Anton Yelchin Cast In New Spider-Man Reboot?

Man, if we could only harness the energy of Marvel movie casting rumors , we wouldn’t need offshore drilling. ONTD is reporting that Peter Parker also-ran Anton Yelchin impressed the Spidey powers-that-be enough that he’s been cast as Peter’s best friend and sometime nemesis Harry Osborne. For the Lincoln-had-a-secretary-named-Kennedy-and-Kennedy-had-a-secretary-named-Lincoln trivia buffs among you, that’s precisely how James Franco got cast as Harry in the original Spider-Man waaaayyyyyyy back in 2002 (Gosh, did we even have movies back then?). ONTD’ s only source on this, though, is IMDB, so take this news with as much salt as your physician will allow. [ ONTD ]

‘Spider-Man 4’ Timeline: From Tobey Maguire To Andrew Garfield

After numerous delays, ‘Spider-Man’ reboot finally has a director, star and release date. By Eric Ditzian Tobey Maguire in “Spider-Man 3” Photo: Columbia Pictures It took nearly six months, but the rebooted “Spider-Man” franchise has finally found in 26-year-old Andrew Garfield a web-weaving boy hero to replace Tobey Maguire. Six months, though, is nothing when seen in the context of the three-year-long failed process to launch a fourth Spidey flick after the third installment of the series debuted in 2007. Those efforts finally imploded in January when a franchise reboot was announced, and what followed was a furious series of rumors and signings that kept comic-book fans glued to their computer monitors. With Garfield now the official owner of Peter Parker’s tights, let’s look back and recall just what happened to “Spider-Man 4” in 2010. January 11: After numerous production delays, word breaks that Sony has scrapped plans to make “Spider-Man 4” after battles with director Sam Raimi over script issues and the film’s summer 2012 release date. Sony announces plans to reboot the entire franchise with a new director and a largely new cast, which means that Maguire will be replaced as well. January 14: The first crop of new-director rumors surfaces: Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”), James Cameron (“Avatar”), David Fincher (“Zodiac”) and Wes Anderson (“Rushmore”). January 19: Those four names were quickly whittled down to one as Webb signs on to direct the reboot. In a statement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, say, “At its core, ‘Spider-Man’ is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker’s life.” February 4: While many possible replacement candidates for Maguire have been mentioned in the blogosphere, the first bit of concrete news comes when Logan Lerman , star of “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” announces that he’s been talking to Sony about the role. February 10: The new “Spider-Man” gets a release date — July 3, 2012 — and an unsurprising third dimension: It will be shot in 3-D. May 17: Alvin Sargent (“Spider-Man 3”) signs on to rewrite the “Spider-Man” reboot, reportedly working from the previous draft by Jamie Vanderbilt (“Zodiac”). May 26: The Peter Parker candidates are rumored to be down to five actors: Jamie Bell (“Jumper”), Alden Ehrenreich (“Somewhere”), Frank Dillane (“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”), Josh Hutcherson (“Cirque du Freak”) and Andrew Garfield (“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”). June 1: A grassroots campaign to add “Community” co-star Donald Glover to the list of possible Peter Parkers explodes on Twitter and Facebook. July 1: Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new Spider-Man: Mr. Andrew Garfield ! Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man 4.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Andrew Garfield Is The New Spider-Man

Sony has announced that the relative unknown will play Peter Parker in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ reboot. By Josh Wigler Andrew Garfield Photo: Getty Images Spider-Man’s secret identity is no longer a secret: Andrew Garfield is officially the new man under the superhero’s mask. Sony Pictures has announced that Garfield (“The Social Network,” “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”) will portray Peter Parker in director Marc Webb’s forthcoming “Spider-Man” reboot . Based on a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, the new “Spider-Man” film is said to bring the web-slinging hero back to his high school roots, meaning that the 27-year-old Garfield will need to tap into his inner teenage angst for the comic book role. “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents,” Webb said of Garfield’s casting. “He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.” In a joint statement, Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chairman Amy Pascal and President of Columbia Pictures Matt Tolmach said: “Spider-Man is a classic superhero — a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film ‘The Social Network,’ to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.” “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield,” added producer Avi Arad. “In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.” The upcoming “Spider-Man” reboot will be shot in 3-D and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 3, 2012. In winning the role of Peter Parker, Garfield beat out an extensive list of rumored candidates ranging from “Kick-Ass” star Aaron Johnson to “Journey to the Center of the Earth” actor Josh Hutcherson . Garfield succeeds outgoing star Tobey Maguire, who played the superhero in three previous Sam Raimi-directed films. ‘Spider-Man’ Hopeful Josh Hutcherson Says Role Would Be ‘An Honor’

‘The ones with Tobey Maguire came out when I was 10 years old,’ he says of growing up on Spidey flicks. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson Photo: Michael Tran/ Getty Images Josh Hutcherson may still be a relative unknown in Hollywood, but he began making headlines recently when his name surfaced one of a handful of actors still in the running to play the title role in Columbia Pictures’ “Spider-Man” reboot . MTV News caught up with “The Kids Are Alright” co-star, and asked for some scoop on the Spidey audition process. “You can’t prepare for that and it’s so big,” Hutcherson said. “To be on a list with some of the people I’m being considered with is an honor. These actors are so good. It’s such a big movie. I grew up watching the original — the ones with Tobey Maguire came out when I was 10 years old — so it would be an honor. It’s just really cool to be considered for that.” Hutcherson couldn’t give up any more details, but he did reveal that he’d been put on the studio’s official audition tape, along with a host of other hopefuls. “They put so many people on tape, like, everybody I know is auditioning for it and going out for it,” he said. “They’re just trying to figure out exactly what they want.” Other actors rumored to be vying for the Peter Parker role include Jamie Bell, Andrew Garfield and Frank Dillane. Beyond “Kids,” Hutcherson’s feature film credits include 2009’s “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant,” director Jon Favreau’s “Zathura” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” with Brendan Fraser. He’ll soon be seen in this fall’s “Red Dawn” remake with co-star Chris Hemsworth. Who do you think should take on the Spidey role? Share your casting ideas in the comments!
