‘There are some people that listen to Drama that have never listened to any of my music,’ Curren$y tells Mixtape Daily . By Rob Markman Curren$y Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ WireImage Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : Verde Terrace Headliner : Curren$y and DJ Drama Standout Track : “Pininfarina” Real Spit : “At this point in my life, I’m looking at it like a hustle.” These are Curren$y ‘s opening bars on his DJ Drama -helmed Verde Terrace mixtape, and the line is far more than the usual rapper rhetoric. After cutting his teeth as part of both Master P’s No Limit Records roster and the Cash Money crew, New Orleans native Curren$y branched out on his own, independently releasing a series of eight solo tapes from 2007 to 2008. While he did hook up with former Roc-A-Fella co-founder Damon Dash to release his 2010 albums, Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk II, Spitta has navigated the past few years of his career without a co-sign. Still, the jet-loving MC saw the value in partnering up with mixtape king DJ Drama for Verde Terrace , which he released Tuesday (August 23). “There are some people that listen to Drama that have never listened to any of my music,” Curren$y told Mixtape Daily . “Some people are just getting hip to it now because they’re like, ‘If Drama f—in’ with it, I’mma have to give it a chance.’ ” On Verde, Curren$y rhymes over a mixture of original productions and tries his hand at other artist’s instrumentals. OutKast’s “Elevators” gets turned into “Smoke Sum’n,” and Jay-Z’s “Stick 2 the Script” is transformed as “Ways to Kill Em.” At the moment, Curren$y tells Mixtape Daily his favorite track is “Pininfarina,” a lyrical affair over Maybach Music Group’s “Pandemonium” beat. With that, Curren$y and his Jets crew add to his ever-growing discography of mixtapes. Jets, where haven’t they done yet? Mars, who is performing at Sunday’s show, throws an old-school house party in the clip. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his 2011 VMA promo Photo: MTV In Bruno Mars ‘ VMA promo, he hangs out with some fresh-looking hipsters while spinning tunes from folks like Ginuwine and Michael Jackson. The clip captures the joie de vivre of a good old-fashioned house party attended by fashionable folks who love to dance. “I think what you’re going to see is a little of my personality, a lot of my influences and a lot of people having a good time,” he told MTV News on the set. “I think that this year’s VMAs is a celebration and a party, and MTV did a great job of putting this commercial together.” In between takes, the party never stopped. Extras and dancers milled around, grooving to the tunes blasting throughout the NYC soundstage. Bruno chilled with everyone, making small talk with his fellow partygoers when the cameras weren’t rolling. The commercial itself is chockfull of great tunes, and when Mars was shooting the promo, he displayed his skills on the piano. So what tunes make Bruno Mars’ party set list? “This is my party; I’m DJing. I’m playing music that I grew up listening to,” he said. “I grew up listening to oldies, and so every time I hear, like, Little Richard or James Brown, the Police, it does something to me. It gets me in the party mood, and I’m just hoping to bring it to this party.” Not only is he set to perform at the VMAs — airing live Sunday at 9 p.m. from L.A. — he’s up for four Moonmen, including Video of the Year , Best Male Video and Best Pop Video for “Grenade.” “I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year — that’s the big-boy award.” Mars would be tickled to win Best Choreography for his feel-good track “The Lazy Song.” “You know what I’m excited for?” he said. “As much as I put blood, sweat and tears into ‘Grenade,’ I’m excited for ‘The Lazy Song,’ Best Choreography.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Tribute on Sunday’s show features footage of Winehouse and Bennett recording together this year. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Barry Brecheisen/ WireImage He was likely one of the last people to ever record with late singer Amy Winehouse, and now legendary singer Tony Bennett will pay tribute to the legacy of late Video Music Awards nominee Winehouse during a very special segment at the 2011 VMAs . Bennett, whose last VMA appearance was in 1993, will introduce the tribute, which includes footage of him recording “Body and Soul” with Winehouse this past March at Abbey Road Studios in London. “It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse, and when you listen to the recording of ‘Body and Soul,’ it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known,” Bennett said in a statement. The single and video will be released by Columbia Records on September 14, Amy’s birthday, in support of the Amy Winehouse Foundation, established by the late singer’s family to help a number of charities connected with children and young people. The song will also appear on Bennett’s Duets II, out September 20. “Our family is honored that the VMAs are giving Amy this wonderful tribute,” Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s father, said in a statement. “We know that Amy’s performance of ‘Rehab’ at the MTV Movie Awards played an important part in Amy’s worldwide success.” Winehouse, known for the depth and power of her soulful voice, will be remembered by fans and peers for her awe-inspiring talent and classic hits such as “Rehab,” “Back to Black,” “Me & Mr. Jones,” and “You Know I’m No Good.” She died last month at the age of 27 of yet-undisclosed causes in her London apartment. On Tuesday (August 23), Winehouse’s family released a statement saying that toxicology reports found no traces of illegal substance in her system. Bennett joins a roster of such performers as Lady Gaga , Adele, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Pitbull and Ne-Yo and Young the Giant. British pop phenom Jessie J, will serve as the night’s house artist and Selena Gomez has signed on as the celebrity host of the awards’ pre-show black carpet special. A number of other top names have also been added to the growing list of presenters at the show, including Nicki Minaj, Taylor Lautner, Drake, Joe Jonas, Jared Leto, Kevin Hart, and comedian JB Smoove of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm. Video of the Year nominee is packed with characters from the Beasties’ past. By James Montgomery Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride in the Beastie Boy’s “Make Some Noise” video Photo: Capitol If they’ve been anything over the course of their near-30-year career, the Beastie Boys have always been thorough, the kind of band that derives some sort of perverse pleasure from peppering their music with a sundry of pop-culture references, inside jokes and exhaustively sought, expertly placed samples. And because of that, they’ve managed to create their own rather insular world, the kind of place where Mantan Moreland hangs out with Ted Danson, where Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks” rubs elbows with Les Baxter’s “Prelude in C# Minor.” And luckily for all of us, each time they release an album, they pull the curtain back slightly, and invite us in for a drink. So it’s fitting that their “Make Some Noise” clip (which is up for Video of the Year at this Sunday’s VMAs) may very well be the most thorough thing they’ve ever done: a glorious, goofy thing that’s packed with references to their past, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it jokes and more celebrity cameos than Michael Jackson’s “Liberian Girl.” To wit, it’s certainly the only Video of the Year nominee to have begun life as a 30-minute mini-movie, and it’s the kind of thing that requires repeat viewings to thoroughly enjoy — which, given everything the Beasties packed into it (and the three-decade lead-up to its creation) is sort of the point, really. Back in April, immediately following its premiere (as a short film called “Fight for Your Right Revisited” ), we compiled an annotated guide to the galaxy of stars who make cameos — a list that includes everyone from Susan Sarandon to Danny Masterson — and the sly references that you might have missed. But now, with the VMAs right around the corner, we’ve gone back and watched “Make Some Noise” again, and boy, are we amazed at the amount of stuff we didn’t catch the first time through. Then again, such is the beauty of the video (and the Beastie Boys for that matter): They’re always willing to go the extra mile, with delightfully ridiculous results. Here now are even more moments from “Make Some Noise,” a video that takes a look back at the B-Boys’ rather glorious past, and one that, if anything, is definitely thorough. George Drakoulias Greek music producer/pal of early Beasties’ collaborator Rick Rubin, Drakoulias was immortalized in a line on the Paul’s Boutique track “Stop That Train” (“Bought a hot dog from who? George Drakoulias”). Fittingly, Drak shows up in “Make Some Noise,” selling Danny McBride’s MCA a street dog. Of course, in typical Beastie fashion, the role is actually played by actor Clint Caluory, and he’s officially credited as “Clint as Zach Galifianakis as George Drakoulias.” “Hey Ladies” Paul’s Boutique single that is consistently referenced in the “Make Some Noise” clip, particularly in the limo scene, where driver Will Ferrell sports a gold tooth (a reference to the line “She’s got a gold tooth, you know she’s hard-core”) and bangs on a cowbell (just like the song). The whole thing concludes with the Beasties getting booted from the backseat, just like the line “She’ll show you a good time, then she’ll show you the door.” All that’s missing is a cameo by Sadaharu Oh. “Hold It, Now Hit It” Single from the License to Ill era, it’s also referenced during the limo scene, when Mike D (or, you know, Seth Rogen) asks for some LSD-laced breath drops with the line “Pass that over here man, all right!” which, as any Beasties aficionado will tell you, is the same phrase uttered in the song. Johnny Ryall Titular star of the Paul’s Boutique track, he’s a homeless man with a rockabilly past and bread-bag shoes. In “Make Some Noise,” he’s played by actor Orlando Bloom, and while the big O isn’t rocking Wonder Bread slip-ons (or hand-me-down Pumas), he does sport a rather nice Def Jam windbreaker. Also displays impressive window-washing skills. “Shake Your Rump” Second track on Paul’s Boutique (and, in a lot of ways, the album’s official kickoff), it’s also referenced in the “Make Some Noise” limo scene, when MCA takes a rip off a nitrous-filled balloon, a nod to the line “In the back of the ride and bust with the whippit .” “She’s Crafty” Snotty License to Ill track on which the Beasties paid homage to several down-and-dirty females, including one who manages to rob them of all their possessions, including a mirror, a TV, a remote control and a skateboard. In a sublimely meta “Make Some Noise” moment, the Boys return the favor, swiping the skateboard back from a girl played by Adam Yauch’s real life daughter. Sir Stewart Wallace International man of mystery portrayed by Yauch in the Beasties’ epochal “Sabotage” video, Wallace shows up for just a second in “Make Some Noise,” piling out of the back of a cab and dropping his briefcase (which appears to be filled with bricks of cocaine) in the process. But this time around, it’s artist/director Mike Mills who steps into Sir Stew’s eternally pressed suit. What did we miss? Let us know in the comments!
