2012 Olympic ceremony goes to Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry

Two British directors named as the creative bosses of the London 2012 opening ceremony Two of Britain’s most respected directors – Stephen Daldry and Danny Boyle – were today named as the creative bosses of the London 2012 opening ceremony. Daldry will be in overall creative charge of ceremonies while Boyle will be artistic director of the opening ceremony itself. Oscar-winner Boyle said he was honoured: “It’s a completely unique opportunity to contribute to what I’m sure are going to be a fantastic games. I’m really excited to be involved.” Four executive producers will oversee the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic games. As well as Daldry, Hamish Hamilton – best known for his direction of live TV events – will be executive producer, broadcast; Mark Fisher – who has staged every Rolling Stones show since 1989 – will be executive producer, design; and Catherine Ugwu, producer of the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth games, will be executive producer, production. Daldry said: “Myself and my co-executive producers will ensure there is creative continuity across all four ceremonies, that the public have real engagement and that we continue to attract into the key roles the best talent in the world. I’m delighted to be part of the team.” The team was unveiled at 3 Mills Studios in east London this morning. Lancashire-born Boyle, who returns to theatre direction this year with a new version of Frankenstein at the National Theatre, is currently working on his film 127 Hours, the true story of mountaineer Aron Ralston who amputated his own arm after it was trapped by a boulder. Daldry has been busy with Billy Elliot the Musical, opening a new stage version in Chicago. This will be followed by versions in Korea, Japan, Germany and Holland. He has also been in talks with Disney about a stage version of Dumbo. Unlike the £70m budget granted to the Chinese film director Zhang Yimou for the 2008 Beijing games, the London team will have a total of £40m for all four ceremonies. Yimou’s four-hour peace and harmony ceremony was largely judged a success, apart from a rumpus over a little girl miming. Boyle and Daldry are starting from a blank slate although they will, presumably, look back on the best and worst of previous ceremonies. It’s a safe bet to assume they will steer clear of the military-style pageant of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where even the boys in togas marched. And there won’t be any need to deploy the rocket man in a jet pack which wowed audiences during the 1984 Los Angeles games. Sydney’s use of Kylie Minogue in 2000 singing Dancing Queen in a pink, spangly leotard is an idea; as is the Hello Kitty routines from Seoul in 1988. The 1936 ceremony, meanwhile, is probably one to skip over altogether. Olympic games 2012 Danny Boyle Stephen Daldry London Mark Brown guardian.co.uk

Rihanna Says Boyfriend Matt Kemp Keeps Her ‘Sane’

Pop star dishes about her current relationship and her past year in Elle magazine. By Mawuse Ziegbe Rihanna Photo: Michael Tran/ FilmMagic From the dramatic fashion statements to the sharp-edged radio hits Rihanna has evolved over the past year from pop princess to rock star. While last year her personal life was the source of much chronicled drama, the singer recently revealed that these days it’s her romance with boyfriend and L.A. Dodgers player Matt Kemp that keeps her grounded. “I have a boyfriend. I’m so happy. I feel really comfortable, and it’s so easy,” Rihanna gushes in the latest issue of Elle magazine. “I have such a chaotic life, but at the end of the day, that is just my peace. It keeps me sane, really, talking to him and talking to my family.” Rihanna has spent most of the past year reinventing herself as a boundary-pushing artist; abandoning her sunny pop jams and good-girl charm in favor of gritty hits and a highly stylized image. Earlier this week, “Love the Way You Lie,” her collaboration with Eminem that laments the torturous cycle of an abusive relationship, leaked to the Internet. And in the interview with Elle, the singer opened up about her emotional state over a year ago when she sustained the now infamously brutal attack at the hands of former boyfriend Chris Brown. “A year ago, I was very confused,” the star revealed to Elle. “Because he was my best friend. All of a sudden, one night changed our whole lives — not only our friendship, but our lives. I wanted to wake up one day and just not have that pain anymore. I wanted to be with him again or get over him — it was either-or. I just didn’t want to feel the pain, the confusion.” The superstar talked about the moody, black-and-white album art of Rated R, which she released in the wake of her “life-changing” experience with Brown. “I wanted pictures that represented strength and fearlessness but still femininity — a strong woman who can be vulnerable. Every woman is made up of vulnerability and strength; no matter what race you are, no matter what you’ve been through in your life.” After lighting up red carpets with her daring fashion choices, inspiring legions of girls to lop off their locks to match her evolving pixie cut, Rih Rih is known as much for her style as her sound. When it comes to designers, the star said she favors labels with an equally intrepid approach to fashion. “I respect designers who aren’t afraid to go outside of the box,” she said. “I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and I saw girls who are thicker than me, beautiful and voluptuous and different ethnicities. That made me so excited. I thought, ‘OK, I can work that, for sure.’ ” What is your favorite of Rihanna’s recent looks? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Rihanna

False claim for Nobel Peace Prize

[EDIT] What follows is a journey of verification for a claim. In the end, the lesson learned here is to ALWAYS contact the organization or person first, and when your wrong own it and make amends. At present, Waiting for final verification on Peace prize rules to ensure 100% legitimacy of claim… The rightness or wrongness of this claim really rest with the Nobel peace prize committee as this case may be more about a technicality, or wording. When the claim is fully verified I will give you either my loose verification on the authenticity of award claim… http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1997/icbl.html in the course of 1991, several nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and individuals began simultaneously to discuss the necessity of coordinating initiatives and calls for a ban on antipersonnel landmines. Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights, and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation came together in October 1992 to formalize the International Campaign to Ban Landmines. The false claim of winning the 1997 or any other year for which the Nobel prize was awarded, puts into serious jeopardy any further claims they have regarding any subject. This could show unethical or inattentive behavior that would allow their research into ethics violations by physicians look sloppy, inaccurate, or hypocritical. As the claim revolves around specific rules issues, it may be a simple case of inaccuracy in wording or the claim may be completely accurate as stated. See the Physicians for human rights claim on their website: http://physiciansforhumanrights.org/ See the entire list of Nobel Prize winners: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/lists/all/index.html See the entire lists of organizations to win the Nobel Peace prize: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/lists/organizations.html See the winner for the 1997 Nobel Peace prize: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1997/icbl.html Currently the organization “Physicians for human rights” claims CIA experimentation on prisoners under the Bush administration. If the claim is found to be true it could undermine the believability of any accusations they make. This would not only undermine this organization but, any organization that validates their present and future claims. Notifying NYT writer New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/08/opinion/08tue1.html Currently notifying NYT and LA Times… Update: June 8, 2010 2:32pm CT Contacted PHR with following message: On your home page it is mentioned that your organization is a Nobel prize winning institution. I have thus far found no verification of such a claim. If you could email me verification of this claim it would be greatly appreciated. A search of PHR's news release archive: News releases library search shows no notification for their claim of having been awarded a Nobel prize for the year of 1997, or any other year. It would seem odd for an institution to not release news of such a prestigious honor, and yet claim the award on their home page. News release library link http://physiciansforhumanrights.org/library/phr-library-search.html?document_typ… Awaiting reply and continuing investigation… Update: June 8, 2010 2:43pm CT Dear Mr. _______, please see this page on the Nobel Foundation website: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/1997/icbl.html . PHR was a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and shared the 1997 prize with the other members. We also are still active in this work, and currently have a petition available to join, asking President Obama to have the US finally join the ban on the use of landmines. That petition can be found here: http://actnow-phr.org/campaign/obama_landmine_action . As such I leave the post intact to illustrate humility, and to show that if you are incorrect you need to own it. UPDATE: 3:28 CT June 8, 2010 Notified everyone contacted previously, and either thanked for info or informed them of my mistake. Awaiting final confirmation from Nobel prize organization to insure that there is no technical rule violated in the usage; however at present it is best to assume that PHR's claims are indeed legitimate. UPDATE: 3:47 CT June 8, 2010 Contacted Nobel prize organization with following message: I had previously noted that PHR claims a shared 1997 Nobel prize under the organization of the International Coalition to Ban Landmines (ICBL), and would like some clarification on the rules for the Peace prize specifically. I am aware that the Peace prize can be awarded to entire organizations; however I am unsure as to whether an organization such as PHR that makes up part of another organization, in this case the ICBL, is entitled to make any claims on the award. In the case of PHR they claim a “shared 1997 Nobel Peace prize”. Regarding your rules, is this claim legitimate, accurate, or should it be worded in some other way? It is hard for me to figure out in this particular instance as I was under the impression that only the individual organization could make that claim, and not other organization or individuals belonging to the organization awarded the prize. Awaiting final confirmation from Nobel prize organization… added by: versasrev

Gaza blockade under pressure

There could be concessions from Israel on the Gaza Strip aid blockade, Channel 4 News International Editor Lindsey Hilsum reports from Ashdod, as it faces more international pressure after stopping another aid ship. The Israeli navy diverted the Rachel Corrie – the last of the so-called “freedom flotilla” containing thousands of tonnes of aid for Gaza, as well as activists from Ireland and elsewhere – without incident. The ship, named after the American woman killed in Gaza in 2003, had ignored Israeli orders to divert to Israel's Ashdod port where Israel had offered to unload the cargo and deliver it to Gaza before inspecting it. However, following the Israeli military intervention, it was escorted to Ashdod where the cargo was unloaded and the passengers were put onto buses to the airport to be deported. The Rachel Corrie continued with its mission despite Israeli forces killing nine activists on board a Turkish aid ship on Monday. Lindsey Hilsum, Channel 4 News International Editor, said that Israelis continued to support the blockade, despite the aid crisis in Gaza and international condemnation – although some alterations could be made to what kinds of items are blocked as a result of recent events, she said. “Most Israelis seem to agree with their government that the blockade of Gaza is necessary in order to weaken the Hamas government in Gaza and prevent it from getting weapons,” she said. “But international reaction is now stepping up – with the White House saying that it is unsustainable, it has to change. “But nonethless Israel seems quite determined…they think that if the blockade is lifted, there is a danger of weapons going into Gaza, that at least is what they say. “But I think now there will be new negotiations to change at least what can go in and what can't. There is an Israeli list of goods which are allowed in and which aren't. Rather bizarrely, coriander is not allowed in, ginger however is allowed in.” The humanitarian cargo on board the Rachel Corrie includes: 550,000 kilograms of bagged cement 20,000 Kgs of printing paper 25,000 kgs of school supplies and books 12,000 kgs of toys 150,000 kgs of medical supplies Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement saying: “Forces used the same procedures for Monday's flotilla and Saturday's sailing but was met by a different response. “On today's ship and in five of the six vessels in the previous flotilla, procedure ended without casualties. The only difference was with one ship where extremist Islamic activists, supporters of terrorism, waited for our troops on the deck with axes and knives.” Passengers on board the MV Rachel Corrie include: Mairead Maguire, nobel Peace Laureate and Cofunder of Peace People, Northern Ireland. Dennis Halliday, former UN Assistant Secretary General, nobel peace prize nominee, and winner of the UK Gandhi Peace Prize. Matthias Change Wen chieh, Malaysia barrister and former political secretary to former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohammed. The ship was the latest attempt to break the four-year old blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel, with the stated aim of preventing Gaza's rulers Hamas from building up weapons to attack the Jewish state. It prevents materials such as cement from entering Gaza, which it says could be used for military purposes. The latest incident comes after nine Turkish activists attempting to break the blockade were killed by Israeli military on Monday. The Guardian newspaper reported today that autopsy results showed they had been shot a total of 30 times, many at close range. Five were killed by gunshots to the head, it said. Speaking to Channel 4 News, Chris Gunness, UN Relief and Works Agency spokesman, said that the key issue was that people in Gaza were absolutely desperate for aid. “We have to get aid into Gaza. There is 80% aid dependency and 44% unemployment. Last year 100,000 people came to us because they could not feed their families, this year it was 300,000 so deep poverty has gone up three times,” he said. “There's a crisis in the health service in Gaza, there's a crisis in the education service in Gaza,” he said. “Thousands of five and six year olds can't go to UN schools today because of this illegal blockade, this collective punishment of 1.5 million people, which is why we say lift the sea blockade, lift the land blockade. We know we can do it and do it in a way which adequately accommodates Israel's legitimate security concerns.” He also said that his organisation had been working with Israeli authorities to get cement into Gaza, which showed that it could be done. “If we can do it for two months, we can do it for two years. If we can do it for a few trucks, we can do it for a few tens of thousands of trucks,” he said. International criticism has been heaped on the blockade following the incidents this week, including by Israel's ally the United States. A spokesman for the White House National Security Council said: “We are working urgently with Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and other international partners to develop new procedures for delivering more goods and assistance to Gaza. “The current arrangements are unsustainable and must be changed. For now, we call on all parties to join us in encouraging responsible decisions by all sides to avoid any unnecessary confrontations. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay increased the pressure. “International humanitarian law prohibits starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and … it is also prohibited to impose collective punishment on civilians,” she said. http://therealnews.com/t2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&a… added by: treewolf39

Slipknot’s Paul Gray Remembered By Shadows Fall, Sepultura, Nonpoint

SF singer Brian Fair recalls Gray as ‘a truly warm soul underneath the evil mask he rocked onstage.’ By Ryan J. Downey Paul Gray Photo: Getty Images Heavy-metal musicians were quick to react to the death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray , as news spread online in a manner all too familiar to a community still reeling from the recent deaths of legendary singer Ronnie James Dio and Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele . “I’m so crushed to hear about the passing of Paul Gray,” Shadows Fall singer Brian Fair told MTV News. “I had the pleasure of first getting to know him on a press trip to New York City before our tour with Slipknot and Lamb of God in 2005 and then sharing stages and good times with him and the boys around the world. “He was a great musician, an underrated songwriter and a truly warm soul underneath the evil mask he rocked onstage,” he continued. “This is a huge loss to the metal world. He will be missed deeply.” The boys in Nonpoint were on Ozzfest with Slipknot back in 2001, watching the Iowa band blow up as they relentlessly toured behind their 1999 eponymous debut. “I am deeply saddened to hear and read about the death of Paul Gray,” Nonpoint drummer Rob Rivera told MTV News. “Nonpoint had the pleasure of touring with Slipknot during the 2001 Ozzfest, and what we saw from Paul and the rest of Slipknot was a band that gave their all live and put their bodies on the line. To all in Slipknot and Paul’s family, Nonpoint send all our love, condolences and prayers out to you. You will be missed by all your friends and fans around the world. Rest In Peace my metal brother.” Gray was found dead Monday (May 24) in a suburban Iowa hotel room. The cause of death has not been reported as of press time. The band’s most recent studio album, All Hope Is Gone, was released in 2008. The album was mixed by legendary English metal producer Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Fear Factory), whose representative had this to say in a statement: “[Colin] is a true fan to the core and sends his love and condolences to everyone in Slipknot and their camp.” Another band Richardson has worked with, legendary thrashers Sepultura, took to the Internet . “RIP Paul Gray, we’re shocked and very sad,” current members Paulo Pinto Jr., Andreas Kisser, Derrick Green and Jean Dolabella said in a joint statement. “This is another tragic loss for our metal community.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below.
