Mac Miller Makes It The Best Day Ever At Bamboozle

‘I’m just tryin’ to bring a show, man,’ Mac told MTV News just before his high-energy set at Friday’s festival kickoff. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: Brian Phares/MTV News ASBURY PARK, New Jersey — There’s only so much partying on Fifth Ave. that a man can do, so on Friday night, Mac Miller hit the Jersey Shore and threw an old-fashioned beach party. “I’m just tryin’ to bring a show, man. I want to bring a performance, I want to bring them into the Macadelic experience, ” Mac told MTV News hours before he took the stage at the Bamboozle music festival in New Jersey. Skrillex , Mike Posner, Incubus and Miller all took to Bamboozle’s main stage on the opening night of the three-day fest, and they didn’t disappoint. For Mac’s set, which began at 7 p.m. ET, the Pittsburgh MC brought a portion of his Macadelic Tour to concertgoers who had come to see an array of rock, rap and EDM artists. It was all high-energy when Miller, who was dressed in an “RIP MCA” tee, set things off with the title track from his #1 debut album, Blue Slide Park. From there, EZ Mac launched into “Don’t Mind If I Do” from his 2010 breakout tape, K.I.D.S. Always one to represent for his crew, Miller, his DJ, Clockwork, and hypeman Treejay bounced up and down to “My Team,” and then turned things up a notch with the rambunctious “Knock Knock,” all to the youthful crowd’s delight. While a majority of the Rostrum rapper’s catalog is centered on feel-good jams, he does show range on introspective cuts like “Angels (When She Shuts Her Eyes).” Even when he wasn’t ping-ponging frantically across the stage, the crowd responded to Miller’s more subdued tracks by waving their hands side to side, showing him that they too are capable of more than just getting crunk. Before he dove into “Best Day Ever,” Mac took a bit of a breather while old Miller family home movies played on a big screen. All the teenage girls cooed as they watched baby Mac open birthday presents and sing along to the Sugar Hill Gang’s seminal hip-hop track “Rapper’s Delight.” “I wanted to represent the music through visuals, I’ve always been a very visual person,” he explained to us before the show. “I wanted to use that to create the aesthetics of the show and show people what all of the songs mean to me and put them into that world.” Miller picked up the mood with the electric “Frick Park Market” and drew immediate crowd participation with the first line. After spitting, “My name Mac Miller,” the crowd responded right on time with a thunderous, “Who the f— are you?” It was a lesson on how to properly connect with your audience, one that’s invested in every word you rhyme. Last year when Miller dropped his now-gold-selling single “Donald Trump,” he promised to “take over the world,” and despite all of his success he still makes that vow at the end of each and every show. Last night was no different. After a 40-minute set, Mac sealed the deal with a spirited rendition of “Trump” and then marched off to continue to make good on his promise, one stage at a time. What Is Mac Miller’s ‘Pink Slime’ Project?

Pittsburgh MC remains tight-lipped on his upcoming collabo project on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, reporting by Sway Calloway Mac Miller on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News Mac Miller isn’t ready to start working on his sophomore album just yet, but he does have a few projects in the works. And though the Pittsburgh MC wouldn’t give much detail when he appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live” , he did drop a clue about one of these projects. “Everyone needs to pay attention for when the words ‘pink slime’ surface, just don’t even worry about it right now,” Mac teased while sitting on the “RFL” couch. He wouldn’t reveal whom he is working with on the “pink slime” project, but Miller did confirm that it is a collaborative effort. “I’ma just say, just keep watch — he’s gonna be pissed that I’m saying this, but you’re not gonna know who it is,” he said. Well, if “he’s gonna be pissed,” then that rules out a tag-team tape with Nicki Minaj right? Maybe it’s her Young Money boss Lil Wayne ; after all he did appear on Miller’s on Macadelic mixtape . Then again, so did Cam’ron, Juicy J and Kendrick Lamar. There is no release date for “pink slime,” but it will come before Mac’s Blue Slide Park follow-up. “As far as the album, to be honest, I haven’t even thought about it yet,” he said. “I need some time, man; I need to put together something. I’m releasing music, I have songs on songs on songs; I record every day.” Whom do you think Mac Miller is working with on his “pink slime” project? Tell us in the comments. Mac Miller Gets Trippy With Lil Wayne And Cam’ron On Macadelic

‘It’s the story of someone growing up, trying to figure out who he is,’ MC tells Mixtape Daily of his new mixtape. By Rob Markman Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliner : Mac Miller Representing : Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Mixtape : Macadelic Real Spit : How do you follow up a #1 independent album and a sold-out tour? If you’re Mac Miller , you treat your fans to a free mixtape. On Friday (March 23) the Pittsburgh spitter dropped Macadelic, a trippy ride through the psyche of a fun-loving MC who is adept at expressing his innermost feelings. “It’s like the story of someone who is growing up, trying to figure out who he is and trying to figure out what he’s supposed to do in the world and how he’s gonna change it,” Mac told Mixtape Daily. “I think it’s a great piece because it’s a great part of my career, it’s a great time right now and I feel like I been making mixtapes for five years, so this one is very special to me.” Over the thudding, bass-rattling sound bed of “Amnesia,” Mac cautiously drowns his crumbling love life in a cloudy codeine cup. “This is real girl, don’t be scared, it’s only fair/ I warn you love’s a drug that can kill you,” he hazily raps. The love-as-a-drug theme continues on “Vitamins.” Over a dreamy Big Jerm beat, Mac poetically recalls an addictive lovemaking session that leaves him all out of sorts in the aftermath. Then with foggy vocals, Miller seeks comfort for his growing pains on “Clarity.” “It’s a lot different from anything I’ve ever done,” Mac told MTV News backstage at the mtvU Woodies earlier this month. “In my past projects, I always thought about them a lot, like, ‘Where are the party jams? Where are the jams that are fun?’ ” Apparently Mac’s days aren’t always soundtracked by “Donald Trump” and “Party on Fifth Ave.” Throughout the tape the Blue Slide Park rapper continually contemplates his life’s purpose in the face of his growing fame. “Sometimes I wonder who the f— I am,” Mac rhymes at the start of “The Question.” The self-reflecting tune gets quite the boost from Young Money boss Lil Wayne, who makes a surprise appearance at the end of the track. Weezy spits a free-associative verse in which he affectionately shouts out his new machine gun, which he strangely compares to a newborn baby. Macadelic isn’t completely pensive, though; there is the Cam’ron-assisted “Ignorant,” which has Miller rapping about his gold Rolex and weed habits alongside the Dipset captain. “Lucky Ass Bitch” is another winner, thanks to producer Lex Luger’s kinetic bounce and Juicy J’s classic vocal contribution. On “Desperado,” Mac flexes his MC muscle, with the 20-year-old rhyme-slinger spitting some of his best rhymes over ID Labs’ Wild West-inspired production. In short, Macadelic has something for everyone. “I was trying to make a complete project, but on this project, all I wanted to do is just say what was on my mind,” he said. “I just worried about saying what I wanted to say, and I felt like there were a lot of things that I wanted to get off my chest, and this mixtape was the way to do it.” Joints to Check For: “Vitamins”: “The concept is that this drug is actually love. It’s a drug that I’m taking, so all the emotions and the feelings that are coming from this said drug are actually coming from love.” “Ignorant”: “I was in Harlem because I’m a huge Big L fan. And Cam hit me, he saw me Instagramming pictures, he said, ‘What are you doin’ in Harlem?’ I said, ‘Chillin’.’ And he said ‘Alright, I’m about to have someone come get you.’ So I went over to his crib, we got in the studio.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Suspect In Viral Video Attack Turns Self In To Pennsylvania Police

UPDATE: A teenager wanted by the FBI on adult charges in Atlanta is in custody after turning himself in to Erie, Pennsylvania police on Wednesday night. Dareal Demare Williams, 17, turned himself in at 10:30 a.m., according to GoErie.com. He was turned over to the FBI. The FBI said he was believed to be staying with friends and relatives in the Erie area. PREVIOUS: FBI agents have identified the third Atlanta gang member who they say was videotaped beating a 20-year-old gay man in Atlanta’s Pittsburgh community earlier this month. The videotaped attack was posted online and went viral. The AJC reports that Dareal Damare Williams is wanted for his part in the Feb. 4 robbery and attack on Brandon White. FBI agents in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania said they believe that Williams, 17, is hiding out in the Erie, Pennsylvania area and have issued an alert in western Pennsylvania. Mayor Kasim Reed raised an Atlanta Crime Stoppers reward several times. The reward is currently $25,000. Police said the responding tips led to the arrest of Christopher Cain, 19, a week after the incident. On Feb. 17, 19-year-old Dorian Moragne turned himself in to police. All three teens are said to be members of a neighborhood gang called 1029 Jack City or Pittsburgh Jack City. The 1029 represents the address of the gang’s hangout, 1029 McDaniels Street. Anyone with information of Williams’ whereabouts are asked to call Atlanta Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477 or Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers at 1-800-472-8477. Anonymous calls are accepted, and anyone offering information leading to Williams’ arrest and conviction is eligible for the reward money. Read the full story at the AJC.com. A 20-year-old victim who was brutally beaten by a gang of men has spoken out about his ordeal. Brandon White, who is openly gay, says he just wants the men who attacked him to be held accountable for their actions. Footage of the homophobic assault, which was uploaded to WorldStarHipHop.com by his attackers, shows White being beaten to the ground as the gang shout out anti-gay slurs. After its initial posting, the video went viral, surfacing on YouTube, The Smoking Gun and The Drudge Report. White, who described his attackers as “monsters” at a news conference Wednesday in Atlanta, says at first he did not want to watch the video because he was “embarrassed.” White says he wants “justice to be done because he deserves it.” “If a straight person can walk into a store and not have a problem then I should be able to do the same thing,” says White. “I could have died that day.” The video depicts the attack as White left the JVC Grocery and Deli on the corner of Delevan and McDaniel streets last Saturday. The men punch and kick the victim. One person tosses a tire onto the victim. As he is beaten, an onlooker yells “no more fa**ots in Jack City,” repeatedly, which, according to multiple sources including The Smoking Gun, is an apparent reference to a local gang located in the Pittsburgh neighborhood. “I feel I was violated,” says White. “The scars run deeper than anyone will know. The physical pain, I can get over that. My thing is: Who’s to say they won’t come after me again? Who’s to say they won’t kill me?” White has spoken with Atlanta police and the Federal Investigators are looking into the attack. U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates said her office is looking into potential civil rights violations based on sexual orientation. Unfortunately, Georgia does not have a state hate crimes statute. An Atlanta gay activist says this is strong evidence why Georgia needs anti-hate crime legislation. “There were gay slurs thrown toward him. There were punches. There were kicks,” said activist Devin Barrington-Ward. “These young men committed a hate crime. There shouldn’t be a debate about that.” A rally is scheduled to be held in the Pittsburgh neighborhood at 10am Saturday to highlight the issue of hate crimes against the against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community. Police are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible for the attack, and are asking anyone who has any information to call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477. Callers can remain anonymous. Source: The Grio RELATED: Bullying Is Not Hot! Mac Miller Makes His Picks For Next Big Pittsburgh MCs

Miller took MTV News back to the ‘Burgh and introduced us to some of his city’s hottest up-and-coming talent. By Rob Markman Mac Miller Photo: MTV News Yes, the world knows Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller , but Pittsburgh has a wealth of hip-hop talent. With the Steel City’s two breakout stars already accounted for, MTV News took a trip to the ‘Burgh to see who’s got next. “A lot of people are talented. There are just a million talented people out there,” Miller told MTV News when he took us on a tour through his hometown in December. Acts like Boaz, Chevy Woods, B White and Mayo of the 58’s, Jabari X and Varsity Squad have been repping Pittsburgh locally for some time now, and while Mac supports all the city’s homegrown talent, if he had to pick one act to break out nationwide, it would be the Come Up, a.k.a. the duo of Vinny Radio and Franchise. “I brought them on tour and I plan on bringing them out on tour, so if it’s up to me, they’re gonna be the next people that come out the ‘Burgh,” Miller said. “But there’s definitely a lot more people who could; it’s not just Vinny and Fran.” Mac Miller introduces Pittsburgh’s hottest producers. The Come Up exist as a part of a larger hip-hop collective called the 58’s, along with rappers B White and Mayo. That union exemplifies the type of unity that exists in Pittsburgh’s rap scene. “It’s a small city … so pretty much we’ve all been familiar with each other for a long time,” Franchise said. “Everybody in this city who’s pretty much doing it legit, we’ve all been trying to get it and put the city on.” Taylor Gang’s Chevy Woods echoed a similar sentiment. “Everybody’s hardworking, and it’s not like a big music scene out there, so when you got somethin’, you just go with it,” he said. “Everybody sees the light that shines on [Wiz Khalifa] and Mac [Miller] and now it’s trickling down to everybody else.” Wiz Khalifa motivates Pittsburgh’s up-and-coming artists. There is a pretty diverse group of rap characters that come out of Pittsburgh. Wiz is a hitmaker who dedicates a lot of his catalog to partying and getting high, while Mac embodies a youthful spirit. Boaz is street, and female MC Kellee Maize spits sociopolitical bars. “To be honest, I do think Boaz is right there on the cusp. I think I’m maybe close to the cusp too,” Kellee said, laughing. “I just bring that underground feel,” Boaz said, describing his deeply-rooted street sound. “I embrace the culture of that poverty line that I’m speaking about.” For years, Time Bomb has been a epicenter for Pittsburgh hip-hop. More than just a clothing store, Time Bomb has become a place for local ‘Burgh MCs to congregate and sling their mixtapes to hungry fans. The shop’s owner, Brick, has seen many young artists walk through his doors, including Miller and Khalifa. When it comes to the future of Pittsburgh hip-hop, Brick is a wide-eyed optimist. “I think Mac and Wiz opened the door, but there’s gonna be an army of producers, an army of rappers, and they’re gonna be all different. People know: Pittsburgh, it is what it is, it’s a hardworking town,” he said. “I can name 100 people, because I want everyone to make it from here, you understand? This is Pittsburgh.” Who do you believe will be the next rap act to emerge from Pittsburgh? Tell us in the comments! Take a look back at MTV News’ Back to the ‘Burgh with Mac Miller and see how we spotlighted the city’s vibrant hip-hop scene. Super Bowl Predictions From Cobra Starship

Since they’re playing a pre-Super Bowl bash, we had the Cobras give us their picks for the big game. For better or worse. By James Montgomery MTV News’ James Montgomery and Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta and Ryland Blackinton Photo: MTV News On the surface — or, really, any level — Cobra Starship don’t appear to be “sports guys” (and girl). Which is why it’s sort of strange to hear them discuss this Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVI … and even stranger to hear them say they’re heading to the host city (Indianapolis) to play the big game. “Yeah, I will be on the New England Patriots. It’s super-scary; I lost a bet and now I have to put on the gear and I’m going to get the sh– kicked out of me, and it’s not cool,” guitarist Ryland Blackinton deadpanned. “No, we’re playing a Super Bowl party the night before with LMFAO, Lupe Fiasco and Gym Class Heroes. It’s a real-deal party in the least partyful place in the world, next to Kenosha, Wisconsin.” No offense to the good people of Kenosha, of course. But, yes, Cobra Starship will join Lupe, LMFAO and Gym Class at Saturday night’s extravaganza. And since they’re officially taking part in the Super Bowl festivities, we had to ask them about their (apparent) love of football, which, not surprisingly, seems to be largely nonexistent. “We love the uniforms,” Blackinton explained. “And I like all the masculinity and high-production gloss of the Super Bowl stuff; the logos crashing together and lightning striking a helmet, and the one with the robot football players … it’s like that sh—y Hugh Jackman movie, ‘Real Steel.’ ” And, much like we did a few years back with die-hard Steelers fan/transplanted Arizona resident Bret Michaels in the lead-up to Super Bowl XLIII (which pitted the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Arizona Cardinals), we asked Blackinton and Cobra frontman Gabe Saporta to give us their predictions for Sunday’s game. And based on what they told us, let’s just say they’re probably not going to be as prescient as Michaels ended up being. “The Giants are going to win, 72-60,” Saporta said. “Seventy-two is a real good number.” “The Patriots will win 34-28,” Blackinton added. “But maybe that’s in overtime or whatever.” Leave your predictions for Super Bowl XLVI in the comments below!
