Whitney Houston Re-Enters Billboard Hot 100

‘I Will Always Love You’ sees 6,723 percent increase in digital sales and forces Billboard to adapt rules on ‘catalog’ tracks. By James Montgomery Whitney Houston Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Spurred on by a massive uptick in digital sales and radio airplay following her death this past weekend , Whitney Houston ‘s “I Will Always Love You” re-entered Billboard ‘s Hot 100 singles chart this week, landing at #7. And, in the process, it forced the magazine to adjust the way it handles so-called “catalog” tracks on the chart. Historically, catalog songs — tracks still frequently aired on contemporary radio months or years after their initial debut — were ineligible for the Hot 100 ( Billboard moves them to several “recurrent” charts once they’ve spent 20 weeks on the chart and have fallen below position number 50), though, in a statement , Billboard director of charts Silvio Pietroluongo said that will now officially change. “Going forward, we feel that it is the proper move to allow older titles posting enough activity to return to the Hot 100 if ranking in the chart’s upper half,” he said. According to Nielsen SoundScan, “I Will Always Love You” — which topped the Hot 100 for a staggering 14 weeks in 1992 — posted a 6,723 percent increase in digital sales, while Nielsen BDS reported radio airplay of the song leapt by 915 percent, both of which helped it vault back into the Hot 100. In addition, Houston will also place two more songs on this week’s singles chart, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” at #35 and “Greatest Love of All” at #41. Houston’s back catalog has also seen marked increases in sales , as Whitney: The Greatest Hits re-entered the Billboard Top 200 albums chart at #6, and several of her biggest hits have combined to rack up nearly 900,000 downloads in the days since her death. The resurgence of “I Will Always Love You” is historic, though not entirely without precedent. In 2001, following the attacks of September 11, Lee Greenwood’s 1984 hit “God Bless the USA” and Houston’s iconic performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” both returned to the Hot 100, though, as Billboard explains “at the time, the inclusion of these songs properly captured the musical mood as the nation reacted to that tragic day.” Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Whitney Houston Wanted A Legacy As ‘Somebody Who Cared’

During the live MTV News special ‘Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words,’ we reflect on the diva’s biggest moments and interviews. By Kara Warner Whitney Houston Photo: MTV News Although many of us are still getting over the shock of Whitney Houston’s untimely death , MTV New paid its respects Wednesday (February 15) with ” Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words .” The live MTV News special was hosted by our own Sway Calloway and featured interview clips of Houston from her network debut in 1986 through her final interview, her career highs and lows, faith and family, as well as how she hoped to be remembered. MTV News gathered a collection of heartfelt reactions from Houston’s celebrity fans at Sunday’s Grammys, and Fergie, Amber Rose, Ne-Yo and Foster the People all spoke about the impact the late icon had on the industry. “Whitney was such an inspiration to me ever since I was a little girl,” Fergie said. “I used to watch the Grammys and I used to watch her walk up on that stage. She would belt out a song with such confidence, and I’d just dream that I could be on that stage like Whitney. She was a role model for me. She was an icon.” We dug into our vaults for Whitney’s top MTV moments, which included her first-ever performance and win for “How Will I Know” at the Video Music Awards in 1986, along with a rare, candid interview in 1998 with rumored rival Mariah Carey , during which they discussed what it means to be a diva and the miracle of having children. “The only thing I really have a problem with the diva factor is who represents it and how you represent being a diva.” Houston said of the label. “Exactly,” Carey agreed. “There’s a bitchy factor [associated with the word].” “Some people give divas a bad name,” Houston continued. “There is a standard of that kind of attitude … there’s a certain kind of humilia … ” “Humility,” Carey chimed in. “Humility. Thank you!” Houston said, showing off the exact quality she was speaking about. One of the most poignant moments in our special came from a 1991 interview in which she addressed the topic of how she hopes to be remembered. “Well, they’re going to remember me how they’re going to remember me. They’re going to write books, they’re going to do this, they’re going to write that, and everybody is going to have their own idea. I don’t know, I want to be remembered for being a real nice person, somebody who cared and tried to do everybody righteously,” she said. “I don’t want to go down for being a hag,” she added with a laugh. Houston died at age 48 of yet-undetermined causes. Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Nicki Minaj’s Grammy Performance Was ‘So Theatrical’

‘I was really excited about how well Nicki performed,’ Laurieann Gibson tells MTV News about polarizing ‘Roman Holiday.’ By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj performs at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images On Sunday night, Nicki Minaj assaulted the Grammy stage with a controversial, over-the-top performance of her new track, “Roman Holiday.” Full of kookiness, complete with religious imagery and an exorcism of her bad-boy alter ego, Roman, Minaj owned the headlines coming out of the show. MTV News caught up with choreographer Laurieann Gibson, who dished about what went down behind the scenes to stage the spectacle . “Well, I’m not really moved by what people say; I’m moved by what it is and again just a big ‘thank you’ to the Grammys. I was super-proud about the execution and really excited about how well Nicki performed,” she said. “[Her] being a rap queen, it was really amazing to see rap music at that level and have the ability, at that level, to perform something so theatrical.” Nicki is no stranger to theatrics, and neither is Gibson, and the ladies turned up their creative dials to a big 11 when it came to the debut performance of the Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded track. “I’ve worked with Nicki before. When she was first starting I did an MTV performance [on the VMA pre-show in 2010]. She just is so unique,” Gibson said. “I love being able to get back in that, and when she called me, she talked to me about the movie aspect of it, the exorcism part of it, and then we just evolved it. And I just evolved the inspiration not from a literal perspective, but for me, it was ‘OK, that’s the subject matter.’ Then I am able to be very theatrical, very dramatic, very big, very bold without it being literal. “So the exorcism was her idea and her concept,” she continued. “And for me, it was just a place of being theatrical and dramatic in the coloring and the content and the story of the monastery and the monks.” At the end of the day, the women did have something to say, and Gibson was surprised that the message didn’t translate on a bigger scale. “I do have to understand how they want to evolve the character, with her in particular it was Roman, with the idea that he needed to go to a monastery because he needed to go,” she teased about his naughty ways. “For me, it was about the theatrical aspect of being able to create something like that. It’s about always inspiring people and extract that negative from them and believe in what they can do and empower themselves in a positive way and not be afraid to look at those things that are evil. … The inspiration and the fight in the choreography, in the creative, is bold because when you believe in yourself and you believe in the good, you come from a bold place. You’re not intimidated any longer by the evil.” Gibson had a message for any haters out there. “I was super-shocked because one, there was nothing literal. I was very conscious, OK, no crosses … when creating choreography, the instinct thing is to go to a prayer and I was like, ‘No praying hands!’ ” she said, noting that in the end it was all about “the innocence and the purity of just being bold, about the fight and no fear. … There wasn’t anything negative there.” Related Videos 2012 Grammy Awards Red Carpet Highlights Related Photos 2012 Grammy Awards: Backstage And Audience Related Artists Nicki Minaj

Chaka Khan spoke with CNN’s Piers Morgan about the death of Whitney Houston and questioned why Clive Davis held his pre-Grammy party after Whitney’s death. Chaka called the decision “insanity” and criticized those who let it happen: “I thought that was complete insanity,” Chaka Khan, who sang with Whitney Houston on ‘I’m Every Woman’, explained. “I don’t know what could motivate a person to have a party, in a building where the person whose life he had influenced so enormously, and whose life had been affected by her… I don’t understand how that party went on.” Adding: “A more honest tribute, in my opinion, would have been, maybe, call everybody together, say a prayer, let’s eat dinner and go home.” RELATED: Bobby Brown Dismisses Reports He’s Unwelcome At Whitney Funeral, Says Daughter Is “Doing Better” Aretha Franklin Sings Tribute For Goddaughter Whitney Houston [VIDEO] Whitney Houston Private Funeral Set For Saturday In New Jersey Celebrity Atlantans Remember Former ATL Resident Whitney Houston Whitney Houston May Have Died From Combination Of Xanax & Alcohol [REPORT] Jennifer Hudson Sings Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” At Grammys [VIDEO] New Edition On Whitney Houston’s Death: “We Are Shocked And Saddened” Bobby Declares Love For Whitney On Stage [VIDEO]

More here:

Chris Brown has worked hard to rebuild his image since violently assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna the night before the Grammys in 2009, but country singer Miranda Lambert doesn’t forget so easily. After the Grammy Awards, Lambert took to Twitter and wondered why Brown was allowed to perform twice during the show, adding, “He beat on a girl…not cool that we act like that didn’t happen.” The country singer then suggested Brown listen to her song “Gunpowder & Lead” about avenging domestic violence and “be put back in his place. Not at the Grammys.” Check out her tweets below and let us know what you think. Do you agree with Miranda Lambert? ‘Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words’ To Air On MTV Tonight

Live 30-minute special will feature interview clips with Houston dating back to her network debut in 1986. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston in 1995 Photo: 20th Century Fox/Getty Images MTV will pay respects to Whitney Houston on Wednesday (February 15) with a live 30-minute tribute entitled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words.” The MTV News special, airing at 7:30 p.m. ET and hosted by Sway Calloway, will feature interview clips of Houston from her network debut in 1986 through her final interview. Houston died at age 48 on Saturday in her Los Angeles hotel room of as-yet-undetermined causes. The singer had a long history with the network, dating back to her 1985 self-titled debut album. The third single from that multiplatinum smash was “How Will I Know,” which helped introduce the singer to a wider audience when it became one of the first videos by a black female singer to go into heavy rotation on MTV, blasting open the doors for a whole generation of R&B and pop divas to follow. Along the way, Houston smashed a number of records , including the best-selling single of all time by a female artist, her iconic cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” The Grammy-winning album that song came from, the soundtrack to her big-screen debut, “The Bodyguard,” also set the all-time record for soundtrack albums, with more than 44 million copies sold worldwide. During the MTV special, Sway will share personal stories from music celebrities on Houston’s impact and her peerless voice. The show will stream simultaneously on MTV.com and be available on demand immediately after it airs. In addition, MTV News will continue its coverage of the tragic death of the singer, covering everything from breaking developments to Houston’s funeral . Houston will be laid to rest in her native Newark, New Jersey, on Saturday at an invitation-only private funeral at her childhood house of worship, the New Baptist Church. The cause of Houston’s death is still unknown. Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office continues to quell any speculation. “I know there are reports that she maybe was drowned or did she overdose, but we won’t make a final determination until all the tests are in,” he told CNN . Share your condolences with Whitney’s family and friends on our Facebook page. Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Animated Feature Film

MTV News thinks ‘Rango’ is the likely winner at this year’s Academy Awards, but who should win? By Josh Wigler “Rango” Photo: Paramount Pictures The Academy Awards are fast approaching, and it’s bound to be an animated show this year — if not a particularly “Adventure”-ous one. For the first time in years, animation powerhouse Pixar has been shut out of the Oscar race for Best Animated Feature Film, leaving the field wide open for an unexpected newcomer to take the top prize. Two foreign flicks — “A Cat in Paris” and “Chico & Rita” — are in the mix, battling it out against popular favorites and proven franchise hits “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “Puss in Boots.” But we expect that the Academy will skew toward the surreal this year, honoring the beautifully bizarre “Rango” with a shiny new golden statue. Read on for our picks and wishes for Best Animated Feature Film. Who Will Win : “Rango” takes it home. “A Cat in Paris” and “Chico & Rita” cancel each other out, as do DreamWorks Animation’s two offerings. That leaves the door open for the little chameleon that could, played to quirky perfection by seasoned veteran Johnny Depp. Reteaming with his former “Pirates of the Caribbean” captain Gore Verbinski, “Rango” stands out as one of the most original animated movies to hit theaters stateside in quite some time. It’s fully deserving of its impending victory. Having said that… Who Should Win : “The Adventures of Tintin.” Clearly, it’s not going to win — it’s not even nominated! A travesty, I say. Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the adventure tales from Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi stands out as one of the greatest comic book films of 2011, and in my opinion, the best animated movie of the year. It deserves not just a nomination, but a win, for its fantastic score from John Williams, wonderfully inventive opening credits, astoundingly assembled action pieces and yet another all-star motion-capture grand slam from the incredible Andy Serkis. “Tintin” didn’t win its Golden Globe award for nothing, folks. This movie should already be polishing its Oscar by now — there are no excuses for its exclusion from the race. The MTV Movies team has the 2012 Oscars covered! Stick with us for everything you need to know leading up to the awards show, and on Sunday, February 25, we’ll put you on the red carpet and bring you all the winners.
