Breezy and Buss hit the stage with ‘Look At Me Now,’ ‘She Ain’t You’ and ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Chris Brown onstage at the 2011 BET Awards Photo: Joe Scarnici/WireImage Chris Brown ‘s emotional performance at last year’s BET Awards turned out to be a turning point in the singer’s once-ailing career, and with his 2011 performance Breezy is reveling in his hard-won fame. Following a heartfelt, off-prompter intro by host Kevin Hart, Breezy kicked things off with his Michael Jackson-sampling jam “She Ain’t You.” The singer took the stage on a raised platform in the middle of the stage surrounded by a cluster of monitors splashed with psychedelic designs. Breezy worked the midtempo hit in an avant-garde grey suit with voluminous pant legs and a cape fashioned out a jacket. But the F.A.M.E. singer ditched the fashion-forward ensemble in favor of a black jumpsuit to helm his woozy, Diplo-produc ed banger, “Look At Me Now,” as a crew of dancers in similarly street black hoodies joined him on stage. Then Busta Rhymes emerged from a brightly lit cube flanked by dancers in eerie, transparent masks illuminated by blinking lights. The Back On My B.S. lyricist wowed the Shrine with his legendary, breathless, rapid-fire flow — much of which was obscured by super-cautious censors — sporting a unique, black jacket with enormous, ridged sleeves. After ripping his verse, the MC dropped the mic and walked off. Breezy took back the stage for his F.A.M.E. cut “Paper, Scissors, Rock,” busting out some agile choreography, and finishing up the performance with an athletic flip off the stage. When speaking to MTV News earlier this year about how the all-star collabo came together, beatsmith Afrojack gave snaps to Busta’s hypnotic flow . “Busta’s verse on it is really sick,” he said. “It’s like I can’t even hear what he said, but I love the part where he goes [mimics Busta’s rapid flow], and then pauses and goes rapping really quickly. And I don’t know how to do it, I don’t even try. But it was really, really cool.” The bigwigs at BET are also clearly feeling Breezy’s chart-topper. “Look At Me Now” took the Best Collaboration award directly after the set. From the boring Keri Hilson performance to the bland opening of Lady Gaga’s music video, much of this episode felt like a waste of time. The big question, of course, is which could would be eliminated after the previous night’s performances on So You Think You Can Dance? Here’s our recap from beginning to end … Group Dance – Jazz: The dance reminded me of a 90s routine; the throwback factor was actually nice. Then again, I like anything Sonya Tayeh produces. Pre-Elimination Drama : The first three couples were up and Melanie & Marko, Missy & Wadi, and Iveta & Nick were easily safe. Ashley & Chris and Caitlynn were safe, while Jordan & Tadd and Clarice & Jess were the first two of the bottom three. Finally, Ryan & Ricky and Sasha & Alexander were safe, leaving Miranda & Robert in the bottom three. I wasn’t surprised much, except for Jess not having the fan base I expected. Musical Guest – Keri Hilson “Lose Control”: If this routine didn’t scream pre-recorded, I don’t know what would. The song also was clearly lip-synced. I think the highlight of her performance was when her feather earrings got stuck in her mouth. It’s not like Keri was even dancing that intensely that she would be out of breath. Special Performance – Gopak (Gennadi Saveliev): The dance fanatic thought that the leaps and kicks were amazing, but the ignorant guy in me totally remembered when I used to win Tetris rounds and the little Russian Dancers would celebrate. I was in the minority that thought Jeanine & Phillip did a good job doing the routine (I thought the pot-stir at the end was amazing), so this dance was watching a “celebration of dance” Solos Mitchell – I thought that Mitchell doing holds and slow motions was an interesting tactic when you only had such a short amount of time that you would be so slow with your movements. He definitely fell out of a few of his places as well. Jordan – Jordan continued her sexy streak with the hooker jiggles and high splits. I’m not sure if prancing around would sell it enough for me and it seems as though every girl has really good splits in their repertoire. Tadd – I thought that Tadd was smart to open from the side of the stage and his music choice of “Jump, Jive, and Wail” was great especially when he emphasized the beats at the end. Sonya Tayeh was impressed and that’s enough for me. Clarice – I really liked the split in the opening, but I thought she was prancing around a lot like Jordan. The difference was that she had a bit more difficulty in her routine. Jess – I knew from the hat, we were in for a treat. Jess does Broadway well, but he does dance with a bit of a cold shoulder which he still hasn’t fixed from his original audition. Miranda – I found her performance to be a happy change of pace where she was dancing with some emotions. She was a bit wobbly during the whole performance probably because she was filled with adrenaline. Robert – Robert was good at getting the crowd to like him, but I really thought the performance lacked any quality content. His Michael Jackson inspired moves were good, but a bit redundant and more copycat than anything. Musical Preview – Lady Gaga, “The Edge of Glory”: The big news was that Lady Gaga will be judging, which seems like a better fit than her mentoring on American Idol. Her music video (or what we got of it) was a bit slow and vacant. There was something missing after “Judas” was a bit more on the epic side. Eliminations Nigel asked to Mitchell and Robert to dance again , totally throwing off Cat. After the producers scrambled to get rid of the elimination chairs, Robert had his music play again and he did a lot better the second time because he started over dancing and adding elements of interest. In Mitchell’s second turn, I’m surprised that he decided to still go slow, but I thought that he upped his game with fewer nervous movements. Nigel started the eliminations as he normally does: Jordan was told she was amazing, Clarice was told she was she had a nice smile and Miranda had amazing elevation. In the utter confusion of the contestants and Cat, Nigel moved onto the guys: Jess was told he was magnificent, Tadd was creative and had a great Jazz routine last week, Robert has a big personality, and Mitchell was also a good dancer. Nigel announced that no one will be going home , but next week four people will be eliminated next week. The double elimination will give some more exposure to all the dancers, but potentially backfire and eliminate Jess & Clarice. What did you think of this So You Think You Can Dance shocker?
‘I will not be releasing a new album this year if we don’t get on the same page,’ Fif tweets. By Rob Markman 50 Cent Photo: Christopher Polk/ WireImage On Thursday morning (June 16), 50 Cent took to Twitter, blasting Interscope Records and saying he wouldn’t be releasing his Black Magic album this year unless he and his label can find some common ground. “Ok I tried to be cool with my record company. I went to the meeting talk to everyone and sh– feels like there moving in slow motion,” he tweeted around 9 a.m. ET. “I’m sorry to announce I will not be releasing a new album this year if we don’t get on the same page.” Soon after, he fired off : “My whole career iv been doing sh– and they have been playing catch up this is the last f—ing album THEY BETTER WAKE UP AND WORK.” A source close to 50 confirmed to MTV News that he is, in fact, tweeting from the account and it has not been hacked. On April 18, the Southside Jamaica, Queens, rapper tweeted that he was going to drop the album’s lead single during that week, but never did. When MTV News caught up with him a few days later on the L.A. set of Nicole Scherzinger’s “Right There” video, 50 backtracked , saying that instead, he opted to work with Interscope rather than independent of them. “I tweeted something about the actual single,” 50 Cent said. “While I’m out here, I got a meeting, I gotta sit with Jimmy [Iovine, chairman of Interscope/Geffen/A&M], I gotta sit with the guys that push the button. I’ve done it by myself on my other albums, ’cause I got my own radio staff. And I worked the record and get it to 500 spins and then let them kick in. But I think it’s better to just go with the entire building, have everybody on deck so they understand my plans for this project.” Judging from Fif’s tweets on Thursday, it’s safe to assume that those meetings didn’t go so well. “I worked really hard on this album I’m not gonna let it come out like some bullsh–. There use to me just putting it out,” he continued to tweet before finally giving in to fans’ tweets urging him to release new music. “Ok f— it I’m putting the first song off my new album out tonight.” Related Artists 50 Cent
