But for those who’ve covered her career from the beginning, well, let’s just say this is basically par for the course. Because ever since M.I.A. first broke through in 2004, she’s courted controversy, first for her outspoken support of the Tamil Tigers , the Sri Lankan separatist organization that engaged in acts of terror and has been linked to the assassination of Sri Lankan and Indian leaders. That support and her overtly political lyrics led to her being denied a travel visa by the U.S. government and earned her a spot on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s risk list in 2006. So, really, a middle finger is no big thing. And over the past few years, she hasn’t exactly mellowed. In 2010, she raised eyebrows with the graphic video for “Born Free,” a clip that saw security forces (with American flags prominently displayed) round up red-headed citizens and summarily execute them in brutal fashion. It was a savage bit of socio-political commentary, though most missed that message entirely, focusing instead on the blood and guts, which earned the video a measure of YouTube ignominy and had < href=" http://"www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/27/mia.music.video/index.html?iref=allsearch" target="_blank"> critics howling . Her outspoken ways also drew the ire of both Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber fans, after she called Gaga “a good mimic” and said the content of “Born Free” was no less offensive than anything Bieber had churned out. And then, she launched a lengthy (and much-covered) offensive against New York Times writer Lynn Hirschberg, posting her phone number on Twitter and releasing a diss song called “I’m a Singer” after reading what she believed to be an unflattering feature in the Times . Though Hirschberg remained largely silent on the matter, the Times did eventually admit that a pair of M.I.A.’s quotes were rearranged in the piece. Finally, earlier this month, she unveiled the video for “Bad Girls,” which re-teamed her with “Born Free” director Romain Gavras and is loaded with socially (and politically) charged imagery, like women cloaked in burqas doing stunts in expensive cars as men in keffiyeh look on, smoldering oil fields and assault rifles. My name is Michelle and my best friend is Amanda. We live in South Florida and on February 5, 2012, the luckiest moment of our lives happened . It started out that Justin Bieber was in Miami at the recording studio working on his new album “Believe”. I had heard about it and wanted to go so badly to go meet him! On Thursday, after begging my mom, she didn’t want to take me because it wasn’t in the very best neighborhood. Friday, same thing. I cried so much! But then Saturday came. My daddy’s girlfriend looked at me and goes, “Is Justin gonna be here tonight?” My eyes went HUGE and I go, “YES! WHY?!” She told me, “Tonight. We’re going.” I SCREAMED AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS THAT THE WHOLE STREET COULD PROBABLY HEAR ME. I couldn’t get my hopes up too much cause what if Justin didn’t come out of the studio cause he was too busy? On the way there, all that was going through our minds was, “Is this REALLY the day we meet Justin?!” There were at least 35 other girls when we got there at 9:00 pm. We were all standing on the other side of the street. The owner of the studio talked to us about how we can’t get too excited and destroy his plants outside, and not to scream at every car cause they’re not all Justin! But all of a sudden, we see a black car and Moshe was driving! WE ALL KNEW JUSTIN WAS IN THAT CAR! We ran up against the gate and pressed our faces through the bars! Unfortunately, Justin crawled out so we didn’t even see him at all! 1 hour later, still no Justin. But by this time, there were at least 400 Beliebers there. Timbaland came out and signed autographs, we saw Lil Twist come out of his car and then ALFREDO FLORES comes out! He came over and said “Hey!” and Amanda gave him her camera; he grabbed it and took a picture with us! Even though you can’t see our faces, WE STILL GOT A PICTURE! He’s so funny and nice too! 2 hours later, by this point, Amanda and I had bruises on my arms from holding onto the gate, our feet were cramping up from standing on the gate bars, the bushes and leaves behind us were getting all up in our hair and ants crawling up our legs! It was so bad! THE THINGS WE DO FOR THIS BOY! But hey…we were already there. We weren’t leaving or giving up. WE WERE GONNA MEET JUSTIN THAT DAY. A few minutes later, we suddenly saw Justin walk across the hall in the studio. I SCREAMED SO LOUD! He was wearing all black, and a black beanie. He looked so hot. Then, 11:11 came, and obviously we both wished for the chance to meet Justin that night. Little did we know what would happen next. This guy named Rick who is a music producer of Timbaland (@ BigRicknyc) got out of a car. I had no idea who he was at first. But my dad started calling his name! I was so confused like WHAT? MY DAD KNOWS HIM!? Rick starts walking our way. My dad’s like “Hey! It’s Rob! Do you remember me?” Rick smiled and said, “Yes! You helped fix my car a few times! What are you doing here?” And my dad told him, “I’m making my daughter’s dream come true and her best friend too.” Rick goes, “Who’s your daughter?” I raised my hand up and said ME!!!!!!! Rick laughed and told us to walk to the front of the gate. At this point, I was getting nervous. He told the security guard to let us in through the other side, and at THAT POINT, AMANDA AND I WERE REALLY FREAKING OUT. All these other people were following us trying to sneak in with us, but the guard didn’t let them through. We walked in and all the Beliebers on the gates were hating on us so badly and yelling at us! I had my hand over my mouth just flipping out. Rick brought us into the studio and we sat and talked with him for a little bit while he got a haircut. Then 10 minutes later, it was 12:55 and all you could hear was screaming outside! I knew Justin was out! We ran outside and Rick told us not to freak out and just stay calm. I gave him this look like, “Are you joking? Justin is standing a few feet from me and you want me to STAY CALM?!” Haha but I did. We waited for Justin as he went around signing autographs for his Beliebers. My legs were shaking, heart was racing a million miles, and I couldn’t stand still. Justin then started walking over to us. I was freaking out. He took a picture first with this other family. After that, it was OUR TURN. He looked at my shirt and smiled, and then at my face. HE WAS LOOKING AT ME. Best feeling ever! He motioned for us to go over to him and I stood on the left, and Amanda on the right of him. Hugging Justin Bieber… was this really happening? There were so many cameras flashing that we didn’t know which one to look at! Everything was so rushed, and he had to go in a hurry. I couldn’t even breathe, and I was so speechless that I didn’t even say “Hi” to him! I couldn’t move! Justin jumped into the car and Beliebers attacked the car and hitting the window, omg it was insane! I looked at Amanda and we just froze. WE FINALLY MET JUSTIN BIEBER. AFTER 3 YEARS, WE GOT WHAT WE WANTED. Rick made my dreams come true. All the other Beliebers had to stand against the gate and get of picture of him , while we got our own personal picture with him. I feel so lucky and blessed. On the way home, I started getting tears in my eyes. When I finally got home, I looked at that picture we took with Justin and just couldn’t believe it. My dream had FINALLY come true. Justin FINALLY noticed us. We waited 4 hours to see Justin, from February 4 th , until 1:00 am February 5 th ! It was worth it! All these people doubted us and said we’d never meet Justin and we told them, “Watch me.” Well, now we can check that off the list! I (Michelle) was 15 that day, but my birthday is on the 13 th . By Christina Garibaldi Megan Hilty in “Smash” Photo: NBC It’s safe to assume that if you’re watching the Super Bowl on Sunday night (February 5), you will see several promos for NBC’s newest musical drama, “Smash,” which premieres Monday. The show centers on two potential Broadway stars — played by former “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee and newcomer Megan Hilty — who are competing for the lead role in a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. “Smash” has it all: flashy musical numbers, well-choreographed dance routines and, of course, entertaining drama. Does that all sound a little similar to Fox’s hit show “Glee”? Not so fast, says Hilty, who told MTV News the two shows couldn’t be more different. “Obviously, the glaring similarity is that we both have musical numbers in the show, but that’s about it that we have in common,” Hilty said. “We’re very different in tone and theme and pretty much everything. We’re kind of like a glam soap opera with some splashy musical elements in between.” But Hilty admits that if it weren’t for “Glee,” “Smash” might have never gotten off the ground. “Thank God for ‘Glee,’ because they really opened doors for our show, specifically, to make it possible for us to do this,” Hilty said. “They made it socially acceptable and even cool to love the arts, and hopefully our show will do the same, but they really were the people who started that and busted down those doors, so thank God for that.” Hilty’s co-star, McPhee, agrees. “We’re just actually really grateful that ‘Glee’ has opened the door,” McPhee told MTV News on the Golden Globes red carpet last month. We can now confirm the whereabouts of Demi Moore. According to an E! News insider, the troubled actress – who was rushed to the hospital on January 23 for “smoking something,” based on the 911 call placed on her behalf – has checked in to Cirque Lodge, an expensive treatment facility in Sundance, Utah. “She’s on total lockdown and only talking to a small group of people,” the source says , adding that the actress is being treated for an eating disorder and addiction issues. Moore had reportedly been consulting with her spiritual adviser and, some claimed, even a psychic before making this decision. Cirque Lodge, meanwhile, is known as a posh facility whose resume of famous clientele includes Lindsay Lohan, Eva Mendes and Mary-Kate Olsen.
2011 was an amazing year as it was, and My Bieber Experience made it even better. I remember in late March I saw a competition to win tickets & a meet and greet for Justin Bieber. I just about had a hissy fit when I saw it. I think I sent in about 500 entries. Then I remember on the 18th of April, the first thing I did was check my email, and I saw I had one unread email and it was from the competition organizers. I was thinking maybe it just might be an email saying thank you for entering, but then I saw it said, “CONGRATULATIONS”. I had a 30 minute freak out. I was so excited, I was going to meet JUSTIN BIEBER. Then on the 29th April, I went to Acer Arena with my cousin. I went to get my Justin Bieber wristband so I could get in to meet him and I waited with a million butterflies in my stomach. Then it was time. People led us in to wait and they had a number 1 rule; it was to BREATHE! We all waited anxiously then they led us somewhere else. They told us to get into groups so we could go in to meet Justin. I remember seeing Kenny on my left and I was in shock. Justin was wearing a black top and scarf, grey jeans, neon pink Vans and OMG, his hair was PERFECT. I took a deep breath and almost forgot to breath out. Justin had 3 girls on each side of him. I was the one person away from Justin and the photographer took one photo. Then all the people my group group asked Justin if he was okay because he had been sick, then I went over to hug him. Those 5 seconds, I felt like the luckiest person in the world. I was on cloud nine, with Justin of course. It was an amazing feeling, then we had to go and say bye to him and we left. After that we saw his concert which was AMAZING!!! From the moment ‘Love Me’ started to when ‘Baby’ ended, I felt like I was in a different place. The 29th of April 2011 was one of those days that I will never forget. This experience truly taught me to NEVER SAY NEVER, anything is possible. It may take a while, but NEVER SAY NEVER!
