Max B Recalls Making A Wave Called Yes Tape While On Trial

While the New York MC awaits his appeal of a decades-long prison sentence for manslaughter and various other charges, his music is still being heard. Amalgam Digital recently released a mixtape by the spitter and the upstart Young Riot. “That’s me and my young god, Young Riot,” Max said on the phone from the New Jersey State Penitentiary. “He’s holding it down while I’m up in the spot. We got a few treats on there. I remember the night we did them. [The executives at Amalgam] drove me out to Boston, 2 in the morning. I went out there and drank a 60 of Hennessey and knocked out the whole tape. Knocked the tape out in one night. That’s what professionals do. This is when I was going to trial. They came and got me on a Friday or Saturday, I had to be back on Sunday, Monday morning to go back to court. It was a real busy week. I was really busy on trial. For the music to come out that good while I was on trial, that was surprising to me. That just let me know, no matter how long I’m gone from the game, I’m still a natural. I still can make quality work. I’mma still be Biggavelli.” Amalgam is going to let A Wave Called Yes rock for the summer then drop Max’s solo LP, Vigilante Season. B recently won a court case to be freed from his contract with Jim Jones, who discovered him. “We recorded 40 songs in three weeks,” Max said of his dealings with Amalgam last year. At the time, he was still contractually bound to Jones and did not know if the music would be allowed to be released. “Nonstop in the summertime. Vigilante was real special to me. It was like they giving me a shot. Even if it wasn’t coming out, they gave me the feel of just going to do the album. I was doing it my way.” As for when Max will be free to record again, he says it’s in God’s hands now. The rapper’s appeal could take between 18 months and three years to be resolved. If he loses that appeal, it could be an additional three years before he can appeal again. Max was sentenced to 75 years in prison in September 2009 for conspiracy, robbery, manslaughter and a myriad of other crimes. The jurors in the case felt there was ample evidence to convict him of the 2005 robbery of two men in a Fort Lee, New Jersey, hotel room. One of the men was shot and killed. Max wasn’t at the scene of the crime, but the prosecutors built their case with him as the mastermind. Max still denies being involved. His stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam was also convicted in the matter, and Max’s former girlfriend Gina Conway was involved as well but eventually testified against the men. Leerdam is serving time along with Max. “I always kinda had that problem with finding the right people,” Max said of the choices that led him to prison, right as he appeared to be on the verge of mainstream recognition. “People always say you gotta surround yourself with people who have your best interests in mind. I always found that hard to do, because when you’re in my situation, everybody acts like they got your best interests, but they don’t. We know who got your best interests — your mother, your father, your kid’s mother, whatever. Your immediate family. But you can’t have them on the road with you every day. You gotta be around your n—as. “You gotta pick them carefully,” he added. “I always had a problem with picking the right people I surround myself with. That’s always been my downfall, ever since I was a little kid. That’s something I gotta learn off experience. This is definitely an experience. The toughest sh– I been through in my life. You already know when I beat this, it’s gonna be beautiful. I just can’t wait. That’s the only thing keeping me going. Me saying [to myself], ‘Max, when you beat this, it’s gonna be a whole new lane out there for you.’ Me being able to attack this sh– right and make a living for my mother and my kids and be a good productive [citizen] in society. Max B Talks From Jail About Appealing 75-Year Sentence: ‘I’ll Be Home’

‘I’m not worried about the sentence, because I’m not doing that time,’ he tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid Max B and French Montana Photo: MTV News As it stands right now, Max B is facing 75 years in prison after he was convicted of manslaughter, aggravated assault, robbery, kidnapping, possession of a weapon and conspiracy in 2009. But the New York MC said he’s staying as positive as possible and operating under the radar. When MTV News got him on the phone Monday (June 28) from New Jersey State Penitentiary in Trenton, he explained why he recently fired his trial lawyer, Gerald M. Saluti. “Anytime you lose trial, most of the times, on most occasions, people will fire their trial lawyer,” he said. “You would need to do something like that. For those who’s not familiar with legal terms, it’s called ineffective assistance of counsel. You would have to do that. That’s when your lawyer fails to do his obligated duties. I ain’t supposed to be in here in the first place. My charges were excessive. I was never at the scene of the crime. It’s very insufficient. Just off that alone, I’ll be back. It ain’t about me being convicted. It’s about: Can this conviction stand up in an appellate court? If they deny me on this one, then I’mma do an interview and tell the people, ‘Don’t wait up on me.’ It’s gonna be about four, five, six years later than that.” Max (born Charlie Wingate) was convicted of masterminding the robbery of David Taylor and Allan Plowden. The pair was set up by Max’s former girlfriend Gina Conway, who testified for the prosecution in the trial in exchange for a lighter sentence. Jurors felt that there was enough evidence to convict Max’s stepbrother Kelvin Leerdam of being the gunman and murderer of Taylor. Although Max wasn’t at the scene, jurors handed down a guilty verdict to him as well. Max was sentenced to 75 years in prison in September, but he said the term was reduced to 40. The prosecutor in the case had not returned MTV News’ calls for comment as of press time. “The sentence wasn’t really nothing,” Max said. “It was the ‘guilty’ that was more effective. The part when the jurors say ‘guilty.’ That hurts more than the sentence itself. At that time, I’m coming to court every day. I got the cameras on me. I got my girls waiting outside. I got French [Montana] and them n—as in the parking lot. My Beamer is parked in the lot. My jewelry is on. But now, when they say I’m guilty, I gotta take off my watch. I gotta take off my chain. I gotta pass it off. I pass off my car keys, my apartment keys, and I gotta walk to the back. I can’t walk out that gate. I gotta walk to the back and get locked up. That’s the part that hurt me the most. The sentence, by the time I got to that point, I didn’t hear none of that. I was already deaf to that sh–. My focus was already, ‘All right, we trying to get back.’ I’m not worried about the sentence, because I’m not doing that time. That’s not a number to me. They could’ve gave me a billion years, that sh– is not gonna stand up. That has to stand up in an appellate court. Now if [an appeals court] say, ‘Charlie Wingate, we found no error, you can’t come home’ — once I exhaust all my remedies, that’s different. But it’s still early. I’m on my direct appeal. I’ll be home.” It could be quite some time. Max said, realistically, he’ll have to do at least another year and a half in jail. “They should feel grateful. They should be thankful they got another chance,” Max said of his peers, such as Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane and T.I., who were all sentenced to around a year in prison. “Even though I got another chance, it might not come as easy and quick. My sh– might take up to three years for me to get outta here. It might be 18 months. But that’s just the worst-case scenario. The only person I felt really caught a rough deal was Remy [Ma] . Our situations was similar, as far as the lawyer and stuff go. [Remy] was working and not really focusing on the case at hand. Same thing with me. I was working, not focusing on the case at hand that mattered. And the end, when I had to go in that courtroom, I wasn’t prepared. I just let my lawyer do whatever. That’s a lesson. You got be on top of lawyers, you gotta do your own studying when you get situations like that. You can’t put your faith in his hands. They’re only human. Humans disappoint people. You gotta put your faith in God. You gotta work hard. It’s gonna be all right.” In the meantime, Max’s work will be heard. He recorded dozens of tracks before going to prison, and the music will be brought to the fans by the label Amalgam Digital. The company just put out the Mixtape A Wave Called Yes, which features Max and his rap accomplice Young Riot. Max’s next solo LP, Vigilante Season, is set to drop later this fall. Paul McCartney, Pearl Jam, Stevie Wonder Shine At Hard Rock Festival In London

By Matt Elias Paul McCartney performs at Hard Rock Calling 2010 Photo: Andy Paradise This past weekend was one of the warmest on record in London, and the hottest ticket in town was the Hard Rock Calling festival in Hyde Park. The three-day festival boasted headliners Pearl Jam , Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney , with a mix of rock and pop acts rounding out the bill, including Ben Harper and Relentless7, the Gaslight Anthem, Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae and Elvis Costello. It was the headliners who stole the show each night, and on Friday Pearl Jam had the honor of closing out the first night’s festivities. Eddie Vedder hit the stage prior to PJ’s set, joining Harper and his band for a rousing rendition of Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure.” By 8 p.m. the estimated 55,000 in attendance packed the grounds when Pearl Jam kicked off their two-hour set with “Given to Fly.” The energy was massive from the get-go, with fists pumping and women sitting atop shoulders throughout the crowd (a few hedonistic ones popped their tops off for the JumboTron). After tearing through the first few songs, Vedder addressed the crowd, which stretched all the way back to the entrance. Swigging from a bottle of wine, he said, “It feels incredibly good to be here. Somehow over the years we’ve been given the license to make as much f—in’ noise as possible.” But concerned for the crushing crowd, he asked all 55,000 to take three steps backwards. The energy continued with “Once” and “World Wide Suicide” until Pearl Jam slowed things down with a crowd sing-along, “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town.” But they picked up the pace just a few songs later with “Even Flow” as fans sang the chorus even louder than the stage’s massive speakers. Guitarist Mike McCready wowed fans by playing his guitar solo behind his head. PJ then upped the ante, treating fans to a new song called “Of the Earth.” Vedder noted that it had never been recorded and that if things went well it would end up on the next album. He then joked that it was like auditioning for “American Idol.” Judging by the crowd’s approval, the upbeat song was a success. The band capped off the night with “Better Man,” an emotional rendition of “Just Breathe” and an encore of “Go” and “Alive,” the last of which was the loudest sing-along of the night. Saturday, though just as crowded as Friday, was a much mellower day, with Corinne Bailey Rae’s sultry sounds and Jamiroquai’s funky tunes leading into Stevie Wonder’s headlining set. Jam’s frontman Jay Kay (wearing what could be described as an offensive Native American headdress) called Stevie “the Master.” He urged fans to give Wonder a proper English welcome, and they did when the legend finally hit the stage. Not known for being punctual, Wonder only kept fans waiting 15 minutes for his scheduled set. Hyde Park enforces a 10:15 p.m. curfew, so Stevie was just barely able to squeeze in his two-hour set. But he squeezed in a lot, playing songs that spanned his massive 50-year catalogue. Wonder hit the stage with a gleaming white keytar and got the crowd involved instantly with the first of many call and responses. The enthusiasm was mutual, as Stevie got down on the ground and jammed on his keytar while he was on his back. By the second song, “Master Blaster,” he had the crowd dancing. Amy Winehouse was spotted on the side of the stage during Wonder’s set, sparking rumors that she would join him onstage. That never happened, but his two hours, a mix of comedic and poignant moments, were full enough without any guest appearances. At one point Stevie freestyled, “We love you, Michael Jackson. We’ll see you when you get to heaven,” and later he covered MJ’s “Human Nature,” a touching moment one year after the King of Pop’s death. The set closed out with rousing renditions of “Sir Duke”, a Temptations cover of “My Girl” that lead right into “Isn’t She Lovely”, “My Cherie Amour” and “Superstition”. From one legend to the next, Sunday saw the headlining set of Sir Paul McCartney. Backstage was abuzz in celebrity activity, as the Jonas Brothers, Kings of Leon, Kate Beckinsale and Gwyneth Paltrow were all on hand for Macca’s set. Sir Paul hit the stage promptly at 7:30 p.m., dressed in black from head to toe. It was a brave wardrobe choice as temperatures hit 90 degrees that day. After the first couple of tunes, McCartney addressed the crowd. He declared, “Good evening, Hyde Park. Gotta feelin’ we’re gonna have a rockin’ good time tonight!” Then he took a moment to soak it all in before launching into the Beatles classic “All My Loving,” an instant sing-along. McCartney was a delight, sharing jovial banter with the crowd between songs. For most of the tunes, which, you guessed it, spanned his entire catalogue, Paul took time to explain their origins. It was almost like an episode of VH1 “Storytellers” and felt like an intimate club show, despite the 50,000 in attendance. McCartney recalled seeing Jimi Hendrix cover “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” just days after its release. He discussed songs he’d written for his late wife, Linda, and fellow Beatle John Lennon. After every song, he gave a heartfelt “Thank you” and a bow, as if each was his last. Of all those songs, it’s hard to single out moments, but highlights came toward the end of the set with a slew of classics: “Let It Be,” “Live and Let Die” (with a huge fireworks display) and “Hey Jude,” delivered with boisterous “na na na nas” from the crowd. McCartney returned with two encores that pushed the show well into three amazing hours, far exceeding the 10:15 curfew (but that’s something you can get away with when you’ve been knighted). Songs included “Get Back,” “Helter Skelter” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” capping off a great weekend of headlining performances as well as the end of Sir Paul’s worldwide tour. Moments after McCartney exited the stage, an ecstatic Joe and Nick Jonas shared their highlights of the show. Nick told MTV News, “My favorite song? Obviously ‘Hey Jude’ comes first always.” The brothers agreed that “Blackbird” was a second favorite, and Nick admitted to recording it on his phone. In “Ghost,” the rocker sticks up for scorned girlfriends everywhere as she harasses her ex after catching him with another lady. True to the song’s title, Dobson haunts her bad-boy boo, popping up everywhere from the ceiling of his bedroom to the front seat of his ride. “Ghost” was directed by Alan Ferguson, who has shot videos for the likes of Katy Perry and Fall Out Boy. Dobson gushed to MTV News that the director is “unbelievable and super talented” and that she had wanted to work with him for a while. The two were apparently completely in sync when it came to certain scenes in the video — like the one where she’s haranguing her ex from above. “Alan Ferguson called me and we were talking about it on the phone. I was like, ‘I see myself upside down.’ And he was like, ‘That’s crazy, ’cause I saw you upside down in my head too,’ ” Dobson said. Dobson also said the heat really got turned up when she filmed in front a blazing mattress . “There’s a scene where I’m standing in front of a burning bed. It was really burning — it wasn’t a green screen. I was like, ‘I’m not gonna do this!’ and I hear [the director] going, ‘Get in front of the bed!’ “she recalled. “I didn’t want to do it but I did it. I didn’t, you know, get set on fire — which is important!” Dobson hasn’t dropped an album since her self-titled 2003 debut. She chalked up the break to the fact that she spent the last few years making sure that her latest effort, Joy , is just right. “It took so long because I wanted to make it perfect,” said Dobson. “I’m one of those people that I make a song … then I write another song and then I’m like, ‘But this song is so much better than this song,’ and then I kind of ditch that song. Fox and another one with Ving Rhames, he opened a clothing store in his native Los Angeles, appears on the new “Def Jam Rapstar” video game, has a tour coming and still has more mixtapes and a debut album on deck for October. “My album, it ain’t got no wrinkles in it,” Nip said recently in New York about his debut, South Central State of Mind. “From the sonic quality of it, every verse, every hook, to the features, to the production. Ain’t no excuses for the album.” Nipsey’s candidacy for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” comes from his grind in the streets. Last year, he dropped a trilogy of mixtapes called Bullets Ain’t Got No Names, which introduced him and immediately captivated fans. His work in the ‘hood garnered him co-signs by the likes of Snoop Dogg and the Game, both of whom he toured with. Drake also appeared on the potent Hussle underground smash “Killer.” The momentum has made Nip one of the leaders of the new wave of West Coast MCs, also including Fashawn and Jay Rock. “Nipsey, he brings the real to the table,” said Rock, who will be teaming up with Nip for a duet mixtape called Red and Blue Make Green. “He brings that struggle. He’s telling you his story. Nipsey is bringing a story as a whole package, as well as he’s bringing real music. Reality rap.” “You gonna be hard-pressed to come to L.A. and not hear a car playing Jay Rock music, playing Nipsey Hussle right now,” Nip said. “It’s gonna be almost impossible. They say it starts in your backyard. I feel we putting forth that legwork. We really took our city without the traditional outlet, the Dr. Dre, the Snoop Dogg, the Death Row. That’s not to take anything from them, but we wasn’t really waiting. We kinda like stood on our own foundation of hard work. That’s the brand that the new breed of West Coast artists gonna bring to the table. Self-made. Off the top!” Besides the authenticity of his music, Nip’s appeal lies in his laid-back delivery. You look at him or hear his music and you see your homie from around the way. Nip knows that all the love in the streets is eventually going to have to translate in his official releases. He just dropped the single “Feelin’ Myself (I’m So Fresh)” with Lloyd and has South Central State of Mind in cook-up mode right now. J.R. Rotem, Scott Storch, Houston’s Mr. Lee, Grammy winners Play-N-Skillz, Terrence Martin and Nip’s live band, 1500 or Nothin’, produced on the album thus far. Trey Songz and Sean Kingston are among the guest performers. “Regardless of people’s opinion about it, the dominant culture in L.A. is gang-banging,” Nipsey, a Crip, said about “Blue Laces,” a song from his LP. “Us being young dudes in our 20s, we not the cause of that. We was born into this culture. We reacted to it from the perspective of survival. I feel like that record, ‘Blue Laces,’ speaks on the realness of that culture. We not the cause of this. This is what led us into that mentality.” Nip said South Central State of Mind speaks to young Angelinos. “I’m kinda revolving around that concept on a lot of records on that album,” he said. “On the state of mind in growing up in L.A. Whether you from Compton, Watts, Long Beach, the east side, west side, it’s a state of mind that’s way more powerful than an individual. I might feel a certain way personally, but this is what it is. “I might feel like one of my dudes is a Blood, one of my dudes is from Hoover. So me, personally, this is my homeboy and I got love for him,” he added. “But I’m from the 60s, and it’s a politic that goes with that. I just feel like I revolved around that concept, the cause of this mind state. I want to impact the culture with the project and raise the consciousness of the people that’s being affected by this. And bring a human element to what this is about and stop people from looking at us like we just mindless killers and we glorifying this type of life. We really striving for change from within. We ain’t gonna go Hollywood with it and get a record deal and start blasting where we come from, but at the same time, we do wanna see change. Khloe took part in the squad’s celebratory parade around Los Angeles this week, blogging : “Never in a million years did I anticipate it would be as crazy as it was, I was seriously in shock! The fan support was so overwhelming in the greatest way!” Khloe also bought her husband a $400,000 Rolls Royce for winning the championship, something every athlete with a $33 million contract needs. Isn’t it nice to see Kardashian using the money she’s earned – from reading scripts and posing for photos – in such a meaningful way? Hopefully, Ty Lawson convinces Kim Kardashian to have sex with him this off-season and the Denver Nuggets win it all next year.

The Hills Recap: Make Up to Throw Up

Somebody please explain this one to us, if you don’t mind. At what point did Justin-Bobby become more than a transient figure, but a guy The Hills is based around, with Kristin Cavallari and Audrina Patridge smitten? What is the appeal of this guy? What woman doesn’t love a mysterious, shady individual morally opposed to haircuts, bathing, working or speaking coherently? It is useless to resist. Audrina Patridge proved again that she cannot quit him, casting Ryan Cabrera aside. Meanwhile, Kristin brought the ruckus to that psycho b!tch Allie Lutz. Here’s THG’s recap of Tuesday’s The Hills , “Make Up to Break Up” … FEEL THE MAGIC: A scene straight out of a Lifetime film . Audrina has weighed the pros and cons with Ryan, and it’s not gonna work. We’re imagining her writing an actual list. Pros: Nice, rich. Cons: Hair? Minus 4 . Kristin and Lo are bummed about Audrina’s feelings toward Ryan. Plus 5 , because they know he deserves better and that Justin-Bobby is a waste of space. From the moment Brody Jenner arrives at the club, Kristin and he flirt relentlessly. Hot. Plus 3 , because you might as well cue the adult film soundtrack now. Sleazy T sighting! Plus 2 . Brody says McKaela Line is crazy for bringing Allie Lutz around. Minus 8 , because McKaela Line and her connection to the crew are clearly fabricated by MTV. Allie spots Kristin across the club and tries to make amends, but Kristin calls her and their awesomely snarky confrontation almost gets physical. Plus 12 . BITCH PLEASE: Kristin Cavallari will bring it, Allie Lutz. Step. Away . Kristin shows up at Smashbox to meet Lo for lunch and is fake surprised to see McKaela there. Wow, can you BELIEVE the coincidental run-ins on this show? Plus 7 . Ryan Cabrera asks Audrina why she left his show early and she says it’s just too hard for her to hear him sing, ’cause the feelings just aren’t there. Weak. Minus 8 . No Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. Again. Minus 10 . Kristin invites Justin to Audrina’s b-day party for reasons unknown. Minus 5 . Weren’t these two supposedly together at the end of last season? That fizzled fast. Audrina and Stephanie talk about the difficulties of relationships and the importance of honesty … except when faking every single scene for a reality show. Plus 3 . Justin-Bobby tells Audrina he’s happy where the two of them are now. Sitting at THG World Headquarters writing this, we wish we could say the same. Minus 5 . TOTAL: -8 . SEASON: -14 .
