Lovato and Britney Spears expected to be at Monday (May 14) Fox upfront event. By Gil Kaufman Demi Lovato Photo: Tom Pennington/ Getty Images America will meet the rebooted panel of the “X Factor” on Monday and filling the fourth slot at the judge’s table will be Demi Lovato . The 19-year-old Disney star is expected to make the announcement of her high-profile gig on Monday at the Fox network upfront presentation, which will also officially reveal the worst-kept-secret in TV: that Britney Spears has joined the show as well. Lovato is one of the many names that has been in the mix for the gig, which at one point also included Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. TMZ confirmed that Lovato has scored the gig, which will put her on alongside series creator Simon Cowell and music executive L.A. Reid when the show comes back for its second season in the fall. Last week, Spears finalized her deal, which will reportedly pay her $15 million for one season’s work. Spears and Lovato replace Paula Abdul and former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who were fired in January after the first season of the heavily-hyped show failed to live up to Cowell’s lofty expectations. Both Lovato and Spears are expected to be on hand on Monday when Fox announces the show’s new lineup at its upfront presentations. Though Lovato has a summer tour planned , those dates will reportedly not conflict with her new duties on “X Factor.” A spokesperson for “X Factor” could not be reached for comment at press time. Last week, MTV News asked some media experts whether the move to “X Factor” makes sense for Spears and the general consensus was that it did. “I think it is a good move, actually,” said Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky. “I think she has so many people on her team watching what she’s doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it’s the right move right now.” The only concern is how the reclusive star might deal with the increased scrutiny and requirement to think on her feet on live TV. “I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she’s been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled,” said Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard . “And there can be uncontrollable moments on ‘The X Factor,’ and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome.” Lovato and Spears, 30, are the kind of young singers that “X Factor” producers were seemingly looking for to give the show a more youthful appeal and share their experience with contestants. Both are former child stars who’ve struggled with personal issues and neither has experience appearing on live network television. Do you think Demi Lovato will make a good “X Factor” judge? Pop star will donate all the song’s proceeds to the Bethesda Centre, which helps single moms. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber and Patricia Mallette Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Justin Bieber has dropped his ode to his mama, Pattie Mallette, just in time for Mother’s Day . The song, a guitar-driven ballad titled “Turn to You,” breaks down the pair’s life together, and their early struggles as Mallette worked to raise a baby Bieber as a teenager. Over jangly guitars, Bieber recalls, “You worked two jobs to keep a roof up over our heads/ You chose life for me, no you never gave up/ I admire you for the strength you instilled in me/ You were so young, you were just my age when you had me/ Mom, you were so brave, there was nothing that would stop or get in our way/ And I know you will always be there for me.” The song’s empowering message really picks up on the chorus, when he proclaims, “So when you’re lost/ And you’re tired when you’re broken in two/ Let my love take you higher cause I still turn to you.” Proceeds from sales of the song will go to Salvation Army’s Bethesda Centre , a charity that Mallette turned to after she got pregnant. The organization’s site notes that funding is low and that donations are needed to keep the doors open. Bieber, it seems, is looking to do his part. “I wrote a song for my mom. But I’m going to put it out on Mother’s Day,” he told MTV News, explaining why Mama Mallette was worthy of her own track, “[It’s] about the struggles, I say in the song. She had me at like the age I am now. [It’s about] just the struggles she went through and how brave she was, and I think the world needed to know that.” Shortly after releasing the song on Thursday, he had a very specific message for all the moms out there: “Help moms in need. Give them strength. thank u mom,” he tweeted . “it’s on ITUNES. Happy Mother’s Day Weekend. this is for my mom and all those moms out there. here is #TurnToYOu .” What do you think of “Turn to You”? Gosling reunites with Emma Stone in the star-studded, Tommy gun-packed clip. By Kevin P. Sullivan Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in “Gangster Squad” Photo: Warner Bros. One of the fall’s most anticipated releases, ” Gangster Squad ,” packs an all-star cast, old-school vibe and a bunch of Tommy guns. Needless to say, we’re interested. The film from “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer just got its first trailer, so we’ve broken it down for you into these five keys scenes. “Every kingdom comes up bloody” A centerpiece of the trailer, it’s hard to miss Sean Penn even under all of that makeup. In “Gangster Squad,” Penn plays Mickey Cohen, an east coast gangster who has come to Los Angeles to become “a god.” Cohen is the ultimate evil that the Gangster Squad is going to stop at nothing to put out for good. The trailer gives lots of screen time to Penn, and when you also consider the prosthetics on his face, it’s not hard to imagine that Warner Bros. would make a Best Supporting Actor push for him come Oscar season. Phillip Phillips joins her in the bottom two for the first time, while David Cook and Jennifer Lopez hit the stage. By Adam Graham Hollie Cavanagh on “American Idol” Photo: Fox Phillip Phillips was given his first taste of the bottom two, but it was Hollie Cavanagh who was eliminated from “American Idol” on Thursday (May 10). Cavanagh, the 18-year-old from McKinney, Texas, received the lowest number of votes from the nearly 70 million votes cast, according to host Ryan Seacrest. Cavanagh received harsh marks for her performance of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” on Wednesday’s performance episode; Randy Jackson called it “the wrong choice at the wrong time.” Cavanagh just missed a trip back to Texas as part of the top three “Hometown Heroes” visits, which happen on next week’s show. The Liverpudlian kept it together while singing Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” at the close of the show, though her close friend Joshua Ledet was shown tearing up nearby onstage. Mentor Jimmy Iovine had all but written off Cavanagh after “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” “I assumed she understood the core of the song. Evidently, she did not,” Iovine said in his weekly roundup of the week’s performances. “She did not have the personal experience or the professional experience to take on this song. When the chorus came in, she hit the opera button. And at that moment, I felt she crashed and burned and lost out to those other three singers.” He had high praise for the others. He said Phillip Phillips “finally delivered on the promise that we’ve been looking for all year” with his version of Damien Rice’s “Volcano”; Jessica Sanchez “murdered” her performance of the “Dreamgirls” hit “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, “referring to it as “shock and awe”; and Ledet “created a piece of magic that is very rarely seen on the “American Idol” stage” with his take on James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” “I’ve seen Prince, I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen do that, but I’ve never seen that on ‘American Idol,’ ” Iovine said. “It was so, so captivating. I want to see it again and again and again.” Iovine added that he thinks the competition is up for grabs. “Last year, I knew Scotty was gonna win the whole thing. This year, I haven’t got a clue who’s going to get into the final,” he said. “Any one of them, with the right song and the right note, can steal the show. It’s up to them and, eventually, America’s vote.” When the results were read, Sanchez was the first one told she made the top three, followed by Ledet. Also on the show, seventh-season “Idol” winner David Cook dropped by to perform “The Last Song I’ll Write for You,” and Jennifer Lopez turned in a performance of her song “Dance Again.” What did you think of “Idol” on Thursday?
