Jay-Z Says Kurt Cobain And Nirvana ‘Stopped Hip-Hop’ When They ‘Dominated’ Youth Culture

Maybe Hov has a point with this one? LLS. Jay may be a big Kurt Cobain fan but we think he’s dead wrong with his opinions on grunge dominating 90′s youth culture. According to Spin Magazine : In his upcoming coffee-table book Pharrell: The Places and Spaces I’ve Been (Rizzoli), human hyphenate Pharrell Williams includes interviews between him and notables ranging from Buzz Aldrin to Kanye West to Anna Wintour to Jay-Z. For the most part, they’re of the tell-me-how-you-do-what-you-do variety, but the back-and-forth between producer-designer-rapper Williams and Jay-Z quickly reaches Nirvana. Literally. “So, where were you mentally and physically when grunge music hit?” Pharrell asks Jay-Z. “Like where were you when you first heard, ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit?’” Coincidentally, Hova was in Pharrell’s home state of Virgina when he heard the generation-defining song for the first time. But he’s more interested in discussing why the song hit so hard than where he was when it got going. “First we got to go back to before grunge and why grunge happened,” reasons Jay. “‘Hair bands’ dominated the airwaves and rock became more about looks than about actual substance and what it stood for—the rebellious spirit of youth….That’s why ‘Teen Spirit’ rang so loud because it was right on point with how everyone felt, you know what I’m saying?” Jay-Z then goes on to say that grunge actually stalled the rise of hip-hop in popular culture. “It was weird because hip-hop was becoming this force, then grunge music stopped it for one second, ya know?” he says. “Those ‘hair bands’ were too easy for us to take out; when Kurt Cobain came with that statement it was like, ‘We got to wait awhile.’” Next, Pharrell mentions that he used to see Jay-Z in his old Virginia stomping ground of Newport News, but Jay-Z is still focused on the Kurt tip. “I have always been a person who was curious about the music and when those forces come on the scene, they are inescapable,” Jay says. “Can’t take your eyes off them, can’t stop listening to them. [Cobain] was one of those figures. I knew we had to wait for a second before we became that dominant force in music.” If Nirvana prevented Hip-Hop from expanding, how is it that so many of us can trace back that day and time real hip-hop changed our life? When Nirvana busted out with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in ’91, that golden age of hip-hop was in full effect. NWA, Tribe, De La Soul, 2Pac, DJ Quik, KRS-One…Dre released The Chronic in ’92 and, it may have dropped two weeks after Cobain’s death, but Nas’ Illmatic was all anybody could talk about in ’94. Maybe the difference between 90′s hip-hop and now is that dope MC’s from back in the day weren’t trying to be moguls with their own Vodka company; they were just tryin’ to make good albums and keep hip-hop interesting instead of pleasing the masses… What do you think??

Eddie Van Halen Explains Postponed Tour Dates

‘We bit off more than we could chew,’ Van Halen guitarist tells USA Today. By Kara Warner Eddie Van Halen Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images So what’s the real story behind those canceled Van Halen concerts? Fans have been speculating about the band’s cryptic announcement about the postponed dates last month , and thanks to Eddie Van Halen’s recent interview with USA Today, we have an answer. “We bit off more than we could chew,” Eddie Van Halen told the newspaper frankly. “This record took a lot out of us. And we went on tour earlier than we wanted to so we could play Madison Square Garden [in March, before the venue’s scheduled renovation], and that threw the schedule out of whack.” Van Halen said a lot of the canceled dates on their A Different Kind of Truth Tour were in cities they’d already played. “So in November, we’ll hit Japan, and in the New Year, we’ll possibly do something special,” he teased. “But I can’t talk about it.” Something he could talk about were rumors that the band had to cancel their concert dates because their members, particularly fiery frontman David Lee Roth, were fighting again, which Van Halen straight-up denied. “Dave’s the same as he’s always been, funny, witty,” Van Halen said of Roth. “Sometimes I can only take that in small doses, because he just goes on and on,” he added with a laugh. “But Dave always lands on his feet.” The reunion tour with Roth and Van Halen’s 21-year-old son Wolfgang kicked off February 18 and will play a total of 40 shows on this leg. Mac Miller, Pharrell Making A ‘Political Statement’ On Pink Slime?

‘That sounds tight. What the f— is ‘pink slime’?,’ Miller said when Pharrell suggested the name for his EP. By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rya Backer Mac Miller Photo: MTV News During Mac Miller ‘s recent visit to “RapFix Live,” he dropped some hints about his upcoming EP Pink Slime. But now the cat’s out of the bag as it’s been revealed that Pharrell will co-pilot the project. MTV News caught up with Miller at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Tennessee, where he chatted about recording with Skateboard P and dreaming up the EP’s title. The Pittsburgh rapper released the first Pink Slime single, “Onaroll,” on June 5 and performed it for the first time at Bonnaroo just a few days later. Before hitting the stage, he opened up about the collaborative project, admitting that he was nervous to record with Pharrell at first. “Pharrell is a very creative person with everything he does,” Mac said, detailing one of their recording sessions. “We did this one record called ‘Dreams,’ and he was like, ‘I’ma rap on this.’ So he goes outside for 20 minutes and he just comes back, gets in the booth and raps. I don’t know what he did in those 20 minutes, but he just went out and came back in with no paper, no anything, and just had a verse ready.” As far as the name of the project, that was Pharrell’s brainchild as well. “It was his idea. I was at a loss for names,” Mac admits. “I was on tour and I was talking to him and he’s like, ‘I got the name — it’s Pink Slime. ‘ I was like, ‘That sounds tight. What the f— is “pink slime”?’ He’s like, ‘Pink slime is the fake meat they use at McDonald’s,’ and I was like, ‘Cool, man.’ ” From there, the Blue Slide Park rapper got a little bit silly about the deeper meaning in the title. “The meaning is that there is so much filth and ammonia in the world and we’re just speaking on how we need to clean up the environment,” he joked. “The message is … we pay for a Big Mac, maybe give me some good beef in there. It’s really a political statement we’re making.” There’s no confirmed release date for Pink Slime just yet. Related Artists Mac Miller Pharrell Williams

Mac Miller Introduces Bonnaroo To Pink Slime

Pittsburgh rapper performs ‘On a Roll’ from his new Pharrell collaboration EP during final night of the Tennessee music festival. By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Rya Backer Mac Miller performs at Bonnaroo on Sunday Photo: Erika Goldring/WireImage Mac Miller hit Manchester, Tennessee, on Sunday for the final round of performances at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival , treating fans to a few of his biggest mixtape hits and giving the first U.S. performance of his Pharrell collaboration “On A Roll.” The Pittsburgh rapper tackled hits like “Donald Trump” and a slew of new material from his Macadelic mixtape , including the Cam’ron-featured “Ignorant” and “Angels.” Mac also decided that Bonnaroo was the perfect place to give the first live performance of his brand-new single “On a Roll,” the first track released from Pink Slime, his collaboration EP with Pharrell. And, being that it was a music festival, Mac kept energy levels up within the vast crowd by mixing things up and paying tribute to a few legendary musicians. He hosted a sing-a-long to Bob Marley and covered Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror,” in addition to dropping a couple tracks from Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. into his set. Before his set, Mac played a little coy about his performance backstage, telling MTV News he’d just be happy if the crowd knew his songs. “I picture that I’m gonna go out there and no one’s gonna know who I am, so that probably will suck,” he said. “But if people do know who I am, that will be tight.” How many surprises did he have planned for the set? “Zero,” he joked. “I couldn’t bring my video screen, I don’t think, but I think [maybe] I could’ve because Skrillex brought his spaceship,” he wondered out loud. “So I could’ve definitely brought my video screens, but we’re just gonna do a cool show and it’s just about trying to turn tens of thousands of people into an intimate crowd.” Related Videos Bonnaroo 2012 Gets The Party Started Related Photos 2012 Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival Related Artists Mac Miller

Pharrell Has ‘Two Really Good Records’ With Mac Miller

‘Mac Miller deserves it. He’s working hard and he’s happy,’ Pharrell tells MTV News of the Pittsburgh MC’s success. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Pharrell Photo: MTV News So what does a #1 album get you? If you’re Mac Miller , it gets you studio time with one of rap’s most storied producers, Pharrell Williams . Less than a week after the Pittsburgh spitter’s debut Blue Slide Park landed the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart, Mac linked up with the Neptunes hitmaker in a Miami recording studio and got to work. “He came down to Miami. He was like, ‘Yo I want to do something,’ ” Pharrell told MTV News in an interview earlier this month. “He went in and again, just made like two really good records.” No telling where those records will end up, but Miller is pretty excited about the collaboration as well. “just made somethin’ crazy with @Pharrell all I can say is wait til y’all hear this,” Mac tweeted after the session in November. Pharrell and Mac returned to the studio in January, this time with Busta Rhymes, Reek Da Villian and Kendrick Lamar. If the picture that Miller tweeted is any indication, fans can expect quite a bit from the two sessions. While Mac crafted the majority of his Blue Slide Park album with local producers E. Dan and Big Jerm at ID Labs studios, he has also been branching out, clocking in time with some of rap’s most revered beatmakers. Aside from Pharrell, Miller has already recorded with DJ Premier, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Just Blaze. The multiplatinum Skateboard P applauds Miller’s efforts and toasts his recent success. “Mac Miller deserves it. He’s working hard and he’s happy. He’s very thankful, he’s a super humble kid and he deserves it,” Pharrell said. “That’s what the game needed, and it’s just sprouting up everywhere and it’s so awesome for us to all be able to do it.” What do you expect to hear from Pharrell and Mac Miller’s upcoming collaborations?
