Melanie Lynskey On Hello I Must Be Going, Heavenly Creatures Training, And Songs For Getting Into Character

New Zealand native Melanie Lynskey finds her way to the spotlight – at long last – playing a woman, stuck in a sadly hilarious vortex of post-divorce depression, who’s jolted out of her early mid-life ennui by an electrifying affair with a younger man ( GIRLS ’ Christopher Abbott) in Todd Luiso’s Hello I Must Be Going . It’s an extraordinary dual capacity for deeply-felt pathos and comedy that Lynskey possesses and showcases, often simultaneously, as Amy Minsky; for Lynskey, one of the most genuine actors in the game, it was the kind of role that’s come along all too infrequently in the nearly two decades since her assured debut at the age of 15 in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures . “It was kind of a dream that I would find a part that had so much for me to do, but it’s so rare,” Lynskey said over iced coffees in Los Angeles. Longtime devotees know her well from Heavenly Creatures , in which she and Kate Winslet played a pair of real-life teen murderesses, or from her supporting turns in films like Ever After , Detroit Rock City , and Coyote Ugly ; when we first met in Seattle a few months prior, a fan recognized her as Reese Witherspoon’s old classmate in Sweet Home Alabama (“Baby in a bar!”). But while she’s tasted mainstream success, the soft-spoken Lynskey, whose wicked sense of humor complements her humility (she’s truly one of the most grounded actors around, as evidenced by her Twitter musings ), seems far more at home in the creatively-fulfilling climes of independent film. Three years into her tenure as the daffy, delightful Rose on Two and a Half Men , she asked to be let out of her contract so she could make films while coming back as-needed in a recurring role. In the time since, she’s turned in some of her best, most acclaimed work in potent supporting turns like Away We Go , Up In The Air , The Informant , and Win Win . “The show was so successful and I could see a crossroads,” she explained. “It was like, this way you’ll be a millionaire and one of the people on this show, and this way you’re not going to make a lot of money but you’re going to be able to build something that’s a little more interesting.” In Hello I Must Be Going that choice paid off not just with her first starring role, it also prompted Lynskey to examine her own journey in contrast to Amy’s vulnerable emotional life. “You come home and everything looks beautiful. It gave me a real appreciation for happiness, and for my friends, for interests that I have, and the fact that I do have a life that I really love.” Below, dive in as Melanie Lynskey takes us into her work on Hello I Must Be Going , her reaction to male critics who’ve criticized Amy’s physicality, lessons learned on the set of Heavenly Creatures , her experience on – and pulling away from – Two and a Half Men , her favorite film critics, David Wain’s upcoming They Came Together , and the theme songs she uses to get into character. One of the great things about Hello I Must Be Going is that audiences get to see you front and center – they know your work, we’ve seen you do comedy and drama, but this is a vehicle that allows you to combine those talents. Were you looking for something of this more intimate scale, or these particular chords to play? It was kind of a dream that I would find a part that had so much for me to do, but it’s so rare. We made this movie for no money, but even those tiny, tiny movies – movie stars are doing them, famous people. So much of the stuff that Michelle Williams does – can you imagine doing Wendy & Lucy ? What a dream! Or Blue Valentine ? She’s so amazing. But what a great thing to get to create something like that. It seems performers do have to turn to the independent world to find projects like that. How did they find you for this film? Yeah, I think so. I just got asked – I was in Toronto and my agent was like, do you want to come do this reading for the Sundance Institute? They were doing a staged reading of it in front of a little audience. I read the script and said, “Yes – I will fly myself back!” I loved it so much. At the time I thought I’d just be doing the reading, I didn’t anticipate having a future with it. Who was at the initial staged reading? There were not a lot of the same actors. Dane DeHaan read Chris Abbott’s part, and he was wonderful. There were a lot of good actors in it. It was fun. We worked on it for a day and Todd [Luiso] directed it. It just went really great, the energy was really wonderful. After that reading they said, “We want to make it with you,” and at the time with Dane, and then they tried to get money that way – but they realized they had to ask for less and less money with me in it. [Laughs] Eventually they got some money and stuck with me and I’m so grateful. Your character is stuck in a post-divorce depression but there’s a real humorous undercurrent to her, and so much of that is expressed in your face – in your expressions, your reactions to these oblivious people around you. There’s a tone to the script where you can just tell how Amy is feeling, and it was written from her perspective. There weren’t many reaction cues in the script but Sarah [Koskoff] and are really similar, the writer and I, so that was good – we have a similar take on things and were both excited that we wanted to do the same thing with it. Chris balances the film opposite you – there’s a quality to his eyes that makes you feel you’re peering into his soul, just looking at him. That’s such a perfect way to put it. It’s so true. There’s something about him that’s open and accessible but still mysterious; he has a really interesting quality, and his performance is so spontaneous. It feels off the cuff. He’s such a great person, a sweet, sweet person. Kind and lovely – I got so lucky with him. He seems like he’s always perceiving the world around him. He is, and he’s not judging. It’s nice. There’s a nice quality to him where he’s sort of scoping people out and watching people but he’s not too cool for school, even though he’s very cool. [Laughs] It was funny when I started watching GIRLS – I was like, Oh my god, he’s playing such a goofball! It’s so different from him. Was there much time to get to know him before you started shooting? No. It was crazy, because the other actor was going to do the movie and the casting process was kind of quick after he had to drop out. I remember Todd saying to me one day, “Do you want to watch this audition tape? I keep thinking about this one person…” and when he showed me Chris’s audition tape I started crying. I cried with relief, mostly, like, “Oh thank God they have somebody good!” I was so afraid! That’s a good point – there are so many elements up in the air in the making of a movie. And the age difference between the characters – she’s 35, he’s 19 – sort of requires two performers who can meet in the middle . It was important to me that it wasn’t all about the age difference in a creepy way, and Chris has a maturity to him which I think is important. The characters are at such similar points in their lives; “Who am I, and what am I going to do with the rest of my life?” So I didn’t want it to be sketchy. They cast Chris and I was in Connecticut working with Todd and Sarah and we sort of just awkwardly met each other. He had to leave to go shoot something and they were like, “He’s cute, right? Did you like him?” It was like a weird set-up. “He’s tall!” This was a really quick shoot, which means that you get what you get while you’re there. It’s always interesting to me to just kind of go along for the ride. Sometimes you come across somebody with whom your ideas don’t mesh and it’s an unfortunate kind of clash, but that doesn’t happen very often. What I like seeing is what somebody wants. Every experience is so different, but you never know until you start. Actors often say the gratifying part of the process is the work they do on set, within scenes. Do you feel that way, and to what extent did this particular shoot do that? It’s interesting. It was somewhat of a transition period for me, even though I wasn’t aware of it at the time. It’s interesting to play a character who’s asking, “What does the rest of my life hold for me? I’ve made these choices and I sort of thought everything was going to go one way, and what would happen if it all got turned upside down?” It was interesting to put yourself in that space of having nothing and feeling nothing and just not knowing what was going to come at all. In a lot of those scenes, the toughest stuff for me in those scenes is where she’s very depressed, because it’s just so horrible to sit in that, you know? But it’s hopeful. It’s an interesting thing as a person to spend a day where you’re just letting yourself feel awful. You come home and everything looks beautiful. It gave me a real appreciation for happiness, and for my friends, and for interests that I have and the fact that I do have a life that I really love. It’s good that you are able to pull yourself from that darkness. Not everybody has that, and it seems like one of the tougher aspects of being an actor. I was kind of trained to do that on Heavenly Creatures . It was pretty crazy. They were so worried about taking this 15-year-old who’s never done a movie before and being like, “Hey, cry all day and go crazy and see you tomorrow!” They were so concerned about me losing my mind, so there was a whole process at the end of the day of getting rid of everything. The woman who played my mother was kind of my acting teacher – she was helping me with technique and stuff, and she would brush me off and brush the emotion away. It was really great, and it was a good lesson to learn. You don’t need to take it home with you, and it’s better if you don’t. You were 15 when you made that film – at what point did you realize Heavenly Creatures was the real beginning of a career, that it would launch you into the world? It’s funny, because it doesn’t feel like it did. [Laughs] There was a point when I realized it was not going to. But it was a start. I think when I got an agent in America and I was like, “Oh my god, people really saw this movie.” But the progression was so slow, there was no kind of – here are movies, and here’s other opportunities! It was just like, “Nice job.” I mean, I went to the Venice Film Festival – that was incredible, that was crazy. I had so many surreal moments. Yesterday I was at high school studying for my English exam, and today I’m having lunch with Uma Thurman and Harvey Weinstein. And Quentin Tarantino, talking and talking. It was amazing. Heavenly Creatures is a fascinating film to look at now, just to revisit this point when three careers – yours, Kate Winslet, and Peter Jackson, whose films to that point had been very different – sprang and took off. It’s so amazing. It’s absolutely no surprise to me that Peter has done what he’s done and Kate has done what she’s done. But it was kind of a crazy thing to be a high school student and do this movie with people who had such a fire in them. How did your classmates react to the film? Some people were nice. I had friends who were like, “The movie was really beautiful,” but then most people were like, “I could see your tits.” [Laughs] I was like, yep, you could. “You kissed a girl!” I did. But that was fine. It was just a little alienating.

On The Come Up: Michael Strahan’s Debut On “Live With Kelly And Michael” Sends Ratings Up 44%!!

Might cozy there guys… Michael Strahan’s “Live” Debut Boosts Ratings 44% Michael Strahan’s debut alongside Kelly Ripa on ABC’s syndicated TV program “Live With Kelly and Michael” boosted the audience by 44 percent from a year ago. Yesterday’s show with the former New York Giants football player as co-host was the most-watched daytime program in 14 of the top 15 television markets, Walt Disney Co. (DIS)’s ABC said in a e-mailed statement, citing preliminary Nielsen ratings. ABC tapped Strahan as the permanent replacement for Regis Philbin, who retired from the show in 2011. The program had relied on guest hosts for the last nine months. Strahan, who played with the Giants for 15 years culminating with a 2008 Super Bowl victory, will continue as an on-air commentator of “Fox NFL Sunday.” Produced by Disney’s WABC-TV in New York, the number of viewers who watched the program in that market more than doubled from September 2011, and was more than twice that of its nearest competitor, NBC’s “Today” show, according to the statement. Disney, based in Burbank, California, climbed 3 percent to $51.16 at 1:15 p.m. in New York trading. The stock had gained 32 percent this year through yesterday. This feels so surreal right now, like me writing my own Bieber…

This feels so surreal right now, like me writing my own Bieber Experience . My name is Trina and I’ve been a Belieber all my life. I’ve seen Justin at show tapings so many times that I can’t even keep count, but meeting him face to face was so hard to do. I found out about a year ago where  Justin’s rehearsal studios were, but I wasn’t sure if it was true or not. I waited a couple of months, which became a year of waiting . All of a sudden, I found a picture of him coming out of the studio on JustJaredJr’s page. I was the happiest girl because I finally found out where Justin was rehearsing at. It was August 15, 2012, where my friends and I decided to go and check out the place. We go and see that there are a group of girls in line. We asked them, “Are you guys here for Bieber?” and they said, “YES!” No one knows what was going through my mind on that day. We stood in line for 5 hours. While waiting in line, I decided to write a letter to Justin from all the Beliebers  with our Twitter names on it. Then all of sudden I see the Moshe park Justin’s swag van on the other side on the studio and Justin just jaywalked across the street to meet us. I was crying under my paper and I heard my best friend say, “Oh my god, Trina don’t cry. Get your act together because Justin will skip your turn.” I got my act together and within a blink of an eye, I see Justin’s right next to me. I was literally on Cloud 9, I didn’t even know what was going on. He came up to me, gave me a tight side hug . He saw me, and said “Hi” and all the words that came out of my mouth were “You are absolutely amazing.” As he was about to leave to go take pictures with other girls, I said “Justin, wait, please pinky promise me you will read this letter.” He looked me in the eyes and said “Sure, of course I will.” He brought his pinky out to mine and gave my pinky the best pinky hug ever . I don’t know what he said back because he was such in a rush. After my turn was over, my friends and I just ran up to each other and gave each other the biggest group hug ever! Even til this day, I still can’t believe I met my idol.  On August 21st, my friends and I decided to go back to the studio because our summer was almost going to be over, and we wanted to spend the end of the summer with Justin. We get there around like 3:00 and there were like a few girls. We waited for like an hour all sitting down, waiting and waiting since Justin usually comes out at late noon time. I decided to look up and then all of a sudden I see Justin with Moshe and Alfredo. The guy who worked there said, “Everyone get up, get in a straight line and this will be a fast one.” My heart was throbbing. I didn’t know what to do. He came walking up to everyone and said, “Hi everyone, how are you doing?” Justin decides to start from the back of the line, where me and my friends were standing. I just say “Hi Justin!” and he says “Did you guys all come together as a group or?” and I say “Um no” he goes “We will all just take a group picture.” My friends and I just gather up around him, and he says “Who has a phone that Moshe could use to take a picture?” Let alone did I know my camera app was open and ready to go, and I just yelled out “OMG I DO I DO!” I give my phone to Justin, and he hands it to Moshe. While we are waiting for Moshe to take the picture he goes, “Everyone smile at the camera!” and we all just smile. He decides to leave and I just grab him and I hug him so tight and he goes, “Woah there.” I’m like, “Sorry. I just had too,” and he smiles back. I was so excited. I didn’t know what to do. I saw Alfredo on the other side, and I say “ALFREDO! ALFREDO, CAN WE TAKE A PICTURE?!” he says “Yes” and he gave a thumbs up. He comes up to my group and he goes, “Oh my god, it so hot out here, I’m sweating!” and we all take the picture, and he goes “It was so nice seeing/meeting you all.” At the end of this day, Moshe decided to give us all Gatorades since we were so calm and patient! This day was the second best experience ever; I never thought that he would actually come out since he seemed so tired! I honestly cannot thank Justin and his crew for everything they’ve done for us. Even a thank you doesn’t cut it. After waiting 4 and half years of just sitting behind my phone, crying my eyes out because I always saw other girls with him. Now, my day had finally come! No one can understand how much I love Justin, nor can any words explain it. To the people who told me, I would never ever meet Justin, well look at me now! EVERYONE JUST BELIEVE AND NEVER SAY NEVER, your time will come. I promise you! -@TrinaNazarian Read more: This feels so surreal right now, like me writing my own Bieber…

August 15, 2012. The day I’m blessed enough to say I met…

August 15, 2012 . The day I’m blessed enough to say I met the person who has changed my life. My name is Melanie and it all started when my friend, Amy, and I went to Justin’s rehearsal studio for a chance to meet him. We arrived there at around 3:15 when we saw around 10 other Beliebers. Once one mom organized everything about an hour later, we were all in line waiting for Justin to come out and we stressed the fact that we had to stay calm or else he wasn’t going to meet all of us since there was around 25 of us now. Suddenly, at 4:45, we saw Selena drive into the parking lot, but we couldn’t freak out because Moshe had told everyone in past days to stay calm if we all wanted to meet Justin. So, we attempted to stay calm when we saw Selena and some of Justin’s backup dancers drive by. When all of a sudden, at 5:30, we see Justin on the other side of the street jwalking over to our side and we all really did stay in our lines but it’s obviously impossible not to freak out.   We yelled at him to be careful and he was like “I’m not gonna die, guys.” I was honestly crying, shaking, hyperventilating, and just everything seemed so unreal. While I saw him take pictures, sign autographs, and hug all the people in front of me, I looked into the van and said hi to Dan and he waved back and I also said hi to Moshe and he smiled at me when Justin was still going down the line. Then he came to me. My heart literally stopped. I was so unbelievably flustered and I was shaking sooooo much, but I managed to hug Justin and tell him I loved him and he said I love you too.  I honestly don’t know how I didn’t faint right then and there. His embrace is the most comforting thing ever. I felt so safe in his arms . Then we took our picture and he kissed me on the cheek! (I seriously don’t even know how I’m possibly typing this right now). Amy needed to take her picture, but I guess we were too slow so Justin grabbed MY phone and took a selfie with her . I told him thank you so much for everything and he smiled. After he went down the entire line, he left in the swagger van and it was all hysterics. I was literally on the floor crying and shaking. Then we saw Nick walking towards us and I tried to pull it all together and take a picture with him . I told him he was awesome, his choreography is bomb, and we were wearing matching shoes and he smiled and gave me a thumbs up. Amy and me took a picture in front of Selena’s car just because we wanted to. Everyone was freaking out and crying because we couldn’t believe this actually happened. Everything happened so fast and it just seemed so surreal. I mean I honestly cannot grasp the fact that I met the person who saved my life and gave me a reason to not give up. The person who made me believe in myself and my dreams. Justin is seriously the sweetest, most talented, beautiful, caring, flawless, perfect, gorgeous, and humble person ever. He appreciates every single one of his fans so much because we’re family . He works hard every single day for countless hours just to please us.  I still cannot believe I was blessed enough to meet Justin and trust me guys, don’t ever give up! Your time will come, I promise. I convinced myself everyday that I would never meet him and look what happened. I honestly cannot thank and appreciate Justin and the crew enough for all that they do for us. This is seriously the best day of my entire existence and I will never forget any second of it. I want to thank him from the bottom of my heart for making my ENTIRE life. I don’t think I could ever describe or explain how much I love him. – @Bieber_Invasion   Read more: August 15, 2012. Never Ending Shade: Texas Residents Say This Billboard Calls For President Obama’s Death…Do You Agree?

Take a closer look and judge for yourself… Secret Service Investigating Billboard Calling For President Obama’s Death The GOP and their supporters have really been pushing the limit lately with the anti-Obama smear tactics, but this billboard in Texas may just be the last straw. A billboard sign in Victoria, Texas had drawn an investigation by the Secret Service. The controversial sign seems harmless at a glance because it says, “Pray for Obama” and then quotes a scripture,Psalms 109:8., but it is the scripture that has caused an uproar. Psalms 109:8 reads, “Let his days be few, and let another take his office.” The man behind the sign, Milton Neitsch Jr., says that he did not think that people would notice that the sign was calling for the President’s life to end soon. He must have assumed the people of Victoria, Texas did not know the scriptures. Many people are calling the sign hateful and inappropriate and they say that it is using the holy scriptures in the wrong way. Many people are also demanding that the sign must come down. Neitsch claims that he saw an e-mail from one of his buddies that called for the President’s days to “be few” and decided to pay for it to go on a billboard on North Navarro Street in Victoria, Texas. The fact that the Secret Services is taking the time to look into this certainly all but confirms the intent of the message , but some feel that the scripture in question was included to reference President Obama’s days in office being numbered rather than his days on earth. *Sideeye.* Do you buy it? Kim Kardashian Hollywood Walk of Fame Dreams: Crushed!

Kim Kardashian made it clear in a recent interview with V : She wants to one day earn herself a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Is this in any way plausible? A chamber of commerce rep was asked that question by The Hollywood Reporter and essentially responded: No, not unless Kardashian, you know, actually accomplishes something. “Part of criteria in being honored is receiving awards such as Emmys, SAG Awards, Oscars, etc. in the category of television, live-stage performance or motion pictures,” said this person in the know. “They have to have a career in the business of acting for five years or more.” Kardashian has (unfortunately) guest-starred on How I Met Your Mother and Drop Dead Diva . She’ll even make an appearance in an upcoming Tyler Perry movie . If that’s not enough, would Kardashian’s career in front of E! cameras qualify her for a spot alongside the legends of Hollywood Boulevard? Could reality stars ever be treated in such high regard? The rep offered a simple answer: That’s “not on our radar right now.” Sorry, Kim. We hate to be the bearer of such bad, obvious news. (Editor’s Note: That’s not true. We enjoy it.)

Tom Cruise Wife Auditions Conducted By Church of Scientology Officials, Report Claims

The process of finding Tom Cruise a potential wife through the Church of Scientology was revealed in Vanity Fair’s October cover story by Maureen Orth. Shelly Miscavige, the wife of Scientology head David Miscavige, led the audition to find a suitable new Mrs. Cruise after his divorce from Nicole Kidman. Actresses who were also Scientology members were called for the audition process held under the guise of “a new training film,” according to the article. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes , who were married from 2006-2012, met at some point after this; it’s unclear if she was also screened in this fashion. It’s pretty disturbing in any case if it’s even half true. Iranian-born actress Nazanin Boniadi, a strong candidate, passed the first stage of the audition process and then underwent a month-long preparation. After a makeover and signing an NDA, she was set up with Cruise in November 2004 … quickly realizing what her “very important mission” consisted of. During their relationship, she was audited and spent 2-3 hours purging any “negative thoughts about Tom.” Things went more or less well … for a time. Cruise started to have a series of complaints about her – read the full Vanity Fair expose for an explanation of what – and the relationship soon fizzled. Boniadi, who had moved in to Cruise’s home and shared his bedroom, was asked by his people to move out of his house. He never spoke to her again. After confiding in a Scientology friend about Cruise, she was ratted out. Allegedly, she was forced to scrub toilets with a toothbrush, clean bathroom tiles with acid, and dig ditches in the middle of the night as punishments for even talking about her relationship with the M:I-Ghost Protocol star to others. After that she was sent out to sell Scentology founder L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics on street corners. Boniadi is no longer involved in Scientology. A representative for Scientology, obviously, denied the story.

Pay Yo Bills: Tommy ‘Debo’ Lister Pleads Guilty To Mortgage Fraud-Like Ponzi Scheme

Debo’s gotta pay while Wells Fargo is straight chillin’. Tommy Lister took a plea bargain after the IRS and FBI investigated into the fraudulent mortgage schemes he’d been doing. Tommy “Tiny” Lister, a character actor who has appeared in nearly 100 movies including “Jackie Brown” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” has agreed to plead guilty to a mortgage fraud scheme that cost banks $3.8 million. The 54-year-old actor entered the plea agreement Friday, the same day prosecutors charged him with conspiring from 2005 to 2007 to buy homes he could not afford and to withdraw more than $1.1 million cash in home-equity loans that were not repaid. Prosecutors accused Lister and five other people — a real estate agent, a mortgage loan officer, a bank manager, an escrow officer and an accountant — of using falsified records to help Lister unlawfully acquire four homes for $5.7 million. Lister, who lives in Chatsworth, defaulted on the loans. Banks later sold them at a loss of more than $2.6 million, the U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release. Lister was also accused of sumbitting falsified W-2 forms and a fake pay stub in his application for the home equity lines of credit. He agreed to plead guilty in federal court in Los Angeles to conspiracy to commit mortgage fraud, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. He has not yet entered a plea. We’re not saying he isn’t guilty as charged but it’s a shame that Freddie, Fannie, and all these other mofo’s can get away with thievery like this and we just bail them out. Source Images via WENN
