53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards Pre-Telecast – Rap Solo Performance
Before hatching on stage and performing “Born This Way,” Lady Gaga claimed she spent days in the egg carried down the Grammy Awards red carpet . Might there be a major crack in that story? Just hours before the February 13 show, sources say that a mysterious blonde woman was being wheeled around in a clear coffin-like box backstage. The woman was spotted backstage right around the time Gaga finished rehearsing for her performance. Was the star trying to remain out of sight? Hours later, Gaga famously arrived inside of a weird alien egg vessel. Or did she? Was she simply hanging out in a coffin, only to incubate much later? It matters little, of course. She still killed it on stage whenever she got inside the thing. But the time she spent inside before hatching is questionable. Anyway, follow the jump for another look at her live performance! Color and fun ruled the red carpet at London awards show on Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna at the 2011 Brit Awards Photo: Dave Hogan/ Getty Images Just days after the Grammy Awards , some of music’s biggest names crossed the pond and hit the red carpet for the 2011 Brit Awards in London. The fashions on display were definitely all about embracing your personal style and kicking it up 10 or so notches. Rihanna looked like the living embodiment of her colorful “S&M” video in her Dior Haute Couture gown. A rainbow of colors including purple, turquoise and lime green, the dress was shocking and yet incredibly feminine thanks to tulle and bow detailing. Avril Lavigne proved she’s still all punk rock in her little vintage Julien Macdonald black dress. The dress’ frilly bottom was complemented by a sequined top. Lavigne accessorized the look with her signature colored streaks and heavy, smoky eyes. Adele went for ladylike chic on the carpet in her cocktail-length black dress. Cheryl Cole donned a sophisticated floor-length, backless gown by Stella McCartney that was amped up with sequins. Eliza Doolittle went to the Rihanna school of fashion for her look. The pop singer graced the red carpet in a short, white, sleeved dress that seemed pretty dull until she turned around and exposed the plumage of multicolored fringe on her derriere. Newcomer Jessie J looked goth in her open-toe ankle boots and super-short green satin dress. She wore it with super-heavy smoky eyes and deep red lips. The guys also showed off their personal styles. Justin Bieber donned his signature black leather jacket, black pants and skinny black tie. Mark Ronson looked chic in a tailored sharkskin suit complete with skinny tie and white shoes. And leave it to Cee Lo Green to say “f— you” to all the rules of red-carpet style. He wore a bedazzled tracksuit to the show. Choreographer Laurieanne Gibson opens up about Gaga’s vision for the song and video on ‘The Seven.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Following Lady Gaga’s performance of “Born This Way” at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, fans are wondering what they will see in the Nick Knight-directed music video for the feel-good disco track. “I can’t tell you, but I will tell you it is a life-changing experience,” Gaga’s choreographer Laurieanne Gibson said on MTV’s ” The Seven .” “You can expect the highest level of execution in vocal music art and dance … but you will be shocked.” She didn’t specify if the video would be an extension of Gaga’s performance of Sunday night, but she did go into further detail about what she and Gaga and the entire Haus of Gaga had in mind when conceiving the idea for the unusual take on the song. “Well, actually it’s a vessel. When Gaga played me the record, it took me quite some time to feel the direction and the inspiration, and when she played it for me two weeks later, I was like, ‘I think I got it.’ I said, ‘We have to birth a new race, a race that cannot hate.’ And, of course, as genius as she is, she runs with it.” Gaga revealed that she spent 72 hours inside the vessel, and Gibson explained that precautions were taken to make sure she’d be safe in there. “We made sure the Lady was not suffocating with an oxygen tank in there while incubating, checking her new DNA, which was producing this new race,” she explained. “This race does not give up and does not give in. “When you try to break this performance down, it minimizes the message,” she added. “It’s about the vocal performance while dancing the amazing choreography. It feels like a standalone dance piece, a standalone theatrical moment. By Kara Warner Selena Gomez attends the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images For those clued in to the world of Selena Gomez, Disney Channel darling and star of “The Wizards of Waverly Place,” budding recording artist, and the current romantic interest of one Justin Bieber (or so we assume — they have yet to publicly acknowledge the fact that they’re dating, comments from co-stars and vacation photos aside), her attendance at tonight’s Grammy Awards ceremony might seem solely pegged to her Bieber connection and presenting the Best New Artist trophy. However, when MTV News caught up with Gomez on the red carpet, she revealed that she was most excited about a certain rapper from Detroit, not a teen sensation from Canada. Check out photos of Eminem’s Grammy performance and more! “I’m actually very excited about Dr. Dre and Eminem’ s performance ,” Gomez told MTV’s Sway during our live-stream broadcast. “I love Eminem. I’m a huge Eminem fan, so I’m very excited to see him.” Gomez added that her stepdad was equally excited for that performance (Dre’s first in about 10 years), in that he never wants to come with her to big events, but made an exception for Eminem tonight. When asked why she loves Eminem so, Gomez said it’s all about his swagger — or lack thereof. “For me, I think he’s so free within himself,” she explained. “Music is an awesome way to express yourself, but when you see him onstage and he comes to events like this, you never see him having to be all stiff and cool. He’s just in a hoodie, goes on and performs, and I love that.” Sway wondered aloud whether this means Gomez likes bad boys. “Sometimes, yeah,” she admitted with a smile. And what about an Eminem/Gomez musical collaboration? Would she be into that? “Oh gosh. Who would say no to that?” she said. “I don’t think I’m cool enough.
