‘Hunger Games’ Director Unpacks VMA Footage

Gary Ross says Jennifer Lawrence will help him give viewers the same ‘visceral experience’ as the books. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate While the “Hunger Games” teaser trailer lit up the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, director Gary Ross was back in North Carolina, his head space not so much occupied with Lady Gaga in drag and Lil Wayne’s long dreads as it was with Katniss Everdeen and the dystopian nation called Panem. Ross is still in the midst of shooting his adaptation of “The Hunger Games,” but last week, with the teaser set to debut at the VMAs, he took the time to touch base with MTV News via Skype to give us his exclusive commentary about the footage. Katniss Vision Suzanne Collins’ novel is a first-person tale, and it’s clear from the teaser Ross is striving to capture that same sort of immediate access into Katniss’ head. “I think one of the most important things when you adapt a book like this is to give people the experience they really had when they read it — the same kind of visceral experience they had,” he explained. “I think [the reason] everybody felt so strongly in what Suzanne did was that they were with this character, they understood her, they were in her shoes, they were in her head. It was such an intense first-person experience. My job in making a film is first and foremost to reflect that. “How do we get inside Katniss’ head? How do we feel what she’s feeling? How do we become her?” Ross continued. “The first thing that allows you to do that is Jennifer Lawrence, because she’s such an unbelievable actor. She has so much depth and power and talent and sophistication and sensitivity and subtly that she’s become Katniss Everdeen synonymously. I hope people feel about Jen and Katniss at the end of this three-book cycle the way they feel about Daniel Radcliffe and Harry Potter — that they’ve become very, synonymous with one another.” Get “Hunger Games” experts’ analysis of the teaser. Gale’s Voiceover That voiceover you hear during the trailer? That’s Katniss’ District 12 pal Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth). And Ross has a very specific idea in mind about the importance of making Gale a part of this initial footage (and not Katniss’ Hunger Games companion, Peeta Mellark). “As everyone knows, Gale is an enormous part of Katniss’ life, but he’s not as big a part of the first book as he is the subsequent books,” the director told us. “I think he’s very, very present and he’s tremendously important, but of course we shift into the Capitol and then the arena, where Peeta ends up playing a more prominent role. But he’s in her head, he’s in her life, he’s something that echoes with her throughout the games, as any reader of the book knows, so he plays an obviously prominent role.” The Difficulty of the Shoot Though Ross and his team didn’t have to contend with giant fireballs in the woods, as Katniss does in the first look, the filmmaker revealed that the set in the North Carolina forest posed quite a challenge to the production. “This was like shooting in Vietnam,” he said. “I felt like I was making ‘Apocalypse Now.’ The thing was so rigorous. We spent something like six weeks outside in the jungle every day, hiking up and down mountains with cameras and in the mud and in driving rain storms. We all felt it, but nobody felt it as much as Jen did. It’s been an intense physical experience for her.” Just Getting Started While Ross was proud to show off this initial footage, he told us this is only the beginning and that there are a few scenes and characters in particular that he can’t wait for people to see in the future. “We’re still shooting, so unfortunately, it’s just a teaser,” he said. “We could only give you a little bit, because we’re still down here making the movie. I’ve got to leave in half an hour and shoot. But there’s a lot of things to come that I think are going to be hugely epic and very emotional and incredibly powerful. I think that we’ve done wonderful things with the mutts. I think that we’ve done a tremendous job bringing the Capitol to life, and I think that’s going to be really, really exciting for people to see. And all the performances! Wait till you see Stanley Tucci do Caesar Flickerman.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . VMA Main Stage Designer Aimed To Blow Minds With Set

‘It looks more like a big city and less like a stage,’ Florian Wieder explains. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown performs at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Film Magic When you settled in on the couch at home on Sunday night to watch the 2011 Video Music Awards , it probably felt like you were going back to the future. As in years past, the main stage for the show was a visual spectacle. This year the theme was time travel, and the stage’s designer was intent on making you feel as if you were on a mind-tripping journey. “We met up half a year ago and [VMA Executive Producer Jesse Ignjatovic] came up with the idea to create a time tunnel,” explained VMA main stage production designer Florian Wieder of the psychedelic set that looked like a cross between an alien landing ship, the floor of a 1970s disco and the baddest midnight laser-light show ever. “That’s one of the reasons why the whole design is based on a tunnel that is right in the center of the stage.” Like the pre-show , which shared some of the same curvy, intergalactic whimsy, the main broadcast mixed undulating wave forms with bright, pop-art-style colors and a black and white theme to set the stage for a galaxy of performers, including Adele, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Kanye West, Beyonc

‘The Help’ Weathers Irene To Hold #1 Box Office Spot

Emma Stone and company fend off ‘Colombiana’ and ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.’ By Ryan J. Downey Emma Stone in “The Help” Photo: DreamWorks “The Help” managed to fend off competition from a new action movie, a horror flick and a comedy as the overall box-office suffered from stormy weather on the East Coast. The adaptation of the popular novel took in another $14.3 million over the weekend to remain at number one with a $96.6 million total. The Box Office Top Five: 1. “The Help,” $14.3 million 2. “Colombiana” $10.3 million 3. “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” $8.6 million 4. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” $8.6 million 5. “Our Idiot Brother” $6.5 million Hurricane Irene certainly affected box-office receipts, according to studio estimates released Sunday. Ticket sales were down roughly 23 percent compared with the same period last year. AMC theaters closed all of its theaters in New York, Virginia, Philadelphia, Marlyand and D.C. while Clearview Cinemas and Regal Cinemas closed many locations as well, The Los Angeles Times reported. “The Help” has been in theaters for three weeks now and will certainly cross the $100 million mark domestically soon. Zoe Saldana, whose supporting turns in “Avatar” and “Star Trek” have made her a fan favorite, stars in “Colombiana,” the latest female driven action flick from Luc Besson. The filmmaker behind “Leon: The Professional” and “La Femme Nikita” served as co-writer and producer on the movie (it was directed Olivier Megaton), which has suffered from unfavorable reviews. The revenge-driven tale which stars Saldana as a drug dealer’s daughter turned assassin was #2 at the box office with a $10.3 million debut. “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” is another movie with a famous director as co-writer and producer. Guillermo del Toro told Comic-Con audiences that the original “Afraid…,” which was a television movie he saw as a kid, was one of the scariest things he’d ever seen. Katie Holmes stars in the creepy-house centered remake, which took in just $8.6 million in its debut to land at #3. “Our Idiot Brother” was the only of the weekend’s bigger new releases to receive mostly favorable reviews from critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes , but it opened with the worst box-office receipts. The Paul Rudd comedy earned just $6.5 million. This weekend’s new release schedule includes espionage thriller “The Debt.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Our Idiot Brother.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Britney Spears And Jo Calderone: A VMA Romance?

Lady Gaga’s male alter ego even got fresh with Brit after her VMA tribute. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Britney Spears and Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone backstage at the 2011 VMAs Photo: Getty Images On Sunday night at the 2011 Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga ‘s alter ego Jo Calderone met the princess of pop herself, Britney Spears . Gaga, in full drag as Calderone , and Spears had a bit of a VMA romance, sharing kind words — and even swapping spit. “It was interesting, her character,” Spears later told MTV News about the encounter, even dishing how the kiss between the two took place. “We got onstage and we felt it out.” Spears, of course, has already kissed a famous pop star on the VMA stage, when she and Madonna locked lips back in 2003. And it’s that kind of free spirit that Calderone noted in his speech about the singer. “She taught us all how to be fearless, and the industry wouldn’t be the same without her,” Calderone said when he not only kicked off the tribute to the star, but also later presented her with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. After a troupe of dancers, who performed dance routines to everything from ” … Baby One More Time” and “Crazy” to “Toxic” and “Do Somethin’,” left the stage, Calderone and Spears came face to face, and lips to lips. Although Spears seemed fine with the initial kiss, when he tried to make a few more advances, Spears rebuffed him with a big smile on her face. He took it like a gentleman, adding, “I don’t want Gaga to get pissed.” So was Gaga completely Calderone the whole time? “She’s in full character,” Spears later added. “Yes, definitely.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Bruno Mars, Russell Brand Pay Tribute To Amy Winehouse At VMAs

Mars performed a 1950s-style cover of ‘Valerie.’ By Gil Kaufman Bruno Mars performs at the 2011 VMAs Photo: FilmMagic Amy Winehouse never made it to the stage of the VMAs in her lifetime, but on Sunday night, some of her friends and admirers paid tribute to the “Rehab” singer a month after her death. “She was a mate of mine and tragically this year we lost her,” said pal Russell Brand, who penned a loving note to the troubled British crooner following her death. “First time I met her, she was kind of like a daft, dopey person, just wandering around a little bit crazy, like a lot of people who are drawn to big cities with a peculiar, unknowable talent.” Though he remembered that she seemed like an “ordinary girl” (with “extraordinary hair,” mind you) at first, Brand recalled watching her perform and realizing that he was witnessing a rare, amazing talent. “This is not just another London chancer, not just another person milling about waiting to be famous,” he said. “What is this incredible sound? This timeless sound like a roar from the guts of humanity? The kind of voice that Billie Holiday sung with, the kind of voice that Ella Fitzgerald sung with.” He started really paying attention after that, realizing that she was a “genius,” though one who, like Brand in the past, struggled with the disease of alcoholism and drug addiction. Brand also alluded to the huge influence Winehouse had on such contemporary artists as VMA winners Adele , his own missus, Katy Perry , Lady Gaga and 2010 VMA performer Florence and the Machine . The musical section of the tribute had Bruno Mars digging into the Winehouse cover of the Zutons’ “Valerie,” taking the stage in a sharp blue sharkskin suit, his hair in an impressive pompadour as he rocked his best 1950s sock-hop look. Backed by a big band that included a three-piece string and horn section — with Amy’s name inside of a heart emblazoned on the drummer’s bass drum. The big, bouncy tune was accompanied by some pop-art-style images of Winehouse that filled the big screen at the back of the stage, which alternated with some Roy Lichtenstein-type comic-book-inspired graphics. Adele was singing along in her seat, and during the breakdown, the horn section came in around a vintage mike and sang some doo-wop backing vocals under a single spotlight in a scene straight out of “Grease.” Doing a little James Brown-style side-to-side shuffle and busting out some fancy “American Bandstand” footwork, Mars ended with a shout-out, singing, “Say Amy, oh Amy/ I love you darling, I love you darling/ Say Amy, whoa Amy, we’ll miss you baby.” Also along to pay homage to the “Rehab” singer was legendary crooner Tony Bennett, who introduced some never-before-seen footage of the unlikely pair recording a cover of “Body and Soul” at London’s Abbey Road Studios for his upcoming Duets II album. Bennett, one of the last people to ever record with Winehouse, said he too recognized the rare beauty of her gift. The ageless icon said Winehouse was a “true” jazz artist who most definitely had “it.” The video footage of the two singing together was bittersweet, with Winehouse looking healthy and alert, twirling her hair coquettishly as she matched him note-for-note on the standard. Wearing one of the plaid sweaters from her Fred Perry fashion collection , her hair in a signature bouffant, a smiling Winehouse held her own with Bennett, trading lines and sharing a warm hug at the end of their session. The Bennett/Winehouse single and video will be released by Columbia Records on September 14, Amy’s birthday, in support of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, established by the late singer’s family to help a number of charities connected with children and young people. Winehouse , known for the depth and power of her soulful voice, will be remembered by fans and peers for her awe-inspiring talent and classic hits such as “Rehab,” “Back to Black,” “Me & Mr. Jones” and “You Know I’m No Good.” She died last month at the age of 27 of yet-undisclosed causes in her London apartment. On Tuesday, Winehouse’s family released a statement saying that toxicology reports found no traces of illegal substances in her system.
