SUNDANCE REVIEW: Back-up Singers Take Center Stage In Rousing, Intimate ‘Twenty Feet From Stardom’

Pulling raw talent from the footnotes of rock ‘n’ roll history and splashing their names up on the marquee where they belong, Twenty Feet From Stardom wages a compelling crusade to get background singers some long-overdue recognition. Featuring such stalwarts as Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer and Tata Vega — many of whose voices are well known even if their names are not — this rousing group portrait should have commercial legs as long as its subjects’, leaving satisfied audiences everywhere listening with new ears. Director Morgan Neville’s loving spotlight, produced by late A&M Records exec Gil Friesen, ensures their contributions will go unsung no more. Not everyone is cut out for stardom, observes Bruce Springsteen at the outset, and the film ultimately hammers its “coulda been a contender” point a little too hard when circling back to that idea in the final stretch. But for most of its running time, this personality-packed docu is nothing short of absorbing as it recaps the essential role African-American background singers played in shaping the sound of 20th-century pop music. Hailing from the gospel tradition (all the big names grew up singing in church, and many had preachers for parents), these vocal powerhouses were the soul of a new sound being practiced by everyone from Ray Charles to Elvis Presley , replacing the earlier model, in which clean-cut crooners performed alongside two or three white ladies. Now in her 70s and reunited here with the Blossoms, Love paved the way for black women to support some of the most successful names in rock history, occasionally even “ghosting” for other acts who took the credit. That’s Love singing lead on the Crystals’ hit “He’s a Rebel,” for example, though producer Phil Spector personally stood in the way of her solo career. Most of the time, the music-buying public had no idea whom they were listening to, but the industry folks certainly did, creating opportunities for the likes of Clayton, who recalls screaming “Rape! Murder!” for the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” in the middle of the night with curlers in her hair, and the Waters Family, featured on “Thriller” and “The Circle of Life” (who, amazingly, also recorded dino-bird sounds on Avatar ). In virtually every minute of its first hour, the film reveals fresh details many might not already know about songs they’ve heard countless times, reinforcing its points with sound bites from Mick Jagger , Stevie Wonder and Sting. These stars aren’t merely endorsing the vocalists they swear by, either; speaking candidly, they offer meaningful observations about the vagaries of the biz. Neville’s approach establishes a real intimacy with the half dozen singers he follows most closely, varying the camerawork and editing just enough among them to capture the distinct personality of each. The featured ladies represent several generations of success and struggle, and the pic brings the myriad talking points to life with rare TV appearances, half-forgotten milestones and other archival treasures, while nifty graphics help direct viewer attention, putting the sidelines in our sight lines. And then comes the heartbreak. Though a few have broken out of the background to become headliners — like male example Luther Vandross, who started out singing support for David Bowie — most rely on the generosity of other artists for what limited exposure they get. At one point, Love was reduced to cleaning houses, and former “Ikette” Claudia Lennear (who posed for Playboy at the height of her celebrity) now works as a Spanish teacher. Some, like Grammy winner Fischer, seem more comfortable enriching others’ performances, while up-and-comer Judith Hill (who sang at Michael Jackson’s funeral) risks undermining her personal momentum every time she accepts a supporting gig. As the film’s title wistfully suggests, many background singers have musical talent far exceeding those for whom they have performed — a subject rich enough to have fueled the tuner Dreamgirls . And yet, for various reasons ranging from market forces to the fact they didn’t write their own songs, they never managed to launch successful solo careers. Just as entire documentaries could be made about one-hit wonders, the discussion of near-miss stardom is almost a distraction from the enormous contribution these vocalists have made to contemporary music, while reducing the measures of success to fame and fortune. And yet, this perceived injustice gives the pic a catchy hook, no doubt creating fresh career opportunities for its subjects, if not necessarily the stardom that has so long eluded them. Heidi Klum Talks Nude Photos, Insured Legs, Life Lessons

Heidi Klum nude photos. They aren’t hard to find on the Internet. But the super, duper model is featured in the latest issue of Ocean and tells the magazine that one has to be careful with revealing one’s body too often, no matter how many servers it can crash. “When you have a good body, photographers will often be like “Yeah, let’s take this off, and why don’t we lose this too,” Klum says. “You have to be careful and strong at saying no, especially when you’re younger and on your own. Not everyone is cool and has your best interest [at heart].” Fortunately, as many of these Heidi Klum pictures prove, the beauty has taken the best interests of men everywhere into account when posing for spreads over the years. Among other highlights from the Heidi Klum interview: What has she learned from her career? “How to get along with so many different characters, for sure. I’ve learned to not be scared. When you’re young and pretty, you can’t be vulnerable. Not that I’d hurt anyone to get to the top, but you have to bring your hustle and watch your back. But it’s also important to find time for your time – you can’t lose sight of that.” What has she learned from Project Runway? “I really saw how much work goes into it [fashion] – from the amount of passion to the attention to detail, all the way down to the color of the buttons on a shirt. And of course I’ve loved working with Michael Kors. It never gets old.” Are her legs really insured for $2 million? “Ha! Yes… In London, I had to go to an insurance firm, and this person just checked out my legs. On one knee, I have a scar from when I fell and had to get stitches, so they made that leg less expensive than the other. But I went with it. And obviously, it’s all very flattering.”

Jeremy Renner to Be a Father!

Jeremy Renner is set to star in a whole different kind of born franchise. Insiders confirm to Us Weekly that the actor revealed to Eva Longoria at the Golden Globes on Sunday that his unnamed ex-girlfriend is pregnant and he’s going to be a father for the first time. The child is actually due next month, with sources telling the tabloid Renner is being “ultra-secretive” about it all. “They used to date but it wasn’t serious,” says this magazine mole, explaining that the expectant mother is currently living in Renner’s Los Angeles home. It’s unclear why the Oscar nominee is so quiet about it all. Last year he grew quite perturbed over rumors over his sexuality, exploding to The Hollywood Reporter over chatter that he was gay with: “I want my personal life to be personal, and it’s not f-cking true.” This should at least clear that talk up.

Ashley Banks Tatyana Ali Says She’s Not Just A Swirler, One Night Stands Are Her Guilty Pleasure And She Wants To Stalk Drizzy!

Ashley Banks loves Drake? Actress Tatyana Ali is promoting her new role on BET’s “Second Generation” about Wayans nephews Craig and Damien, she recently did a very revealing interview with HuffPo’s #NoFilter , check out the juiciest responses below: What’s the dumbest thing you’ve read about yourself? That I only date white guys. It’s dumb because it’s not true; I’m equal opportunity. But honestly, it’s really dumb to me because I can’t believe people still care about this in 2013. When is the last time you cried? I’m crying right now. I cry three times a day as part of my workout routine. It really targets the core. Great way to reduce bloating. What’s your guiltiest pleasure? Bread pudding with chocolate! And one-night stands . If you were on a reality show, what would it be called? “Dirty Laundry,” or “I Love Drake!” — in which I stalk him on tour and try to make him realize we’re meant to be together. God, I love his voice. What’s one thing you do when you’re alone that you wouldn’t do in front of someone else? Interpretive dance to Tori Amos. If you could ask Kim Kardashian any question, what would it be? We went to high school together. I’d ask her how she’s been doing. It’s one thing to read about someone’s life, but what’s really going on inside, on the personal, is often a totally different story. She’s a very sweet lady. What do you miss most about the ’90s? Shoulder pads and feathered bangs. My unibrow, not so much. Can you still rap the “Fresh Prince” theme song? Duh! Also, I miss people saying “Duh.” Will Smith played a quasi-older brother figure for you on “Fresh Prince.” What’s the best piece of advice he ever gave you off-screen? He meant this in business, but I believe it’s true in dating and love and pretty much everything else: “Never be afraid to be on your own. It can mean that your path is only up to you, and the possibilities are wide open. Anything can happen.” SMH… Remember the episode of “The Fresh Prince” when Ashley revealed her crush on Tevin Campbell? This might actually be worse than that. Do you think she and Drake would make a good couple? We’re just sayin’ girl, you could do better. WENN

Fawk You, Pay Me: Kimmy Cakes Demands Kris Humphries Pay Her Legal Fees Since He Refuses To Finalize Divorce Unless She Admits It Was A Fraud

Kim Kardashian Demands Kris Humphries Pay Her Legal Fees For Dragging Out Divorce The divorce drama between Kimmy Cakes and her future ex-bitter baller boo Kris Humphries seems to be getting messier by the minute. Even thought both parties have moved on to other relationships and even though the marriage only lasted a mere 72 days, the Dumped Hump insists on being the wet blanket that won’t go away. via Huffington Post In conjunction with legal handlings that have been drawn out since their October 2011 separation, Kim Kardashian is now saying she wants ex-husband Kris Humphries to pay for her hefty attorney fees. Because Humphries refuses to officially divorce Kardashian unless she acknowledges his claims that their marriage was a fraud, there’s a chance the couple technically will still be married at the time the reality star gives birth to her and boyfriend Kanye West’s baby in June — and Kardashian is none too pleased about that. But while people close to Humphries reportedly are urging him to settle the case and walk away, Kardashian is demanding that the Nets player take care of her lawyer’s bill after putting her through this ordeal for a year and a half. TMZ reports that no evidence has been presented that legitimizes Humphries’ claims. Kardashian feels her 72-day former flame is being “spiteful and vindictive.” Are we the only ones who think this is all getting a little ridiculous on the Hump’s part? While he’s definitely entitled to make sure he doesn’t get screwed over with the divorce settlement, is he not just as ready for this all to be over as Kim is?

Quote Of The Day: Katherine Webb Proud To Be Called ‘The Anti-Kim Kardashian,’ “America Appreciated How Classy I Was!”

This Katherine Webb is ready to straight “Roll Tide” right over Kimmy Cakes! Known as Miss Alabama and University of Alabama QB A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend, Webb was recently asked to pose for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, out next month. Check out her interview with SI below: SI.com: How surprised were you to get the call from Sports Illustrated? Webb: I was completely dumbfounded. It was so shocking to me because literally overnight I go from being AJ’s girlfriend and going to support him in the championship game to being on every major media news outlet. It’s just so surprising to me. I don’t know what God has planned, but obviously he’s working on something. When Sports Illustrated called it just became even more real that this is happening. Every single model wants to be in Sports Illustrated, and I feel extremely blessed to have that opportunity. SI.com: So it’s safe to assume you said yes right away when you got the call? Webb: Oh, my gosh. Absolutely. I’ve been approached by different publications, but I think a lot of America appreciated how classy I was, and I got a lot of responses saying I was America’s sweetheart and all that kind of stuff. I’m from Alabama and I have morals and I have class. That’s my personality. A lot of people have said I’m the anti-Kim Kardashian and I’m all right with that. SI.com: Well, Kim Kardashian has done all right for herself. Webb: She made herself into who she is and that’s fine and all that. But I guess the way I want to go about all this is, I just want to have a positive image for myself. I want girls to be able to look up to me and to say, “I want to be just like her one day.” That’s what I did as Miss Alabama and I loved that. SI.com: How long have you done modeling? Webb: I’ve done modeling since I was 18, but it didn’t take off until I moved to Los Angeles. Modeling has always been something I’ve been really good at, and has been something that’s helped pay bills. And it’s something I enjoy doing, as well. Every model wants to be successful in her career, so for Sports Illustrated to reach out to me is just amazing. I couldn’t be anymore blessed. SI.com: Take me through Monday night. You’re at the game, it got boring quickly, although maybe not for you, but for most people, and then a wave of buzz happens from Brent Musburger’s comments to your Twitter blowing up. What was that night like? Webb: I don’t think it became real to me until after I left the stadium and a reporter walked up to me and asked if I realized what was happening, because my phone was dead, so I had no idea what was going on. He was like, “Do you realize you are the star of the game?” I was like, “No, what are you talking about?” So he told me the cameras focused on me and AJ’s mom and I had over 100,000 Twitter followers, and I was like “Wait a minute, are you serious?” SI.com: Did you get a chance to at least celebrate Alabama’s win? Webb: Yeah. Afterward, all the football players went back to the hotel where they were staying. I left immediately and went straight to the hotel. By then, I had charged my phone, so I kinda knew what was happening. Immediately after I stepped out of the car and walked into the hotel, I had people come up to me asking me for autographs and asking me to sign memorabilia, and that stuff is now being sold on eBay. But we did end up celebrating all night. I didn’t get any sleep. I didn’t close my eyes for 24 hours. SI.com: With newfound fame comes a downside. What’s been the best and worst part of this week? Webb: I’ve realized you’re not going to please everyone and you’re not going to appeal to everyone and show who you are to everyone. That’s one of the downsides. But the upside is that one thing I want to do is be a good role model. Hollywood has such few good role models and I partially feel like this is why this has happened for me, and I really want to promote that and do good for others. SI.com: What has it been like to be an Auburn grad dating an Alabama student? Can you even walk around the Auburn campus anymore? Webb: Luckily, I graduated in May 2011, so I haven’t had a reason to go back on campus unless it’s been for a football game. I’ve had a little bit of backlash from Auburn, and I understand. Auburn and Alabama have one of the biggest rivalries in all of college football. But I lived in Los Angeles and there aren’t a lot of great guys in L.A., so for me to find someone who has a good, humble heart and who is amazing and treats me so well, that’s a really special find for me. At the end of the day, football is just a game. I don’t care if he’s from Alabama or wherever, I don’t pay attention to the rivalry when it comes to my personal relationship. SI.com: So what else is next for you? Webb: I’ve had opportunities to do hosting and some television shows. But right now I’m just going along for the ride and seeing what happens. But at the end of the day, my relationship with AJ is what’s important and if this stuff is going to hinder the relationship, then I don’t have a problem saying no to certain things, especially if they’d embarrass me or his family. Are you happy for Katherine Webb’s newfound success? Does it seem like she’s hating on Kimmy Cakes and Hollyweird to you? What do you think of her interview with SI — Pure Comedy or Ho Sit Down?

Jesus Take The Wheel: Dirty Azz DC Police Officer Charged With Abusing 11-Year-Old Girl

This ninja had the nerve to hire a lawyer who reps his police union , cause you know, he paid his dues and all!!! According to The Washington Post , Wendel Palmer abused a young girl from the youth choir he directed in his church from 2004-2006…his lawyer’s asking why the victim’s only reporting it now!?!?! The Metropolitan Police Department officer accused of sexually abusing a young girl in the youth choir he directed would send the rest of the group to the store and order his victim to stay behind, according to court documents. Wendel Palmer, 44, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of first-degree child sexual abuse in D.C. Superior Court. According to court documents, the abuse occurred while Palmer directed the youth choir at Bethuel Temple Church of Christ Apostolic in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Avenue SE. During rehearsals, the court documents say, Palmer would tell the girl to stay with him in the pastor’s office while the rest of the choir members went to a store. The assaults began in August 2004 when the girl was 11, according to court documents. They allegedly ran through August 2006, when she was 13. She told investigators there were “too many incidents to count,” court documents say. Other incidents allegedly took place elsewhere in the D.C. area. Police learned of the alleged abuse when the mother of the alleged victim, who is now 19, called a hotline in March 2012 to report it, according to court documents; Detectives interviewed the woman days later. Palmer’s attorney, Harold Martin, argued Thursday that the allegations were “not specific” regarding the date and time of the offenses. Martin also asked why the alleged victim waited until 2012 to report the abuse. “That should raise some question about the level of proof,” said Martin, who also represents the D.C. police union. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah McClellan said her office has no reason to question the woman’s credibility. It was unclear whether Palmer was still associated with the church. Calls to the church were not answered, and a woman who answered a Pennsylvania number listed for the pastor, Winston R. Palmer, said he did not want to talk to a reporter. It could not be determined whether the pastor and Wendel Palmer are related. Bethuel Temple has churches in Southeast Washington and Harrisburg, Pa. The name on the church marquis is Bishop William Rutherford Palmer Jr., who died in 2010 at the age of 75. His wife declined to comment when asked about Wendel Palmer. Several other people listed in public records as relatives also declined to speak to a reporter. In an interview, Pennsylvania Magistrate Judge Robert Jennings III said he knows both Wendel Palmer and the pastor, though he declined to detail their relationship to each other. Jennings said he has attended the Harrisburg church for about five years and has been to the Anacostia church. Asked about the allegations, he said: “I find that hard to believe, I have to say that. I can’t fathom it. I think he is a fine, upstanding young man.” McClellan said Palmer tried to elude police when they tried to arrest him, a claim Martin denied. Court documents say that a sergeant who knew that Palmer was wanted on an arrest warrant discreetly called 911 when she saw him inside the police union office on Wednesday, but he drove away before he could be apprehended and sped away from the sergeant as she followed him in her personal car. Palmer later turned himself in, according to court documents. Palmer is a 22-year veteran of the department who had been assigned to the Sixth District. D.C. Police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump confirmed Palmer’s arrest but declined to answer further questions about the investigation. Palmer, who joined the police force in 1990, got into trouble in 2004 after a woman flagged him down while on patrol to tell him about a domestic dispute. City records show that Palmer allowed her into his marked cruiser, took her to a restaurant and brought her back to her apartment. The woman’s husband and aunt came home and found them, according to the records. They filed a complaint with police, who suspended him for 35 days for conduct unbecoming an officer, failure to obey orders and neglect of duty. In 2009, the D.C. Office of Employee Appeals reduced the suspension to 13, awarding Palmer back pay. Palmer, of Fort Washington, has six children through a previous marriage that ended in 2011, according to court records. The records show that his ex-wife took custody of the children — two are now adults — in June 2011. A woman who answered the phone at a number listed for his ex-wife, LaVera Palmer, declined to comment Thursday. Palmer was ordered held in jail ahead of a hearing scheduled for Tuesday. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal charges. Magistrate Judge Karen Howze granted Martin’s request to have Palmer isolated from other inmates while jailed, which is common when police are arrested. It’s sad that no one will speak out against this predator. Something shady is definitely going on here. Hopefully justice will be served! Images via shutterstock

Newtown Conspiracy Theory: Professor Won’t Back Down Amid Backlash

A media professor at Florida Atlantic University won’t apologize for questioning the Sandy Hook school massacre, but denies he is fostering a conspiracy theory. James Tracy wrote on his personal blog that believes the events that unfolded in the Newtown, Conn., elementary school did not happen as we think – if at all. James Tracy Newtown Conspiracy Theory “While it sounds outrageous, one is left to inquire whether the Sandy Hook shooting ever took place,” he writes, suggesting Newtown didn’t happen as reported. He suggests there were multiple shooters and that the number of dead is incorrect, and that the government may have brought in actors to add drama. Tracy opines that “media coverage of the massacre of 26 children and adults was intended primarily for public consumption to further larger political ends.” The academic, also known for questioning authority and media regarding 9/11, the Oklahoma City bombing and the Aurora massacre, is not backing off either. When questioned about his theories by a local news reporter, Tracy responded: “The whole country mourned about Sandy Hook, but yet again the investigation that journalistic institutions should have carried out never took place, in my opinion.” The 47-year-old added that, “As a society we need to look at things more carefully. Perhaps we as a society have been conditioned to be duped.” Speaking on behalf of Tracy, Peter Phillips, president of the Media Freedom Foundation and Project Censored, said in a statement to Yahoo News: “James Tracy isn’t promoting a ‘conspiracy’ theory regarding Sandy Hook, but rather saying the media distorts the news, and doesn’t follow up on important questions.” “There were reports of more than one shooter in the Sandy Hook case.” “Tracy is not denying that it happened, but he is saying that when such events do happen it is the responsibility of the media to fully investigate all aspects of the story.” The media sensationalizing tragedies is certainly a worthwhile topic, but if that’s all he meant to imply … why not just write what that statement laid out?

Newtown Didn’t Happen, Professor Claims

A professor is causing befuddlement and outrage with recent claims that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., did not occur. The Daily Mail reported that James Tracy, a tenured history professor at Florida Atlantic University, wrote this in a lengthy post on his personal blog. Tracy explores what he says is the possibility that the Newtown shooting may not have happened the way that it is widely believed, if it happened at all. The 47-year-old professor bases his claims largely on the flurry of conflicting media reports that were made as news of the shooting was released. The Daily Mail also reported that the school has distanced itself from the professor. “While it sounds outrageous, one is left to inquire whether the Sandy Hook shooting ever took place, at least in the way law enforcement authorities and the news media have described,” he says. On his blog, he hits a number of other conspiracy theories: September 11, the purview of the Department of Homeland Security, the PATRIOT Act, the death of Osama bin Laden and Fukishima. In his latest shocking claim, he focuses much of his attention on the fact that early reports claimed that police were either searching for or had two suspects in custody. The story then progressed that Ryan Lanza was the lone gunman, based reportedly on the identification that the shooter had on him at the time of the attack. Ryan, 24, was then found at his home in Hoboken, N.J. – two states away from where his 20-year-old brother Adam, the actual shooter, committed the atrocities. Police say Adam Lanza opened fire inside the Connecticut elementary school, killing 20 children and six adults. Police say Lanza then killed himself.
