‘I’ve slowed down my style on this one,’ he tells MTV News of adjusting to 3-D for ‘Dark of the Moon.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Bay on the set of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures Toward the end of February of last year, as James Cameron’s “Avatar” was crossing the $700 million mark at the domestic box office on its way to a record-shattering worldwide total, “Transformers” director Michael Bay was still not convinced that 3-D was the true future of popcorn moviemaking. “I’ve seen some tests that look great on other movies. I just want to see how it looks on my footage… in terms of a lot of real stuff coming out of the frame, real dirt, real complicated little particles coming towards the lens,” he said at the time by way of revealing that he was considering a 3-D treatment for the third installment of his alien robot franchise. The fact that he’d even arrived at such a testing phase is a credit both to Cameron and “Transformers” exec producer Stephen Spielberg. “Jim Cameron, he’s like, ‘Mike, you got to do it in 3-D,’ ” Bay told MTV News recently. “Stephen Spielberg, he says, ‘Michael, you should do this in 3-D,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t know about the technology.’ ” In the end, Bay became convinced that the tech was solid. For “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,”he shot, by his own estimation, 60 percent of the finished film using 3-D cameras, another 15 percent consisting of all-digital 3-D shots and 25 percent footage converted from two dimensions to three. And while the director remains happy with the results, he did not mince words in talking about the challenges of working with 3-D cameras. “It’s hard with my style of shooting and taking [a camera] and strapping it to guys who are skydiving off buildings, and helmet cams,” he said. “It’s a technical nightmare. You don’t even want to tell your viewers how technically complicated this stuff is.” To accommodate the limitations of a 3-D presentation, Bay ended up adjusting his often kinetic approach to filmmaking. “I’ve slowed down my style on this one,” he explained. “There are longer shots, there are evolving shots, some shots are 45 seconds long, where you’re going in and through things. Where people say, ‘Oh, I can’t watch action with 3-D,’ it’s where 3-D was done poorly and your eye goes in and out, and if it goes fast, it’s when you get bad 3-D, because it screws with your head. Shot by shot, we’re transitioning the viewer. You can really feel the action in this. There were many celebrities who decided not to go to the BET Awards last night, among them Kanye West, Lil’ Kim, Jay-Z, and Rihanna (what a coincidence). The 2011 BET awards went down last night, Sunday June 26 at the Shrine auditorium in LA. Lets just say the greatest show on earth is still at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. Funny man Kevin Hart did his thing but even he could not save the BET Awards from becoming the EBT Awards. There were too many awkward and funny moments that it was hard for me to chose just a few. There were too many fashion fails and some serious epic fails that went down during the show. I decided to narrow it down to the fails that literally made people either uncomfortable or just with blank stares on their faces. Cherrelle & Alexander O’Neal performing “Saturday Love” – Why would BET pull Alexander O’Neal on stage to perform straight from Dr. Drew’s Rehab center. This performance was very crack-ish. Where are his teeth? Rocsi Diaz all purpose dress – Is it just me, or was Rocsi dressed like she was the star of Lion King on ice. I don’t know but everyone on twitter said she got the fit from Wet Seal. Maybe they gave her some free wears for the promo. Busta Rhymes brain vest – Now Busta is known for wearing some weird fits and last night was not unusual. Busta went rap Lady Gaga on us yesterday wearing a brain vest in the audience and becoming a human accordion during his performance with Chris Brown. Look at him now. Chris Brown Onesie Tuxedo – Yeah Chris Brown made the list again. Breezy played himself two times over when he joined Big Sean on stage wearing a onesie tuxedo. Chris Brown’s BET Awards fits were just awful. And what was he doing on that damn bike?? Lil Wayne American Flag boxers and One Sock – Weezy F. clearly does whatever he wants to do and during his “I’m On One” performance with DJ Khaled, Drake and Rick Ross Weezy skipped around the stage wearing American flag boxers and one black and white checker sock. Cee-Lo Green dressed as Patti LaBelle and cussing – Cee-Lo Green literally came out dressed like Patti Labelle. I mean even down to her permed out spike hair. You can tell Patti was loving it! Things went a bit south when The Dungeon Family member started cussing up a storm. BET didn’t catch any of the cuss words and I don’t think they intended on it. Viewers Choice Award – Tiffany Greene, a big Nicki Minaj fan, was chosen to give out the BET Viewers Choice Award. Things went left when the tablet said Chris Brown but the teleprompter said Rihanna. Then Drake ended up winning the award. However, at the end of the show Kevin Hart revealed that the winner really was Chris Brown. Once again the EBT awards know how to start some mess to keep their ratings up. Trey Songz drooling and slurping on Kelly Rowland’s neck – Trey Songz and Kelly Rowland just may have had one of the hottest performances of the night . I know I am not the only one who caught how Trey Songz had become a perverted old man at the end of the performance, trying to nibble on Kelly Rowland’s neck as they went down. Diggy Simmons dance number – I did not know Diggy Simmons had big plans to become the rapping Chris Brown. We were all hype about Diggy coming into the rap game because he could actually flow. Now he just totally put himself into the category of being a popcorn bubble gum artist. Nicki Minaj pretending she had competition – Nicki Minaj accepted her award and tried to deliver a speech pretending there was competition in the female rap category. The audience did not buy it one bit. Yet-unnamed victim ‘remains in serious condition but is expected to recover,’ Tech’s publicist tells MTV News in exclusive statement. By Rob Markman Tech N9ne (file) Photo: Raymond Boyd/ Michael Ochs Archives/ Getty Images Early this morning, a performer on Kansas City, Missouri, rapper Tech N9ne ‘s All 6s and 7s Tour was shot hours after a scheduled concert at Reno, Nevada’s Knitting Factory. According to reports from local news outlet KOLO TV , the victim — who has not yet been indentified — was shot at 1:27 a.m. in an alley outside the venue where the tour buses were parked. Though the victim is still unnamed, MTV News learned through a statement issued by a Strange Music publicist that the man who was shot is not signed to the label, but is a performer for one of the tour’s opening acts. “By all reports, the victim was talking on his phone when he was approached by 6 individuals who had not been in attendance at that evening’s show,” the statement reads. “Shortly after, shots were fired and the victim was struck multiple times. He was rushed to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition but is expected to recover.” Initial reports stated that the shooting took place “right after” Tech’s performance. The statement refutes that claim, saying the incident happened “nearly two hours after the show ended” and was “a random and senseless act of violence.” Police aren’t sure of the motive and believe close to 16 rounds were fired. Tech N9ne’s latest album, All 6s and 7s, was released June 7 and debuted at #4 on the Billboard albums chart . Network’s ‘Attack of the Show’ will pay tribute to the late ‘Jackass’ star. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Dunn on “Proving Ground” Photo: G4 Only a week after pulling Ryan Dunn’s G4 series “Proving Ground” from the schedule following his death, the network announced Monday (June 27) that it would resume airing the show next month. Beginning July 19, G4 will begin to play the remaining eight episodes in the series; only one episode aired earlier this month. That same night, a special “Attack of the Show” will be dedicated to the late “Jackass” star. The special will include stunts the TV star pulled for the network, as well as interviews with his friends and colleagues. “Ryan was an incredible talent who will be missed tremendously by his fans, including G4 viewers,” G4 president Neal Tiles said in a statement to MTV News. “With the support of Ryan’s family, we’ve decided to air the remaining episodes of G4’s Proving Ground and give his fans the opportunity to continue watching this series he was so passionate about.” Dunn died last week in a car accident in West Chester, Pennsylvania, along with his friend and “Jackass” production assistant Zachary Hartwell. It was later determined Dunn was legally drunk at the time of his accident. “All of us at G4 are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic news that Ryan Dunn has passed away,” a statement from G4 last week reads. “Ryan’s comedic wit and signature no-holds-barred approach made him an incredible talent and his work as host of G4’s Proving Ground was flawless. Ryan will be missed dearly by his legion of fans and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.” In the days since Dunn’s death, his friends have remembered him in blog posts and at a private memorial service . ‘Even the strongest of love meets destruction at some point,’ the ex-porn star tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Sasha Grey on the set of Eminem’s “Space Bound” video Photo: Eric Ford/On Location News There have been quite a few takes on the meaning Eminem’s “Space Bound” video, in which we see two sides of a suicidal, love-torn rapper. Since the clip hit iTunes on Friday, fans have taken to comment sections dishing out theories about its meaning. Some have said this is another depiction of Em’s relationship with ex-wife Kim Mathers, while others likened the clip to a video game. And Eminem ‘s co-star in the video, Sasha Grey, has her own take on the video. Grey, who no longer works in porn, is now expanding her acting chops. She appeared, as did Em, on the seventh season of HBO’s hit series “Entourage,” and though the two never met on set, she got the offer to star in “Space Bound” at the request of the video’s director, Joseph Kahn. The clip features alternate versions of the Detroit MC, one agitated and cynical in the company of his girlfriend (played by Grey), the other more pensive and calm. “You can read into it a few different ways, but I imagine one character is actually him, and the other is his subconscious,” Grey said. Things begin to take a turn for the worse when the rapper discovers the love of his life is cheating on him. He later attacks her, then turns a gun on himself and commits suicide with a single shot through the head. “Space Bound,” like “Love the Way You Lie” depicts a tumultuous relationship in which domestic violence once again is a topic. “Em simply becomes company for her, and she mistakenly takes advantage of that,” Grey says of her character. “Before each take, Joseph and I would talk a lot about her motives and attitude.
