Please Return To The Plantation? Did Tiffany & Co. Model Their Famous Heart Chokers After Women’s “Luxury” Slave Collars??

Meme Accuses Tiffany & Co Of Copying Slave Collar If you’ve been poking around on social media today, you’ve probably run across a Facebook post that looks like this: Some believe that Tiffany made luxe slave collars for rich women to place on their main hand-maiden house slaves, then shifted the style to the mainstream once slavery was abolished. Others say it was the slave collar that inspired the style of the new chains. Either way…it sparked discussion and of course led to tons of people renouncing the brand, vowing to sell all their Tiffany jewelry, flooding Tiffany’s twitter account…and making memes like these: So has Tiffany been selling nouveau slave chains with a pricey tag all this time??? Have black women wearing these been tricked into branding themselves as slaves??? As it turns out…that’s not QUITE the case. But it’s up for a bit of debate. Although this pic has probably been floating around your feed masquerading as part of an exhibit featured in the brand new National Museum of African American History and Culture …that’s false. In fact, there’s no such slave collar featured in the museum at all, nor is there any mention of Tiffany & Co. creating the collar NOR of the jeweler modeling their “Return To Tiffany” collection after the collar. Now, according to Snopes.com , The photo ACTUALLY comes from The Lest We Forget Black Holocaust Museum of Philadelphia (LWFSM), and instead of being taken yesterday, it was actually taken last May. The caption in the photo reads: This 18th Century Brass Slave Collar with an engraved name (Patterson), fancy etchings and heart shaped pendant was favored by wealthy, white slave mistresses. However, it was not worn by them; instead it was used on her female slave. The collar was fitted around a negro slave’s neck and attached to a leash as her [indecipherable] … her around like a pet. Years later, famed [indecipherable, Charles] Lewis Tiffany, founder of Tiffany & [Co. Jewelers] used this infamous collar as a prototype to design his best-selling, choker necklace which [indecipherable] has a heart-shaped pendant attached. The necklace remains very popular today. So Tiffany definitely did not make or manufacture luxury slave collars for anyone. The company was founded in 1837, and the collar in the exhibit is from the 1700’s. BUT the collar still may have served as inspiration for the new choker necklaces… According to this exhibit, Tiffany’s founder Charles Lewis Tiffany was indeed directly inspired by the style of the collar and personally modeled the pendants in question after it. HOWEVER this also remains up for heavy debate, since the collar itself is from the 18th century, Charles Lewis Tiffany died in 1902, but the heart-shaped “Return To Tiffany” pendant necklaces weren’t introduced until around 1969. You can be the judge. It’s possible but not necessarily proven. Now what IS 100% true…Tiffany was largely started with $1000 ($15,000 by today’s inflation) that Charles gained through the cotton trade. Naturally, the use of slave labor is what even made the original seed money for the jewelry brand available. But truthfully…what US company wasn’t launched with the help of slave labor? So…do YOU feel compelled to toss your Tiffany out of the window after seeing these stories about the company’s most popular style? Facebook/Instagram

Donald Trump Jr. Makes Offensive Holocaust Remark About Media, Offends The Masses

Donald Trump Jr. SLAMMED for Holocaust Reference One always has hope for the younger generations, but when it comes to Donald Trump’s kids, one just has to expect the worst. While speaking on Philadelphia radio station, 1210 WPHT , Donald Trump Jr. addressed his father’s Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton . “The media has been her No. 1 surrogate in this,” the 38-year-old said. “Without the media, this wouldn’t even be a contest, but the media has built her up. “They’ve let her slide on every discrepancy, on every lie, on every DNC game trying to get Bernie Sanders out of the thing.” Wait.  It gets worse. “I mean, if Republicans were doing that, they’d be warming up the gas chamber right now,” he continued. “It’s a very different system — there’s nothing fair about it.” Ummm. The National Jewish Democratic Council released a statement in response to Trump Jr.’s comments. “With its allusions to the Holocaust, remarks such as these have no place in a presidential campaign,” the statement read. “Yet, it is not surprising that the Republican nominee’s son would use such language, given the pattern of frequent dog-whistling to anti-Semites and that both Trump the elder and Trump the younger previously have retweeted postings from known anti-Semites. “Both father and son should apologize immediately for this completely inappropriate and offensive reference.” Independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin tweeted this in response to Trump Jr.’s comments: “An unsurprising Nazi reference from the “alt-right” movement’s presidential campaign. This is the real Trump.” The Anti-Defamation League was jumped in to offer their opinion. “Trivialization of the Holocaust and gas chambers is NEVER okay,” the organization tweeted, linking to a PolicyMic.com article about the comments. “We hope you understand the sensitivity and hurt of making Holocaust jokes. We hope you retract.” Sarah Bard, Clinton’s Director of Jewish Outreach said Trump Jr.’s comments “just how insensitive, divisive, and reckless the Trump campaign is.” “The bottom line is this—offensive references to the Holocaust are never acceptable, especially from a presidential campaign. This was in response to Trump’s team saying that Jr. was not making a reference to the Holocaust. Jason Miller, the Trump campaign’s senior communications advisor, released a statement declaring that “Don Jr. was clearly referring to capital punishment to make the case that the media continues to take words out of context in order to serve as the propaganda arm of the Hillary Clinton campaign – something that’s only gotten worse as Trump’s poll numbers have improved.” No more Holocaust references, please.

Jon Polito Dies; Veteran Actor Was 65

Jon Polito, a veteran actor who was a favorite of The Coen Brothers, died on Thursday night after being taken off life support. He was 65 years old. On the big screen, Polito was likely best known for roles in The Big Lebowski and Miller’s Crossing. But he appeared in over 100 films throughout his impressive career, while also appearing on such hits TV shows as Seinfeld, Modern Family and Homicide: Life on the Streets. Polito was diagnosed with melanoma in 2008. He recently suffered an infection following a surgery and reports confirm he slipped into a coma Sunday. Director John McNaughton then broke the sad news of his passing on Friday morning. “Jon was a born actor and will be deeply missed by his legion of friends, fans, family and of course his long time partner, Darryl Armbruster to whom I send my condolences,” said McNaughton, adding: R.I.P. old pal.” A native of Philadelphia, Polito also counted roles on Broadway as part of his extensive resume. He stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman on a couple of occasions, as documented in the following reel of Polito’s most memorable moments in comedy: Jon Polito Comedy Rundown Comedian Scott Aukerman was one of many to pay tribute to the actor after learning of his death. This is what Aukerman wrote on Instagram of Polito: One of the coolest days on Bang Bang recently was when Jon Polito guest starred on our “You Made Your Bed, Now Lie In It” sketch. As a big fan, I was nervous about how he would feel about being in such a stupid sketch, but the minute he saw me, he laughed and said, “I’ve been watching your show, and you’re a sick twist!” He spent all day delightfully regaling us with stories about Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, and Death of a Salesman. Then, when the cameras turned on, he slipped into his classic hard-boiled character. A great actor and cool dude! RIP. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten Through the years, Polito collaborated with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Is She With Her? Will Feminist Beyoncé Support Hillary Clinton In Becoming First Woman POTUS?

The CEO Of The DNC Says They Tried To Get Beyoncé To Support Hillary Clinton At Convention Beyoncé has been a very vocal supporter of the Obama’s since their first run at office back in 2008. She has also been a very vocal supporter of women’s rights, empowerment and feminism. That said, it was a bit surprising that she didn’t show face at the Democratic National Convention this past week to support both the Obamas and Hillary Clinton in their mission to make her the very first woman president of these United States. However, that isn’t to say that Clinton and the DNC didn’t want request her presence. DNC CEO Rev. Leah Daughtry spoke to Refinery29 last month about the possibility of a Bey sighting: I heard you love Beyoncé. Any chance she’ll be joining us in Philadelphia? “I believe she’s in Sweden on the Formation tour, but we’re going to see what we can do to get her to fly over for the night or so. We’ll see!” From what we can tell, Beyoncé doesn’t seem to be a Trump supporter or an “undecided” as she was seen attending an L.A. Reid-hosted fundraiser for HRC back in May. Say you'll Bey on Team #Hillary2016 , too: http://t.co/X1Jyv1CdKw pic.twitter.com/qRVZCONXig — Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) May 15, 2015 Maybe Bey is planning to publicly support Hillz now that she has been officially nominated. Will you be disappointed if Mrs. Carter is with Hillary, or will you follow her to the polls? Image via AP/Splash
