‘Moneyball’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics herald the baseball flick as ‘the prime Brad Pitt movie.’ By Kara Warner Brad Pitt in “Moneyball” Photo: Columbia TriStar On paper, “Moneyball” is a movie that sells itself. It’s based on a best-selling book about our national pastime, the screenplay for which was adapted by Oscar winners Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian, and it stars Brad Pitt, in all his handsome, charming splendor, as Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane. Throw in a killer supporting cast that includes Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and several real-life ball players, and you’ve got the makings of a hit. With a 94 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes , “Moneyball” seems to be a solid winner with critics. So take an early seventh-inning stretch and settle in for some sports clich

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology Film Gets Indefinitely Postponed

Looks like Jeremy Renner’s schedule just got slightly less complicated. According to the actor, Paul Thomas Anderson’s much-anticipated Scientology film The Master — which would have starred Philip Seymour Hoffman as a cult leader in the vein of L. Ron Hubbard — has been thrown into development hell. “I was really bummed about that,” Renner told the print edition of Total Film . “It really kind of stalled because when we were rehearsing — Phil, Paul and myself — we kept coming up against a wall that we couldn’t overcome. Or at least Paul couldn’t overcome.” Don’t worry: You can overcome by watching There Will Be Blood again. [Total Film via The Playlist ]

REVIEW: Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Jack Goes Boating Is Well-Crafted But Still Waterlogged

Jack Goes Boating, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s first time out directing a feature film, is such a gentle picture that at times it threatens to drift off the screen. Hoffman plays Jack, a going-nowhere, reggae-loving New York limo driver who appears never to have had a girlfriend. His closest friends, married couple Clyde (John Ortiz) and Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega), decide to set him up with one of Lucy’s new co-workers, Connie (Amy Ryan) — she works phone sales for a slick funeral director-bereavement guru, though she’s so awkward and tentative in this new gig that she’s in danger of losing it.

REVIEW: [REC] 2 Just Another Visit to the Horror-Franchise Ghetto

[REC] 2 relies almost entirely on its tunnel-vision, single-player style for its scares. It’s a strategy that stalls out halfway through, which means it works for twice as long as it should. Picking up where the 2007 sleeper hit [REC] left off, this Spanish horror trip sets up its premise while efficiently establishing its style: A SWAT team is suiting up and turning on its helmet cams (we’re given one soldier’s perspective, though other cameras are occasionally patched in) in order to escort a health inspector (Jonathan Mellor) into a quarantined building. No one is quite sure what the disease is or how it manifests itself, but it’s killing the people inside. [REC] 2 executes its one big twist almost immediately; the series of aftershock-like twists in its wake occur with descending intensity. The last one wouldn’t rattle a teacup.

The Jack Goes Boating Trailer: Philip Seymour Hoffman Goes Swimming

New Meryl Streep & Jeff Bridges Movie To Somehow Get Even More Oscar Firepower

Great Hope Springs already had some heavy ammunition in its camp with Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges signed on to play a couple who agree to spend an intense weekend-long counseling session to decide the fate of their 30-year marriage. But now The Wrap is reporting that Mike Nichols, director of such classics as The Graduate and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? has expressed interest in directing the drama, thus bumping its Oscar expectations from Red Hot to the Force of 10,000 Exploding Suns. Still uncast is the role of the therapist who helps Streep and Bridges through their thorny issues. Philip Seymour Hoffman had previously expressed interest, but after the jump, check out my humble suggestion who should jump aboard this Academy Award-baiting freight train.
