Paula Deen Racial Discrimination Lawsuit DISMISSED; Settlement Likely Reached

After doing considerable damage to her empire, the racial and sexual discrimination lawsuit against Paula Deen has now been formally dismissed. It is believed that a confidential settlement was reached. In any case, the suit by Lisa Jackson – which blew up against Deen when she admitted using racial slurs in a deposition, which leaked to the media – is no longer. Jackson, who worked as General Manager at Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House in Georgia, filed a lawsuit claiming racial and sexual harassment. The racial discrimination claim was dismissed by a judge earlier this month because Lisa, who is white, was deemed an “accidental victim” at best. Deen denied any racial discrimination at work or toward Jackson or other employees; her admission of racial slurs pertained to using them in the past. The exact context of the slurs she used is not known, nor is the source of the deposition’s leak, which caused the dominoes to fall fast and hard for Deen. Paula Deen Lawsuit Claim Thrown Out Now the entirety of Jackson’s lawsuit has been dismissed, and while TMZ reports that all signs point to a settlement , any terms appear to be confidential. The deposition video has been blocked by court order and will never be released, so the matter is officially closed, albeit still tinged with controversy. Long story short: any racial slurs made by Deen , or comments that she and her cohorts may or may not have made, were deemed of no consequence. Discrimination of a sexual nature was also disputed by Paula, though we’ll never know how it would have played out, given the apparent settlement. Regardless, it’s rather ironic that Deen’s career took a MASSIVE hit because of a leaked deposition, and not anything alleged in the actual lawsuit.

Oprah Winfrey Apology Over Racism Controversy: Heartfelt or Passive-Aggressive BS?

Oprah Winfrey’s apology over the racism flap she caused by recalling a trip to Switzerland in a recent interview has been criticized by some as inauthentic. Oprah Winfrey on Paula Deen, Racism Earlier this week, she said she was “sorry” for fallout that ensued after she told ET about a racist encounter at a purse store in the European country. The Butler star made the allegations (above) when asked about a time she encountered racism personally – in Switzerland, where no one knows her. She claimed a shop owner refused to even show her a ridiculously expensive purse, assuming she could not afford it, presumably because she’s black. The COUNTRY of Switzerland apologized, while the shop owner says the whole thing was a “misunderstanding” and had “nothing to do with racism.” Last night, Oprah backpedaled a bit, apologizing for the racism controversy , saying, “I think that incident in Switzerland was just an incident in Switzerland.” “I’m really sorry that it got blown up,” Winfrey added. “I purposefully did not mention the name of the store. I’m sorry that I said it was Switzerland.” The thing is, as TMZ notes, Oprah couldn’t possibly believe allegations of racism made by OPRAH would go unreported or taken lightly by the media. Pretending not to know that telling that story would spark controversy and become a huge story would be naive at best … and Oprah is far from that. The question is: Does she feel legitimately bad about potentially blowing something out of proportion, or is she just walking it back to save face now? According to the celebrity gossip site, Oprah’s encounter wasn’t really about race, but the fact that she wasn’t treated the way she is accustomed to. Perhaps, with the employee alleging that she is being unfairly portrayed, O’s feeling guilty. The question for you, THGers: Is her apology sincere?   Sincere Half-a$$ed View Poll »

Praise Caucasian Jesus! Paula Deen Wins Racial Discrimination Lawsuit After Judge Rules Ex-Employee Can’t Sue Because She’s White!

Ain’t that bout a beyotch! Paula Deen Wins Racial Discrimination Lawsuit Via TMZ reports: In one of the most supremely ironic court decisions in a long time, a judge just threw out the racial discrimination claim filed against Paula Deen — the very lawsuit that destroyed the famous chef. A judge just ruled … Lisa Jackson had no right to claim racial discrimination, BECAUSE SHE’S WHITE! Any comments that Deen or her cohorts may have made had no legal consequence to her, because she’s simply not the right color. Jackson made a tenuous argument that someone in her family was bi-racial — something that may not be true at all. But the judge said even if it were true, she was at best an “accidental victim.” Short story — Jackson ruined Paula with a bogus claim. The case goes on, because Jackson also claims sexual discrimination, and so far there’s not basis to doubt that she’s a woman. Paula Deen may have won the lawsuit but her butter-ball empire is still destroyed. Welp!

Adam Jones Accuses San Francisco Fan of Throwing Banana at Him

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones has come out with a damning accusation against a fan in San Francisco. Following his team’s 10-2 victory over the Giants yesterday, Jones Tweeted the following to his 129,000 followers: “I want to thank whatever slapd— threw that banana towards my direction in CF in the last inning. Way to show ur class u jacka–.” Adam Jones Alleges Racist Fan Interaction Jones is African-American and the tossing of a banana has generally been considered an especially racist move. Jim Moorehead, the Giants’ senior director of media relations, told The Baltimore Sun that he will be reviewing security footage today in order to investigate the allegation. “I love how some ppl are defending the actions by someone today,” Jones wrote as a follow-up Tweet. “Shows how u really are also. All good wit me. I just #StayHungry.” Jones added that he may “get off social media soon” based on the reaction he’s received to this claim. Jones went 2 for 5 in the game and hit a home run, as the Orioles continue to battle for a playoff spot and head to Arizona for a three-game series that starts tonight.

Paula Deen Racial Discrimination Lawsuit Claim: DISMISSED By Judge!

It’s little consolation now, but the racial discrimination claim in the lawsuit by Lisa Jackson that torpedoed Paula Deen’s career has been thrown out. A judge just ruled in Paula’s favor after Deen claimed Jackson had no right to claim racial discrimination … basically because she is also white. Any racial slurs made by Deen or comments that she and her cohorts may or may not have made have no legal consequence to her, the judge decided. Jackson also made the tenuous argument that someone in her family is bi-racial, which Paula disputes. The judge said even so, she was an ” accidental victim .” The lawsuit as a whole is still in effect, because Jackson also claims sexual discrimination, and that part can’t be dismissed on quite the same grounds. However, it’s extremely ironic that Paula’s career took a HUGE hit because of a leaked deposition she gave following a bogus claim of racial discrimination. Is she perfect? Absolutely not. Is the fact that she, by her own admission, used racial slurs in the past enough to change people’s opinions of her? Clearly. Still, her supporters will surely argue that damage that has been done feels disproportionate when compared to the actual impact of her actions. Especially now that at least part of the lawsuit was unfounded. The Food Network and other business partners dropped her after she acknowledged using racial slurs in the past during questioning by Jackson’s lawyers. Deen denies all of Jackson’s allegations of discrimination, which she alleges she experienced during the five years she worked at Paula’s restaurant.

Oprah on Paula Deen N-Word Scandal: For Me, It’s Just Sad

Oprah Winfrey befriended Paula Deen in early 2012 and even spent a night at Deen’s Georgia home, where she conducted a wide-ranging interview. Over a year later, in a deposition for a lawsuit, Deen admitted using racial slurs in the past, a revelation that rankled many, including her friend. Until now, Winfrey had remained silent on her friend’s controversy, but addressed it this week during a sit-down of her own for her new film The Butler . Oprah Winfrey on Paula Deen, Racism “In the very first days I tried to reach her and then I decided to stay out of it as I saw it blowing up,” Winfrey told ET this week. “In time she will be fine.” “For me, it all just felt kind of sad.” Oprah’s feelings on the n-word are very clear, but she believes people need to let the “dust settle” before they can have a “real conversation” about race. She says she is well aware of racism today, even if she’s reached the point where at times it’s less overt than for other women who are minorities. “You know, you see those fools on Twitter sometime say ridiculous things,” Winfrey says. “Nobody in their right mind is going to call me the N-word.” “But nobody in their right mind is going to do that to my face, because true racism is being able to have power over somebody else,” Winfrey explains. “So that doesn’t happen to me that way.” “It shows up for me if I’m in a boardroom or situations where I’m the only woman or I’m the only African American person within a hundred mile radius.” “I can see in the energy of the people, they don’t sense that I should be holding one of those seats. I can sense that. But I can never tell, ‘Is it racism? Is it sexism?'” When asked to comment about Deen during another interview with Extra , the 59-year-old laughed and struck a lighter tone than she did with ET. “Oh my god! I don’t have anything to do with Paula Deen ,” she insisted. “She is not the first white lady to use the N-word! Good lord!”

Paula Deen Museum: Coming to Albany, Georgia!

She’s been dropped by corporate partners left and right, but a two-year quest to dedicate a Paula Deen museum in Albany, Georgia, is apparently still underway. Business woman BJ Fletcher has been working with the Deens and the city to move Paula’s childhood to one of two downtown locations for the museum. “Well, if you think about it, when visitors come, the first thing they do is they come to the Visitor’s Bureau,” she said of the potential Albany attraction . “The Riverfront Bar-be-que, Ice Cream Scoops, Flint Riverquarium, et cetera. And it’s be cool to sort of sandwich it right in the middle of all of that.” The proposed Paula Deen Museum would include a retail shop as well as cooking facilities for students that would no doubt feature Paula Deen recipes . No official location or date has been established, but it looks like it’ll take more than lawsuits or Aunt Jemima rumors to taint her reputation back home. What do you think, THGers? Would you stop by?
