‘Game Of Thrones’ Births A Shadow Baby

Things get weird on the latest episode, and MTV’s ‘Watching the Thrones’ is ready to dive into it head-on. By Josh Wigler Shadow Baby on “Game of Thrones” Photo: HBO In case you didn’t realize it before, Sunday night’s episode of “Game of Thrones” should have made it quite clear: Westeros can be very, very weird. Think about all the various forms of magic cropping up all over the Seven Kingdoms: the crippled Brandon Stark is able to walk again by way of his wolf dreams. North of the Wall, humanoid monsters with voices like crackling ice exist, with the ability to raise their victims from the dead. And across the Narrow Sea, the first dragons to be born in decades are beginning to grow under the love and care of exiled princess Daenerys Targaryen. And now, on top of all of that, we have … a shadow baby?! Needless to say, episode four of the fantasy series’ second season, “Garden of Bones,” was a strange one. Keep reading for our take on the latest trip to Westeros, and watch the video below for more from our weekly “Watching the Thrones” roundup! Hungry Like the Wolf Robb Stark is a hugely important part of “A Clash of Kings,” the novel upon which season two is based. But his physical presence leaves something to be desired — which is to say, he’s rarely seen in the book, mostly talked about. That’s not the case on “Game of Thrones.” Here, Robb is fully present, as seen in the opening moments of “Garden of Bones.” Robb’s direwolf, Grey Wind, grows stronger with every battle, and Robb’s skills as a tactician and leader of men are improving at the same pace. This latest episode also pulled the curtain back on something not seen in the books, but hugely important to Robb’s character: a little trace of love. But that nurse on the battlefield does not go by the name Jeyne Westerling as she does in the books; indeed, as she presents herself, she’s hardly a noble-born woman at all. Is it just an alias for now, a parlor trick that Jeyne is playing? Or has “Thrones” altered Robb’s love interest in a seriously significant way? The Greatest City in the World Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Qarth! At long last, Dany and her khalasar have reached civilization. And if the people of Qarth are to be believed, Dany has arrived at the greatest city in the world. If you’re a bit skeptical of that claim, that’s more than fair. But even if Qarth as a city doesn’t necessarily live up to the hype (and that itself is up for debate), there are things that happen in Qarth that rank high on the list of all-time greatest “Thrones” moments. Needless to say, Dany has some interesting times ahead of her. The Ghost of Harrenhal Poor Arya Stark. It’s just not getting any better for the little girl forced to live as a little boy. Arya, Gendry and Hot Pie found themselves at the mercy of the Tickler and the Mountain in this week’s episode, watching the pair interrogate their prisoners to death with a disturbingly clever combination of a rat, a bucket and a torch. Not pretty stuff. Even the arrival of Tywin Lannister is hardly a mercy; he’s more civilized than their initial captors, sure, but he’s a Lannister all the same. On the bright side, now Arya has a few more names to add to her people-to-kill list alongside Queen Regent Cersei and her wicked son Joffrey. Draining the Poison Speaking of Joffrey, he’s just getting worse and worse with each episode, if you can believe it. From beheading Ned Stark to threatening Sansa’s life with a crossbow held at point-blank range, Joffrey’s wicked ways seem to know no bounds. And that’s not even the worst of it: The way he made the two prostitutes purchased for him by Tyrion torture each other was absolutely sickening to watch. Joffrey is easily one of the most loathsome characters in all of “Ice and Fire” lore, if not the most loathsome — and believe it or not, he’s even more unlikable on the show. Brutal, brutal, brutal. Shadow Baby! While the latest episode of “Thrones” ended the show’s three-week kid-killing streak , it made up for the combo-breaker by having us witness the priestess Melisandre give birth to a shadow baby. A shadow baby. Clearly, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but it’s strange and horrific to behold all the same. If you ever doubted that Melisandre has magic at her disposal, doubt her no longer. Perhaps she hasn’t backed the right horse in the race for the Iron Throne, but she definitely has formidable power on her side, as Davos can attest to firsthand. As for where that shadow baby’s headed next? Readers of the books certainly know — and if you haven’t read the books, well, keep the Kleenex on hand. You’re going to need it. Tell us what you thought of the latest “Thrones” in the comments section! Related Videos Watching The ‘Thrones’ Related Photos ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season Two

Mini Kanye Struts In Unofficial ‘Way Too Cold’ Video

Fan-directed video stars grade schooler rapping lyrics to West song. By Gil Kaufman A scene from Ashley Smith’s “Way Too Cold” video Photo: Ashley Smith Films Sometimes there’s no reason to wait for the real thing. We have no idea if Kanye West is planning on shooting an official video for his Kim-Kardashian-crush note “Way Too Cold” (originally titled “Theraflu”) . In the meantime, director Ashley Smith has jumped into the breach, posting an unofficial clip for the song on her Vimeo page on Thursday that, well, just kills it. The can’t-look-away video stars a ridiculously cute half-pint reportedly named Caleb as Kanye and the kid is a star. As he struts the streets with his leggy blonde companion (holding her hand at first, awwww), mini ‘Ye rips the song’s lyrics, yes, even the four-and five-letter ones in a video that is the viral opposite of one of West’s typically high-concept, arty pieces. His swagger is unmistakable as he moves through Manhattan past some of Yeezy’s favorite luxury New York outlets while his companion shakes it for him. All the while, Caleb keeps it cool behind some shades and a mini leather jacket, aping the lyrics by throwing up the Roc to prove his allegiance. And, then, for reasons known only to Smith, actors wearing Donald Trump, Condoleezza Rice, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush and Sarah Palin masks pop up, posing menacingly on the street, that is when they’re not grinding on each other. How ridiculous is the kid? At one point he pulls off a flawless split, his hand triumphantly up in the air before breaking into a coughing fit as Theraflu pours out into a measuring cup. The good news is that Smith might have plenty more material to choose from, since DJ Khaled recently told MTV News that he and Kanye have plenty more tracks cooking . “Me and Kanye West went back in the lab and we made another record and got some features on there too,” Khaled said, without revealing too much about the next tune. “I can’t really talk about it, so expect another monstrous earthquake to hit the streets.” Related Artists Kanye West

Rihanna Preps Fancy Footwork For ‘Where Have You Been’ Video

‘I was never going to shoot this video if I couldn’t do choreography,’ Rihanna says in behind-the-scenes video montage. By James Dinh Rihanna Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images/DCP Rihanna has never been known as a dancer, but she’s ready to step her game up for her upcoming “Where Have You Been” video. In an almost three-minute-long behind-the-scenes montage clip that surfaced on Thursday, the megastar takes her Navy to the dance studio, where she’s seen practicing a routine for the upcoming clip alongside a crew of dancers. Rocking some appropriate rehearsal attire and simple sneaks, Ri turns to the camera at one point to admit that a dance routine was necessary for the hard dance track’s video, saying, “I was never going to shoot this video if I couldn’t do choreography, ’cause it would be pretty pointless. It would be disappointing.” As with the foot skills she performed in clips like “Rude Boy” and old-school joint “If It’s Lovin’ That You Want,” choreographer Hi-Hat helped keep Rihanna’s moves in line with the singer’s comfort and style, while still showing off the most choreography we’ve ever seen her do. As one of the world’s biggest pop stars, the recent Billboard Music Awards nominee also revealed that devoting time to performance skills for videos is rare. “My schedule has always been so busy, it never really allowed for us to spend time rehearsing and making up dance moves,” she said. Just last week, Rihanna took to her Facebook to tease a dazzling black-and-white shot from the clip, where she’s seen exposing her midriff and kneeling before forest-like scenery. No word on when the video will be released, but with a recently announced musical guest gig on “Saturday Night Live,” “Where Have You Been” is likely to be one of the singer’s performance sets on the May 5 show. This will mark her third appearance on the late-night sketch comedy show, which will be hosted by New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning. What do you think of Rihanna’s fancy footwork? ‘Total Recall’ Remake Heads In ‘A Different Direction’ From Original

Director Len Wiseman tells MTV News about Kate Beckinsale going bad and Bryan Cranston’s complex villain. By Kara Warner Colin Farrell in “Total Recall” Photo: Sony Pictures We still have a while to wait for the August 3 release of the new “Total Recall,” but now that we’ve seen and obsessed over the official full-length trailer , we have a better idea of what to expect from Len Wiseman’s re-telling of the classic Philip K. Dick story, as well as how it compares to the 1990 cult favorite starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by Paul Verhoeven. In addition to providing MTV News with his expert commentary about the well-received trailer , Wiseman also gave us some in-depth insight into how he’s handled the precedents and expectations set by Verhoeven’s film, how closely the 2012 film sticks to Dick’s original story, as well as what fans can appreciate and expect from stars Colin Farrell and a villainous Kate Beckinsale . MTV : How much fun has incorporating all the new technology been? Wiseman : It’s great. And, I will be honest: It’s a blessing and a curse for me, because I’m so of a school of practical effects and practical stunts. And when you develop a movie like this, which is an entire world you’re creating, you can only build so much, and then you go into your effects world. And actually, there’s a lot of practical elements in here that people assume are CG, because CG is used so often. In the trailer, we did this really complicated shot of Colin doing a fight sequence shootout. The camera is spinning around, it’s 100 percent practical. And it’s funny when I really kicked the “how much time and how expensive” nightmare kind of math in to figure that all out and everything to put in, and what surprised me is a lot of people think that is CG. I think because you maybe don’t immediately process how that’s being done. But it’s funny, because I look at that and go, “That’s actually the shot that’s entirely 100 percent practical.” So I really do find it a blessing and a curse, because I started as a prop guy. I actually started building models initially and then went into the prop department, and I’m so much of a practical mind. But then you get into a point where, “OK, now we have to build a world that is 100 and some odd years in the future.” And your construction budget, that’s a surprise. MTV : How will fans be impressed by Colin’s performance? Wiseman : I think they’re absolutely going to love him. It’s a very different take on the character. It’s much more of the internal struggle that he’s faced with, and he did such a great job with this mystery of his own soul, really. It’s such a mystery, this film. It’s got the action and sci-fi, everything hovering on the perimeter of what makes it feel like a big action film. But in its core, it’s a mystery, and it’s a mystery of himself. And I just think people will be really captivated by following his journey. He really does allow you to be him. So I really think they’ll be excited by him. MTV : What about seeing Kate Beckinsale playing a villain? Wiseman : It’s fun for us as well. She’s never done anything like that. So to be able to have some fun with playing a villain — and she had fun doing it too, because she’s always like, “You have to be so earnest when you’re saving the world. Wow, you can actually just loosen up and just, the bad guys have more fun.” I would love to get, I’ll probably put this out on the DVD, but these girls are just kicking each other’s asses and really brutal. We wanted to attack it. It was just a really vicious brawl, and in between the cuts, they both get so girly. Right on “cut.” There’s plenty of times when Kate actually just nicked Jessica [Biel]’s nose or same thing with Jessica, and they immediately just go from these vicious badass lethal killers to immediately very apologetic and very polite and girly. It’s great to see. MTV : Will we see Mars? Wiseman : We won’t see Mars. And I got to say, it’s one of the things that attracted me to the script, because I really, I along with a lot of other people, I really loved the Verhoeven film. I was very skeptical on just the reboot, just the idea. And until I read the script, with a lot of speculation going, it takes it in such a different direction from that film. Because it didn’t go to Mars, funny enough, is why I was interested. And it’s also just like I said: It plays a little bit into the threat of what the Philip K. Dick story had of, much more of bringing the threat back, really Doug’s mission to save Earth, not Mars. MTV : What can you tell us about getting Bryan Cranston? Wiseman : He’s got one really fun personality. I think a lot of people, if you’ve seen him in his prior TV show, I’m sure, I happened to be introduced to him through films and then “Breaking Bad” as well. I’ve never seen “Malcolm in the Middle,” and I was taken by how fun and charming and funny the guy is. I probably came late to that game. That’s no surprise to anyone else. He really has a balance of evil and charming, which I really like. He plays off great [with Colin]. I wish they actually had more scenes together. It’s a bit of a weird structure, where the villain is kind of split between Kate and Cranston. So when they’re together, though, it’s great. He’s really got a good balance there, where when there’s a pure tendency that a lot of people have to play just very villainous, he has a little bit more passion for what he’s doing, where you actually believe it is the right thing, rather than twirling your mustache a bit too much. ‘American Idol’ Fresh Out Of Saves For Colton Dixon

Seeming front-runner shockingly voted off the show, joined in the bottom three by Elise Testone and Hollie Cavanagh. By Adam Graham Colton Dixon on “American Idol” Photo: Fox “Bad Romance” turned out just plain bad for Colton Dixon on Thursday (April 19), as the 20-year-old Tennessean — who had never before landed in the bottom three — was voted off “American Idol.” Dixon found himself at the bottom of the 53 million votes cast following Wednesday’s performance episode . Dixon, the Mohawk-mullet-wearing emo-rocker who entered “Idol” initially only as a show of moral support for his sister, performed a goth-lite version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” on Wednesday’s show, as well as an emo reading of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September.” When given the news he had been voted off — and would indeed be going home, since the judges used their one-and-only save for the season last week to rescue Jessica Sanchez from oblivion — Dixon said sorry to his fans. “I need to apologize. I wasn’t myself last night, and I get it,” he said, turning to the judges. “I appreciate what you told me last night. I’ll take that when I’m making a record, and I’ll choose songs … ” He was cut off by Jennifer Lopez, who told him, “You’ll make many records,” and Randy Jackson, who offered, “You have a huge career ahead of you, man.” Dixon had received generally favorable remarks from the judges throughout the season but was dinged for his performances Wednesday, in particular for the Earth, Wind & Fire tune. In a video that aired Thursday (April 19) that caught him backstage, Dixon reacted to the criticism. “Ouch, that kind of stung a little bit,” he said. “But honestly, I’m not trying to sound cocky, but I don’t care.” Dixon was in the bottom three along with Hollie Cavanagh and perpetual bottom-dweller Elise Testone. Testone was sent back to safety first, leaving Dixon and Cavanagh to sweat it out. Host Ryan Seacrest was up to even more tricks than usual when handing contestants their fate Thursday; at one point he told Joshua Ledet, “I’m afraid … you didn’t get the right number of votes … to put you in the bottom three. You are safe!” (C’mon, Seacrest, that barely even makes sense.) Regarding Ledet, “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine remarked, “He could end up in the finale.” In a video package, Seacrest paid tribute to his mentor Dick Clark, who died Wednesday at age 82. The evening also saw performances from Kris Allen, who sang his new song “The Vision of Love,” and party rockers LMFAO, who apologized for their party-rocking ways with a typically raucous rendition of “Sorry for Party Rocking.” What did you think of “Idol” on Thursday? Wiz Khalifa ‘Kinda Freaked’ Out By Tupac Hologram

‘Dr. Dre and Snoop are alive, so that was pretty awesome to be up there with them,’ Wiz tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Lacsina Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg didn’t just bring out the Tupac hologram at Coachella, they had some pretty awe-inspiring live guests as well: Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Warren G and Wiz Khalifa . Wiz marched onstage early on to perform his and Snoop’s platinum single “Young, Wild and Free” and wasn’t on hand to witness the holographic Tupac stunt. But the Pittsburgh MC was hyped to share the stage with the living legends. “I went out before the holographic Tupac so I actually didn’t get to share [the stage],” Khalifa told MTV News on Wednesday during a break from shooting the “Payphone” music video with Maroon 5. “It’s cool. Dr. Dre and Snoop are alive, so that was pretty awesome to be up there with them, but yeah, it was awesome.” Khalifa admitted that the ‘Pac-o-gram made him a bit uneasy though. “I don’t know, it kinda freaked me out,” he said. Kendrick Lamar , who performed his new single “The Recipe” alongside Dr. Dre that same night, was excited by the optical illusion. “It was just a crazy feeling, made me think of that one moment when I seen dude in real life,” K. Dot told MTV News. The Good Doctor told TMZ that he hopes to expand on the technology that was used to resurrect the fallen rap legend onstage. “Right now it’s flat, it just looks like it’s three-dimensional from the front. But I’m working on some new and different things for the future,” he said. “Hopefully, we can see Jimi Hendrix and Marvin Gaye. Let’s see what happens.” Related Photos Tupac’s Hologram At Coachella Related Artists Wiz Khalifa Tupac

‘The Dictator’ Is ’90 Percent Improv,’ Anna Faris Says

‘You sort of go with it and wait until somebody calls cut,’ actress tells MTV News of the ‘general chaos’ on set of the Sacha Baron Cohen flick. By Fallon Prinzivalli Sacha Baron Cohen and Anna Faris in “The Dictator” Photo: Paramount When MTV News spoke with Anna Faris about her role in the upcoming film, it was everything you’d expect from an interview with the comic actress. Her humorous disposition led to quite a few laughs while we got the scoop on her latest flick. In the movie, Faris plays Zoey, a liberal idealist with a good heart who runs an organic, vegan grocery store in Brooklyn. When she meets General Aladeen (Baron Cohen) at a protest, she thinks he’s a refugee and jumps at the opportunity to help him. When we spoke to the “Scary Movie” actress, she opened up about the challenges of her role (in particular having to grow out her underarm hair), Baron Cohen’s stunt at the 2012 Academy Awards and his crazy antics on set. MTV : Zoey is a physical departure from your usual leading-lady roles in films like “The House Bunny” and “What’s Your Number?” What was it that led you to choose this script? Anna Faris : I’ve been such a big fan of Sacha’s for years and I just jumped at the opportunity to get to work with him. I was just thrilled. That was really exciting for me. I love, in general, just getting to transform myself for characters. That’s really an exciting process for me. When they presented me with a more androgynous look, I thought that was just perfect. You know, this is the kind of girl that the dictator has never met before. He’s used to sleeping with models and actresses, these really stunning women, so for a while he thinks that I’m a boy. MTV : Was there anything challenging for you about the role? Faris : Not so much the role, but the project was really challenging because Sacha and his whole crew, all the writers and our director, they’ve worked together for so long and they do so much improv. It’s like 90 percent improv, and so the challenge was just keeping up with that as an actor, just being on your toes. I found it really hard, but also really exciting. MTV : Of course, we have to ask: What was it like working with Baron Cohen? Faris : It was amazing. He’s just this sort of crazy genius. You just have to be prepared for anything. The scene [can go] in a gazillion different directions and you just have to sort of roll with the punches. But it was great, I loved it. I just adore him. He was in character a lot of the time, but when he wasn’t, he’s a really kind gentleman — really intellectual and very funny. I just adored him. MTV/b> : You said he was in character most of the time. Would you approach him in character as well? Faris : [ Laughs ] Yeah, I kind of would! Like, “OK, wait, is this the…? Oh, wait, he’s the supreme leader.” It was a little tricky for me because my character isn’t supposed to know that he’s a dictator. So I was like, “Well, do I then? Maybe? I don’t know? I’ll just go to craft services.” MTV : With all the improvisation, did you have a hard time keeping a straight face on set? Faris : Yeah, a lot of times! I mean, I feel really fortunate that I had the “Scary Movie” experience because I feel like that sort of prepared me for a lot of the general chaos of the set of “The Dictator,” so I just felt like you sort of go with it and wait until somebody calls cut. Until then, you just keep acting. MTV : He’s known to make people uncomfortable, like his stunt at the Oscars where he poured fake ashes on Ryan Seacrest. Did he ever do anything that made you think, “OK, where is the nearest exit? How can I escape this?” Faris : [ Laughs ] No! He was actually so sweet to me. I sort of escaped all that. But he was always, you know, such a gentleman. I didn’t know what it was going to be, but I did know that something was sort of afoot for the Oscars. And my husband [Chris Pratt] and I went and I saw Sacha, and I was like, “Honey, we just need to steer clear. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but let’s just sort of avoid Sacha.” MTV : Do you have a favorite memory from shooting? Faris : There’s a scene where Sacha and I are sort of forming our friendship in an intimate way, [ laughs ] and that’s really fun. I had to grow my armpit hair for the movie. MTV News : How was that? Faris : It was awful! I was so naive about it too. I was like, “Yeah, I’ll grow it out. No big deal.” MTV News : Did your husband say anything about it? Faris : He was such a good sport about it. He was like, “Yeah, honey! You do it. Just go.” But he also didn’t have to be around me too much that summer. I thought it would be, you know, fluffy and light, I guess. But it was so dark and thick and coarse. It was crazy. I felt very self-conscious about it. Maybe I was a little bit of a baby about it. MTV News : Before we sign off, can you tell us your favorite joke? Faris : Oh, my favorite joke! OK, let’s see. A little boy and his grampa … wait, oh no, I won’t tell you that one. It’s a little raunchy. But I will tell you this one: There’s two blondes and there’s a river in between them and one blonde says to the other blonde, “Hey, how do I get to the other side?” And the other blonde says, “You’re already there!” Yep.
