‘Arrested Development’ To Shoot This Summer?

Michael Cera updates MTV News on progress of ‘Arrested Development’ movie and new TV episodes. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Cera Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Bluth-family fans collectively blue themselves when it was announced that “Arrested Development” would be coming back in both film and television form. Netflix announced late last year that they would be backing new episodes of “Arrested” that would pave the way for an eventual feature film. Despite the good news, fans remain in the dark regarding when “Arrested Development” might actually go back into production. But according to Michael Cera , who spoke with MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival about his new movie “The End of Love,” the Bluth reunion may be coming together sooner than expected. “I’ve heard summer,” Cera told MTV News. “So hopefully that’s going to happen.” Still, like his “Arrested” costars, Cera is of the “I’ll believe it when I see it” school of thought. “It’s hard to be excited, because I don’t feel any progress day to day,” he said. “But I’m sure it’s happening. I think it’s just out of my realm of awareness. I’ll be happy when we’re on set doing it.” Cera’s fellow “Arrested” actor Alia Shawkat also spoke with MTV News at Sundance and expressed her enthusiasm about getting back into the Bluth household sooner than later. “It’s been kind of following me around like a very attractive albatross,” she said of her “Arrested Development” history. “But now it’s hopefully going to happen. It would be very exciting.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Neil Young Angered By ‘Sound Of Music Today’

‘We’re in the 21st century and we have the worst sound that we’ve ever had,’ Young tells MTV News at Sundance Film Festival. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Neil Young Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — It’s hard to argue about the digital age of music in terms of efficiency and portability. When it comes down to cycling through shelves upon shelves of old CDs versus taking one’s entire library of music on the go in a single handheld device, the choice seems rather clear. But convenience aside, there is something missing in the digital translation of tunes — at least there is according to legendary folk rocker Neil Young, who spoke with MTV News in Park City (where he’s promoting the Slamdance release of his new Jonathan Demme-helmed documentary “Neil Young Journeys”) and expressed his concerns over the current state of “the sound of music.” “I’m finding that I have a little bit of trouble with the quality of the sound of music today,” Young said. “I don’t like it. It just makes me angry. Not the quality of the music, but we’re in the 21st century and we have the worst sound that we’ve ever had. It’s worse than a 78 [rpm record]. Where are our geniuses? What happened?” Young argued that MP3s feature only 5 percent of the data from an original master file, which he sees as a major problem. “If you’re an artist and you created something and you knew the master was 100 percent great, but the consumer got 5 percent, would you be feeling good?” he asked. “I like to point that out to artists. That’s why people listen to music differently today. It’s all about the bottom and the beat driving everything, and that’s because in the resolution of the music, there’s nothing else you can really hear. The warmth and the depth at the high end is gone.” The singer-songwriter likened the current state of music to an equally present political movement: “It’s like Occupy Music — the 5 percent, that’s who we are now. We used to be the hundred percent!” Young isn’t unilaterally dissatisfied with the modern era of music, however. He said he’s pleased by the returning popularity of the folk genre, for instance, particularly in the hands of capable musicians like Mumford and Sons and My Morning Jacket. “Mumford and Sons and My Morning Jacket are great bands,” Young said. “I love them both and I know them well. I feel good about saying that.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. ‘Dark Knight’ Director Christopher Nolan Is ‘Phenomenal,’ Cillian Murphy Says

‘Red Lights’ star looks forward to Nolan’s final Batman film, as well as a potential return to the ‘Tron’ universe. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz “The Dark Knight Rises” movie poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures PARK CITY, Utah — Despite photo and video leaks from the set, two trailers, one prologue and plenty of interviews, there are still several unanswered questions surrounding “The Dark Knight Rises.” Chief among them is the rumor that Cillian Murphy , who played the fear-mongering Scarecrow in “Batman Begins,” will return once more to Gotham City when Christopher Nolan’s final round with the Caped Crusader rolls in front of audiences in July. For his part, Murphy has kept his lips shut on any surprise “Rises” cameos — though given that his psychotic psychiatrist Jonathan Crane appeared very briefly at the beginning of “The Dark Knight,” a return appearance for Nolan’s final Batman movie seems likely. But even if he doesn’t terrorize Bruce Wayne one last time, Murphy is very eager to see what Nolan has in store for the trilogy’s conclusion. “I’m looking forward to it,” the actor told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival , where he’s promoting his paranormal thriller “Red Lights” from director Rodrigo Cortes. “Any film that Chris Nolan makes … he’s got a good track record. He makes amazing movies.” “It’s been a huge honor to work with him,” Murphy added. “He’s just phenomenal.” One villainous turn Murphy was allowed to speak about a bit more freely was his all-too-brief appearance in “Tron Legacy.” The Irish actor had a very small but potentially crucial role as Edward Dillinger Jr., son of original “Tron” villain Ed Dillinger Sr., and it seemed as though he might have a bigger and badder part to play in subsequent “Legacy” sequels. “Talk about being in a movie for a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ [role],” Murphy laughed when his “Tron” cameo was brought up. “I was just such a fan of the original, and they asked me if I wanted to be in it. I said, ‘Absolutely. Anything you want.’ ” But as for whether or not he’ll come back for more “Tron,” Murphy remains unsure. “I don’t know,” he said. “It was just a buzz to be in that movie, even for [one scene].” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Emma Roberts Channels Ke$ha In ‘Celeste And Jesse’

‘I got to bring together every pop star and fold it into one person,’ actress tells MTV News. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Elijah Wood and Emma Roberts Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Emma Roberts has always been a friend to MTV News, particularly at the Sundance Film Festival . Last year in Park City, we were fairly sure that we got Emma to drop a massive “Scream 4” spoiler — namely that she wasn’t going to survive her encounter with Ghost Face — and we were right … partially. At this year’s Sundance, our conversation with Emma was not so grim. The up-and-coming actress has a starring role in “Celeste and Jesse Forever,” a comedy about a divorcing couple struggling to maintain their friendship during an intense period of transition. In the film, which also stars co-writer Rashida Jones , Roberts goes against type as a pop star named Riley, who is an amalgamation of various musical icons. But according to the actress, there’s one particular singer she took her cues from. “I got to bring together every pop star and fold it into one person,” she told MTV News about her role in the film. “[But] my hair is definitely Ke$ha . I have these fabulous long, blond, slightly ratty extensions. I miss those dearly.” Of course, hair alone does not make a pop star. Roberts had to sing and dance to get into the role, rocking out with a dance anthem that was co-written by Jones herself. “We recorded a song that Rashida co-wrote with a bunch of people, and it’s just wildly entertaining and inappropriate and it’s kind of a dance anthem. It was fun,” she said. “You know when you listen to songs and they yell at you to have fun? That’s kind of what we decided to do, because I love being yelled at to have fun and dance!” Who doesn’t? ‘Hobbit’ Brings ‘Impending Doom’ To Middle-Earth, Elijah Wood Says

‘There is gravity, but there’s a lot of fun as well,’ actor tells MTV News of Peter Jackson’s latest Tolkien adaptation. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Elijah Wood Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — Despite all odds, Frodo Baggins is back in the Shire … or was back, rather. Elijah Wood reprises his iconic role as the ring-bearing Frodo in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” serving as a book-ending character in scenes that bridge the gap between director Peter Jackson’s latest trip to Middle-earth and his previous one in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Wood’s role is a less prominent one in “The Hobbit,” so much so that with 100 days left of filming, his work on the film is finished. “I had my revisitation rights, and now they’ve been revoked,” he joked when MTV News caught up with him at the Sundance Film Festival . Though Wood’s return to the realm of dwarves, elves and men has reached its conclusion, the actor spent enough time on the New Zealand set to get a real sense of what “The Hobbit” is going for. Specifically, he spoke to the fact that Jackson’s latest adaptation stays true to the lighter tone of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, largely because “the stakes aren’t as high” as they were in “Lord of the Rings.” “It’s more whimsical, magical, and a little bit more comedic,” Wood said. “The dwarves are funny and they’re kind of bumbling and they’re really playing a lot of that aspect up.” But even if the situation in “The Hobbit” isn’t as dangerous as the world-ending scenario posed in “Rings,” Wood said Jackson has managed to weave a sense of “impending doom … into the construct of the piece.” “There is gravity,” he insisted, “but there’s a lot of fun as well.” For his own part, Wood is just grateful that he got a chance to step back into Frodo’s furry feet one last time, an experience he likened to time travel. “It felt like stepping back into time,” he said of reprising Frodo. “We shot some stuff in Hobbiton, and the last time I was in Hobbiton, I was 19 … and I’m 30 now. It was a very bizarre step through a portal into time. But it was beautiful. It was great to be a part of it.” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Kardashian Magazine, Barbie Deals Fall Apart

Mother Kris Jenner’s demands for editorial control reportedly kill family’s deal with American Media Inc. By Jocelyn Vena Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian Photo: Denise Truscello/ WireImage Is the Kardashian brand in a deep dekline ? It seems that several of the family’s in-the-works projects are no longer in the works. The New York Post is reporting that Kris Jenner’s demands have killed a deal that would have seen publishers American Media Inc., the company behind The National Enquirer and Star, creating a Kardashian-themed magazine. Sources say that mama Jenner tried to play hardball with the publishers, demanding that she get full editorial approval when it comes to Kardashian-related content in any and all of the magazines the company publishes. “AMI chief David Pecker made it clear that there was no way he was going to tell his editors what stories they could and couldn’t do,” a source explained, adding that the company “balked” at her stipulation. Perhaps in response, Star magazine recently published a cover story claiming that the late Robert Kardashian is not Khloe’s biological father . Speaking to MTV News, a source close to the negotiations took no issue with the accuracy of the story, hinting that the deal is indeed dead in the water. A rep for the family told the Post, “Kris has never had a conversation with AMI regarding this issue [of her demands]. But the allegations contained in the Star article about Khloe not being a Kardashian are completely fabricated, false and untrue. Robert Kardashian is absolutely her biological father, so of course she was upset over their story.” It’s not the only blow the Kardashian brand is being dealt. According to previous reports, the ladies had been in talks with Mattel to work on their own Kardashian-themed Barbie dolls . It seems, however, that those plans have also been shelved. A rep for Mattel told MTV News, “As popular as the Kardashian sisters are, at this point in time we are not manufacturing Barbie-branded Kardashian dolls.” Related Photos Kim Kardashian And Kris Humphries: A Whirlwind Romance Kourtney Kardashian: A Year In Photos The Evolution Of: Kim Kardashian

Peter Jackson Explains ‘Hobbit’/’Lord Of The Rings’ Link

Director tells MTV News at Sundance how he plans to keep his latest journey to Middle-earth consistent with the ‘Rings’ trilogy. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Peter Jackson at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — The first trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” made it quite clear that Middle-earth hasn’t changed much in the years since Peter Jackson concluded his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. That’s not a complaint, mind you — fans have come to know and love Jackson’s interpretation of the J. R. R. Tolkien fantasy epic with the same passion they have for the source material. When it comes to “The Hobbit,” in other words, change is not necessarily welcome. Speaking with MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival , Jackson explained that it was always his intention to keep “The Hobbit” tonally and visually consistent with the “Lord of the Rings” films. “We wanted it to be a part of the five-film series,” he explained. “Fortunately, Tolkien wrote a lot of extra material in the appendices of ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ where he himself kind of tied the two stories together, 20 or 30 years after the publication of ‘The Hobbit.’ So we’ve been able to use some of that material.” But even though Jackson’s “Hobbit” isn’t “as much of a children’s story as the original book was,” he’s worked hard to make sure the films still “have some humor” to them. For example, Jackson promised that “some of the songs [from the novel] have made their way in there.” Fans can get their first taste of those tunes in the “Hobbit” trailer, when the dwarves gather in Bilbo Baggins’ humble abode to sing a somber song. Finding that balance between staying true to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy while allowing the “Hobbit” films to stand on their own has been an enjoyable challenge for Jackson, who is more than thrilled to once again be dabbling in dwarves and dragons. “I’m enjoying the movie [as much as the fans], which is the thing that I’m really excited about,” he said. “I love going to work every day. I love shooting it. In February, we start another 100 days of shooting, so by about July, we’re done. We will have shot both movies by that stage.” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” storms into theaters December 14. Lana Del Rey’s ‘SNL’ Set Defended By Andy Samberg

‘ ‘Video Games’ is a great song,’ he tells MTV News at Sundance about Del Rey’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ appearance. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — The critics have not been kind to Lana Del Rey following her recent performance on “Saturday Night Live.” “Wack-a-doodle” was how Eliza Dushku described it, while actress Juliette Lewis likened the performance to “watching a 12-year-old in their bedroom when they’re pretending to sing and perform.” At times, it seems that just about everybody has it in for Del Rey. But “SNL” castmember Andy Samberg is not so quick to criticize. Speaking with MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival — where he’s busy promoting his romantic dramedy “Celeste and Jesse Forever” — Samberg acknowledged the outcry against Del Rey but took the opportunity to compliment her. “People gave her a lot of crap. I saw it online. BriWi,” he said when asked about Del Rey, referring to “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams’ assessment of the performance as “one of the worst outings in ‘SNL’ history.” “But ‘Video Games’ is a great song,” Samberg added. Also there to offer support was Samberg’s “Celeste and Jesse” co-star Rashida Jones, who doesn’t envy anybody who has to grace the pressure-filled “SNL” stage. “It’s a tough venue,” she said. “You’re not actually performing in front of an audience; you’re performing in front of cameras. But I didn’t see it, so I don’t know.” “Yeah, I didn’t see it either, so I can’t really speak to it,” Samberg quickly added, followed by a long pause and an uncomfortable look. (Perhaps there’s something he’s not telling us … ) Samberg and Jones aren’t the only two who have come to Del Rey’s defense. Daniel Radcliffe, who served as “SNL” host during the singer’s appearance, has already condemned the way people criticized her. “It was unfortunate that people seemed to turn on her so quickly,” Radcliffe told the British media earlier this week. “I also think people are making it about things other than the performance. … If you read what people are saying about her online, it’s all about her past and her family and stuff that’s nobody else’s business. I don’t think [the performance] warranted anywhere near that reaction.
