Rihanna Gives Fans ‘Another Twist’ In ‘California King Bed,’ Director Says

Anthony Mandler discusses working with the superstar singer, with whom he’s collaborated more than a dozen times. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Getty Images Rihanna showed off her pale-hued softer side in her “California King Bed” video . A sweeping, romantic look at the demise of a relationship is perfectly encapsulated in the Anthony Mandler-directed clip. Rihanna and Mandler are certainly not strangers when it comes to collaborating, having made more than a dozen clips together, ranging from the fun “Only Girl (In the World)” to the dark “Russian Roulette.” When MTV News recently spoke to Mandler, he noted that he and Ri brought out a whole new side to the always-changing singer. “I think it’s something that is so unique about Rihanna whatever she’s doing, whatever character she’s playing, whatever side of herself she’s showing, she’s in it 1,000 percent,” he explained. “They’re all twists and variations on herself, and in each of them, the way she pushes the visual and the way she pushes the styling and the look of it, she really kind of gives them another twist on Rihanna. “And I think the song and the theme of this song, she wanted to obviously show a softer side, a lighter side, one that’s caught in maybe a tumultuous relationship,” he continued. “But not let the tumultuous relationship dominate the visual, really counterbalance it with tension-filled chaotic beauty.” Instead of finding a scenic location on which to shoot the video, they built their own set in order to have control over the elements of the video. Rihanna gave Mandler a “basic foundation,” and from there, he put his magic on what he describes as a “really pure beauty video with a story line underneath.” Having shot both a softer-edge Rihanna and a harder-edged one, Mandler weighed in on which he prefers. “There’s so much variety with her and it’s been such a journey with her,” he said. “It’s hard to say which one I enjoy more than the other. I just enjoy working with her, so whatever that means. … There are gray shades that are brilliant that I’m constantly discovering.” Related Artists Rihanna

What Is Lady Gaga Like? ‘Judas’ Co-Stars Weigh In!

‘Gaga’s a super cool girl from New York,’ Norman Reedus tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga Photo: Victor Chavez/ WireImage Lady Gaga is many things to many people. She’s a pop star, a fashionista and a voice for those who feel they can’t speak for themselves. In her video for “Judas,” she took on a new role: Mary Magdalene. MTV News caught up with both Judas ( Norman Reedus ) and Jesus ( Rick Gonzalez ) from the clip, and they shared what Gaga is really like to work with. “Gaga’s a super cool girl from New York,” Reedus said. “She’s religious; she does prayers. We have some mutual friends, I think. She says prayers with her people before she goes out onstage, I’ve heard, and she’s very much a group player. And she’s not weird at all. She’s actually an artist who believes in what she’s doing and really takes the bull by the horns and is not afraid to say what she wants to say.” His “Judas” co-star, Gonzalez, said that a lot of her coolness is reflected in her partnership with creative director Laurieann Gibson . “When I first met [Gaga], she was very passionate and very driven. I was really impressed and found a newfound respect for her, because she’s such a hardworking woman and so dedicated and very creative,” Gonzalez said. “And her, with Laurieann, they make such a great team together. “I think you’re going to see a lot more amazing things with them, ’cause they totally have this synergy,” he continued. “And I’ve overheard them say it: They’re totally going to do a lot more things together. So I’m excited to see what that’s stuff going to be. … It’s really impressive.” While a lot of the time Gaga seems to offend someone with what she’s doing, Reedus said that’s not her intention. “She’s cool enough where she’s just not trying to offend people to offend people. I mean, who does that? She’s actually super talented and she’s a machine,” Reedus said. “That girl works really, really hard. … I felt sort of lazy around her. It was kind of inspiring.” What’s your impression of Gaga? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga Gave Rick Gonzalez ‘Freedom’ To Play Jesus His Way In ‘Judas’

Actor tells MTV News that co-directors Gaga and Laurieann Gibson ‘gave me a lot of confidence.’ By Matt Elias Rick Gonzalez Photo: MTV News Just a day after Lady Gaga’s video for “Judas” debuted , fans and foes alike are still buzzing with reactions. That includes actor/rapper Rick Gonzalez, who plays Jesus in the video. For Gonzalez, the experience was somewhat surreal, beginning with his initial casting. “I’m sitting in my house, I get a call from my manager, [and] she says, ‘Lady Gaga wants you to be in the video,’ ” Gonzalez recalled to MTV News. “I’m like, ‘Oh, cool. Lady Gaga who?’ and she’s like, ‘Rick, the Lady Gaga.’ And I’m like, ‘Wow, OK.’ And the first thing that comes to my mind and what I tell her is, like, ‘How does she know I even exist?’ “They send a treatment over and I read it, and I was like, ‘Wow, I’m honored to be even a part of it.’ I really love the story and what she did and [where] she was thinking of going with it and I was really honored to be a part of it. So I was really stoked.” Once on set, Gonzalez said it felt more like a film than a music video. ” Laurieann Gibson, who directed along with Gaga — I mean, they really had great shots and they had this amazing huge production set up for the video,” Gonzalez said. “It really did feel that way. We were on a bike, on a flatbed truck, and I have Gaga behind me, and we’re like moving around the lot, just running around. So it was definitely grand in that scheme.” While Gonzalez had the honor of manning Gaga’s motorcycle in the opening shots, he was relieved that he didn’t have to actually drive it for the wide shots. “Those shots, that’s not me riding,” the actor revealed. “So the shots with me and her, we’re literally being dragged on a truck. I didn’t want the responsibility of dropping a bike with Gaga on it.” The actor developed newfound respect for Gaga after witnessing just how hands-on she was with all aspects of the clip. But there was one area that Gaga and co-director Gibson ceded to Gonzalez. “The beautiful thing about playing Jesus in the video was they really gave me the freedom to find it in my own way and they gave me a lot of confidence in that, and I was really impressed in Laurieann’s direction and just giving me the space and letting me find it,” Gonzalez said. He was equally impressed with how Gaga and Gibson communicated, which at times wasn’t even verbal. “I think the chemistry between Laurieann and Lady Gaga, it was interesting to watch because they were totally in sync with each other creatively, and I think that you’re going to see a lot more amazing things with them, ’cause they totally have like this synergy with them,” he predicted, adding, “And I’ve overheard them say they’re totally gonna do a lot more things together, so I’m excited to see what that stuff’s gonna be.” What do you think of Rick’s portrayal of Jesus in the “Judas” video? People either want to make you look bad, or want a check. One or the other, so it’s like, you don’t do that. Lady Gaga Was ‘Spontaneous’ On ‘Judas’ Set, Norman Reedus Says

Judas himself opens up to MTV News about the just-released video. By Jocelyn Vena Norman Reedus Photo: MTV News When Norman Reedus, who played the title character in Lady Gaga’s “Judas” video , stopped by the MTV News offices Friday (May 6), he told us Gaga had everyone on their toes on set — in the best way possible. “I like the lipstick part, because that was sort of last minute,” the “Walking Dead” star said. “She just jumped up [and was like], ‘I have this great idea. I’m gonna put lipstick in front of you, and right before you kiss Jesus, I’m going to pull out this gun, and I’m gonna pull the trigger, and then a lipstick’s [gonna come out], and then I’m going to put it on you like I’m enabling the kiss!’ “She looked at me like, ‘Is that cool?’ ” he continued. “And I’m like, ‘Rad.’ And we did it. I liked how she was so spontaneous.” Reedus’ other favorite scene is the opening shot, where Judas, Mary Magdalene (Gaga) and Jesus (Rick Gonzalez) are all on the road with their biker-gang disciples. “We got there the first day, and we all took motorcycle lessons [in a parking lot and] one of the disciples trashed his motorcycle up against the curb, which was hysterical,” he recalled. “So we did that, and then they cut off part of the freeway and actually cops would fly by us and section off the road. So we rode in a pack.” While Gaga didn’t actually have to drive one of the bikes, he said her stunts were quite awe-inspiring. “She wasn’t driving the bike, but she was riding on the back. … We were flying down the freeway, and she got up on the back … and was way off the back of the seat and hanging backwards and stuff,” he said. “Which was a daredevil move; it was pretty intense. She had all these jewels all over her, and every once and a while, you could see behind her bike just a trail of jewels dropping on the freeway. It was kind of magic.” Since Reedus has had about 24 hours to think about the video, he said it gets his seal of approval. “My reaction when I saw it? I was excited to see my motorcycle in it first off, ’cause that’s my bike that I ride, and I thought it was really good,” he said. “I thought that [co-director] Laurieann [Gibson] did a really good job and Gaga did a good job, and I know there’s a lot of work put into it, and I could see all the work on the screen, so I liked it.” What did you think of the video? President Obama: Bin Laden Death Photo Will NOT Be Released

Despite reports to the contrary, President Barack Obama emphatically said today that he will not release an Osama bin Laden death photo to the public. Photos taken after U.S. forces shot him dead Sunday clearly show the Al Qaeda leader’s bloody, bullet-ridden face, which plenty of people want to see. It appeared that the administration was on the cusp of releasing the graphic images, but Obama now says it’s not gonna happen for myriad reasons. In particular, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton both advised Obama against inciting a backlash against the U.S. Obama told 60 Minutes in an interview to air Sunday that “the risks outweigh the benefits” and that they wouldn’t quash conspiracy theories anyway. Some will “claim the photos are doctored anyway” and the risk is that the photos “will only serve to inflame public opinion in the Middle East.” The President continued his defense of not releasing the pictures: “Imagine how the American people would react if Al Qaeda killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet.” “Osama bin Laden is not a trophy – he is dead and let’s now focus on continuing the fight until Al Qaeda has been eliminated.” He makes a point . What do you think, though: Release the bin Laden pics?
