By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting Audrey Kim Selena Gomez Photo: Angela Weiss/ Getty Images Selena Gomez may not be up for a Grammy this year, but she was on hand at the Grammy Nominations Concert Live special last week, where she helped announce the Song of the Year nominees alongside Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. While that category may have some strong contenders, the Best New Artist category will certainly have everyone buzzing come Grammy night in February. Acts like Florence and the Machine, Mumford & Sons and Esperanza Spalding are in the running, but the frontrunners seem to be two of America’s favorite Canadians: Justin Bieber and Drake . So who does Gomez want to win? “I would have to say Bieber just because I know how hard he works,” she told MTV News at KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball 2010 in Los Angeles over the weekend. “I hope he wins, but I love Drake as well. It’s a really hard category so I don’t know who’s going to win, but of course I have to say Bieber.” Drake may be facing off against Bieber at the Grammys, but Gomez will face off against her pal at the People’s Choice Awards in the Favorite Breakout Artist category. The other contenders include B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Ke$ha. Hip-hop floods the social-media site with tributes to late UGK lyricist on the third anniversary of his death. The Texas spitter, who passed away in 2007, was remembered by Saturday (December 4) by MCs reppin’ various parts of the country, hip-hop styles and rap generations tweeted about the rap great’s enduring legacy. Lyricists like fellow southern spitters Rick Ross , Big Boi and Chamillionaire remembered Pimp with a simple “R.I.P. Pimp C” tweet. Even though he’s incarcerated, T.I. made sure to dispatch his social-media team to send e-love to the fallen star. “RIP to Pimp C from #TeamTI,” read a tweet from T.I.’s account Saturday afternoon. Wu-Tang Clan chef, Raekwon, who is, of course, familiar with the sudden loss of a dynamic partner in rhyme , wrote “R.I.P. to the legendary Pimp C!” The missive was re-tweeted by New Orleans rapper Curren$y, who also typed his own tribute. “Young mutha f—– sweet jones pimpin the 6 got a yella bone bitch cookin D serving grits…R.I.P Pimp C,” he wrote . Talib Kweli honored Pimp with the late lyricist’s bars from the Underground Kingz track “The Game Belongs to Me,” writing , “you should bump that Bobby by the pound, Whitney by the key…” David Banner not only remembered the MC on Twitter, but also Facebooked a picture of himself in the lab with Pimp cooking up some of his memorable lines. He also shared some of the UGK titan’s advice, tweeting , “#PimpCsaid BANNER N—– WILL NEVER BE SATISFIED – DO YOU.” Busta Rhymes urged fans to remember Pimp, and gave a shout-out to Bun for actively pumping up his partner’s contributions to the game. “RIP AND SALUTE 2 PIMP C AND WE HONOR THE BIG HOMIE @BunBTrillOG 4 SO PROPERLY PRESERVING THE VALUE OF THE UGK BRAND AND LEGACY!!” he typed . “SALUTE!!” Throughout the day, Bun dedicated much of his Twitter feed to commemorating the Port Arthur O.G., reminding fans to keep it real in the spirit of the always candid Pimp. “Keep it 100 with the people you love today. A WikiLeaks cable shows that when Spain considered a criminal case against ex-Bush officials, the Obama White House and Republicans got really bipartisan. In its first months in office, the Obama administration sought to protect Bush administration officials facing criminal investigation overseas for their involvement in establishing policies the that governed interrogations of detained terrorist suspects. A “confidential” April 17, 2009, cable sent from the US embassy in Madrid to the State Department—one of the 251,287 cables obtained by WikiLeaks—details how the Obama administration, working with Republicans, leaned on Spain to derail this potential prosecution. The previous month, a Spanish human rights group called the Association for the Dignity of Spanish Prisoners had requested that Spain's National Court indict six former Bush officials for, as the cable describes it, “creating a legal framework that allegedly permitted torture.” The six were former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales; David Addington, former chief of staff and legal adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney; William Haynes, the Pentagon's former general counsel; Douglas Feith, former undersecretary of defense for policy; Jay Bybee, former head of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel; and John Yoo, a former official in the Office of Legal Counsel. The human rights group contended that Spain had a duty to open an investigation under the nation's “universal jurisdiction” law, which permits its legal system to prosecute overseas human rights crimes involving Spanish citizens and residents. Five Guantanamo detainees, the group maintained, fit that criteria. Soon after the request was made, the US embassy in Madrid began tracking the matter. On April 1, embassy officials spoke with chief prosecutor Javier Zaragoza, who indicated that he was not pleased to have been handed this case, but he believed that the complaint appeared to be well-documented and he'd have to pursue it. WASHINGTON — The sense of frustration among Senate Democrats over the White House's handling of the tax cut debate has grown throughout the week, culminating in a series of articles on Thursday anticipating some form of presidential capitulation. Whether the mood is genuine or deliberate — or, perhaps, a bit of both — is worth some honest debate. Aides acknowledged that they were airing concerns about a forthcoming tax cut deal, in part, for the purpose of stiffening the White House's spine during the remaining negotiations. None would take the step of going on the record with their remarks. But others were even blunter when they went completely off the record. When leaving a Senate Democratic caucus meeting late Thursday night, most members declined to answer questions about the White House's role in the tax cut negotiations. But the few who did talk didn't exactly hide their sadness over the state of affairs. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), for one, slyly acknowledged that he'd get himself in trouble if he answered whether or not he was happy with the administration's engagement. “You want me to be the [troublemaker]?… I'm too junior around here to do that,” said the 86-year-old, five-term senator. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) did a little less dancing. “I just think, if [Obama] caves on this, then I think that he's gonna have a lot of swimming upstream [to do],” said the Iowa Democrat, a unabashed progressive who has been less reticent than most in criticizing the White House. “He campaigned on [allowing the rates for the rich to expire], was very strong on that, and sometimes there are things that are just worth fighting for.” And if he decided to compromise away from that, a reporter asked the senator. “He would then just be hoping and praying that Sarah Palin gets the nomination,” Harkin replied, insinuating that there would be few other Republicans that Obama could assuredly beat in 2012. added by: TimALoftis

The outgoing Florida Congressman is perhaps best known now as the man who unwisely branded his opponent “Taliban Dan” in a desperate bid to keep his seat. The firestorm surrounding the ill-conceived attack ad managed to prove that even an American electorate hardened to ludricious political advertising knew when a line had been crossed. It also prompted a discussion about whether he was, in fact, “America's Worst Politician.” Now, as he exits Congress, Grayson has lobbed one last salvo at nearly everyone in the GOP. In a slide-show exhibit decrying tax cuts for the rich, the representative tried to rally his colleagues by pointing to the obscene amounts of money that the richest Republicans will likely reap if the Bush tax cuts are extended. In between the slides, he also managed to add slight personal digs to each of the prominent conservatives.
