‘Hunger Games’ Brought Elizabeth Banks To Tears

‘It’s the greatest movie of all time,’ actress declares to MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Elizabeth Banks at the “Hunger Games” premiere Photo: Getty Images As an enormous fan of “The Hunger Games,” Elizabeth Banks got to live out any book lover’s dream by starring in the film adaptation. The end result, in Banks’ objective opinion, was nothing short of the best movie ever. “Totally unbiased, as if I was just off the street: It’s the greatest movie of all time,” she declared. “It’s really good.” Banks spoke with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz about her emotional experience making the film and the real-life inspiration for her portrayal of Effie Trinket. Spoilers ahead. After seeing the completed film, one of the scenes that stuck out for Banks was Rue’s funeral, shortly after she’s killed in the Games. “I always knew that Rue’s funeral would be amazing. I mean, it’s one of my favorite parts of the book,” Banks said. “I think everybody loves the relationship between Katniss and Rue, and her funeral is exactly how I imagined it, just really beautiful. That she sings to her is amazing, and it’s so emotional. It’s a five-hanky moment. There’s some serious bawling happening by dudes in the theater.” Being a part of the actual filming of the story didn’t make watching the final product any less emotional for Banks. Even she couldn’t help but shed a few tears. “When watching it, I totally cried. I cried making the movie, seriously,” Banks said. “When we were shooting the Reaping, and the very first time Jennifer [Lawrence] came out and said, ‘I volunteer. I volunteer.’ I think it was rehearsal; we weren’t even shooting yet. I was like, ‘That’s the most amazing thing.’ ” As with all adaptations of books, not everything can be as the reader imagines. But Banks said that made “The Hunger Games” even better. “There were a couple things that weren’t how I pictured it, but I’m not even sure that I pictured Effie’s hair the way Effie’s hair ultimately ended up being, but I love everything,” she said. “It was better than what I thought. That’s what I loved about it. There were a lot of things that were a lot cooler than I thought they’d be.” To bring Effie to life, Banks worked closely with crew to create a truly unique villainess. As it turns out, the secrets to Effie’s origins lie in Hollywood history. “I had amazing collaborators, first of all, Gary Ross. Gary said, in his mind’s eye, he always imagined Effie’s face was like Joel Grey in ‘Cabaret.’ If you remember, he had really white skin, cracked and messed up, just kind of grotesque,” Banks explained. “Because Effie’s a villain, we really wanted her to be a little villainous in that way, so that was our jumping-off point.” Similarly, Banks owed the inspiration for Effie’s theatrical voice to one of the screen’s most iconic leading ladies. “[The voice] was very much inspired by Rosalind Russell ‘s ‘Auntie Mame.’ I really felt like Effie is everyone’s ‘Auntie Mame,’ just an outrageous person who says all of the wrong things and has all these crazy friends and lives a very extravagant lifestyle that’s beyond her,” Banks said. “She’s one of my favorite performers, and it’s one of my favorite performances. She just has that great New York Broadway accent in the film, so that was my jumping-off point for Effie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Katy Perry ‘Sore And Exhausted’ After ‘Part Of Me’ Video

‘I know how to carry my weight a little bit more,’ she says of military training for the just-premiered clip. By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: MTV News One of the many reasons to admire Katy Perry is for how honest she is with her fans in revealing how she struggles with the same mundane annoyances in life that we all do, like watching what we eat and exercising. During MTV First: Katy Perry” on Tuesday, when Perry premiered her new “Part of Me” video , the pop star revealed that during the holidays, she gives herself a free pass and goes into full-on “Stay Puft Marshmallow mode.” So she had some preparation to do before shooting the combat-heavy clip, going on a strict diet and exercise program. “I got on a meal plan. I’m still on that meal plan, although I cheat a little bit — I have to live!” she admitted. “I got a fantastic person to work me out and get me into really good shape.” Perry said she performed a lot of the stunts in the video, including learning how to flip and carry people. “On the actual base, I did a lot of things. I flipped girls, I learned how to fireman-carry,” she said of the maneuver used to rescue wounded or unconscious victims of fires or other accidents. “I know how to carry my weight a little bit more,” she said, before admitting there was one task she wasn’t able to master. “One thing I can’t do, and I hope that there are other people out there that feel the same way, is climb a rope,” she said. “Oh my gosh, it’s so hard to climb rope! It’s all about grip and arms. I tried five or six times on set, but I had to cheat that shot. My hands were shaking.” Though the production of “Part of Me” was a lot of hard work — actual blood, sweat and tears — Perry talked at length about how much she learned from the Marines she worked with. “This music video, as much as I was sore and exhausted, I was so educated on people in the service who I’ve always respected, but this time the respect goes beyond and above anything I could’ve imagined,” she said. “The stuff that they go through, the loyalties and strengths that they all possess, it seems like they are seriously, not to sound weird, but it’s seriously the heart of America.” Stick with MTV News as we roll out more exclusive news from our “MTV First: Katy Perry” interview! Jonathan Cheban on Jon Hamm: What an Unpopular Mad Man!

Just when it seemed like the world’s most unexpected feud was dying down, Jonathan Cheban has stepped in to voice his take on Kim Kardashian’s war of words with Jon Hamm. How does the random reality star and hanger-on feel about the Mad Men actor dissing his BFF as an example of stupidity in our culture ? Words We Never Thought We’d Write: Are you on Team Cheban or Team Hamm? “I think Jon Hamm needs to just shut up and stop being such a mad man!” Cheban said at an Ocean Drive party last night. “He needs to mind his own business, because Kim works hard. They do different things – it’s a whole different world.” Cheban added – and we’re not making this up – that Kim Kardashian is both more popular than Jon Hamm and will be relevant for longer than the Emmy winner. “Put Jon Hamm in a mall, and more people will go up to the people working at the Burger King than they will to him. Bring Kim to a mall and there will be a riot. They’re in two different businesses. Kim’s pop culture and what people like. “It’s a lot of work, and she’s here to stay. Let’s see where he is after Mad Men .” Kardashian, for her part, has mostly taken the high road in this unexpected rivalry. She’s too busy posing topless on Twitter to really respond. Mitt Romney Wins Decisive Victory In Illinois Primary

Romney beat Rick Santorum by double digits in Tuesday’s primary. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney at his Illinois primary night party Photo: AFP Mitt Romney strung together two solid victories in a row on Tuesday night when he pulled off a decisive win in the Illinois presidential primary, the latest in a series of “must-win” contests in the GOP race to the White House. The former Massachusetts Governor is likely to pull in at least 41 of the 54 delegates at stake following his win over rival Rick Santorum, who he beat by a 47 to 35 percent margin. The other two candidates in the race, Texas congressman Ron Paul and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich hardly campaigned in the state and came in a distant third and fourth, with, respectively, 9 and 8 percent of the vote. “We thank the people of Illinois for this extraordinary victory,” Romney said to supporters gathered in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, according to CNN. “Elections are about choices. Today, hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois joined millions of people in this country in this cause.” If he gets 41 delegates, Romney’s total to date is 562, which puts him halfway toward the goal of 1,144 needed to clinch the GOP nomination. Once again, he turned his attention away from his fellow candidates an onto President Obama in his victory speech, saying, “It’s time to say this word: enough. We’ve had enough … We know our future’s brighter than these troubled times. We still believe in America, and we deserve a president who believes in us, and I believe in the American people.” Romney was feeling bullish after his huge victory in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico on Saturday, where he took more than 83 percent of the vote and likely all 20 delegates. Pundits said he needed a solid victory in Obama’s former home state in order to tamp down the growing buzz about the potential for a contested GOP convention in August should he fail to get enough delegates to close the deal before then. Though he had a rough week — which included gaffes in P.R. in which he said the nation needs to adopt English as its official language to gain statehood and a remark on Monday in which he claimed the unemployment rate “doesn’t matter to me” — Santorum was still defiant after his Illinois loss. “This is an election about fundamental and foundational things,” the former Pennsylvania Senator said during a gathering in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. “This is an election about not who’s the best person to manage Washington or manage the economy. We don’t need a manager, we need someone who’s going to pull government up by the roots and do something to liberate the private sector in America.” The race now moves on to Louisiana on Saturday, where, once again, Romney will attempt to prove that he can appeal to the party’s conservative base and that he can win in the South. Nicki Minaj Continues Newsstand Domination With Complex Cover

MC relives her killer year and her ‘quest to stand alone’ in magazine’s 10th anniversary issue. By Nadeska Alexis Nicki Minaj on the cover of Complex Photo: Complex If there was ever any doubt that Nicki Minaj would continue her impressive career sprint in 2012, look no further than the newsstand nearest to you. The Young Money rapper has already covered Paper, New York, Vibe and Allure in the first three months of the year (and she got a feature in Vogue too). And now, she’s on the cover of Complex . Complex unveiled their feature with Minaj on Tuesday (after rolling out Justin Bieber’s story from their April/May double cover on Monday). As to be expected, the 29-year-old rapper is done up in eye-catching colors, sporting a white wig with shades of purple, white and pink lipstick and some added graphics just to push it over the top. The feature backtracks on her astronomical year, which included a Super Bowl performance, a Grammys performance , an OPI nail polish line and a MAC cosmetics deal and looks forward to a coming year that will include a fragrance line, a fashion line and a world tour. “If I wasn’t doing it, I wouldn’t believe it’s possible,” Minaj told the magazine about her success. “I happen to be a pessimist, and maybe that’s a good thing because I don’t stop to smell the roses — which is not a good personal thing. I don’t stop and enjoy those moments. I’m just [snaps fingers] on to the next. Always on to the next and never in the moment.” Despite her catalog of achievements, the Queens rapper says that she’s laser-focused on achieving that much more, especially with her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which is due out on April 3. “Doing the Super Bowl with Madonna doesn’t really change Nicki Minaj’s personal goals,” she says. “My goal right now is still to put out Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, sell 5 million copies eventually, and tour every country in the world.” “I came out with Young Money, the biggest hip-hop label in the world at that time. And then it was, ‘How do I branch away from Lil Wayne?’ ” she continues. “One of my biggest records was with Drake, ‘Moment 4 Life.’ Even with the Super Bowl, it’s Madonna’s moment. I’m just sharing in that moment. It’s not Nicki Minaj’s moment. Nicki Minaj at the Grammys — that’s my moment. I’ve just been constantly on this quest to stand alone.” After dropping Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Nicki will set out on a 15-date European tour , which will kick off in early June. Tyga Associate Honey Cocaine Shot After Nebraska Concert

Toronto MC suffered minor wounds when a van she was traveling in took on gunfire after a show in downtown Omaha. By Rob Markman Honey Cocaine Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic Tyga ‘s careless world was hit with quite a bit of drama on Monday night following a concert in Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha police confirmed with MTV News that two members of Tyga’s entourage were shot and suffered minor wounds when a van that the Young Money rapper was traveling in took on gunfire after his show at the Sokol Auditorium in downtown. Tyga’s artist Honey Cocaine, real name Sochitla Sal, took to Twitter early Tuesday morning (March 20) and confirmed that she was one of the people shot. “Got shot and I’m not dead. #LoveLifeAndGod,” she wrote . The police report confirms that Honey was struck in the arm and was transported to Creighton University Medical Center. The second victim, Derrick Lowe, was grazed in his hip and refused treatment at the scene. The confrontation began while Tyga was onstage getting set to perform his hit single “Rack City,” the last song from his set. A group of concertgoers began to throw things onstage, which seemed to infuriate the rapper. Footage of the incident made its way to YouTube shortly after. In the clip, an enraged Tyga begins shouting, “Who threw it?” before urging the culprit to see him outside after the show. The police report cites a disturbance at the concert hall and states that Tyga and company were followed by a black four-door sedan as they left the scene in their van. Police observed several bullet holes in the victim’s vehicle, but no one was seriously injured. The investigation is ongoing, police say. On February 29, Honey Cocaine joined Tyga when he appeared on ” RapFix Live ” and spit a verse for the camera. The Toronto MC also sat and chopped it up with Sway about her plans for the future with Tyga. “Me, I’m building,” she said. “We’re building together, but we both do our own thing.” Related Artists Tyga

Nas Makes ‘History’ With Heavy D-Produced ‘The Don’

‘When Salaam played me the beat for it, I said, ‘That’s the single,’ ‘ Nas tells MTV News of Life Is Good track. By Nadeska Alexis Nas Photo: MTV News Nas is gearing up to release his 10th studio album, Life Is Good, this summer, and the Queens MC gave fans a first taste of the anticipated LP last week with the premiere of his new single, “The Don.” The track features production from Salaam Remi, Da Internz and the late Heavy D, who died suddenly in November. Before taking the stage at South by Southwest this past weekend, Nas acknowledged the significance of having Heav’s touch on his new single. “When Salaam played me the beat for it, I said, ‘That’s the single — do this and do that and we’re golden.’ So he started flipping it around,” Nas said of the first time he heard the instrumentals. “When we heard that Heavy D died, of course we were messed up, and Salaam called me and told me, ‘You know your record “The Don”? You know who gave me that, right?’ “He’s like, ‘Heavy D gave me that. He liked what we did with the other single, “Nasty,” and he sent me this record.’ And the rest is history,” Nas continued. “So rest in peace, Heavy D.” Life Is Good will be Nas’ first solo album since 2008’s Untitled, and the LP is slated to arrive by late May or early June. “It’s a summer album,” Nas told MTV News. “We’re gonna shoot the video for ‘The Don’ and get ready for the next song that’s in the chamber. It ain’t gon’ stop. It’s a whole story. ‘[The] Don’ just dropped, so we’re just letting that bubble and setting up the next one.” Before Nas rolls out Life Is Good, fans can catch him on the song “Champion,” which appears on Nicki Minaj’s upcoming sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. “Nicki hit us up, I got love, so it was nothin’ — I did the record,” he said of his work on the track. Machine Gun Kelly Fought ‘Wild Boy’ Initially

‘Maybe I should just hate every song I’m about to release,’ MGK tells MTV News about his Half Naked & Almost Famous single. By Rob Markman Machine Gun Kelly Photo: Jerod Harris/ WireImage Machine Gun Kelly relishes the underdog role, but the Cleveland, Ohio, rapper racked up another serious win on Tuesday (March 20) when he dropped his Half Naked & Almost Famous EP on Bad Boy Records. The five-song digital release marks MGK’s first major-label release and serves as a warm-up for his official debut LP. Tracks like the riot-starting “Warning Shot” and the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-produced and soul-bearing “See My Tears” help balance out the quick fix, but the EP’s anchor is its first single, “Wild Boy.” Initially MGK was skeptical about leading his charge with the Waka Flocka-assisted track, but Diddy talked him into it. “He was the one who encouraged ‘Wild Boy,’ he encouraged the whole thing. I was like, ‘Nah, no way, we gotta go serious with the serious stuff right now,'” MGK told MTV News during a January sit-down. “If we would’ve went that route, I would’ve fizzled off real quick” Kells was down on the Spiff TV-directed video as well after a miscommunication between Waka and his mom/manager Deb Antney almost halted production. “We had all these initial plans, but none of them fell through,” he said. “It was almost a wrap on it because Waka’s mom didn’t tell him that he had a video shoot today. So I was like, ‘Come on, hurry up,’… He was like ‘Video shoot? What are you talkin’ about?’ ” Waka eventually made it to the shoot and in the end everything worked out. Now, MGK understands the value of strong lead single. “I accept it. I totally accept it. I accept what it does for the people in the crowd and I accept what it did for my recognition.” In fact, thanks to “Wild Boy” and the tons of touring MGK does, the MC was able to gain enough support to be able to release Half Naked & Almost Famous and its accompanying documentary. “Maybe I should just hate every song I’m about to release,” he joked. Twilight vs. The Hunger Games: Which Series Will Come Out On Top?

With Lionsgate’s big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ teen-centric sci-fi survival-adventure The Hunger Games hitting screens this week, it’s kind of impossible not to draw comparisons to that other YA juggernaut series, which concludes its billion-dollar run on pop culture this fall. So how does The Hunger Games measure up to Twilight ? Some spoilers follow. THE BOOKS Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight , first published in 2005, spawned a total of four books (and one spin-off novella) that were adapted into five movies ( Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits screens this November), with over 116 million copies in print. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games , first published in 2008, spawned a total of three books set to be adapted into four movies, with over 26 million copies in print. Advantage: Twilight THE HEROINE Twilight : Bella Swan is a 17-year-old girl who moves to gloomy Forks, Washington and falls in love with a vampire. Unassuming and average, she finds her inner strength after four novels’ worth of being imperiled by embracing her destiny and starting a family. Hunger Games : Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl who lives in gloomy District 12 in the fascist future world of Panem and must fight for her life in a televised battle royale. A skilled huntress, she finds her inner heroine after three novels’ worth of being a pawn in the Capitol’s games by embracing her destiny and becoming a symbol of the resistance. Advantage: Hunger Games SUPER POWERS (AND SUPER WEAKNESSES) Twilight : Left at the mercies of other people’s protection, Bella’s the lame duck for most of the saga, until she discovers that her secret power is, literally, the ability to protect her loved ones. Seriously. Meanwhile, her love for Edward keeps threatening to ruin everything – prom, her sex life, the future of all vampirekind. Hunger Games : Empowered at an early age thanks to her father’s untimely death, Katniss is the provider in her family for most of her life, until she enters the Games and discovers that compassion for others, and the newfound ability to trust in Peeta, is the key to survival. Her only weakness, it could be said, is that her personal drive to survive is so strong she has trouble seeing the big picture, and her place in it. Advantage: Hunger Games THE LOVE TRIANGLE Twilight : Bella must choose between two suitors – Edward Cullen, the sparkly vampire, and Jacob Black, her werewolf BFF. Heated tent scenes, make-out sessions, and torrid glances ensue. Hunger Games : Katniss must choose between two suitors – Peeta, the golden baker’s son (and her fellow Tribute in the Hunger Games), and Gale, her earthy BFF. Play-acted cave scenes, tender kisses, and internal struggles ensue – that is, when Katniss isn’t busy, you know, fighting for her life. Advantage: Twilight THE THEMES Twilight : Love, lust, abstinence, teen pregnancy, motherhood, sexuality vs. sin. Hunger Games : Fighting injustice, taking a stand, trusting others, personal responsibility. Advantage: Hunger Games. THE ONSCREEN PG-13 ACTION Twilight : Speed-ramped vampire running, bad wirework, CG werewolf-vampire melees, non-gory limb-shattering/ripping/beheadings, and one vivid, suggestive C-section by vampire scene. Hunger Games : Training exercises, arrow-shooting, hand-to-hand combat, bladed weapons, Tracker Jacker (i.e. hallucination-inducing poison bee) attacks, and one vivid, suggestive shaky-cam Cornucopia melee. Advantage: Hunger Games FILM PEDIGREE Twilight : Installments directed by Catherine Hardwicke ( Twilight ), Chris Weitz ( New Moon ), David Slade ( Eclipse ), and Oscar-winner Bill Condon ( Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2 ). Top Rotten Tomatoes score: Eclipse , at 49%. Hunger Games : The Hunger Games directed by Oscar-nominee Gary Ross, who is set to direct the next sequel, Catching Fire . Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 100% (with 17 reviews in). Advantage: Hunger Games — Seems like The Hunger Games has the edge over Twilight by most of the above criteria, stemming from its more complex and stirring lead character, story, and themes. That said, Twilight fandom outpaces Hunger Games fandom by the millions, circulation-wise. Will solid critical reviews and stellar pre-release ticket sales help bump The Hunger Games to Twilight -level box office returns — and convince non-fans to give it a shot? Sound off below, Movieliners!

‘American Idol’ Castoff Shannon Magrane Doesn’t Regret Tackling Mariah Carey

Eliminated 16-year-old tells MTV News that Carey’s power ballad ‘One Sweet Day’ has sentimental value. By Christina Garibaldi Shannon Magrane Photo: MTV News Although Shannon Magrane was sent packing on last week’s episode of “American Idol,” the 16-year-old Tampa, Florida, native has no hard feelings about her early elimination. On Monday (March 19), Magrane stopped by the MTV Newsroom and reflected on her fun, if brief time on the “Idol” stage. “It’s hard, you never know what America is thinking,” Magrane admitted. “It’s crazy, but I loved it. It was a great learning experience for me. I loved every minute of it.” During her final performance, Magrane took on Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” which received relatively positive remarks from the judges. But in the end, that wasn’t enough to save her from elimination. And while “Idol” judges usually advise contestants to stay away from Carey’s power ballads, Magrane has no regrets about her song choice. “I was happy I sang that song,” Magrane said. “What not a lot of people know about that was that I chose that song because it was a song that me and my Papa sang together,” she added of the tribute to her grandfather. “And [I] sang it because before he passed away, that was our favorite song that he would always sing to me. I just felt emotionally connected to that song.” Magrane wasn’t the only contestant eliminated on “American Idol” last week. Jermaine Jones made a surprising exit after producers claimed he misled them about his history of arrests. The news was a shock to viewers but also to the contestants. “That was definitely one of the biggest shockers on ‘Idol’ that I’ve ever seen so far, and I’ve been watching it since I was a little girl. That was a big shocker,” Magrane said. “We all found out when America found out, we were all so shocked … we were so sad because he was one of the people that were the funniest people in our group. He was always making people feel happy and laugh all the time.” Magrane’s 11th-place elimination means she’ll miss out on the singing show’s summer tour but she told us she plans to attend. For now, the teen just has her sights set on making her mark in the music industry — and finishing high school. “I still have to go to school; I still have school work to do. But on top of that, I’m still going to be working on my dream,” Magrane said. “I really want to be a triple threat. I want to be like Beyonc
