Bossip Exclusive: Fefe Dobson Talks Joy, Jimi Hendrix And Being A Black Girl That Rocks

After a brief hiatus from the spotlight, Fefe Dobson is back with a new album and a new outlook on life. Bossip spoke to the “black rock chick” about rebounding after being dropped from her label, what she was like as a little kid and how we can all find more joy. BOSSIP: What’s up Fefe? Tell us about your new album, why did you call it Joy ? Fefe Dobson: I called it Joy because making the record was a joyful experience, but the reason it was a joyful experience was in the process of making it. I made my first record in 2003 when I was 18. I got the chance to do tons of great things – a tour withe Justin Timberlake , a show with Janet Jackson and there was so much that came out of it and then there was the trials and tribulations, parting ways with my label, which was Island Def Jam at that point. I had like 500 dollars left to my name, no boyfriend and bought a dog and wrote Joy . What joy has brought me is liberation and it was very therapeutic and a turning point in my life, that’s why it’s called Joy . Bossip: You seem to have matured – your style has changed a lot, was it the experience of seeing the “bad side of the industry?” FD: Definitely, being so young, getting all the amazing opportunities and kinda having to scale back and start again with nothing. Learning about myself in general. My dad came back into my life. On my first record there was a song called “Unforgiven” because my dad was never in my life. And now my dad has come back in my life – because of that I’m learning about my Jamaican side. I’m biracial so my mom is white and my dad’s black and I never got to know that side. Realizing I’m related to Donald Quarrie – who is an Olympic national hero in Jamaica – that has helped bring me to this point as well. Life… Naturally you have to go through every day and learn in order to fill in those missing pieces to be the person you need to be. Bossip: What goals have you set for yourself for 2011? FD: A lot of goals. My goal for 2010 was to get my album out and to spread Joy and for 2011 it’s to tour this baby like crazy and line up my own shows and hopefully next year go to the Grammys and do my thing. I really want to play big stadiums and stuff like that and hit the masses and meet more people and gain more followers in my career. Bossip: What kind of kid were you? FD: I was a little female Eddie Murphy. I was really crazy and made fun of everybody and made jokes when I shouldn’t have probably. Bossip: What experience led you to this? FD: Music made me do this. From a musical point of view – The Wizard of Oz and Michael Jackson. Music was my only outlet and escape. Bossip: What would you be doing otherwise? FD: I couldn’t do anything else. I was asked that in elementary school when I was a little kid. You know how they go around – there were kids who wanted to be firemen, there were kids who wanted to be lawyers, and I was like “Uhhh rockstar, singer?” and my teacher looked around and was like “What do you really want to be?” and I said “Uhhh I just told you” I didn’t know I had to have a Plan B. You didn’t ask the fireman if he should have a Plan B. Bossip: What was your scariest moment and how did you get through it? FD: My scariest moment was definitely not being with Island anymore. That was probably my scariest moment because I was signed when I was 18 so I was so used to being signed to a major label. At first not being with a major label was the scariest thing. I’ve come from nothing growing up as a kid to being something to now having to start again. That was scary for me. At the same time it was liberating because it was my chance to recharge and restart and not many people get the opportunity to restart with a clean slate. So I think everything happens for a reason even if it’s scary. Bossip: Is there a public figure that you’ve always admired? I really look up to like, you know, Jimi Hendrix – because I’m a woman of color and my foundation is rock and roll and my energy is rock and roll I’ve always looked up to artists that are like myself. Why? I was on rock radio in Canada and the minute they found out I was touring with Justin Timberlake they took me off rock radio and things like that and then I was told “Black girls can’t rock” so I have to look up to any artist that’s going out of their comfort zone and what people think is not the right way for them. That’s day to day – anyone being told they’re doing what they’re not supposed to do. It takes a lot of strength to break the mold. Bossip: What issue should people be more aware about? FD: One of my heroes was John Lennon and the reason I love him so much is John and Yoko’s motto about peace and that if everyone stayed in bed for the day there’d be peace. Maybe he’s a dreamer but it starts with the dream. I think we as humans if we were just a little more considerate of the person next to us. It starts with the person beside you, it starts with not tossing something on the ground, it starts with breaking the mold. Children are going to make the world. There’s abuse and all those things and it starts with a cycle. We have to start with ourselves and the person next to us and that’s where it starts. Bossip: Do you think race is or isn’t important in the U.S.? FD: That’s everywhere, that’s not just the U.S. Where ever there is someone ignorant that doesn’t realize they’re in 2011. Bossip: If you had a fortune to give away where would your money go to? My little brothers. Bossip: Is there any one book, film or album that changed your life? FD: The Alchemist [by Paulo Coehlo]. It’s amazing. It will change your life. Bossip: What has been the biggest story this year so far? FD: What hit home to me, because I could relate to it, was Kelly Williams-Bolar, the mom who got in trouble for putting her kids in a better school. For me it’s an emotional thing because I grew up with a poor mom who would have done anything to put us in a safer school district. For her to get slapped on the wrist for it? On an emotional level that hit me. Bossip: Do you have a celebrity crush? FD: Aside from Spongebob Squarepants? Kate Moss… She’s awesome. At the moment I’m like, I can’t think of any dudes. I haven’t really kept up with who is sexy, but I know Kate Moss is sexy! Bossip: Anything you are an absolute sucker for? FD: Im a sucker for cowboy boots and leather pants. But not at the same time. Bossip: Best advice you ever received? FD: Mainly just heard it throughout from people I met and that’s “Don’t Blend In.” Don’t conform, don’t try to be something you’re not because I’d rather people, even in school, I’d rather them to laugh at me because I wore something different than to accept me because I was being them. Bossip: What question are you sick of being asked? FD: Nothing really yet. Bossip: Not the Rihanna question? FD: I used to get that, not really anymore. I think people are starting to see that musically we’re very different. I think people used to ask because we’re both women of color who are edgy and we’re on the same label, I guess it comes into play for that. No one really asks me what my favorite color is… It’s black. Keep clicking to check out shots of Fefe below!

Lil Wayne Sued For $20 Million By ‘Lollipop’ Producer

Producer Deezle says he hasn’t gotten his fair cut of the song’s sales. By Gil Kaufman Lil Wayne Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images It’s almost a given. An artist scores a major hit that sells millions of records and a short time later is sued by someone either claiming he or she actually wrote the song or worked on it and didn’t get a fair slice of the pie. Cue the lawsuit from the producer Darius Harrison (a.k.a. Deezle), who has filed a court action against Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records, claiming that he has not gotten his paper from the sales of Lil Wayne’s smash hit “Lollipop” and the album it was featured on, Tha Carter III. According to TMZ , the $20 million lawsuit claims that Deezle, who says he produced “Whip It,” “Prostitute 2,” “Action,” “Mrs. Officer” and “Let the Beat Build” as well as “Lollipop,” is entitled to his cut of royalties on the reported $70 million the album has grossed on sales of 6 million copies. “Lollipop” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won a Grammy for Best Rap Song in 2009. Harrison previously sued Wayne for $2.5 million over what he claimed were unpaid royalties from the sales of “Mrs. Officer.” The liner notes to Carter list Harrison as a co-producer along with Jim Jonsin on “Lollipop” and as the recording engineer on most of the other songs on the disc. A spokesperson for Wayne and Young Money/ Cash Money could not be reached for comment at press time on the lawsuit. In the meantime, Wayne has been working on putting the latest member of his crew into the spotlight: Lil Twist. “That’s where I get my little oomph from, when I bring my whole clique out there, and I want them to be heard,” Wayne told MTV News last week. “I remember when [Bad Boy] had Total, Biggie, Ma$e, Junior Mafia, all of them other people. Then you think of the Roc. We’re more so like the Roc. ‘Cause Jay always had artists the world didn’t know, but he put them on the proper song and everybody knows the song. But this time around, I want you to know the song, I want you to know the person, I want you to know us. And it’s no secret about it, I got the toughest team in the game right now and later.” Related Artists Lil Wayne

Rebecca Black Says Internet Haters Don’t ‘Bug’ Her Anymore

‘Friday’ singer talks about her new fame and performs her hit on ‘The Tonight Show.’ By Gil Kaufman Rebecca Black on the “Tonight Show” on Tuesday Photo: NBC We learned this week that Internet viral sensation Rebecca Black is poised to make some serious coin from the sales of her irritatingly inescapable song “Friday.” But after surpassing even Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” in YouTube views, on Tuesday night Black really hit the big time when she appeared on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” and performed her signature tune. Bounding out onto the set wearing a white polka-dotted black skirt, purple top and gray sweater with hearts and black Peter Pan boots, Black explained the origin of her overnight hit to Leno. “Oh, it’s so crazy, it’s so weird!” she said of her sudden fame. “I’ve always been interested in music for a long time, and my parents knew I was too, so my friend told me about Ark Music Factory. So, I went online and looked it up to make sure it was legit and stuff like that. “They sent me a song, and it was about being a guy’s superhero, but I’m 13 … sooo,” she said of the potentially inappropriate tune the producers initially sent her. “Then they sent me ‘Friday,’ which is about hanging with your friends and being a teenager, so I really liked that.” The next thing the singer knew, she had skipped the normal cattle call audition process and after meeting with the song’s producers, she was recording “Friday.” One of the things Black liked about the song was that it didn’t have bad language or more adult situations, but she said the meteoric rise shocked her. “I was coming home from school, and all of a sudden, I look on the computer and it had 14,000 views.” Sitting very upright, Leno asked Black about the harassment she’s faced from some online haters. She said it bothered her at first and made her cry, “but I’m 13 … so being a teenager, you care about what other people think about you. ‘Oh, the world hates me, I’m gonna die!’ But now I don’t even read them, so they don’t bug me.” With dozens of video parodies popping up online — including one earlier in Leno’s show in which Libyan strongman Moammar Gaddahfi sang “Friday” — Black said some are hilarious while others are just “really lame.” Black gushed about the support she’s gotten from Ryan Seacrest and former “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell. “Oh my gosh, he wants to meet me! That’s so cool,” she squeaked about the “X Factor” boss. She said Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, Cody Simpson and Willow Smith have reached out to offer their kind words as well. After the news broke earlier this week that “Friday” has turned into a cash cow, Black announced that she’s donating proceeds from the single to relief efforts in Japan in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that rocked the nation nearly two weeks ago, with some cash also going to her school. She then hopped up and performed “Friday” with the house band, busting into the song without delay and getting some enthusiastic help on the “yeah!” portion of the chorus from the audience. Before leaving for the taping, Black, 13, tweeted her excitement about the appearance. “What’s even better than being able to appear in the ‘Tonight Show With Jay Leno’? Having my bestfriend be able to come with

Odd Future’s MellowHype Eat Tacos With Jay-Z

Also, the duo’s Hodgy Beats tells MTV News, ‘We’re trying to put out two albums this year.’ By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Christopher “CJ” Smith and Dominic Masi While Tyler, the Creator may be Odd Future’s outspoken mouthpiece and (currently missing) Earl Sweatshirt the group’s most intriguing member, MellowHype’s Hodgy Beats and Left Brain are no less talented and the pair are primed to start making a lot of noise themselves. MellowHype consists of producer Left Brain and rapper Hodgy Beats, and they performed alongside Tyler during OF’s watershed moment on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in February. The duo first met in high school and went on to release two albums, YelloWhite and BlackendWhite, last year, while Hodgy released his solo The Dena Tape in 2009. Both MellowHype projects were well-received and they plan to re-release a re-mastered version of BlackendWhite through their new label, Fat Possum. And that’s not all. When MTV News caught up with the duo in Austin during South by Southwest, Hodgy said they planned to drop a lot more material. “We’re trying to put out, like, two albums this year, even if it’s not put out, we’re trying to make two albums. I’ll have my solo album, so for me it will be like three albums,” Hodgy said. “We’re pretty much already finished with the new MellowHype project, which is called MellowHype Numbers. We have 2 more songs to record and then it’s done.” Hodgy said they had been working out of the studio in engineer Syd’s house for the last four years, typically crank out three songs a day. “I’ll sit there, we’ll build and the next thing you know we have a song. We have the chorus, we have the ad-libs finished, we have the hook, we have everything we want. It’s not hard, because I’m not working. I’m just enjoying my task.” Despite the whirlwind Odd Future has been swept up in over the last few months, Hodgy said he was shocked by the impact their music has made. The L.A. group has appeared in and on the cover of several magazines, got “signed” in a Funny or Die video and arguably made the most noise coming out of Austin for SXSW . For Left Brain, the highlight of his time in Texas was when the group enjoyed some “good-ass tacos” with Jay-Z. (The group first met with Jay, weeks ago, during their brief East Coast tour.) “It was hard for me to look at Jay-Z for 10 minutes. Like, real sh–, this is the godfather of music,” Hodgy said. ” ‘I just shook his hand in his house.’ Honestly, it made me want to work harder. Jay-Z is amazing.” What are your thoughts on Odd Future offshoot MellowHype? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All Jay-Z

Chris Brown’s ‘Beautiful People’ Video Premieres

New video debuts same day Brown made headlines for ‘Good Morning America’ outburst. By James Montgomery Chris Brown in “Beautiful People” Photo: Jive Chris Brown’s new album is called F.A.M.E., an acronym for “Forgiving All My Enemies.” Of course, as his actions on Tuesday’s (March 22) “Good Morning America” proved, if his post-show outburst was even half as extreme as reports have made it out to be, he might not have taken that title to heart just yet. The timing of his behavior following “GMA” was problematic, to say the least: Not only did it occur on the day F.A.M.E. hit stores, but it also happened hours before he was set to premiere the video for his latest single, “Beautiful People,” during MTV’s “The Seven.” Somewhat understandably, given the backlash that followed his alleged window-smashing at ABC’s studios, Brown canceled his appearance on MTV’s show, but the “People” video premiered nonetheless. Much like everything involving Brown since his 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna , how you feel about him will probably affect how you feel about his new clip. Some may see its scenes of Brown hamming it up in the studio with the likes of Pharrell and Timbaland as nothing short of garish, while others could view them as glimpses into a man who has made his penance and now is trying very hard to move on with his life. His detractors can never forgive him for his past indiscretions, and his supporters — having already forgiven him — want nothing more than to see him smile occasionally. And both sides are right. So while the “Beautiful People” video is sure to be divisive, the song most certainly is not. Because it’s totally great: a throbbing, nocturnal knocker of a track that’s dipped in equal parts swagger and studio lacquer. Producer Benny Benassi leaves his clubby touches all over the song, infusing it with house thump and a touch of Italo-boogie. Brown’s vocals are almost an afterthought; smoothed out in the studio and downright supple, his voice is almost like the lightweight chassis atop a very expensive, very fast foreign sports car. It speeds along and handles beautifully. It’s not a stretch to call “Beautiful People” not only one of the year’s most unexpected singles, but also one of the best. Of course, some folks might not even listen to it or watch the video. That’s a shame, but in some regards, I can’t blame them. Then again, sometimes it’s best to leave the judgment up to the court of public opinion and focus instead on the product at hand. Love him or hate him, with “Beautiful People,” Chris Brown has proven that he’s not going anywhere for a while, whether you like it or not. What do you think of Brown’s new video? From ‘Look at Me Now’ to ‘Bomb,’ the singer describes his album’s creation. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: MTV News On Tuesday (March 22), the day his album F.A.M.E. was released, Chris Brown struggled , and failed to keep the conversation on “Good Morning America” about his music. And while it is impossible to ignore his reported outburst backstage, following a line of questioning about Rihanna, the music is still worth talking about too. On F.A.M.E., Brown showcases his saccharine vocal pipes, and the accompanying production is designed to put swift feet in motion. Here, he shares his favorite tracks with MTV News:
