Metta World Peace has been very quiet over the last few weeks. Eerily quiet, in fact. Ever since he delivered the People’s Elbow to James Harden’s head during a largely meaningless Los Angeles Lakers versus OKC Thunder showdown (and got suspended for it), Peace has seemed content staying out of the limelight and waiting for his punishment to run its course. Unfortunately, that silence left folks with… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Opposing Views Discovery Date : 08/05/2012 03:59 Number of articles : 3

White Students At Cornell University Are Way Out Of Pocket, Party-goers Throw Bottles At Black Students Evoking Trayvon Martin

Party-goers At Cornell University Throw Bottles At Black Students Evoking Trayvon Martin “Come up here, Trayvon”… Allegedly taunting them with references to Trayvon Martin, a group of people on the roof of the Sigma Pi fraternity house reportedly threw bottles and other objects at black students who were walking by the house early Sunday morning, according to several accounts. Sigma Pi President Zach Smith ’13 said in an email Sunday afternoon that the fraternity has “figured out who the perpetrator was, and will turn his name over to police.” The individual identified was not a brother of the fraternity, he said. Cornell Chief of Police Kathy Zoner confirmed that people were “reportedly making racial references” and throwing bottles from the roof of Sigma Pi. She added that she could not disclose more information because the investigation, which is being led by Ithaca Police, is ongoing. Beverly Fonkwo ’14 said she was walking home with a friend when, unprovoked, the group on the fraternity roof began throwing objects that landed near a group walking behind them. When the people walking behind Fonkwo asked them to stop, the people on top of the fraternity continued to throw objects — including a Jack Daniels that landed near the group behind and an unopened beer can that landed near Fonkwo and her friend — she said. When they asked them to stop again, the group responded, “‘Come up here, Trayvon,’ and started making all these other racial comments,” Fonkwo said. A black teenager from Florida, Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in February — a death that was widely perceived as unprovoked and galvanized African American activists across the country. “I feel like it was targeted and racially motivated … we felt very threatened,” Fonkwo said of the incident Sunday. Meanwhile, the assailants “were just laughing at the whole situation until we called the police and then they ran inside,” she said. That may be of little consolation to Sade Samakinwa ’14, who said she saw her friends outside the house “pretty shook up” after the incident. “I think the most shocking thing was not that bottles were being thrown but that they were shouting Trayvon,” Samakinwa said. “To use that boy’s name so disrespectfully while disrespecting someone is absolutely insane.” Wow, so that’s how they really feel. Random Ridiculousness: Facebook “Oversharing” Is As Satisfying As Sex For Some People

Facebook-aholics, do you agree with this one?? From bad breakups to bathroom updates to the amount of bacon your best friend can eat in a single sitting, we’ve all grown used to oversharers spilling their guts both online and off. “I share pretty much everything,” says Laura Keesee, a 25-year-old public relations account coordinator from Orlando, Fla. “From my random ADD thoughts to when some food has upset my stomach to details about my relationship. I think oversharing is part of my personality.” It’s also intrinsically rewarding, according to new research out of Harvard University that used fMRI scans to show how our brains react to sharing information about ourselves with others. “The Internet has drastically expanded the number of mediums through which we can talk about ourselves to other people,” says Diana Tamir, a graduate student in the Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Lab at Harvard and lead author of a study published today in the journal PNAS. “We were interested in why people engage in self-disclosure so seemingly excessively. The hypothesis we wanted to test was whether or not this behavior provided people with intrinsic or subjective value — did it feel good to do it.” As it turns out, it feels so good, our brains responds to self-disclosure the same way they respond to pleasure triggers like food, money or sex. Tamir and her colleagues conducted five studies involving nearly 300 people, most of them from the Harvard and Cambridge community. In some studies, participants were asked to disclose their own opinions while being scanned using fMRI, or functional magnetic resonance imaging, a technique that directly measures the blood flow in the brain, thereby providing information on brain activity. In others, participants were asked to complete certain behavioral tasks in exchange for varying amounts of money. Study subjects, as it turns out, were willing to go without 17 to 25 percent of their potential earnings if they could reveal info about themselves to others. “We called this the ‘penny for your thoughts study,’” says Tamir. “We wanted to know if people would pay money to engage in this behavior — to share information about themselves with other people — and it turns out they will.” Brain scans of participants revealed even more about the rewards of self-disclosure. Lawrence Winnerman, a 42-year-old project manager from Seattle, says he definitely finds oversharing rewarding. “If I post something on Facebook or say something that I think is going to be really funny and also particularly revealing about myself, I’m looking for a reaction and a laugh,” he says. “And I get really disappointed if I don’t get one. I know I’m absolutely doing it for the value of the rewards.” Damn, even 42-year-old project managers get a tingly sensation when people “Like” and interact with their FB updates. SMH. Thoughts?? Class Warfare: Are The Camel’s Brooklyn Nets Pushing The Poor Black BK Residents Out Of Their Own Hood To Make Room For Ballin’ White Folks??

Is Hovi Hov REALLY looking out for the best interest of the people in his beloved borough??? The Nets Move From New Jersey To Brooklyn Could Negatively Affect Poorer Residents Hip city neighborhoods attracting young affluent new residents are also home to a more troubling trend – increasing child poverty. East Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant scored high on the Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York’s new ranking of the Big Apple’s poorest communities. “Pockets of extreme poverty persist in the city, even in neighborhoods that are often thought to be improving economically,” said CCC executive director Jennifer March-Joly. Along strips like Bedford Ave. in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Lexington Ave. in East Harlem, wine bars, restaurants and chic boutiques have sprung up in recent years. But it isn’t all good in these hoods. Since the recession began in 2008, the numbers of children living in poverty in East Harlem jumped from 31.6 percent to 44.2 percent in 2010. In Bedford Stuyvestant, where the white population jumped 600% since 2000, the number of kids living in poverty increased from 39.6 percent in 2008 to 47 percent. Median income for both neighborhoods was also surpringly low : Families with children under 18 in both East Harlem and Bedford Stuyvesant earned about $28,000 in 2010 – compared to the citywide average of about $61,000. “You have young whites moving in,and minorities moving out. What is left behind are people who can’t afford to move out,” said CUNY graduate center sociologist Richard Alba. The re-development of neighborhoods usually comes with a spike in the price of goods and services of surrounding businesses. Do or Dine, a Michelin rated foodie hotspot on Bedford Avenue boasts meals like $20 “Chicken and Woffals,” a Cornish game hen on top of sour cream waffles. “Everyone wants to eat good food,” said owner Justin Warner, 28, acknowledging many of his neighbors can’t afford the menu. That includes single parent Eliana Luciano, 29, who lives across the street from Do or Dine and is about to lose her $1,070 one-bedroom apartment she shares with her daughter Katherine, 6 and elderly mom. “I can’t afford my rent,” said Luciano who makes $7.60 an hour working at CVS. “It’s hard. You can’t find a decent job.” Richard Toxe, a father of four who works as a nursing assistant, lives in Metro Plaza Houses on First Avenue in East Harlem, sandwiched between two new pricy luxury buildings with amenities like a shuttle bus and a white-gloved doorman. “These buildings affected everything,” said Toxe complaining he has to travel uptown to buy milk and meat because his local Associated supermarket raised its prices. We know that Jay wants to bring prosperity back to BK, but at what cost? Should he have reconsidered this particular business venture? Source

Tibetan Freedom Concert Part Of Adam Yauch’s Legacy

‘It’s given some meaning to me to be famous … if I can use that attention to help other people,’ late Beastie Boy tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch in 2000 Photo: Mick Hutson/ Getty Images The news of Adam Yauch’s untimely death on Friday continues to reverberate throughout the world and especially the music industry. From the multitude of reactions and expressions of sympathy from celebrities to the emotionally charged words from fans , Yauch’s death has many in mourning. MTV News took to the airwaves to express our appreciation for the influential artist with the one-hour special “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy,” during which we reflected on the legendary MC’s career and the indelible mark he made on music as a whole, as well as on society. One of the more poignant aspects of the 60-minute tribute was a look back at Yauch’s involvement in founding the Tibetan Freedom Concert, the first of which drew influential acts like the Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine and raised $800,000 to help support Tibetan social-justice causes. MTV News once spoke to Yauch about why he chose to get involved in promoting awareness for social issues. “Whatever involvement I’m able to put in it, it definitely makes me feel good to be able to help with that,” Yauch said about the Tibetan Freedom Concert. “It’s really everyone working together. It’s all the artists who put in their time and all the people who come down to the show that actually care about it, people involved in putting it on. “One thing Buddhism teaches is the only thing that brings us lasting happiness, that really makes us happy, is when we do things to benefit other people,” he explained. “Trying to make money, buy cool sneakers, those things don’t lead to any lasting happiness.” Yauch said what made him happiest was being able to use his fame in a positive way. “When you do things to benefit people from a pure place in your heart, that’s a feeling that lasts no matter what happens,” he said. “It’s given some meaning to me to be famous and be able to make music if I can use that attention to help other people — that gives some meaning to that.” Share your memories of Adam on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPMCA. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’: Experts Cast Christian Grey

Robert Pattinson, Ian Somerhalder, Ryan Gosling are fan favorites to play the dark and mysterious character in E L James’ novel. By Christina Garibaldi Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News People just can’t stop talking about “Fifty Shades of Grey.” E L James has set the literary world on fire with as erotic novel that explores the relationship between a dark and mysterious guy named Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, an innocent college graduate. The guilty-pleasure book features characters that James created in her “Twilight” fan fiction, and it’s now being made into a feature film . That, of course, has had Hollywood buzzing with casting rumors about who could play the role of Christian Grey. Fans of the trilogy already have strong opinions about the part, so MTV News caught up with some experts for their take. “Christian definitely needs to be clean-cut, but extremely sexy when disheveled,” Alison Genet of Twifans.com told MTV News. “I wouldn’t choose a man that is overly chiseled. No juicehead gorillas need apply. Hair that can be neatly brushed, but when playing, it’s loose and wild like Johnny Depp hair. Not super short.” Of course, the physical look of the actor has to fit, but Christian is also a complex individual, and most fans want an actor who can pull off all his many dimensions. “I just think that the actor needs to be able to portray being so intense,” Mags Vazquez from , “But also showing that vulnerability that he has in reality.” Casting rumors for the part of Christian have been heating up as of late, with names like “Twilight’s” own Robert Pattinson coming up. So, do fans want to see Pattinson make the transition from Edward Cullen to Christian Grey? “There’s the side that first fell in love with the characters as part of ‘Twilight’ fan fiction and can only see Robert Pattinson as Christian and/or Kristen Stewart as Ana,” Lisa Parker from FiftyShadesFilm.com explained. “Would we be disappointed if he/she/they were cast? Absolutely not.” Others disagree, however. “In regards to Robert Pattinson, I would like to see them move away from ‘Twilight’ so it can get its own identity,” Crissy Maier of Laters, Baby! said. Well, if Pattinson doesn’t land the role, there’s a chance another vampire could step in: “Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder. “I think Ian seems like a good fit visually, I haven’t watched ‘Vampire Diaries,’ but what I hear about his acting skills there, I’m hearing good things,” Maier said. Parker agreed, revealing that her readers have been backing Somerhalder since he expressed interest in the role during an interview with Ryan Seacrest. “We’re excited to see actors step up and say they would be interested in playing the leading man,” Parker said, adding, “With Ian Somerhalder being the first and a popular candidate judging from our Twitter timeline.” These super fans have suggestions of their own though, ranging from Matt Bomer to “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill . Not surprisingly, Ryan Gosling is also a favorite. “We are fans of the love story too, so we know exactly what qualities ‘FSOG’ fans see in different actors and actresses that make them appealing for the roles,” Parker said. “Have you seen the Dunhill London ads featuring Henry Cavill? Do they not scream ‘Fifty’? Have you seen Ryan Gosling’s GQ photo shoot? Grey silk tie anyone?” Genet of Twifanscom agreed, saying Gosling’s undeniable charm could make him the perfect Christian Grey: “Ryan Gosling, Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Gosling. Imaging him in jeans hung low on the hip.” “The one thing we know for sure is that with E L James as a collaborative partner in the casting process, we are confident that she will do what’s in the best interest of her famously loved characters.” Parker said. Who do you think should play Christian Grey in the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie? Let us know in the comments!
