A group of Mrs. America contestants’ complaints of racism about the pageant CEO and co-founder may open the floodgates for more allegations to come in the future. The complaints already have re-opened the door to the racist history of beauty pageants. RELATED: Beauty Queen Stoned To Death For Being In Pageant Black women have historically been shut out of pageants and forced to create their own contests. Members of this same group found themselves shut down again, saying that David Marmel made disparaging comments about African-Americans at the Mrs. America competition in Las Vegas in August. Four contestants — three Black and one white — called out Marmel for racist remarks that included him having repeatedly hurled the N-word. Marmel also allegedly said that Black women “need to stop having so many babies,” the women said during a press conference Monday. His other alleged offenses included saying that Black men were “drug dealers, incarcerated in jail, on welfare and killing each other.” Mrs. Delaware Kimberly Phillips , Mrs. New Jersey Crissy Timpson , Mrs. Ohio Jeri Ward and Mrs. Missouri Brandy Palacios made clear their feelings, with the help of high-profile women’s rights lawyer Gloria Allred , USA Today reported. Four former Mrs. America contestants say the pageant's co-founder and president said that black women “need to stop having so many babies” and black men “need to stop shooting each other.” https://t.co/IVWf89gXJx — USA TODAY (@USATODAY) October 16, 2018 Adding insult to injury, the women also called out Marmel for allegedly having compared his skin tone to the Black contestants. The women reportedly don’t plan to file a lawsuit. Instead, they want an apology from Marmel and equal treatment for contestants. However, a lawsuit would be a likely move based on the claims and the painful history of racism in beauty pageants. It was 50 years ago that protesters and feminists took on the Miss America pageant to fight for women for the first time since the pageant’s creation in 1921, according to the Smithsonian . They were sick and tired of the pageant’s vain and oppressive standards of judging women on their appearance and white skin: “Rule 7″ stated that Miss America contestants had to be “of good health and of the white race” before it was thrown out in 1940. At the time of the protest in 1968, a Black woman had not been crowned winner nor invited to participate in the pageant. Black women didn’t wait for an invite; they created their own pageants. The first-ever Miss Black America pageant was born as a result of the mainstream pageant blackout that same year as the protest. The inaugural pageant celebrated Blackness as beautiful — a message that still gets lost in translation in those same spaces today. The Mrs. American contestants’ stories about Marmel indicated that some mainstream pageants were still not as inclusive as needed. P eople across the globe were having a collective moment of raising awareness about the hunger crisis on Tuesday, which marked World Food Day. Hunger, inextricably linked to poverty, disproportionally affects African-Americans, motivating many Black folks to find practical ways to fight to end the crisis. RELATED: NYC Public School System Battles Childhood Hunger With Free Lunch To All Students Oprah Winfrey , who has long used her influence and celebrity status to call attention to human rights issues such as hunger, volunteered at the Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati last month. The mogul partnered with retail company Kroger to attack hunger, WKRC , a CBS and CW affiliate, reported. “Every step to zero hunger in this country, this city, this world is a step in the right direction,” Winfrey said at the time, spotlighting an issue that the United Nations said it hoped to completely eradicate by 2030. The world produces enough food to feed everyone, yet 1 person in 9 suffers from chronic hunger. On Tuesday's World Food Day, learn how you can support #ZeroHunger by 2030: https://t.co/hpcIGprGLG #GlobalGoals pic.twitter.com/EqFvtYFW5o — United Nations (@UN) October 16, 2018 The crisis hits home for many people nationwide, but for African-Americans, it’s been even worse. Black people are more than twice as likely to face hunger, according to Feeding America . That was widely connected to high poverty rates among Blacks — more than twice that of white, non-Hispanic households in 2017. With such a high poverty rate, it is no wonder why African Americans are trying to fight back. Volunteers, farmers, activists and celebrities alike are all using their power to make a difference to combat hunger. For instance, Chance the Rapper has played a role in trying to combat hunger in his native Chicago. The lyricist had teamed up with Lyft to donate $1 million to the city’s schools , and his gift can go a long way in helping provide breakfast and lunch for hungry students. T.I. also recently decided to pay for a year’s worth of school lunches for a teenager in Florida. A high school had reportedly denied food to the teen, Danielle Aiken because she was 15 cents short in August. Perhaps other rappers will also donate money for institutions in their home cities and help students afford school meals. The National School Lunch Program allows for 100,000 schools to serve school lunches to 30 million students each day. The program provides 20 million free lunches, 2 million reduced-price lunches in which students pay $0.40 each and 8 million full price lunches, according to the School Nutrition Association . If more people support families struggling to provide meals for their school-age children and global hunger efforts, then the UN’s goal of ending hunger in just 12 years could come true. Via | HipHopDX CHICAGO, IL – After appearing to bury the hatchet with Kanye following a long series of public criticisms of his subversive takes on everything — more or less — Uncle Snoop Dogg took to Instagram on October 14 to clown ‘Ye over a (late to the party) interpretation of Drake’s “In My Feelings.” “I just found out who Kiki was, [she] is your bitch. That’s why you’re so mad,” Snoop taunted, having seemingly just stumbled on the popular fan theory that Drake was referencing Kim Kardashian on the song. RODRIGO ARANGUA/AFP/Getty Images Friends And Family Are Left In Shock A woman in Panama City met a tragic end when she tried to take a selfie on a balcony. According to Metro , 44-year-old Sandra Manuela Da Costa Macedo was trying to take a selfie on the 27th-floor balcony of a building last Friday. Police sources say a gust of wind must have knocked Macedo off balance and she fell to her death with her selfie stick still in hand. Nearby, construction workers filmed the whole incident, worried that Macedo would fall during her photo session. You can check out the distressing video they filmed here . Macedo, who is said to be a teacher and mom of two, had just moved to Panama City from Portugal. Friends and acquaintances posted tributes to her online when news hit of her tragic death. Erick Alzate, a witness who lives on the same block the incident took place, gave more insight into the tragedy. “She had been taking selfies for a couple of minutes and construction workers on a block opposite were shouting to her to be careful,” said Alzate. “She decided to sit on the railing for the last selfie and that’s when she went over the edge.” Many of the reactions on social media ranged from condolences to disappointment, according to Metro . Such a stupid way to die,” while a Jose Guillermo wrote, “Peace for her soul and strength for her family.” Maria del Carmen wrote, “Such a tragedy that such a beautiful lady like you loses their life this way. My sincere condolences for your loved ones.” After Macedo’s tragic incident, Panama’s Fire Service posted a warning on its official Twitter page which said, “Don’t risk your life for a selfie. It’s more important to lose a minute in life than your life in a minute.”
Source: Al Bello / Getty The parents of a young women who believe R. Kelly has brainwashed their daughter and is holding her captive have created a hotline for other women who may have fallen victim to the singer. According to Mic , Tim and Jonjelyn Savage have been bombarded with calls from nearly 80 women and parents with their own stories of abuse by the Pied Pier after a 2017 Buzzfeed article was published with accusations against the singer. After time, the Savages noticed a disturbing trend: So many of these callers were afraid to go public. So they created a “R. Kelly abuse hotline” last week to create a safe space for people to come forward, speak their truth and to leave a message going into detail about their allegations against the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer. “One reason I feel that he’s been getting away with a lot of the allegations for the last two decades is because people feel he has money and power and they don’t have the resources to fight him,” Mrs. Savage explained. READ MORE: EXCLUSIVE: Lawyer To Family Whose Daughter Is Allegedly Being Held Captive By R. Kelly Speaks Out About New Song In addition, the Savages hope that this influx of callers will allow for them to build an even stronger case against R. Kelly. “There’s no age limit on being mind-controlled, drugged, brainwashed, there’s no age limit on that,” Mrs. Savage said. “So the more we have more young ladies or even men, or parents that are willing to speak out, the more we think it can help our daughter as well as helping other victims.” As we previously reported , the Savages told Buzzfeed last they haven’t seen their daughter Jocelyn since December 2016 and haven’t spoken to her on the phone since December 2017. Shortly after, Joycelyn told TMZ that her parents’ claims were false and that she willingly stays in a relationship with the singer. As we all know, the Savages claims are not new or rare when it comes to the Grammy winner. For decades R. Kelly has been accused of predatory behavior , especially among African-American women and girls. He is also facing a lawsuit that claims the 51-year-old knowingly transmitted an STD to a women he began dating when she was 19 and he as been accused of cultivating a “sex cult” abusing multiple women. That, and there was that damning documentary on BBC3, R Kelly: Sex, Girls and Videotapes, where former girlfriend Kitty Jones says that Kelly introduced her to a girl whom he had allegedly “trained” since she was 14. “I saw that she was dressed like me, that she was saying the things I’d say and her mannerisms were like mine,” Jones said in the film. “That’s when it clicked in my head that he had been grooming me to become one of his pets. He calls them his pets.” READ MORE: R. Kelly’s ‘I Admit’ Song Is Unhealed Word Vomit We Just Don’t Want R. Kelly has denied all sexual assault, kidnapping and sex cult accusations. This past summer, he released a new song addressing the sexual assault, pedophilia and sex cult allegations that have been circling around him for more than two decades. And while the title of the song, “I Admit” gives off the impression that the Pied Piper has finally come clean about his alleged predatory behavior, it’s quite the opposite. In the 19-minute track, Kelly denies all illegal allegations, going as far as to say that the people accusing him are lying and are only doing so to extort money and ruin his career. He also painted a picture of being a victim of sorts, claiming that he was sexually assaulted as a young child, is basically illiterate and has perhaps battled with drug addiction.
