‘Hangover Part II’ Trailer Drops Next Week, Todd Phillips Says

‘It’s truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,’ director tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms in “The Hangover” Photo: Warner Bros. After the record-breaking success of “The Hangover” and the endless speculation about where the sequel would take place, after the casting gossip and the Mel Gibson controversy , after the first photos and the behind-the-scenes set visit, we’re about to get our first peek at actual footage from “The Hangover Part II.” “We have a teaser trailer that I just finished color for yesterday night, so that’ll come out next week,” Todd Phillips told MTV News on Friday (February 18) while promoting the DVD release of “Due Date.” “And I think it comes out in theaters on ‘Hall Pass,’ which should be next Friday.” It can’t come soon enough. The film hits theaters May 26, and up until now, official glimpses at the production have been few and far between. The only reason for the dearth of Warner Bros.-sanctioned material, though, is that Phillips and friends didn’t wrap production on the flick that long ago. “We’ve had, like, one photo out, and that’s just because we finished shooting on New Year’s Day, and the movie comes out on Memorial Day,” the writer/director said. “It’s really just a crazy-tight schedule.” While Phillips wouldn’t dish details about what we’ll actually see in the teaser, he did emphasize that fans should temper their expectations: The footage will hardly offer a comprehensive dive into what the film is all about. “It’s truly a teaser, so it might end up frustrating more than solving questions,” he told us. “I love it. It’s a true tease, if that makes sense. It’s just one of those things that’s gonna make you go, ‘OK, let’s see what more they have.’ It’s to pique interest and to remind people what’s coming down the pike.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Hangover’ Director Todd Phillips Developing John Belushi Biopic

Original ‘Saturday Night Live’ castmember died of a drug overdose in 1982. By Eric Ditzian Todd Phillips Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Filmmaker Todd Phillips has made a career of documenting the modern man-child’s debauchery: Will Ferrell’s beer-bong-sucking nice guy in “Old School,” Owen Wilson’s stoner-cop in “Starsky & Hutch,” and basically the entire cast of the booze-sodden “Hangover.” Now Phillips is planning to document the travails of another debaucherous funnyman. But this time, it’s a true story, and we should expect a dose of tragedy to be mixed in with the drug-addled madness. Phillips and screenwriter Steven Conrad (“The Pursuit of Happyness”) are developing a biopic based on the life of John Belushi, following Warner Bros.’ acquisition of the comedian’s life-story rights from his estate, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Conrad is set to pen the script, with Phillips onboard as a producer but not yet committed to directing the project. Belushi was an original “Saturday Night Live” castmember, after getting his start with the Second City comedy group. He appeared on “SNL” from 1975 until 1979, leaving a year after the success of “Animal House” to pursue a full-time career in Hollywood. He appeared in “The Blues Brothers” in 1980, as well as a few other films. In 1982, at the age of 33, Belushi died of a drug overdose and was found in a hotel room at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. Phillips’ project marks the latest effort to capture Belushi’s life on camera. In 1989, Michael Chiklis starred as Belushi in “Wired,” based on a biography that was widely condemned by the actor’s family and friends when it was released. In a 2002 TV-movie about “SNL” castmate Gilda Radner, Eric Siegel portrayed Belushi. And in a 2005 TV movie about TV show “Mork & Mindy,” Tyler Labine appeared as the comedian. Who might play the role this time around? THR drops names like frequent Phillips’ collaborator Zach Galifianakis, Jack Black, Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen. Who do you think should play the role of John Belushi? Tell us in the comments. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Hangover’ Director Promises To Bring Back Mike Tyson For Round Two

‘I’ve got to find something for him, because he’s been texting me,’ Todd Phillips says of Iron Mike. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Last summer’s biggest comedy (and six-time MTV Movie Awards nominee ) “The Hangover” knocked out audiences like an uppercut from a heavyweight champion. And it stands to reason that director Todd Phillips would bring back the first film’s actual champ, Mike Tyson, for more sparring with co-stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha in the sequel. Saturday night at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards, Phillips told MTV News that he’s looking for a part that Tyson can play in “The Hangover 2.” “I’ve got to find something for him, because he’s been texting me,” Phillips said. “I’ve got to figure it out. We’re going to find something for Mike.” The director also explained that the focus of the sequel won’t shift a lot from the first film, although some new characters will be introduced. “It’s expanding a bit, obviously,” he said. “There’s new people to be introduced. But the core cast is still who it’s about.” Since the completion of “The Hangover,” Phillips reunited with Galifianakis for a comedy called “Due Date,” which also Robert Downey Jr. Phillips said that and Downey commiserated about the challenges of following up a successful film with a satisfying sequel. “I became really close with Robert Downey, and he, of course, did ‘Iron Man 2,’ and he’s doing ‘Sherlock 2,’ ” Phillips said. “And when we were doing ‘Due Date,’ he talked to me a lot about the pressure you feel when you’re shooting that sequel, especially [for] something as beloved as ‘The Hangover’ was and, of course, as ‘Iron Man’ was.” Although audiences will enter the sequel with a wealth of expectations, Phillips said there’s actually something exciting about that pressure. “I think there’s another part of it which is really exciting — [which is] when you’re doing a comedy, can we do it again?” he explained. ” ‘The Hangover’ really worked because there were so many surprises, and it’s like, can we capture that again? So I’m kind of excited about it.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
