‘American Idol’: Tonight’s The Night

‘[Today] is the last episode of the season and I think we are just really relieved,’ finalist Jessica Sanchez says about Wednesday’s finale. By Kelly Marino Jessica Sanchez performs on the “American Idol” finale on May 22 Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images The end is finally upon us. On Wednesday night (May 23), someone will be showered in confetti and ultimately crowned the 11th “American Idol” after going head-to-head in last night’s final performances. Will Jessica Sanchez take home the title, finally becoming the first female contestant since Jordan Sparks in 2007 to win? Or will it be Phillip Phillips , whose stage presence is so similar to the last few years’ winners, apparently all he needs to do is make the ladies melt with that guitar and he’ll be a shoo-in for first place. Regardless, not a lot of people can say they stuck it out this long. “Of course we all want to win, but it gets to a point where nobody really makes it this far,” Sanchez, a.k.a. the tiny girl with the huge voice, said backstage Tuesday night. “I love that I’m with [Phillip] in the top two. It’s amazing. He’s goofy and he’s funny and he is an amazing artist and an amazing person overall.” And those feelings were mutual — in so many words or less. When asked what his favorite performance of the night was, the humble yet painfully bashful Phillips replied with that infamous smile, “Probably all three of Jessica’s.” According to the judges though, it was Phillip Phillip’s song choice of “Home” in the final round that stole the show, giving him the one and only standing ovation of the night — a moment that might not have happened had he not calmed his nerves earlier on. “I was scared to death,” the husky-voiced Georgia native explained after realizing he would be performing in front of more than 7,000 audience members inside the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live. “But you know, I went out there and finally loosened up throughout ‘Stand by Me,’ and I just had fun the rest of the night. It was so, so fun.” And after three months of crazy schedules, lack of sleep, countless critiques, powerful (and some not so powerful) performances, it’s about time to have some fun and loosen up. With Tuesday night’s two-hour finale their last show of the season, both “Idol” hopefuls, who will take the stage singing duets with some of their favorite artists, agree it is a stress-free road from here on out. “We just feel like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders,” 16-year-old Sanchez admitted. “[Today] is the last episode of the season and I think we are just really relieved. We are going to miss each other so much. We are going to be on tour together, but I mean, this competition has taught us so much and it’s been really tiring too.” “We got to the point that whatever happens, happens,” Phillips, the only contestant never up for elimination, added. “We are two completely different artists and we wish each other the best with both of our careers.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Producer ‘Thrilled’ By Final Three

‘I can’t even begin to think who the final is going to be between,’ Nigel Lythgoe tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Nigel Lythgoe Photo: MTV News And then there were three. The final trio of contestants will face off this week on “American Idol,” and if you think you know who might win, “Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe points out that there’s really no way to predict the winner. With it all down to Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and judge-favorite Joshua Ledet , the chances of predicting who will be the season 11 champion is nearly impossible, especially given the show’s history. “I guess I was shocked at Colton [Dixon] going so early . I thought he might even make the final. We’ve had very talented singers all this season. I’m thrilled with the three people who are left,” he told MTV News at an event announcing Fox’s fall lineup on Monday. “I can’t even begin to think who the final is going to be between. “And then whichever combination you look: If Joshua is sent home, where does Joshua’s votes go to, Jessica or to Phillip? Where does Jessica’s votes go, if she’s sent home? Where do Phillip’s votes [go]?” he continued about any final combinations ahead of the May 23 finale. “So… I still don’t know with the combination of just moving it around who is going to win.” That being said, Lythgoe must have some gut feeling about who will join the ranks of Jordin Sparks, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Kris Allen as the “Idol” victor this time around? “I don’t have to use my gut,” he said. “I know the results every week and nobody has won two weeks on the run. It’s so dependent, I think, on song choice now and how they do. The judges can critique, America makes its own decision at the end of the day.” Do you think you can predict the next American Idol? ‘American Idol’ Top Three Battle For Ticket To Finale

Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet make their final cases to America that they should be in the final two. By Adam Graham Phillip Phillips on “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker/ FOX With “We’ve Got Tonight,” Phillip Phillips may have punched his ticket to next week’s “American Idol” finale. Phillips’ performance at the close of Wednesday’s (May 16) episode stole the show and earned a standing ovation from the judges. All night, Randy Jackson spoke of having big “moments,” and Phillips’ gentle take on the Bob Seger classic definitely qualified as one of those performances. “That was the perfect song at the perfect time and your best performance on the show ever!” Jackson told Phillips after the song. Jennifer Lopez said it was like a “lullaby,” and Steven Tyler said he “nailed it” and praised him for his passion during the song. Phillips’ “We’ve Got Tonight” came at the end of a two-hour show that saw the contestants visiting their hometowns and being treated like returning heroes. The episode also saw Joshua Ledet retain his momentum, while Jessica Sanchez slipped a bit, proving it may be tough for her to make it to the final two. Contestants sang three songs each: One chosen by the judges, one of their own choosing and one picked by Jimmy Iovine. Ledet opened the show with Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind,” which also earned a standing ovation from the judges. (Not surprising, they picked the song.) “Out of 70,000, there’s only one American Idol. And you sang like that one tonight,” Tyler told Ledet after the song. He followed it with John Lennon’s “Imagine,” dubbed “brilliant” (by Jackson) and “controlled” (by Lopez) and finished with Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama,” his suggestion from Iovine. It was another hit. “You have this perfect marriage of knowing exactly what you’re doing and letting completely go at the same time,” Lopez told him after his unkempt performance, which saw him dramatically remove his jacket, as well as his in-ear monitors. “There’s spontaneity, you don’t know what’s going to happen, but you know it’s going to be out of this world.” Sanchez’s up-and-down night was typified by Jackson’s critiques: He called her version of Mariah Carey’s “My All” “one of the best times a Mariah song has ever been performed on TV,” but later said her version of Jackson Five’s “I’ll Be There” — also once memorably performed by Mariah — was only “OK.” “There was never a moment-moment. It’s like, you know, I mean, it needed like a moment-moment-moment.” (In Jackson-speak, that means she didn’t quite deliver.) Sandwiched between the two, she took on Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” which is more than a little familiar to one of the three judges. Tyler rose to his feet afterwards, telling her she “took a great song and made it greater,” while Lopez called it “crazy” (in a good way). And Jackson? “Dude, you delivered, man, yo, whoa, I’m like yo, all right, all right.” Our thoughts exactly, Randy. Phillips closed so strong it hardly mattered what came before. (Voters have short attention spans, you see.) After his first song, Madcon’s “Beggin’,” Tyler said Phillips “could be a new Springsteen,” while Jackson commented he felt he was at a Phil Phillips concert. All three judges agreed his middle performance of Matchbox Twenty’s “Disease” was underwhelming, but by his home-run song was a performance all but forgotten. One of the performers is headed home — this time not in a good way — on Thursday’s episode, which is also set to feature a performance by Adam Lambert. What did you think of “Idol” on Wednesday? After the jump, watch Movieline’s exclusive action-packed clip from the Oscar shortlist entry (dubbed the Taiwanese Braveheart ) in which the Seediq warriors lure their enemies into familiar terrain and launch a full-scale ambush. With beehives! Directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Wei Te-Sheng ( Cape No. 7 ) and produced by John Woo (!), Warriors of the Rainbow stars Lin Ching-Tai, Umin Boya and Battle Royale ‘s Masanobu Andō and is in limited release today. More info here . Official synopsis: Wei Te-sheng’s epic film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale reclaims an extraordinary episode from 20th-century history, which is little known, even in Taiwan. Between 1895 and 1945, the island was a Japanese colony inhabited not only by the majority (Han Chinese Immigrants) but also by the remnants of the aboriginal tribes who first settled the mountainous land. In 1930 Mouna Rudo, the leader of the Seediq tribe settled on and around Mount Chilai, forged a coalition with other Seediq tribal leaders and plotted a rebellion against their Japanese colonial masters. It was to begin at a sports day meeting where the assembled tribesmen were to attach and kill the Japanese officials and would then broaden to sieges on police stations and local government offices in the region. The initial uprising took the Japanese by surprise and was almost entirely successful. But the Japanese soon sent in their army to crush the rebellion, using aircraft and poison gas.

Todd Phillips + Duplass Brothers = Mule?

This is… interesting: Warner Bros. and Todd Phillips have brought in writer/directors Mark and Jay Duplass to have a crack at adapting Mule , Tony D’Souza’s novel about a couple who turn to drug trafficking to make it in the recession. Phillips would direct, making the project the first time the Duplasses, who recently drew mixed reviews with Jeff, Who Lives at Home , did not direct one of their scripts. Unless Phillips goes off and spends the next two years on The Hangover Part III , in which case I guess it might be the brothers’ first time directing an adaptation. Wait and see, etc. [ Deadline ]

‘American Idol’ Top Six Battle For The Throne On Queen Night

Hollie Cavanagh rises up with ‘The Climb’ and Joshua Ledet racks up two more standing ovations. By Adam Graham Hollie Cavanagh on “American Idol” Photo: Fox If “American Idol” was decided by whoever received the most standing ovations from the judges, Joshua Ledet would have this year’s competition in the bag. Ledet racked up two more standing Os from the judges on Wednesday’s (April 25) “Idol,” which found the contestants singing two songs apiece: One from Queen, and another of their own choosing. That brought Ledet’s unofficial standing ovation season total to 12 — that figure according to Skylar Laine, who ribbed him backstage for receiving a dozen standing Os over the course of the season. Ledet first got a rise out of the judges with his version of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” which caused Jennifer Lopez to ask, “Is it bad for me to say the Joshua part of the show is my favorite part of the show?” He followed it with a version of India.Arie’s “Ready for Love” — which was sung by Michael Lynche back in “Idol” season nine — which was called “another unbelievable performance” by Randy Jackson. Added an enthusiastic Steven Tyler, “I hope the label finds you a bunch of good songs, man, and you’re off to the moon. I smell the finish line with you.” Hollie Cavanagh received the evening’s other standing ovation from the judges with her second song, “The Climb,” the Miley Cyrus song that seemingly summed up her journey on the show so far. It came after she received so-so marks for her first song, Queen’s “Save Me,” which played into theme of “The Climb” even further. “That’s the Hollie Cavanagh that we love, that’s the one! Hollie is back! Yo!” said Jackson. Added Lopez, “You said it backstage, ‘I gotta step it up,’ and you did! It was perfect.” Steven Tyler’s favorite of the night was Skylar Laine, who opened with “The Show Must Go On” and followed it with Jason Aldean’s “Tattoo’s on This Town.” On the Queen song, Tyler praised her energy and her passion as over-the-top, saying, “the way you hit your notes, for an 18-year-old? Oh my God. That was fabulous.” Lopez said she got “goosies” from Laine, while Jackson dubbed himself a “ginormous” fan of the Mississippi singer. Jessica Sanchez kicked off the show with “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was shot in black and white while a chorus of Sanchez heads backed her on the oval “Idol” video screen at the back of the stage. For her second song, Sanchez sent a shout-out to her dad, singing a touching version of Luther Vandross’ “Dance With My Father.” Lopez told Sanchez she expected more energy from her during “Rhapsody,” but said her “Dance With My Father” was “the best I’ve ever heard that song sang.” Meanwhile, Jackson summed up her two performances by saying, “every time you get up and sing, you know what’s wrong with it? Absolutely nothing!” Phillip Phillips, who has battled Dave Matthews comparisons from fans all season, seemingly got away from the Matthews talk with his first song, a fun, spirited take on “Fat Bottomed Girls.” “People say that you remind them of Dave Matthews, that didn’t remind me of Dave Matthews at all. That was something totally different,” Lopez said, invoking Matthews name out loud for the first time this season. “That’s the mark of a great singer for me.” And how did Phillip Squared follow it up? With a performance of Dave Matthews’ “The Stone,” on which he sounded like a direct clone of Matthews. Lopez was not pleased, dismissing the song “obscure” and “artsy,” and worrying it would get him voted off the show. Jackson, for his part, admired Phillips’ sticking to his guns. “Die, sink or swim, Phil Phillips will always be Phil Phillips,” he said. “I love that.” Elise Testone took on Queen’s “I Want It All” early and followed it with Jimi Hendrix’s “Bold as Love.” The first song got high marks, though the latter “wasn’t the right song for this time in the competition,” Jackson told her, criticizing her for “boxing” with the song, and saying Hendrix sang “about 1/25 of what you sang” in his original. J. Lo had the opposite reaction. Although she said she wasn’t familiar with the original, “you slayed that song so hard, it didn’t even matter,” she said. Wednesday’s show opened with the Top Six performing a medley of Queen songs, backed by Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor. Thursday’s show will feature performances by Katy Perry and 10th season “Idol” contestant Stefano Langone, and one of the six remaining contestants will be sent home. NY Jets CB Antonio “I Got 10 Kids By 8 Baby Mamas” Cromartie Adds A New Bundle Of Joy To His Starting Lineup, Reality Show Possibly In The Works

NY Jets CB Antonio Cromartie Welcomes 10th Child We hope this guy can remember all his kids’ names this time around. SMH! Fix the scoreboard: Now it’s 10 kids from eight women in six states. Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, 27, recently had his second child with wife Terricka, making 10 — one short of a football squad. Their baby boy, Jagger, joins sister Jurzie — and eight half-siblings from Cromartie baby mamas across the country. But the happy occasion is mixed with turmoil. His far-flung fatherhood has intrigued a TV production company that wants to create a reality show about the clan “trying to co-exist as a modern family,” a source told The Post. Most of the moms want to do the show, but “Cro” says no. The baby mamas he left behind have banded together so their kids can bond with their brothers and sisters in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and New Jersey. The single women can use the extra money to help raise their kids, but they also think it’s important “to document their journey,” the source said. “They want Antonio’s support.” Cromartie has deflected the plan, blocking any filming of his offspring. It’s not the kind of spotlight sought by Cromartie, who famously fumbled the names of his brood on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” in 2010 — and even forgot to count one kid. Once busy playing the field, the fertile footballer has angered his first baby mama by wresting custody of their son, Alonzo, now 7. “He’s supposedly a role model, but he’s not doing what he should be doing as a father, or as a man,” said mom Rosemita Pierre, of Tallahassee, Fla. Cromartie defies a court order that allows her to speak with her son three times a week, she charged. “They don’t answer the phone,” said Pierre, who’s called the cops in Randolph, NJ, to knock on Cromartie’s door. “It’s a hurtful situation — like he’s trying to erase me.” Pierre, who gets no child support from Cromartie, favors the TV show because she wants her son to know all his half-siblings. So does Ryan Ross, a hotel employee in Los Angeles, who met Cromartie at a San Diego nightclub, dated him about six months, and delivered his fifth child, son Tyler Jae, now 4. Ross first encountered another Cromartie baby mama when she brought newborn Tyler to visit the former-San Diego Charger at his apartment. She ran into Latoya Burley, of Houston, Texas, who was there visiting with daughter Deyjah, her first of two with Cromartie. They hit it off. Ross now stays in touch with several other Cro baby mamas. “We’re not catty women. We have a close, tight-knit friendship and understand what each other’s going through. We reach out to share news about the kids, to talk, to vent,” she said. As for Cromartie, she said, “We co-exist for the sake of my son.” Cromartie — who signed a four-year, $32 million contract last fall — pays more than $3,500 a month to each baby mama, except Pierre. He was sacked as a womanizer and cad by Rhonda Patterson, a corporate lawyer and ex-Miss Black North Carolina. She wrote a memoir, “Love, Intercepted,” telling how Cromartie wooed her, then canceled their wedding a week before the event and dumped her six months pregnant. Soon after, she learned Cromartie wed Terricka Cason, a model with a child from a prior relationship. Patterson, whose daughter, London, 3, “is the joy of my life,’’ wants no more to do with the jilting Jet. “That chapter for me has completely closed — talking about Antonio, thinking about Antonio, even caring what’s going on in his personal life,” she said. But, she added, “I wish him the best. Any time a baby is born, it’s a blessing.” Now that sounds like one helluva reality show! But real talk, dude needs to make sure he’s taking care of all of his kids…including the first one. He made his bed and now he has to lay in it. Source More On Bossip! "Somebody That I Used to Know": Who Did it Better, American Idol or Glee?

Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” was apparently the song of the week on Fox. Two hit shows on the network featured covers of it in as many nights! Tuesday, on Glee , Matt Bomer’s guest appearance as the older brother of Darren Criss’ character featured a scene in which the two duet on the catchy track. While it was something of an odd choice to have brothers singing this song, as its lyrics imply a breakup between a couple, the guys absolutely killed. Wednesday, on American Idol’s top seven performance show, Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone tag-teamed it. Which cover was better? Watch both and vote below: Darren Criss and Matt Bomer – Somebody That I Used to Know (Glee) Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone – Somebody That I Used to Know (American Idol) Which show’s cover of “Somebody That I Used to Know” was best?
