REO beat was passed up by Kanye West, Nas and Drake before ending up on VMA performer’s album, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Lil Wayne Photo: MTV Behind the Beats: Ramon “REO” Owens As an up-and-coming producer, having Kanye West, Nas and Drake pass up on your beats can be dejecting, but Ramon “REO” Owens proves that persistence pays. After crafting a beat nearly three years ago, the 30-year-old finally got his instrumental placed on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV as the deluxe bonus track “Mirror,” featuring Bruno Mars. “Kanye heard it, Drake heard it, and it already had the Bruno [hook],” he said. “Basically, Nas had it for a while, and it just ended up in the hands of Wayne and he loved it.” With the help of Atlantic Records A&R Mike Caren, REO, who producers in tandem with his group the Soundkillers, was able to get his beat in the hands of some heavy-hitters. Originally, his goal was to land placement on ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but had to settle for Tha Carter IV instead. REO said his placement boiled down to one thing: luck. “It’s to the point that they record so many songs over the time period that they’re making the album, so you just hope to God that your song resonates with everybody that has to yes it,” he told Mixtape Daily. While many online reports are crediting Bruno Mars’ production outfit the Smeezingtons with production on the track, REO insists that by the time Tha Carter IV is released at midnight after the VMAs — where Wayne will also perform — and the CD’s liner notes revealed he will be properly credited as the producer and the Smeezingtons as writers on the song. Though REO was informed that his song had made the album, he didn’t believe it until C4 leaked Wednesday, and he still doesn’t quite believe it. “I’m still kinda paranoid until I pick up that damn CD myself,” he said. On the aptly titled track, Wayne gets reflective. The sample-free instrumental features an eerie wail in the background and a smothered kick- and snare-drum pattern. Its appeal isn’t in its intricacy, but rather in its driving emotion. “I had to listen to it a few times because I’ve just been hearing my beat for so many years, and I was like, ‘Yo, this guy got off on that sh–,’ ” he said of Wayne’s performance. Bishop Eddie Long has released a statement in response to two of the men involved with the sexual misconduct case brought against the New Birth Missionary Baptist church pastor. As we previously reported, despite Long vowing to fight the chages the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum, but accusers Jamal Parris and Spencer LeGrande have decided to risk losing their settlement money by speaking to media about the case and their ordeal. It’s hard to believe that its been ten years since Aaliyah left us. Many of us remember exactly where we were when we heard the tragic news that Aaliyah’s life had been cut short by a plane accident in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001. Her memory will not be forgotten anytime soon. The singer-actress began her career in 1991 when her uncle, Barry Hankerson, signed her to Blackground Records. Three years later, her debut album, Age Ain’t Nothin’ But A Number , would be released. Audiences were immediately captivated by the teenager’s street-smart style and angelic voice. Her debut single, “Back & Forth,” topped the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop singles chart for three weeks. The follow-up single, a cover of the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You Are Love),” peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. With the release of her second album, 1996′s One In A Million , Aaliyah helped changed the sound of R&B and Hip-Hop thanks to her new collaborators, Missy Elliot and Timbaland. With singles like “If Your Girl Only Knew,” “One In A Million,” “Hot Like Fire,” and “4 Page Letter,” it was obvious that Aaliyah’s star was on the rise. In 1998, Aaliyah was invited to the Academy Awards ceremony where she performed the Oscar nominated song “Journey To The Past” from the film Anastasia. Later in 1998, Aaliyah released yet another single from a soundtrack. This time it was “Are You That Somebody” from the Eddie Murphy film Dr. Doolittle . The single would become one of Aaliyah’s most popular with its stellar production and highly choreographed video. Two years later the singer would add the title of “actress” to her resume when she starred in the film Romeo Must Die opposite martial arts expert Jet Li. The film debuted at number two on its opening weekend and spawned two hit Aaliyah singles, “Come Back In One Piece” with DMX, and the chart topping “Try Again.” After completing work on Romeo Must Die , Aaliyah went straight to work on the vampire film Queen Of The Damned and was also slated to appear in the sequels to the popular film The Matrix . She also found time to put in work on her third album, the eponymously titled Aaliyah which was preceded by the mysterious and sexy video for “We Need A Resolution.” After wrapping up filming in the Bahamas for the Aaliyah album’s second single, “Rock The Boat,” Aaliyah and eight others were killed in a crash shortly after their plane took off from the island on August 25th, 2001. She was 22 years old. SMH, that reckless life will get you caught up. Yesterday, Christina Aguilera brought her son to the airport with a pretty nasty, extremely noticeable bruise on his eye. Needless to say, more than one media outlet posted those pics and ran with the assumptions. But one site took the reckleness too far. [A gossip website] published the photos with an accompanying headline, with a reference to child abuse. ‘CHILD ABUSE???? CHRISTINA AGUILERA’S SON IS PHOTO’D WITH A BLACK EYE!!!’ it read. The 30-year-old Beautiful singer is now threatening to sue the site. Christina’s lawyer Eric Greenspan sent a letter to the publication threatening legal action, calling their behaviour ‘reckless and unconscionable.’ He also explains how Max obtained the injury. ‘Christina is a wonderful mother and was not present in the park when Max fell and hurt himself,’ he wrote. ‘To imply that she had something to do with this incident, without any investigation on your part whatsoever, is reckless and unconscionable. ‘…We reserve all our client’s legal and equitable remedies for this reputable disparagement of our client’s character.’ He signs off in capped letters writing, ‘HAVE YOU NO SHAME!!!!’ Max was seen with the nasty looking bruise on his face as he clung onto his mother at LAX airport, yesterday. The black and blue shiner around the tiny tots’ eyes was so severe it had spread right to around to his cheeks. It is unknown how Christina’s son obtained the injury, but he was certainly finding comfort in the arms of his mother. Max held on tight to the platinum blonde singer as they made their way through terminal. At some points Christina cradled and cuddled the little one, wrapping him up in a warm blanket. The Beautiful singer looked ever inch the worried mother as she kept a close eye on her son. The two were joined by Christina’s boyfriend of eight months, Matthew Rutler, who was not far behind carrying bags and a child car capsule. With an album dropping in a couple of days, it is no shocker that The Game attempted to punch his way into relevancy. TMZ.com caught Game on camera screaming at his alleged girlfriend after she tried to break up a fight between him and an unknown man. You can see Game swing on someone but not if he connected.
