, etc. WHAT A MESS : We sympathize with Samantha . This rant apparently resulted from LL getting kicked out of a club (so much for her retirement ) last night at Ronson’s request after she went insane in there. Sam’s response to Lindsay’s online babbling was to Tweet the following: “I’m not here. This isn’t happening.” If I sing that to myself enough times will it be true? One more thing- if you’re gonna be an idiot an do coke- do it outside the bathroom- some of us actually use them to pee in. Jack and crack will make for some crazy tweets. Indeed. We eagerly await her retaliatory Tweets once the janitor tosses the previous night’s trash into the bin outside the club and she wakes up in there. NOTE : Follow THG on Twitter … we won’t spread lies about you.

Lady GaGa, Conan O’Brien, Others: Very Influential

Time Magazine has come out with its annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people. It’s divided into four categories (Leaders, Heroes, Thinkers and Artists), although we have no idea how Sarah Palin ended up in the number-nine slot as a “Leader.” What does she lead, exactly? Whatever organization pays her the most money to speak at its event? But anyway. Lady GaGa is considered the most influential artist on the planet, with Conan O’Brien ranking second. Also in the top 10: Oprah, Taylor Swift and Robert Pattinson . The magazine spoke to a number of people closely associated to these celebrities and received the following takes on them: Cyndi Lauper on Lady GaGa : Lady Gaga’s art captures the period we’re in right now. She isn’t a pop act, she is a performance artist. She herself is the art. She is the sculpture. George Lopez on Conan O’Brien : Conan’s tenacity and wit have been an inspiration to me on my own late-night show. I’m happy and proud that we’ll be playing on the same team when he comes to basic cable. Chris Weitz on Robert Pattinson : Rob is a reserved, bookish sort of specimen, a guy who’d rather spend the night at the corner table in the pub with friends — a bit of a weirdo, frankly, in the best sense. For the complete list of influential artists, see below. Lady Gaga Conan O’Brien Kathryn Bigelow Oprah Winfrey Valery Gergiev Robert Pattinson Ashton Kutcher Suzanne Collins Taylor Swift Neil Patrick Harris Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof Prince Lea Michele Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik Simon Cowell Neill Blomkamp Elton John Marc Jacobs David Chang Banksy Chetan Bhagat Sandra Bullock Ricky Gervais Han Han James Cameron

Kal Penn Robbed At Gunpoint

‘Harold & Kumar’ actor’s wallet and cell phone were taken early Tuesday morning in Washington, D.C. By Greg M. Schwartz Kal Penn Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Kal Penn was robbed at gunpoint in Washington, D.C., at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday (April 20), according to The Washington Post. Penn, best known for his roles in the “Harold & Kumar” films and TV’s “House,” reported that the first suspect approached him with a gun and ordered him to get down on the ground before taking his wallet and cell phone. A second suspect then joined him. Jennifer Goodwin, Penn’s agent, confirmed to The Associated Press. that the actor was robbed early Tuesday morning. Penn recently resigned from an associate-director job in the White House Office of Public Engagement to return to his acting career. Before stepping down, he had been tasked with working with Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, as well as arts groups. Penn took the job in April 2009 but announced earlier this month that he was leaving his post to participate in a third “Harold & Kumar” flick. “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” will hit theaters in November. Penn’s “Harold & Kumar” co-star John Cho recently confirmed to Collider.com that the “Christmas” script is in. He said the story is set sometime after the events of the second movie and that there’s a plan to bring Neil Patrick Harris back, despite the fact ( spoiler alert! ) that he was killed in “Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.”

Kal Penn Robbed

The move to Washington, D.C. , was supposed to the beginning of Kal Penn’s new idealistic career in politics. Early this morning it turned nightmarish as the Harold and Kumar series star was reportedly robbed at gunpoint while walking in the city. The assailant took Penn’s wallet and other personal property; he wasn’t otherwise harmed. Naturally the only response to this in the moment, ” What would Neil Patrick Harris do? “, but too little too late. [ TMZ ]

‘Glee’ Stars Tell Oprah How The Show Has Changed Their Lives

‘To be a part of a project that celebrates your differences … has been very therapeutic,’ Chris Colfer says. By Eric Ditzian Chris Colfer on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Photo: Harpo Productions The Gleeks invaded “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Wednesday (April 7). Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch and the rest of the cast of Fox’s hit high school musical drama performed a rendition of fan favorite “Somebody to Love,” took “Oprah” on a tour of their set and spoke with the host about how “Glee” has changed their lives. “I was known as the musical-theater girl and nobody looked at that as being cool,” Michele said. “It was odd to them. They didn’t understand it. They didn’t understand people who did the plays or who sang. It was cool if you played sports. It was very typical. I love that our show shows we can be cool too.” Lynche, a comedy vet with a string of film roles alongside the likes of Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, has also seen her public perception change vastly since “Glee” hit the airwaves last year — albeit in a slightly different manner. “My demo is 16-year-old boys,” she laughed. “They never noticed me when I was 16, you know? I wasn’t in the hip crowd. But now all of a sudden there’s these cool people in coffee shops going, ‘Hey!’ I go back to my 14-year-old self.” It’s just that idea of being accepted by those around you, series co-creator Ryan Murphy explained, that the show is trying to get across. “To me, the show is about celebrating the difference in you,” he said. “I think when you’re that age, you think the difference in you is the worst thing, and I think the older you get, you find out that it’s the best thing. So that’s what the show is about.” Of course, it’s also about the music-filled drama of William McKinley High School, and the cast welcomed “Oprah” onto the Paramount set for a day in the life of “Glee.” Work started at 7 a.m. as the cast shuffled onto the lot and got started with a dance rehearsal set to Parliament’s “Give Up the Funk.” From there, it was on to hair and makeup and then to wardrobe. Guest star Neil Patrick Harris was on hand to play what he described as a villainous character. The episode is set to air May 18. Back at “Oprah,” the cast kept coming back to the idea about how working on “Glee” had helped them come to terms with their true selves. “When I was in high school, I was kind of daily reminded of my imperfections by other students and sometimes the teachers,” co-star Chris Colfer said. “To be a part of a project that kind of celebrates your differences and makes your disadvantages your advantages has been very therapeutic.” “Glee” returns next Tuesday after “American Idol.” Did you see the “Glee” stars on “Oprah”? Are you excited for the show’s return? Let us know in the comments below!
