Lil Wayne’s Energy Is ‘Always Up,’ Cory Gunz Says

‘Regardless if you’re writing a verse for somebody else’s album, write it like it’s for yours,’ MC tells MTV News of what he’s learned from Weezy. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Cory Gunz and Lil Wayne on the set of “6 Foot 7 Foot” Photo: Rahman Dukes/MTV News Long before Charlie Sheen proclaimed he only had one gear (“Go!”), Lil Wayne proved to be a high-octane performer. From his legendary mixtape run that saw the Cash Money rapper release a yacht-load of free material to his song-stealing cameo on DJ Khaled’s posse cut “We Takin’ Over,” Weezy is powered like an Energizer. It’s a lesson that isn’t lost on his latest prot

‘American Idol’ Top 13 Performance Show Will Be Pretaped

Producer Nigel Lythgoe says pretaping will continue for several weeks as new judges and director get up to speed. By Gil Kaufman Casey Abrams Photo: FOX If you were looking forward to watching the “American Idol” top 13 perform live for the first time on Wednesday night (March 9), well, you’ll have to just keep waiting. The singers pretaped their performances on Tuesday night after the Fox network confirmed that the show is not quite ready to go fully live. A network representative told People magazine, “we have pretaped shows at this stage of the competition before … although it’s rare.” Among the reasons the network cited for pretaping the show is to make sure that all 13 contestants’ performances make it into the two-hour broadcast. It is only the second time in “Idol” history that there have been 13 finalists, and even with 12 singers in the past, producers have sometimes struggled to get all the songs in without running over . Because some “Idol” fans are conspiracy-minded by nature, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe launched a preemptive strike on Twitter on Sunday to explain and defend the decision to keep the performances taped for the next few weeks. “We are pretaping for 2 weeks as we have a new Director & new judges. It has nothing to do with manipulation you morons.” That comment, of course, led to some spirited back-and-forth between Lythgoe and said “morons,” some of whom needled Lythgoe about the alleged manipulation. “I love you all getting riled up. The Tweet was directed at the MORONS who said we are pretaping to manipulate the show. Not the TRUE fans!” wrote Lythgoe, who eventually threw his hands up and added, “Sorry I can’t play anymore I have to go to work. There’s manipulating to be done. xox.” He updated the situation on Tuesday, lamenting , “It’s been a tough day trying to get the sound right. With a mix of live band, Jimmy Iovine’s amazing producer’s tracks and live vocals.” He also revealed later in the day that the top 13 had recorded vocals for full-length tracks, which he believes will be available on iTunes after the show airs on Wednesday. Thursday night’s elimination show will air live. Skylar Grey On Her Role In Dr. Dre’s ‘I Need A Doctor’

Singer/songwriter also discusses her newfound, post-Grammy performance fame with ‘RapFix Live.’ By D.L. Chandler, with reporting by Sway Calloway Skylar Grey Photo: MTV News Ever since her breakout performance on the 2011 Grammy Awards alongside Eminem and Dr. Dre, singer/songwriter Skylar Grey has exploded onto the scene and shows no signs of letting up. The 25-year-old Wisconsin native joined “RapFix Live” on Thursday afternoon after the world premiere of Dre’s video for “I Need a Doctor,” which features the dark-haired beauty’s urgent and haunting vocals. MTV News asked the red-hot songstress about her role in Dre’s new video for the second single from his final opus, Detox, but not before pointing out Skylar’s newfound notoriety. “Ever since the Grammy performance, we’ve been bombarded with people wanting to work with me, and interviews. It’s been pretty crazy,” Grey said. We asked the buzzing young vocalist about her role in the dramatic and epic video, in which she appears as a ghostly apparition. “My role in the video is not necessarily what you would expect,” shared Skylar. “I play a doctor, but it makes sense because I’m the rehabilitation doctor and [I’m] kind of bringing Dr. Dre back to life.” While Grey doesn’t consider herself an actor, she praised both Eminem and Dre for their performances in the video. “I thought that they were good, really good,” Skylar said. “I’ve seen Em do cameos in movies, and well, Em did ‘8 Mile,’ and I think he’s really talented in that area.” Grey is currently working with Alex da Kid on her debut album. Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson Top Grammy Performer Poll

Fans can’t wait for their Aretha Franklin tribute, with Lady Gaga and Eminem’s performances the next most anticipated. By Kyle Anderson Christina Aguilera Photo: Getty Images The 53rd annual Grammy Awards are almost here, and while the hardware tends to be the main event, the roster of performers is one of the most star-studded and high-profile in the show’s history. Eminem, Dr. Dre, Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Drake, Arcade Fire, Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry, Muse, B.o.B, Usher, Bob Dylan and Bruno Mars are among the heavy hitters who will be taking the stage Sunday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. But which performance is creating the most buzz among fans tuning in to watch the show? Earlier this week, the MTV Newsroom blog posed just such a question, and the results are now in. As soon as voting began, the competition became a war of attrition between supporters of Lady Gaga and hard-core devotees of Eminem. But once the producers announced that there would be a tribute to Aretha Franklin led by Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson , the competition suddenly morphed into a three-way dance. After hundreds of thousands of votes were cast, the Aretha Franklin tribute (also featuring Florence Welch, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams) finished in first place with 45 percent of the total vote. It’s a pretty impressive finish, especially considering that the performance wasn’t announced until after voting began. Lady Gaga ended up in second place with 23 percent, with Eminem just behind her with 20 percent. Perhaps fueled by the buzz over the release of “Never Say Never,” Justin Bieber made a late run and managed to cobble together 9 percent. Katy Perry was the only other Grammy performer to pick up more than a single percentage point, and poor Miranda Lambert ended up bringing up the rear. All of Sunday night’s Grammy performances promise to be electric, but fans can barely contain themselves for Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga and Eminem. Don’t miss “Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys,” a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com.
