Viola Davis Oscars Speech: The Best Ever?

Viola Davis was expected to win Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 Academy Awards for her role in Fences. And Viola Davis was expected to give an especially poignant speech after her win for Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 Academy Awards for her role in Fences. Both these things happened on Sunday night. But that didn't make them any less dramatic or impactful. “People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?” said Davis early on in her acceptance speech, adding: “And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed.” She went on, explaining her rationale and showering praise on her industry in general. “I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.” The How to Get Away with Murder star continued to gush over the playwright behind Fences, which she described as, “a movie that is about people, and words, and life, and forgiveness, and grace.” Now the only black woman to have won an Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting, Davis referred to co-star and director Denzel Washington as her “captain” and told the actor: “Thank you for putting two entities in the driving seat: August and God. And they served you well.” Twitter quickly blew up after the speech was over with jokes over how the speech itself ought to be nominated for an Oscar or Emmy. Watch the entire thing below:

Rob Kardashian: Is His Diabetes Out of Control?!

These past few months haven’t been too kind to Rob Kardashian. Well, these past few months, these past few years, whatever. He did become a father to the unspeakably adorable Dream , which is undoubtedly a high point in his life — despite the shambles his life seems to be in right now, he still seems so very, very happy about being a dad. But everything else? Yeah, it’s kind of a mess. His relationship with Blac Chyna seems to be over at this point, perhaps for good. They’ve been broken up for a few weeks now at least, and unlike their previous splits, there’s been no back and forths between them, no yelling about “texting bitches,” no social media rampages. We’d heard that they’re trying to be mature about it all, and against all odds, it seems like they’re succeeding. So since Rob’s love life has apparently gone all to hell, it’s a good thing he has his health, right? Not so fast … Rob has been struggling with diabetes for over a year now. He was first hospitalized for it in December of 2015, and it seemed pretty serious at the time. He lost a lot of weight when he began dating Blac Chyna, enough that he actually reversed the diabetes, but that didn’t last for long. He began gaining weight again, and when he and Chyna started having serious relationship issues, he got back in self-destruct mode, eating his feelings and ignoring his health. Last December, he was hospitalized once again when his diabetes got out of control. We’ve heard that Rob is considering gastric bypass surgery to get a handle on his weight, but as of now, he hasn’t taken that leap yet. But he has been desperately asking his Instagram followers for advice on managing his diabetes. Last night, Rob posted (and deleted) this: Apparently some people believe that if you drink some good old-fashioned okra water, you can cure your diabetes. And hey, maybe you can. This is a wild world we’re living in. In his caption, Rob wrote “Has anyone tried this?? I need to know if it really works.” And there’s just something a little sad about that, right? Something a little desperate. Hopefully he’s not having any serious complications that we don’t know about, something that would make him feel like he needs to try anything and everything that could possibly help him. Hang in there, Rob. View Slideshow: Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian: A Turbulent Timeline of Doom

Nicki Minaj: Subject of a VICIOUS New Track from Remy Ma!

Nicki Minaj and fellow rapper Remy Ma are not friends. Not even a little bit. Not even at all. We know this because yesterday, two new songs featuring verses from Nicki were released — “Swalla” by Jason Derulo and “Make Love” with Gucci Mane — and in both songs, Nicki slammed Remy Ma. The disses were pretty basic, things like “every line sucks” and something about an album flopping. But then Remy Ma turned the tables and released a seven-minute track entirely about Nicki. And it is, as the kids would say, savage . The song is called “ShETHER,” a twist on Nas' old takedown track about Jay Z. And it is a thing of beauty. At one point, Remy Ma raps about Nicki's relationship with Meek Mill : “I saw Meek at All-Star, he told me your ass drop. He couldn't f-ck you for three months because your ass dropped. Now I don't think you understand how bad her ass got. The implants that you had put in her ass popped.” She also touched on more of Nicki's relationships: “Been through mad fools, you disloyal hoochie. Now all of a sudden you back with Drake and Tunechi? After you said you sucked his d-ck, you back with Gucci. Who next, Puff, Deb or 50? You a A-list groupie.” She even touched on the topic of Nicki's brother and those rape charges . It's bad. Hear Remy Ma air out all her grievances in the track below:

Gabrielle Union’s Got A New Haircut — Do You Love It?

There are two things that are undeniably true about Gabrielle Union: She doesn’t look her age and her hair is always on point. Long, medium length, short — shorter, ol’ girl has the hair game on lock and she proved as much again last night.  The “Being Mary Jane” star stepped on the red carpet for the annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood gala in Los Angeles with a cut that was shorter than usual, and apparently totally spontaneous. “We just did this like a few minutes ago,” the 44-year-old told  People magazine  Thursday. “We were like, stop, ‘Let’s go shorter. Let’s go shorter.’ Larry Sims just took a hatchet to it and just hacked it off.” [ madamenoire ] Viola Davis Talks Self Care, Aging & What She Wants To Teach Her Daughter It’s award season and you already know Viola Davis, being one of the greatest actors of our time, is out here. In preparation for this weekend’s Oscar’s Refinery 29 asked the actress a couple of questions not only about her beauty regimen but also about self-care. Check out a couple of wise words from one of our favorites. Self care “You know what? Especially with women, we are usually the caretakers of everyone except for ourselves. If I don’t take care of myself and I’m taking care of my daughter or my husband or whatever — I’m running on fumes. I have nothing left to give. Nothing. But when I take the time to take care of myself, to go to the doctor, go to a spa, get a deep tissue massage, get adjusted by a chiropractor… I feel like I can face life with a renewed vigor and renewed passion.” [ madamenoire ] Beyonce Offers Support To LGBTQ Students After Trump Walksback Protections Beyonce offered some support to the LGBTQ community via social media as the Trump Administration walked back on protecting them from discrimination. The Trump Administration announced earlier this week that they are rescinding provisions that protected transgender students from discrimination in public schools. With the LGBTQ community now worrying about their civil liberties being protected, Beyonce has stepped forward to offer her support. In a Facebook post, Bey posted a link to the “100 Days Of Kindness” campaign which encourages people to post positive messages supporting transgender youth. Christina El Moussa Throws Subtle Shade at Tarek, Makes Heartbreaking Confession

According to a new report, Christina El Moussa is no longer running her tongue over the body of Gary Anderson. She and the man she dated for a few months after splitting from husband Tarek have ended their relationship . With her tongue therefore free to do other things, Christina has decided to not bite it. In other, less confusing terms, what we’re saying is this: El Moussa hopped on Instagram this afternoon and hurled some shade in the direction of Tarek, her estranged ex and ongoing Flip or Flop co-star. Both of these HGTV employees have been in the news a lot over the past few days, with Tarek and Christina actually giving duel interviews on Today and Good Morning America, respectively, on Tuesday. In his pre-taped sit-down, delved into detail regarding the strange incident last May in which he stormed out of his house with a gun , following an argument with Christina. He said he was never suicidal and simply wanted to protect himself against wild animals in the woods while he blew off some steam via a hike. Tarek also admitted that it’s been a little awkward filming Flip or Flop with Christina, but that both sides agree on what’s most important these days: “The number one goal is to co-parent our children. We have to make sure we remain friendly.” Tarek El Moussa Explains Gun Incident: What Was He Thinking?!? As you can see in the above clip, Tarek didn’t say anything too controversial in his Today Show interview. Nevertheless, Christina definitely appears to have taken a shot at her soon-to-be-ex-husband in her latest Instagram post. It’s a photo of a very serious looking tiger, staring into camera, with the following words plastered over his face: Be selective in your battles. Sometimes peace is better than being right. Our translation here? I’m right. Tarek is wrong. But I’m gonna take the high road, place my children’s well-being above all else and keep the peace. Even though, remember… I’m right! What has Tarek said or done that prompted Christina’s shade? We can’t say for certain at the moment. Elsewhere, Christina opened up to People Magazine for its latest issue, admitting that communication between her and Tarek fell apart to such a degree that they didn’t even drive to the Flip or Flop set together toward the end of their marriage. She doesn’t sound bitter at this point, however. “It is what it is and we are going through a divorce and eventually we will be dating other people,” El Moussa tells the publication , adding: “I’m happy for him and whatever steps he takes in his life and I just hope he’s happy.” In a newly-released excerpt from the cover story, Christina also tells a sad tale about the separation and its aftermath. When she first moved out, Christina said she kept the reasons why pretty “vague” in talking to daughter Taylor, which worked for a little bit because the family often renovated their house and would live elsewhere temporarily. Later, however, once the couple decided that reconciliation was not on the table, Christina says: “Taylor asked if we could get back together. We had to explain that sometimes couples get divorced but that she and Brayden are our No. 1 priority. We’ll always be a family.” That’s a sad thing to hear, but a few months after Tarek and Christina called it quits, it sounds as if six-year Taylor and 17-month old Brayden are doing well. “Our kids are amazing … our kids are transitioning well,” Christina said Tuesday on Good Morning America. “Tarek and I are friends and we have a lot of support from our family. The kids are doing great.” View Slideshow: Christina El Moussa Photos: Flip or Flop Hotness!

Azealia Banks to Lana Del Rey: Leave Donald Trump Alone!

At this point, it’s hard to be surprised by anything that Azealia Banks says, does, or tweets. Azealia feuds with just about everyone who crosses her path, especially those who dare to criticize President Donald Trump. Yes, for reasons that aren’t particularly clear (even/especially to her) Azealia is a yuuuuuge Trump supporter. In fact, she’s so hardcore in her beliefs that Banks went off on Rihanna last week for speaking out against Trump’s controversial Muslim ban. “This is all stupid and wrong. Is she even American??? Can she even vote???” Banks tweeted, and if she’d only squeezed in the words “cuck” and “snowflake,” she would’ve perfectly captured the tone of the typical irate Trump troll. Azealia is black, a woman, an artist, a young person, a supporter of the LGBTQ community, and (we’re just guessing, considering the way her career has kind of bottomed out) a non-millionaire – which makes her a member of half a dozen groups that aren’t particularly well-represented aboard the Trump Train. Of course, she also sacrifices chickens in her apartment as part of her witchcraft ceremonies, so pointing out inconsistencies in Azealia’s political ideology is a bit like calling Charles Manson crazy for pouring the milk in his bowl before the cereal. Azealia Banks Sacrifices Chickens, Posts the Bloody Aftermath on Snapchat Anyway, like her bestie Milo Yiannopolos, Banks was suspended from Twitter for doing what she does best (read: trolling the entire planet), but she’s back now, and it seems she’s already making up for lost time. This story comes to us courtesy of the Lana Del Rey fan page  Planet Del Rey, which claims that Azealia has turned on her former friend Lana for jokingly (we think) threatening to take Trump down with witchcraft. Lana recently posted a tweet asking fans to find “ingredients” online and use them “at the stroke of midnight.” We’re old and easily confused by both hip young Millennials  and social media, so we would’ve thought that Lana was organizing a good old-fashioned Meth cook-off. But the singer’s fans insist it was some sort of sly reference to bewitching the Donald, and apparently Azealia didn’t care for it one bit: “Leave that motherf-cker alone,” Banks allegedly tweeted. “You witches are only going to make Trump stronger. *rolls eye* hashtag. White girl magic.”  She added: “No shade I will go toe to toe with these white witches because Hillary Clinton losing was a major loss for white feminism.” She later confirmed that she was referring to Lana in response to a fan’s query. The tweets appear to have been deleted, but as you can see, Planet Del Rey came equipped with receipts. We’d say this all seems a tad ludicrous, but this is Azealia Banks we’re talking about. The woman once started a feud with the entire country of Australia , seemingly just for her own amusement. Ya know, now that we think about it, we’re starting to understand her love of Trump …

Exclusive: “Get Out” Director Jordan Peele Talks “Post-Racial America,” Challenging Hollywood & Comedy Gem Lil Rey Howery

Jordan Peele Dishes On “Get Out” Jordan Peele’s hilariously terrifying (and already critically-acclaimed) Horror-Comedy Get Out is a fearless blend of heart-stopping thrills and satire splashed with the Black experience in not-very-post-racial America that will certainly push audiences to an uncomfortable yet strangely funny place never before explored in mainstream cinema. We caught up with the Key & Peele funnyman-turned-movie star-turned-writer/director at Morehouse College where he opened up about making the soon-to-be movie of the moment. “I think people who have criticized this film tend to be the people who haven’t seen it yet. I think the reason it’s resonating is because ‘where has this movie been, then?’ no one has given any concept like this a chance in a long time. We get tired of the same ‘ole thing. The real thing that’s poppin’ off about this movie is that it feels like ‘this is a missing piece’ we missed this. This movie should’ve been made 40 years ago, in some ways. This is the plot of Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner? which, by the way, you could do today and not change a word. So, I think it’s a fair opinion but I think it’s more because we missed this piece of the puzzle” Get Out  is completely ridiculous in the best way possible with a soul-burning message that will hopefully reignite productive conversations about race in America. “First of all, it acknowledges issues that have gone unacknowledged so I think, in that, I believe we need to be discussing these things. I believe we need to have these conversations. I also believe the way we talk about race is tiring to a lot of people and often falls apart because of our egos and people getting defensive… some people so don’t want to be considered racist that they can’t look within themselves. So, I think content like this that is entertainment, first and foremost, I think that’s the end. That’s the Trojan Horse. We can come in, we can watch, we can have a good time, scream, yell, laugh, get scared, and then afterward you have to acknowledge what happened to you when you were in there. At that point, I feel like it should–I hope it promotes constructive conversation where we were all on the same page watching that movie so we can all agree that that movie rings true. Now, if you date a white guy you can be like ‘look, honey, I’m not trying to go to your house -laughs- I think that’s in some small way… hopefully, that is beginning to heal the conversation because it’s putting another touchstone where you can refer to it like ‘remember that dude in Get Out ? That’s what you’re doing right now’ you know, we can have that conversation” Movies directed by actors-turned-directors are a mixed bag of meh but there’s no doubting Jordan Peele’s eye for visceral visuals in his directorial debut. “I learned a lot from the director of Key & Peele and Keanu –Peter Atencio. I learned directing is very hard–hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. And it was kind of a different process writing the movie as it was directing and bringing all that together. Ultimately, I learned that this idea that I thought would never get made–the freedom I was able to give myself by saying ‘I’m not even gonna try and be ambitious with this. This is for me and me only.’ That gave me a freedom that allowed me to get to something that has resonated enough to get this current Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% so now I feel like ‘oh my God. What I like is universal even if it’s the most left field sort of idea on paper from Hollywood… make a Horror movie about race? No, that’s not happening. But if you’re true to yourself people feel that when you’re watching. People know ‘he’s doing him right now’ and I recognize it. Our souls are the same in a way and if you do justice to your emotion and your soul that’s where the commonality in all of us comes up. And I love seeing this in a Black crowd but I love seeing it in a mixed crowd too because everyone’s on the same ride. It transcends our differences, that’s a surprise to me” Peele’s impressive direction shines alongside perfect casting of unforgettable characters. “Every character was its own adventure figuring out. Now with Keith, Atlanta hadn’t come out when we made this movie. I casted LaKeith from his work on  Short Term 12 , Selma , Compton , you know, and he has this quality where it’s like ‘I don’t know who that is but I like that guy. I like that guy.’ And he is so innately cool that I thought if I can get him in here and have the flip be the least cool–the least soulful brother that we’ve ever seen that it would be sorta jarring. But every character had their own requirements for me to tell the story. With “Rose,” with Allison Williams, I needed that relationship to be something that we want to work which is very difficult, especially with interracial relationships where it’s like there’s people on both sides who don’t want to see that work. “Making that relationship work, I had to have somebody that fit this mold of ‘you know what, yes, she’s undeniably caucasian but she’s also waking up and she’s funny and she’s intelligent and she’s kinda a badass with that cop -laughs- every character had their own thing I was looking for” Comedy’s best-kept secret Lil Rel Howery shines at the heart of Get Out and will certainly be everyone’s favorite new comedian by Monday. “He feels very familial to a lot of people. He’s got that feeling where it’s like ‘I know this dude. This is my cousin, this is my brother, this is my best friend. So, that was very important. He’s an amazing comedian. He’s a great improviser, many times I could be like ‘Rell you gotta say this line in the way that makes the most sense to you. Gimme several reads’ and he would find these new hilarious ways to do it. Most importantly, when it all came down to it, that’s a situation where that’s the guy I was picturing when I was writing it. And when I realized, I was like ‘Oh, Lil Rel! That. Is. Rod. Like, you just can’t take that away so it was all three of those things but, damn, what perfect casting, man. I’m so happy I got him” Get Out hits theaters TODAY and it’s an absolute MUST SEE. No, seriously. Universal
