Lil Wayne Talks Signing Drake And Nicki Minaj

Wayne’s ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ video premieres Thursday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Lil Wayne and Sway Photo: MTV News A Lil Wayne verse can make an already good song even better, as evidenced by his monstrous 16 bars on DJ Khaled’s “We Takin’ Over.” And when Wayne was putting together the roster for his then-burgeoning Young Money empire, he knew he needed someone who could take his company to the next level in the same manner. Enter Drake . “The first thing I said was this kid’s a superstar,” Weezy told MTV News about his introduction to Drizzy. “I don’t think you can remember, but I did some interviews back then when they were asking me about him and I said he’s better than me. I can’t sing. I can make a song, but this kid has the actual R&B presence. Then he’s one of the dopest lyricists. That right there, he has a welcoming appearance. I knew he was something bigger than something I had envisioned for my company when I ran into this kid. I was thinking I’m going to put my people on and we’re going to be all right, but then when I ran into this kid, I was like, this a superstar, he’s got a chance to make my company something for real, something to be thought of, to be remembered.” Since that time, of course, Drake has skyrocketed to the top with a standout mixtape, So Far Gone, and a successful debut album, Thank Me Later . What Lil Wayne didn’t know at the time he assembled the YM crew, however, was that he’d have two franchise stars, the second being Nicki Minaj , who also ascended to superstardom in her own right. As a result of signing both rappers, Wayne has managed to turn himself into a mogul on par with Diddy, Jay-Z and his boss, Cash Money’s Birdman. “I can’t front, I just thought she was going to be the new female MC that none of these other female MCs can touch,” Wayne said about Nicki. “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new attitude and this style. Now when I talk to her, I just tell her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I used to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. I don’t have a clue about what you’re doing right now, but it’s working, do it.” Related Videos Lil Wayne Ready To Drop ‘6 Foot 7 Foot’ Related Artists Lil Wayne Nicki Minaj Drake

Britney Spears Says Femme Fatale Album ‘Speaks For Itself’

‘I think it’s the best album I have ever made,’ Spears tells V magazine. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Britney Spears’ issue of V magazine is set to officially drop on Thursday, but a sneak peek of the issue, which features the singer donning couture in photos shot by Mario Testino, found its way online in advance. In the interview with the magazine, Spears opens up about her new album, her love of dance music and her rise to fame. “I don’t think I thought about ‘fame’ when I was a child,” she told the fashion mag. “I knew I wanted to perform and I knew I wanted to be on stage, but I don’t think I ever thought about fame or what comes with being famous.” When asked if she was destined to be famous, she jokes, “If not, then God definitely has a strange sense of humor.” The singer admits that she has a certain mantra when it comes to dealing with both the good and the bad that come with being a celebrity. “I have learned to always stay true to myself and never let what other people say about me change who I am,” she explained. “It’s a really important lesson that took me a long time to learn.” Spears is also staying true to her musical roots on her new album, which drops March 29, which she says embraces who she is in her life now. “I think Femme Fatale speaks for itself,” she said. “I worked really hard on it and spent almost two years recording it. I think it’s the best album I have ever made. There’s nothing to say. I’ll let the music speak for itself. … It’s definitely my edgiest and most mature sound yet. “It’s a little bit of both [an evolution and a revolution],” she continued. “There are songs on this album that don’t sound like anything else and are completely revolutionary, but I also believe this album expresses where I am today as a woman and is an evolution of who I am.” Related Videos Reactions To Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ Related Photos Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Pop-Culture References Related Artists Britney Spears

Justin Bieber Celebrates 17th with Selena Gomez

Making for quite the romantic birthday excursion, Justin Bieber enjoyed a loved-up outing with Selena Gomez in Beverly Hills, CA on Tuesday (March 1). The cute couple spent Biebs 17th b-day at a local shopping center as they picked up purchases at Dolce & Gabbana and Louis Vuitton – where the two shared a few intimate hugs giving Justin a big birthday boy smile. Justin and Selena then stopped at PinkBerry, where Justin got a sweet treat to-go. The mall outing comes after Bieber and Gomez reportedly had an early celebration by booking a $6,000-a-night suite at the St Regis Monarch Beach hotel in Dana Point, California. Of the romantic west coast stay, a source told Hollywood Life, “For the most part, Justin and Selena wanted to be left alone. They didn’t have bodyguards or parents with them, but there was an emergency contact list at the front desk with numbers for a bodyguard and some of their people’s info if they needed it in any way.” Enjoy Pics of JB and Selena Gomez:

Snoop Dogg Says Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays Just ‘A Warm-Up’

Doggumentary album is gonna have 21 songs, and ‘it doesn’t hurt to give you a couple on a mixtape,’ Snoop tells Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting Rahman Dukes Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays, Vol. 1 Headliners : Snoop Dogg and DJ Skee Key Cameos : 50 Cent, Pharrell, Tyga, Game and Wiz Khalifa Essential Info : Snoop Dogg is a benevolent mogul. The veteran rapper is putting the final touches on his forthcoming 11th studio album, Doggumentary, but before the collection arrives he wanted to deliver a teaser to his longtime fans. Hence, Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays, a take on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Fridays series, for which ‘Ye dropped a brand new effort each week. The California rhyme-spitter told Mixtape Daily he culled together the mixtape offering with the help of DJ Skee. “It’s like a warm-up before the album comes out,” Snoop explained. “For people to know exactly what you’re getting from my album. This album is gonna have 21 songs on it and it doesn’t hurt for me to give you a couple on a mixtape, ’cause I’m taking it back to the days of Snoop Dogg when I gave you more for the money. “When I give you a double-up, you spend 10 [dollars], you get 20 [songs]. That’s what you get from me. I don’t like trying to go with the way of the [music] industry. The industry will tell you, ‘Well, you should try to make an album with 12, 13 songs.’ Really, I’m shortchanging my people when I do that. When you buy from Snoop Dogg, you usually get more than what you pay for. When you come see Snoop Dogg perform, you usually get more than what you pay for. That’s who I am, that’s the brand that I build. I can’t allow a label to step in and say who Snoop Dogg should be, ’cause this is what I created.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine Confirmed For ‘The Voice’

Cee Lo and the Maroon 5 frontman will join panel of the Carson Daly-hosted reality singing show. By Gil Kaufman Cee Lo Photo: Getty Images “American Idol” may have Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, but soon it won’t be the only TV singing competition with two marquee-worthy music stars above its title. After weeks of negotiations, Cee Lo Green and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine have signed on to help judge the upcoming Mark Burnett-produced NBC reality show “The Voice.” According to Entertainment Weekly , “The Voice” plans to steal some thunder from “Idol” when it launches with a two-hour program on April 26, which would put its debut near the end of the season 10 run of “Idol.” The new show will then shift into its regular time slot on May 10 at 8 p.m. “I am so happy that Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green have joined the coach panel for ‘The Voice,’ ” Burnett told EW. “Aside from being incredible voices, they bring years of experience in the music industry and a really cool vibe that has never been seen before on a music competition series.” Even with the signing of the two contemporary music stars, there are still two judge/coach seats left to fill. Speculation continues to swirl around Christina Aguilera as a possible panelist, though the singer’s reps have not commented on the rumors. “I was absolutely thrilled to be invited by Mark Burnett to join ‘The Voice’ as a coach,” Levine said in a statement. “I look forward to working with these singers and helping them push forward throughout the competition to make their musical dreams become a reality.” Cee Lo expressed similar enthusiasm for his first TV gig in a statement that read, “It’s an honor for me to be able to help mold a malleable and new talent in such a fashion as ‘The Voice’ … Being a coach on ‘The Voice’ is a substantial responsibility, and I take it with sincerity and distinction.” Seeming to take a little poke at the sell-by dates of the new “Idol” judges, NBC’s Executive VP of Alternative Programming Paul Telegdy said his goal was to sign marquee performers who are also popular with fans now and, let’s say, younger than someone like the 62-year-old Tyler. “Not to diminish other people on other shows, but it’s a different job to break through the clutter now than it was 10, 15, 20 years ago,” Telegdy said. Hosted by former MTV personality and late-night talker Carson Daly, “The Voice” is based on the hit Dutch program “The Voice of Holland,” which strays from the traditional singing-competition format. “The Voice” will feature a panel of four celebrity judges who will sit with their backs to the talented hopefuls in order to focus on their vocals rather than their physical appearance. If they approve of the audition, the judges will push a button that will send the competitor to the next round, claiming them as one of their students. In the case where more than one judge likes the singer, then the competitor gets the opportunity to choose between judges. Once the teams are chosen, the celebrity judges will mentor their contestants and eventually duel the teams against each other, with viewers picking the winners. NBC has announced that for those potential singing stars who can’t make it to the auditions, the reality competition also will let hopefuls try out for “The Voice” via webcam. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Kevin Mazur/KCA2010/WireImage Ever wonder what you might get Justin Bieber for his 17th birthday ? Well, the pop star has the answer. In honor of his big day, he’s working with the nonprofit Charity: Water , requesting that his fans donate money to the cause that brings clean water to developing nations. “I have had an incredible year and it is all due to the fans helping me live my dream. I’m turning 17 years old on Tuesday and have so much to be grateful for!” Bieber wrote on the charity’s website . “So this year, I really want my birthday to be all about helping others. Instead of asking for gifts, I’m asking friends, family and fans to consider donating $17 for my 17th birthday to help make a change,” he continued. “One hundred percent of all donations go directly to building clean water projects in developing countries with Charity: Water, and we’ll be able to see photos and GPS of the projects we helped build!” The teen star then gave his fans some facts about they should get involved. “Together, we’ve made a big difference for many causes. Did you know that about 4,500 kids die each day from waterborne disease?” he shared. “By building clean water projects for villages that need them, we can prevent this! Chris Medina Explains Why He Told Fiancee’s Story On ‘American Idol’

‘I’m glad I did it, because the day after it aired, wonderful things started happening,’ he tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Chris Medina Photo: MTV News Last week, when Chris Medina was sent packing on “American Idol,” it was a shock to pretty much everyone — except, oddly enough, Medina himself. “I gave it my all, but, I mean, I’m in a room with 40 phenomenal singers. They all have earned their right to be there. And though I had faith in my talents, just being in that situation, you gotta have consistent, solid performances all the time, and the people there did that,” he told MTV News on Monday. “I think I had a really good first audition, a good audition in Vegas and a good audition in my last one — I sang for my life — but there were times in the middle where I was just pretty OK. And I’m not one of those people who’s delusional. I left it all on the line. … Some people had seven solid performances; I had three or four.” If that reaction seems a little strange coming from a former “Idol” contender, well, it’s probably because Medina is far from your average pop-star wannabe. Even in the face of overwhelming success, he’s remained grounded, thanks in no small part to his fianc
