Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Banks and Colin Farrell also up for Best On-Screen Transformation at Sunday’s show. By Josh Wigler Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. On-screen transformations aren’t purely dominated by Autobots and Decepticons. Actors can undergo their own forms of cinematic overhauls too, from makeup-heavy makeovers to complete 180-degree turns against type to — as the case may be — shocking returns to one’s original form. All of these and more are represented in the Best On-Screen Transformation category at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards . This year’s nominees include the twice-nominated Colin Farrell for his dirtbaggy turn in “Horrible Bosses” and “Hunger Games” favorite Elizabeth Banks’ perfectly pink metamorphosis as the irrepressible Effie Trinket, among others. There’s no shortage of worthy candidates for the Best On-Screen Transformation award, but which nominee will walk away feasting on Golden Popcorn? You can make that choice for yourself by voting over at MovieAwards.MTV.com — but first, let’s re-examine each of the nominees, shall we? Colin Farrell, “Horrible Bosses” The Irish actor is the epitome of the leading man: dark-haired, dark-eyed, smoky-voiced, with an enormous list of credits to his name including “S.W.A.T.” and his Golden Globe-winning turn in “In Bruges.” None of those qualities are on display in Farrell’s “Horrible Bosses” performance as coke fiend Bobby Pellitt, a balding, overweight son of a you-know-what. His physical transformation is as shocking as Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman of “Tropic Thunder” fame. It’s no less award-worthy, either. Elizabeth Banks, “The Hunger Games” Banks was a huge “Hunger Games” fan well before the movie ever got into motion, and her adoration for the world of Panem shines brightly through her performance as the bubbly Effie. It’s no easy task trying to recognize the “Zack and Miri” actress beneath the layers upon layers of pink-and-pale powder, but trust us, she’s there — and she’ll be there for many years to come, thanks to the huge success of the first “Hunger Games” film. Johnny Depp, “21 Jump Street” We did it, guys! No, seriously, we did — MTV News long championed for a Depp cameo in Jonah Hill’s “21 Jump Street,” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star delivered with flying colors. Aside from the fact that Depp is virtually unrecognizable in the role, it’s the hilarious and astonishing way that his part plays out that proves just how much of a transformation this “Jump Street” throwback really was for the Oscar-nominated actor. Michelle Williams, “My Week With Marilyn” As Jamie Foxx and Philip Seymour Hoffman will happily tell you, getting under the skin of real-life historical figures is a great way to win yourself an Oscar. That tactic didn’t work for Williams at this year’s Academy Awards, but it could very easily lead to a Golden Popcorn trophy at the Movie Awards on Sunday. Williams is virtually unrecognizable as Monroe, slipping into the iconic entertainer’s tragic life with ease. Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” If I were a betting man, I’d put money on Mara taking home the Best On-Screen Transformation award. Seriously, did any of these other candidates get their no-no parts pierced for their roles? I didn’t think so! Beyond the long-term physical adjustments she made to her own body, Mara embraced punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander’s cold and calculating personality wholeheartedly, convincing us beyond a shadow of a doubt that she truly was the girl who played with fire. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET. The Throne don’t appear in their new ‘No Church in the Wild’ video, but deliver a powerful clip all the same. By Rob Markman Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” music video Photo: Vevo/ Def Jam/ Roc-A-Fella “Power concedes nothing without a demand”: If a quote could sum up the Throne’s “No Church in the Wild” music video, Frederick Douglass’ famed call for revolution might do it best. Neither Kanye West nor Jay-Z actually appear in their Romain Gavras-directed clip, which was released online Tuesday (May 29) — and, frankly, an appearance by the megastar duo could’ve very well hindered the powerful message they were trying to send. Moments before the beat builds, we see a young masked revolutionary ignite a Molotov cocktail and walk in slow motion toward a wall of police officers who stand unified, draped in riot gear. The clash begins with a fiery explosion in the middle of a Prague street. Gavras depicts a power struggle familiar to people all across the globe, whether in Los Angeles in 1992 or London in 2011. Set to the buzzing drums of the 88-Keys and Yeezy-produced track, ill-equipped freedom fighters with nothing to lose wage war against an oppressive regime. Of course, there is nothing in the video that directly details a specific storyline or plot: Instead, viewers are expected to rely on their own interpretations of the scenes that look taken straight from CNN. Fearless protestors hurl stones and fight armed officers using only their bare fists. In one scene, a cop who rides atop a horse chases a revolutionary down an alleyway and beats him with a club. Young men are beaten, choked, sprayed with mace and dragged across the concrete as Frank Ocean soulfully croons, “Will he make it out alive?” in time with the staged anarchy. The gritty violence and social commentary are reminiscent of Gavras’ video for M.I.A.’s “Born Free.” Though “No Church” isn’t as graphic (there’s no nudity or massive death scenes), it is moving all the same. By the end of the five-minute video, the freedom fighters seem to have notched a victory of some sort, standing in triumph in the face of their oppressors. But even if a single battle is won, there is no conclusive ending, meaning that the war still rages on. One of the catchiest lines in the song is a party-weary Kanye spitting, “Sunglasses and Advil/ Last night was mad real.” After the track’s war-torn visual, the lyric can (and should) take on new meaning. Share your thoughts on the “No Church in the Wild” video in the comments! ‘You have to build up the tension, because the kiss is the release,’ crooner tells MTV News. By Fallon Prinzivalli Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” Photo: Summit Entertainment The Best Kiss award at the MTV Movie Awards is arguably the fans’ favorite category to vote on. For the past three years in a row, the honor has been bestowed upon “Twilight” co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for their smooches as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. This year, they’re up against some hefty competition: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum in “The Vow” and, their biggest opponents, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games.” While the winner is anybody’s guess, we’re wondering which couple deserves the award. There’s no one better to answer our question than Robin Thicke, who’s managed to croon his way into the hearts of many ladies. The musician tells MTV News that the Best Kiss award should go to the most “powerful” smooch. “You have to build up the tension, because the kiss is the release,” the “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” singer said. “The kiss is the moment when the strings come in, and all of the danger and the anger and the frustration and the loss — the kiss becomes redemption. It takes you out of purgatory and into the gates of heaven. A kiss has to be that powerful, in my opinion.” If fans honor Thicke’s definition when they vote, it sounds like Hutcheron and Lawrence could take home the coveted golden popcorn. Their characters, Katniss and Peeta, are in danger while they’re stuck in a cave, she could lose him if he dies from his injuries, and he’s frustrated and angry that she wants to head into the bloodbath of the Cornucopia to save him. With a single kiss, all that tension is released. Sounds like they’re a shoe-in, right? You decide! The power is in your hands. Vote now through Saturday, June 1, at MovieAwards.MTV.com , and stay tuned for more Movie Awards coverage right here on MTV News!
