Why Should You View Your Life Through A Broad Lens?

See the article here:

Have you ever had one of those days where you find yourself trying to piece together conversations you had with someone? This could be from a friendship, a potential love interest, or even a family member, as life can be confusing to figure out on occasion. Maybe you are trying to decipher how someone feels about a particular idea or just really have no idea what is going on anymore in terms of what a particular person or group are thinking. I, for one, tend to over-analyze everything unconsciously and always tend to find myself in these predicaments where I just have to step back and force myself to stop thinking for a while. In the long run, it can be better to just look at the big picture of events and let go of whatever is bothering you for a period of time in order to get your bearings back. Stewing over what someone said, especially if you might not know all the facts, is one of the worst things you could do, as it wastes valuable time and energy. What are the advantages of being more broad while viewing your life instead of just nitpicking every detail? One definite advantage is that you are able to focus on other things and not be distracted by dissecting the details of something trivial. It is undeniably healthy to take a break from something that bothers you and just put all of your attention into the task at hand, like your job or taking care of the kids, even if you have lingering doubts on something else. Sometimes, trying to budget your time between multiple things, especially if one of them is dragging you down, is not the best plan, especially if you are missing the big picture of the situation. Maybe you completely overlooked the overall message of what someone said or were too busy worrying to see that the person was viewing you favorably after-all. Using “this too shall pass” as a mantra in terms of your doubts is a fantastic plan, as getting worried prematurely or overreacting can end up being for naught. If you continue to not be able to see the big picture and need reassurance, call your friend or family member and try to decipher the situation through communication rather than the passive-aggressive approach you may be taking. In another light, seeing the intricacies in a situation is not most people are accustomed to when talking to someone. Personally, I’ve found that when I ask friends or family members why they said something, for example, many of them don’t even remember the small details that I might have taken away from the exchange. Only a handful of people are usually in-tune with the inverted lens of a situation and this could be a burden for them if you take things more sensitively than others. In order to move beyond the paranoia and see what is really occurring, sometimes you just need to step back and view the dialogue from their point of view, rather than adding your own interpretation to the mix! 5 Ways To Market Yourself & Combat Overthinking A final reason why you should view life situations more broadly is that life is too short to worry so much about the minute details. While many times, it’s good to keep an eye on the small moments that might be interludes into bigger problems, oftentimes there is not a reason to be worried about the state of your relationships. Maybe you need more sleep or it has just been a long, stressful day and you just need a detox from the office. Whatever the reason for your sensitivity, you might be worrying one day while there are many other moments in life for you to mold your attitude. If you keep the faith that everything will be okay in the end, you will start to really believe that and start looking toward the future for your happiness. Never give up your “glass is half full” attitude, since most often, that is all you need to kick-start your optimism and help you further towards fulfillment! To end this post, I quote Eleanor Roosevelt, who has proven to be very inspirational to me as of late and has some very strong convictions about viewing life with a broad lens. This quote is very true in that it summarizes the idea of looking beyond the fine details and exposing the truth through life experiences. Eleanor states: “My experience has been that work is almost the best way to pull oneself out of the depths.” To interpret this quote in terms of one’s standpoint in a conversation, in order to see the big picture of a situation, one has to keep on moving in life and not dwell on the intricacies of a moment. By keeping busy and constantly having one’s eye on the future, optimism can shine through and make one less likely to overreact. In this way, the broad lens of a moment is more important in that it keeps us motivated even when the small details might be trying to keep us down. The most important thing to remember is to keep your head up high, your eyes wide open, and a clear head on your shoulders, as by seeing the big picture of a situation, you can keep your life moving forward and successfully thwart distraction in your life! 5 Ways To Start Living Up To Your Values

Excerpt from:

Sometimes it can be hard to do what you set out to do. For whatever reason, the values that you hold dear, like work ethic, are not doing anything for you at a particular moment. Maybe you set goals for yourself, but in the end, you feel like you are contradicting yourself because they never get accomplished. Perhaps you plan to be productive, or to gain the courage to do something important, but you end up falling into the same rut you said you never would. It can be hard not to fall prey to contradictions in your life, but there are always ways that you could change things and definitely step up your game!: 1. Combat cognitive dissonance with positive imaging. What exactly is cognitive dissonance, you ask? Well, it is the idea that your mind has a particular goal, but your actions speak as contradictions in that respect. For example, you might really despise lateness, but you are always running behind yourself. In order to overcome specific weaknesses in your life, you must be willing to go the distance to make your inner monologue and outer self match in values. By creating positive images in your head of your eventual success, a sense of inner motivation could be a strong catalyst for a change in your situation. 2. Write your goals down and post them somewhere as reference. This might seem like a simple, somewhat obvious way to remember what you mean to accomplish, but writing things down could be the tangible way you need to properly stack your priorities. Sometimes when the ideas are flowing through your head, any sort of distraction can cause you to lose focus from what you are planning to do. In order to make the most out of your time, it can be very useful to have everything laid out in front of you to instill subconscious motivation! I know that some people (like myself) are not very good at planning, but the very existence of a tangible goal list can be a helpful reminder of what you COULD be – and a core level of determination is all you need to get there! 3. Remind yourself of things you can look forward to. Sometimes the best events in life are ones that you have to patiently wait for. Maybe you are waiting for a trip to see someone you miss or have a few days off from work in order to just relax. If you make it so you have rewards or exciting prospects in the forefront to look forward to, it can be easier for you to be able to accomplish new things and be productive until those events arrive! Perhaps you want to teach yourself some of your favorite songs on your guitar or become more proficient at a certain aspect of your job. When you have something fun you’re waiting for, in the meantime, you can accomplish anything! 5 Ways To Make Life Transitions Easier 4. Know yourself and set goals based on the way you think. If you know that you naturally wake up late and are on the run all of the time, then don’t try and change your internal clock! Working around your weaknesses and finding productivity around your already formed habits can be a much better way to improve your productivity. Why try to change something that is already fundamental to your being? The same goes with procrastination and the way you get your work done – sometimes what hinders others in the work atmosphere is something that is successful for someone else! Everyone has their own individual habits and techniques that they use to get through the day, therefore, setting goals should be a unique process built around the person, not the task. 5. Start small and build on what you can slowly accomplish. Taking baby steps towards your goals is the best way to go, as trying to accomplish too much at once can tear down the very wall of productivity you created! As a close family member uses as his humorous motto: “How do you eat an elephant? By breaking it into small chunks.” In order to get the most out of what you have done, you have to take it slowly and make sure you are not taking on too much at once. Having productive, realistic goals makes for the strongest results, so being slow and deliberate about life can have its advantages! No matter what your core values are, the fundamental idea of bringing your inner motivation to the front of your mind is the best scenario for success! If you don’t naturally have that internal determination to accomplish tasks, channeling someone who has the productive bug might be the best bet for you. Try to spend more time in a lively, collaborative atmosphere where your ideas can be bounced off others and goals can be tweaked. Whether it’s a small personal goal or a lofty career move, it’s important to remember that the best outcomes come from internal motivation mixed with external action. Never forget the values you associate with yourself, as keeping yourself true to your methodology is what makes accomplishments what they are! 5 Ways To Market Yourself & Combat Overthinking

Read the rest here:

This morning on my way to work, something interesting happened that made me think more critically about how time and change are interconnected. I was walking on the train platform at a quarter past eight as usual when I turned around and saw someone I had not seen in at least three years. We both stared at each other in a caffeine-deprived haze, somehow managing to exchange awkward hellos and small talk before boarding the train. Although we have known each other for most of our childhoods, this surprise of running into each other years after graduating made it evident how much had changed. As we started trading stories about our jobs and lives at the moment, another former classmate walks by, prompting a similar scene of greetings and mutual intrigue. After we had all piled into the train a short time later, I flopped down into my seat and mused about what had just happened. While I ended up taking a few minutes to settle my nerves, I settled into a comfortable calm and suddenly felt inspired to report on what I had experienced. What became clear to me is that when you are caught off-guard by unexpected social situations, you lose the illusion of control over your surroundings, therefore, you subconsciously overthink everything that occurs. It was an especially nerve-wracking scenario because I had only woken up an hour before this meeting and had not yet had my caffeine fix, which my friends joke is the only way I become less zombie and more human. Feeling suddenly thrown back into past friendships can seem weird, even if you are more confident and self-assured than you ever were when you knew them. In the current days of social networking sites such as Facebook, the likelihood of meeting up with old friends and classmates has become exponentially higher. Making good impressions in person, however, and being able to market the real you takes perseverance and is a strength that can only be built upon. Here are some tips for keeping yourself fresh and approachable, even when your nerves have taken over: 1. Keep your eyes peeled and your head held up high. The most important part of being confident is that your inner and outer self match. Stand up straight, have a smile on your face, and keep a watchful eye of your surroundings, as you never know who you are going to meet at any given time. If you are able to display the confidence and self-assured grace that you have built up since your school days, then others will be able to see it, too, and be drawn to you! Embrace your current self and keep others up-to-date on your poised demeanor! The Importance Of Seeking Out Connections With People 2. Smile and look into people’s eyes while talking. This might seem like an obvious idea when it comes to conversation etiquette, but many people forget even the simplest forms of communicating when they encounter an unexpected situation! Although you may be caught off-guard when first seeing someone you know, being able to hold eye contact and provide a warm smile can ease even the most awkward of situations. Reminding yourself that these are people you used to know or should get to know better can put you in a better mindset and ready to communicate more effectively! 3. Brainstorm some interesting “go-to” facts about your life to share with others. One of the most common questions that is asked when you haven’t seen someone in a while is “What are you up to now?” This can be a difficult question to answer for some people, as they might have a myriad of interests or a job that is difficult to describe. If you have a complicated list in your mind at the moment and don’t know how to break it down, think of a few key facts about yourself and keep them in the back of your mind for social situations. You never know when you might need to get your shine on! 4. Wake up with an optimism for the upcoming day. Get yourself ready in the morning with confidence and dress the way you feel best! If you have a poor attitude to begin with, who’s to say the rest of your day won’t be spectacular? You just have to have the faith in who you are – a strong, independent woman who can do anything she puts her mind to! If you don’t keep the glass half full, who will? You have to exude the confidence that you know you have and work it to your advantage. Never give up your self-worth in favor of nerves and lack of courage! Optimism & The Art Of Facing Your Fears 5. Be yourself. Always being true to yourself is the best advice in terms of marketing your strong points and keeping your self-esteem alive! Even if someone tells you that you have to dress differently or adopt a new style that isn’t comfortable for you (unless that person is your boss!), you shouldn’t have to compromise or change yourself for someone else. The best way to show others the real you is to BE the real you from the get-go! Never forget who you are and always strive to better combat your emotions through an optimistic lens. By giving yourself permission to spread your wings as the person you truly are, others will see this brightness and be encouraged by your confident, assured attitude! Be who you are and don’t ever sacrifice that. Being aware of how you exude your outer confidence and attitude makes it much easier to market yourself to the best of your ability – and anyone that you encounter will see this! By bringing out the eye contact, smiling, and assured demeanor when asked about your life, you have the opportunity to come off as an interesting and fantastic person to interact with. Never give up your originality or quirks, as by learning how to use these to your advantage, you can charm anyone with the real you – and be proud of who you are! 5 Ways To Market Yourself & Combat Overthinking

Has Technology Made Us More Awkward?

Excerpt from:

Yesterday, as I was walking back from the train station after a long day at work, I ran into someone I knew on the way home. After we exchanged greetings and we proceeded to chat, it quickly became hard to hold a conversation as we both seemed lost in our own worlds. We had both not been expecting this chance meeting and were tired from work, but I later realized that there was more to that encounter than just lethargy from the end of the day. I had spent most of the train ride on my phone surfing the internet and reading a book, which are both very solitary activities. The bulk of my job requires me to be on my laptop, so obviously I have become very accustomed over the years to communicating online. I even find myself making lunch plans through e-mail, even though the person I’m messaging is in the same side of the building. Ordinary face-to-face contact has become an alternate reality to sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where you can post your day-to-day thoughts and send messages instantly from person to person. You don’t even have to open your mouth or leave your chair anymore to be able to ask people questions or find out about their daily life. The addition of the internet onto cell phones has also become a gateway to instant gratification and can sometimes even spawn new friendships if you are too shy to speak to someone on a more personal level. However, if you really think about it, what is technology doing to the fundamental social skills that people have to learn and cultivate? If you can’t talk to someone in person and you resort to e-mailing or Facebook-ing them, is that really the start to a healthy relationship? While there are definitely some advantages to the technology that have made communication easier in the long run, there are still some drawbacks in the way people relate to each other with this changing technology. Is Social Networking Bad For Your Child? Thinking back to even ten years ago, cell phones were less advanced and social networks were not the ultimate gathering place. E-mail was still important and frequently used, but you couldn’t access it as easily as you can with today’s rash of Smart-phones. The latter has actually become something of interest to me as of late, as I just recently invested in an iPhone. Being able to access your Facebook account or e-mail on the run can be a blessing and a curse, as having so much connectivity can be helpful, as well as distracting. While it might be great to be able to look up street directions or a song that you heard on the radio, sometimes the urge to check one’s phone for new messages can end up replacing human-to-human interaction. Despite the new distractions, I was recently discussing the merits of cell phones and computers with a friend at lunch today and we were both in awe of how we survived without them for so long. Mailing letters and stopping by at people’s houses unannounced seems foreign to us in this day and age, since the fast-paced world has made people accessible at an instant. Ways of communicating are constantly changing, yet this new evolution has left the younger generation less likely to engage in true face-to-face conversation. According to the New York Times , college students have even started using text messages as a way of resolving roommate conflicts, despite the fact that they could be discussing it right in their own room! Have text messages become the new voice, making us strangers of interpersonal connection? It’s important to take yourself away from your technology once in a while, putting away your phone and simply sitting down for coffee with a friend without distractions. Basic communication skills like eye contact and a listening ear are vital in forming bonds with other people and something we should continue to cultivate, despite the changing times with new media replacing what was once commonplace interaction. When you “unplug” yourself from the web of technology, even if for a short amount of time, there is much to be learned from simply talking to others and keeping the human aspect of communication alive. Never forget the foundation of human interaction, which involves the bare bones of creating a relationship with the other person. It is very hard to find connections through simple text, as the words have to have some emotion that only the human voice, facial expressions, and general presence can provide. By breaking the barriers that technology has built around us, using our face-to-face times as serious communication can help bring us out of our awkward funk and back into a world where machines don’t dominate our social lives! Cee Lo Green Apologizes For Borderline Homophobic Tweet

First Tracy Morgan . Now Cee Lo Green?! Not exactly, but The Voice coach is under considerable fire after a Tweet he wrote to a music critic, Andrea Swensson, following his June 16 show. Swensson termed Cee Lo’s concert “lackluster” and “gross,” which the singer didn’t really appreciate. He struck back at her with this tweet: “I respect your criticism, but be fair! People enjoyed last night! I’m guessing you’re gay? And my masculinity offended you? Well f–k you!” Who? Me? Cee Lo? Homophobic? Yeah. Probably not the best word choice. The “F–k You” singer attempted an apology on Twitter … but it’s more of a long-winded explanation. He also seems confused as to what he’s even apologizing for: “Apologies gay community! What was homophobic about that? I was guessing he [was] gay which is fine but its nice to [know] what u think,” he wrote. He deleted it shortly after. Then he issued a longer comment : The “Crazy” crooner said he had no clue what gender the critic was and that he was just being “outspoken” at the time he tweeted. “She was very critical of me. At the time I didn’t even know what gender the person was,” he said. “I was being a little outspoken that night.” “I was being a little outrageous. I always expect people to assume that everything I do is part of my character and sense of humor. I assumed that whoever it was would assume that it was all in good fun.” “I most certainly am not harboring negative feelings toward the gay community. I don’t have an opinion on people with different religious, sexual or political preferences. I’m one of the most liberal artists I think you will ever meet, and pride myself on that.” “Two of the remaining members on my team on The Voice are proud and outspokenly gay. We just did a team performance of ‘Everyday People’ and I picked that song specifically to highlight how we can get along even though we’re so different.” For what it’s worth, Swensson responded to say she was not offended.

Top 6 Tami Roman’s Memorable Quotes

The rest is here:

If I had to choose which one of the “Basketball Wives” were my favorite “wife,”  I’d pick Tami Roman every single time. She real, she’s funny, she’s witty and she just straight up don’t take NO bull. Period! And what’s more is that the other cast members pretty much know not to try her by now, all except for Meeka but she is soon to learn not to go there. In light of all of her hilarious and down to earth quotes, I’ve created a post dedicated to Tami’s top 6 quotables. Check them out below: 6. “This does not define me, I don’t move from one player to the next. What I do is establish my own.” This was Tami’s response to Evelyn at the reunion show for season 2 where Evelyn said Tami knew her and Kenny were together on the low,  she just acted as if she didn’t to establish her “spot” on the show. Needless to say Tami, for once, didn’t give into Evelyn’s advances and handled her comment with class. 5. “Let me show you how cheap talk is around this m*therf*cker!” During season 2 when Jennifer tried to act bourgeoisie off the fact that she’d “never seen a food stamp in her life” and tried to get buck with Tami, she was so close to setting it off! 4. “So then I don’t need to tell you that I f*cked Chad.” This was especially hilarious from last year’s reunion show as the person’s face on the receiving end of the comment, Evelyn, was absolutely priceless. 3. “You’re only relevant cause I’m talking to you b*tch!” In the heat of Tami and Meeka’s huge blow up last night, Tami let it be known to Meeka that she tries way too hard and is completely irrelevant. That’s definitely the truth, because no one ever even heard of this kid before the show. 2. “I do not care how Evelyn, Jennifer and Shaunie smile in your face. They do not like you.” This had to be one of the realest things ANY one of the BW’s has said in the history of the show. Evelyn, Jennifer and Shaunie are the fakest people ever, that’s their thing. Smile in your face and snicker at you behind your back. 1. “I don’t give a f*ck if you buy every shoe in Dulce, you ain’t never gonna be Evelyn!” Another shot at Meeka, Tami was full of quotables in that one argument with Meeka alone. It also made me take notice to the fact that Meeka definitely does try to be another Evelyn, as if that’s the person to be or something. I could go on and on with quotes from Tami, but unfortunately I have to stop somewhere, clearly Tami is not to be messed with. Who is your favorite “wife” is and why? Alec Baldwin Blames Anthony Weiner Scandal on… Technology?

Alec Baldwin has an interesting, even somewhat sympathetic, take on the Anthony Weiner scandal, which reached new, disgusting heights this week upon the release of the Congressman’s bare penis pic . In a piece for The Huffington Post , Baldwin delved into the way technology has shaped human behavior and wrote : “For high functioning men like Weiner and other officials who have lived through such scandals, who are constantly on the go, that leaves one tried and true source of a reliable high. The affirmation that comes when someone lets you know they want to sleep with you. Or even cyber-sleep with you.” Smart phones and social networks have opened the door for busy individuals to receive the kind of gratification they aren’t receiving at home, Baldwin argues: “Appointment sex with your spouse doesn’t always arrive when you need it most. A modern cell phone, loaded with contacts of willing fellow players, has a table with a red checkered table cloth ready for you at virtually any time.” Baldwin doesn’t go so far as to absolve Weiner of his wrongdoing, but he does paint the politician as a “modern human being” who gave in to the temptation right at his fingertips. Literally. “We tell ourselves that these devices help us communicate more effectively,” the actor wrote. “What they actually do is allow us to bypass the person lying right next to us, across the room from us or at an airport heading home to us, in order to meet our immediate, even inconvenient, needs. To bypass their moods, their current view of us and their own desires, or lack thereof.” In this case, that would be Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin. She’s pregnant with the couple’s first child . “I’m sad for him, his family, his district and his colleagues,” Baldwin concluded. What do you think of the 30 Rock star’s take? It’s a nuanced point of view, one that appears to let Weiner off the hook, but is actually meant to touch upon larger societal issues and how technology can play a negative role in our lives. Friends say Baldwin is considering a run for New York City Mayor in 2013. [Photos: WENN.com]
