N early six decades after breaking racial barriers in the NHL, an athlete is finally receiving the recognition that he has long deserved. 83-year-old Willie O’Ree —the first Black player in the National Hockey League—will be inducted into the league’s Hall of Fame on Monday, the New York Times reported. O’Ree, 83, the league’s first black player, is being honored not just for the historical significance of his career, but also for his decades of working with young players all over North America https://t.co/mXvQ8w2rpc — NYT Sports (@NYTSports) November 10, 2018 O’Ree entered the league in 1958 and played for the Boston Bruins, the news outlet writes. During his career—which lasted for 24 seasons—he encountered the unthinkable all due to the color of his skin. There was an incident where during a brawl an opponent knocked his teeth out with a hockey stick and there was another time where unruly fans attempted to pull him into the stands and attack him. “I heard that N-word so many times that I just let it go in one ear and out the other,” O’Ree told the news outlet. “I never fought because of racial slurs or remarks. I fought because guys speared me, butt-ended me, crosschecked me and things of that nature. Otherwise I would have spent every game in the penalty box.” Despite those obstacles, O’Ree persevered because he knew that stepping on the ice to compete was something bigger than him and he was breaking barriers for Black athletes who would follow in his footsteps. After retiring from hockey, O’Ree spearheaded several youth programs in an effort to diversify the sport. O’Ree’s legacy has inspired the generations of Black athletes who have come behind him. “Willie O’Ree’s story must not be forgotten,” Karl Subban , a father of three Black NHL draft picks, told Sports Illustrated . “He has made it possible for my boys to have the NHL dream and to believe they could achieve it. He changed hockey which is now for everyone. Hockey needed him and so does the Hockey Hall of Fame. The time is right!” There remains a lack of diversity in the NHL. According to the New York Times , 97 percent of the league is white. Press secretary Sarah Sanders said, “These terrorizing acts are despicable, and anyone responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. The United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies are investigating and will take all appropriate actions to protect anyone threatened by these cowards.” However, the president, who has no ability to calm the country, whined that he is being attacked. His tweet read, “Funny how lowly rated CNN, and others, can criticize me at will, even blaming me for the current spate of Bombs and ridiculously comparing this to September 11th and the Oklahoma City bombing, yet when I criticize them they go wild and scream, ‘it’s just not Presidential!” Funny how lowly rated CNN, and others, can criticize me at will, even blaming me for the current spate of Bombs and ridiculously comparing this to September 11th and the Oklahoma City bombing, yet when I criticize them they go wild and scream, “it’s just not Presidential!” — Donald J. Topics of inequality and police brutality have been forced to the forefront of American dialogue. Because this is the digital age, everything is online and we’re seeing horrible acts of racism and violence every day. Years ago you would have heard of some of these stories, but you wouldn’t have seen the murder of innocent people who look like you before your own eyes. Now take that trauma that you experience from seeing images of police brutality and racism on repeat, and imagine dealing with that on top of the stress of being a teenager. The football team at an all Black private school in Prince George’s County, Md., has decided to follow in Colin Kaepernick’s footsteps and take a knee during the National Anthem. The team first broached the idea of taking a knee with new coach, Cornell Wade, in late August, according to NBC News . The first game of the season was a few days away. Josiah Gill, 17, spoke for the team when he said they understood. “We’re taking a knee because of inequality as a whole,” Gill said, according to the NBC News article. “We’re aware of what’s going on in this country as young black males.” “A lot of people love football,” Gill added. “You have them coming from places to see you do something, and why not take a knee, why not do this to show we see what’s going on in the world?” Like many American teenagers, Gill and his teammates have followed the debate over NFL players who kneel to call attention to racial injustice and police bias. As the league and team owners work to figure out how to penalize those players who protest, a handful of high schools around the country have confronted the issue as well. In some places where student-athletes knelt they were punished, or even kicked off of the team. Outside of Houston, two Black football players at a private Christian school who protested during the national anthem were kicked off the team by their white coach. When members of a mostly Black high school football team in Louisiana knelt before a game against a mostly white school, they were met with jeers and racial slurs. And in New Jersey , two referees at a high school football game walked off the field after players knelt, later saying they didn’t like “anyone disrespecting our country, our flag, the armed forces,” according to NBC News . Some schools have banned the protest, but at Capital Christian Academy, Gill and other players are still kneeling. A s the nation mourned the passing of Microsoft co-founder and NFL and NBA franchise owner Paul Allen , family, friends and fans were sharing memories of his life, including his relationships with African-Americans. Allen, who died from complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Seattle on Monday afternoon, was 65 years old. Known for his work to innovate technology and with Vulcan, his network of philanthropic organizations and efforts, the billionaire philanthropist was also the owner of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and NBA’s Portland Trailblazers. Because of the two sports teams, Allen had many interactions with African-American athletes, including Colin Kaepernick , whose case accusing NFL ownership of colluding to keep him from playing has moved forward in court. The Seahawks then reached back out to Kaepernick to schedule another visit this past April at a time when many people of color felt the quarterback was being blackballed from the league. Allen gave $100,000 to the GOP last month in order to help Republicans keep their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. His donation drew criticism from activists who pointed out that the NFL doesn’t support Black communities enough even though African-American players make up the league’s majority. Activists had asked the league to start depositing funds into Black-owned banks, as well. Aside from the sports world, Microsoft co-founder had also been credited with making contributions to some organizations supporting people of color, including Adelante Mujeres , a grassroots organization that works to educate and empower Latina women and their families. He had also pledged to donate $100 million to fight Ebola , a disease that has ravaged the Black populations in West Africa. Allen also was applauded for investing in cultural institutions in Seattle and revitalizing parts of the city . However, some social media users emphasized that the major developments had opened the door for gentrifying Seattle, a practice known as a factor in driving African Americans out of certain neighborhoods. Allen never married and had no children. Lil Wayne proves once again he doesn’t miss a thing when it comes to sports. Eli Manning inadvertently snubbed him and got put on notice by the famed rapper. Last week during a Q&A with ESPN Weezy sat alongside Giants starter Odell Beckham Jr.. While the interview was centered around his team’s chances at a playoff run the wide out confessed he was not happy with their offensive strategy. “I don’t feel like I’m given the opportunity to be the very best that I can be. I feel like I could score every quarter, if given the opportunity. I know those numbers could be double or triple that they are right now. I want to win. I want to be great. I feel like I can score every quarter, if I’m given the chance. That’s not the case” he explained. Naturally, the criticism got back to the organization and their impact players were questioned immediately. When asked about QB Eli Manning used TuneChi as scapegoat of sorts to avoid the baited inquiry. “I don’t watch Lil Wayne much, so I missed a lot of him” he responded. Well that didn’t too well with Wayne. In a series of Instagram posts, the Louisiana native addressed Manning and made it clear he was disappointed in the lack of respect Eli put on his name. “Every time I’m doing an interview about you and somebody is about to … even when I’m in the crib and amongst the homies, every time someone says something bad about you, I be the first one to [defend you].” Weezy went on to express his frustration considering Manning is also from New Orleans. “And here you’re talking about you don’t watch Lil Wayne much. That’s fine. I’m cool with you. I don’t care what you watch, what you listen to, nothing like that. But come on, man, the hometown love — why you gotta do me like that, man? I didn’t say anything bad about you, man. So I’m not going to say anything bad about you now.” It seems the rant got back to the Giants as they played three Lil Wayne songs at their practice on Tuesday. Someone has a sense of humor.
