Nate Parker Admits He Was Selfish When Defending Past Rape Accusations And Didn’t Consider Victim, “When I Learned About Her Passing It Shook Me”

Nate Parker Apologizes For Lack Of Gender Perspective, Addresses Male Privilege Nate Parker has been getting dragged relentlessly over the past few weeks , ever since details of past sexual assault allegations hit the news . Faced with cancelled screenings and potential backlash against his latest film project, Parker is admitting his initial response to his past being brought up was not the best: According to Ebony reports : After answering a question about why he chose to make “yet another slave film,” Parker addressed the controversy head-on. “I think it’s very difficult to talk about injustice and not deal with what’s happening right now,” the 36-year-old actor and director told the audience. “When I was first met with the news that this part of my past had come up, my knee-jerk reaction was selfish. I wasn’t thinking about even the potential hurt of others; I was thinking about myself.” For the next 12 minutes, Parker discussed learning about things like toxic masculinity and male privilege, while explaining that he isn’t upset the rape allegation has been resurrected. “This is happening for a very specific reason,” Parker explained, referencing God throughout the conversation. “To be honest, my privilege as a male, I never thought about it. I’m walking around daring someone to say something or do something that I define is racist or holding us back, but never really thinking about male culture and the destructive effect it’s having on our community.” Definitely a good start right? There’s more though. Parker spoke at length with the Ebony reporter, discussing how little his 19-year-old self understood about consent and honestly a lot of what he has to say is STILL problematic. EBONY.com: You started out tonight addressing the controversy, and you talked a lot about male culture and toxic masculinity. So I want to kind of compare. What, at 19, did you know about consent? Nate Parker: To be honest, not very much. It wasn’t a conversation people were having. When I think about 1999, I think about being a 19-year-old kid, and I think about my attitude and behavior just toward women with respect objectifying them. I never thought about consent as a definition, especially as I do now. I think the definitions of so many things have changed. EBONY.com: So how does it differ for you? Nate Parker: You mean like where I am right now? EBONY.com: Yeah, as 36-year-old Nate. Nate Parker: Put it this way, when you’re 19, a threesome is normal. It’s fun. When you’re 19, getting a girl to say yes, or being a dog, or being a player, cheating. Consent is all about–for me, back then–if you can get a girl to say yes, you win. Wayment. Did he actually say “a threesome is normal”? As in a threesome with two guys and a girl? That’s normal? Is that something that most people would agree with? Cuz we’re not seeing it. The good news is Parker does OWN up to the selfishness of his initial response: EBONY.com: You mentioned that your initial comments about the resurrection of this incident were self-centered, and from an emotional place on your behalf. So do you understand why people are struggling with… Nate Parker: Absolutely! I understand now, but I was speaking from a standpoint of ignorance. EBONY.com: Two weeks ago, you mean? Nate Parker: Yeah. Well, when you don’t know, you don’t know. It’s like, if I don’t know how to swim and two weeks later I know how to swim, I know how to swim. Honestly, when I started reading them comments I had to call some people and say, What did I do wrong? What did I say wrong? I called a couple of sisters that know that are in the space that talk about the feminist movement and toxic masculinity, and just asked questions. What did I do wrong? Because I was thinking about myself. And what I realized is that I never took a moment to think about the woman. I didn’t think about her then, and I didn’t think about her when I was saying those statements, which was wrong and insensitive. I just really wanted to know more about what I was talking about. People were saying, why isn’t he speaking soon? Cuz I still didn’t know nothing. I don’t want…this ain’t the hype for me. Much better. Now we’re getting somewhere. More on Parker’s awakening when you continue. WENN

Drake Keeps Close To Rihanna At VMA Afterparty Anyone who was watching the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night was witness to Drake continuing his spree of being “extra” in sharing his affection for rumored boo thang Rihanna… Gotta love that speech he gave while presenting her with the Video Vanguard award: “She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old. She’s one of my best friends in the world. All my adult life I’ve looked up to her, even though she’s younger than me. She’s a living, breathing legend in our industry.” As much as folks tried to say she curved him, the pair continued to kick it long into the early hours of the morning after the VMA’s were over! After the show Drake posted ANOTHER sweet message: And celebrate they did! According to E! News reports : For the next few hours, Rihanna and Drake slipped away before they reappeared at Up&Down nightclub around 3:15 a.m. Hailey Baldwin, Taylor Hill, Jaden Smith, Jasmine Tookes and more were already partying by the time the couple arrived with friends and a few bodyguards. “They were holding hands when they walked in,” a source tells E! Mariah Carey’s HIV-Positive Sister: Arrested for Prostitution

Troubling news this weekend for Mariah Carey and her family: The singer’s estranged sister, Alison Carey, was arrested on a prostitution charge in Saugerties, New York on Friday, August 26. Alison Carey is also HIV-positive. According to The Daily Freeman, a local newspaper, Carey approached an undercover police officer outside an unnamed hotel and offered sex in exchange for money. She had allegedly been strolling that area and making this same type of offer for about a week. Carey was also advertising her services through online advertisements, with authorities urging anyone who may have had a sexual encounter with Alison to contact their doctors. Due to her HIV-positive status and everything. During the arrest, Alison reportedly identified herself as Mariah’s sister; later, Saugerties police chief Joseph Sinagra confirmed the claim via an Internet search. Because she used the World Wide Web, some of this evidence is available to the general public. To wit: on one of Alison’s online ads – which was posted online at 6:18 p.m. on Friday night – she actually quoted her famous sister’s 1995 hit “Fantasy.” The ad reads thusly: Im a pretty lady looking for guys who are looking to have some fun and get into a world of pleasure that other woman just cant provide two you, woman with the ability to make the earth move for you and to get you to see stars. Oh yea with me its, ‘ITS SUCH A SWEET, SWEET FANTASY BABY, WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES I COME AND TAKE YOU ON AND ON. Police did not specify which website Alison used for this ad or to list her services. They did say, however, that they received a tip about the ads, which were also dated July 31 and August 15. View Slideshow: Mariah Carey on Watch What Happens Live: What Did We Learn? Earlier this year, Alison Carey made a video in which she asked Mariah Carey for help. In the piece of footage, which was released in March by The Daily Mail, the troubled 55-year old said: “Mariah, I love you. I desperately need your help. Please don’t abandon me like this.” The sisters (who share an older brother, Morgan Carey) have been estranged for over a year, sources say. Alison Carey was arraigned in Saugerties Town Court and sent to Ulster County Jail on Friday. She is due in court on Tuesday, August 30.

The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 7 Episode 7 Recap: Spa-Cation Time!

On  The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 7 Episode 7 , the ladies enjoyed a spa day after Teresa Giudice ditched her ankle monitor. Sentences you never thought you’d write with a straight face … Watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 7 Episode 7 Online Ankle monitor jokes aside, The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 7 Episode 7 was significant for the end of something more significant: Teresa Giudice and Jacqueline Laurita finally quashed their beef. To the surprise of no one the luxurious spa weekend didn’t start off smoothly, as you’ll see watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey online . Tensions rose after Jacqueline failed to properly greet Teresa. “She walks in trying to ignore me and it’s like, ‘Why’d you even come?'” Teresa sighed; Jacque offered to shake her hand instead of hug. Teresa did not appreciate that alleged slight either. Awkward conversations followed, especially when it came to finances (an understandably touchy subject for Teresa, the paroled convict). Incredibly, though, this was discussed peacefully. Jacqueline opened up about her own financial troubles; Melissa revealed how she too fell on hard times that regular people know all about. Teresa talked about how people always ask her why she stayed with her husband, Joe, after everything he did and they’d been through. Of course, she didn’t take personal responsibility. “What do you mean how do I stay with him? I love my husband,” Teresa said, and whatever you think of her, you have to admire the loyalty.  View Slideshow: 23 Teresa Giudice GIFs That Should Worry Her Fellow Inmates (and Everyone Else) The next day, Jacqueline grew sad when the other ladies were discussing “proud mommy moments,” ones she did not share with Nicholas. “The proud mommy moments,” Laurita said of her autistic child, “I have those too, but they’re different. My child’s childhood is different.” “Nicholas works so hard every day for doing the things that other kids do so easily. At this age he doesn’t notice the differences.” “But one day, he might.” “If you believe it, he will,” none other than Teresa offered when Jacqueline expressed her fears, concerns and hopes for Nicholas’ future. “I can’t even understand what Jacqueline is going through,” she told the cameras later. “It breaks my heart into, like, a zillion pieces.” “If you ever have a bad day, always feel free to call me,” Teresa said, and most incredibly of all, it seemed like she actually meant that. To the cameras, Jacqueline admitted that “it’s nice to have her ask about me and really listen,” and that perhaps this was a real breakthrough. Teresa admitted that she wasn’t there for Jacqueline and Nicholas as much as she would have liked, thanks in large part to her legal woes. She didn’t say point blank that she regretted this, but it was implied. As much as it can be considering we’re talking about Teresa here. In the end, everyone came out of this episode better than when it began, and they took a yoga class, which Giudice summed up thusly: “Namaste, bitches.”  ‘Nuff said.

Colin Kaepernick Sits During National Anthem, Defends Decision Like THIS

Colin Kaepernick is not a very good NFL quarterback any longer. He was benched last year by the San Francisco 49ers in favor or Blaine Gabbert. That says it all. This statement really isn’t up for debate. But the 28-year old has stirred a significant national debate after he refused on Friday night to stand during the pre-game playing of the Star-Spangled Banner. The controversial incident took place prior to a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. Here is a look at Kaepernick on the bench while his country was being honored He’s sitting underneath that giant arrow: What prompted Kaepernick to make this decision? He says it was a matter of conscience, of doing something that would call attention to the plight of African-Americans. “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told NFL Media. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” Kaepernick did not get into specifics, but he is most likely talking about the rash of African-American deaths at the hands of police officers over the past several months. It’s a topic many professional athletes are starting to raise, with Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James opening this year’s ESPY Awards by making a plea for racial harmony. For many, these deadly and dangerous issues culminated in June and July with the deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police officers. Both black men lost their lives in confrontations with the police, seemingly in needless, irresponsible fashion. These deaths were followed by the killing of five cops in Dallas by a deranged sniper. The 49ers, meanwhile, issued a statement about Kaepernick’s stance. It reads as follows: “The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. “In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem.” And Niners Head Coach Chip Kelly told reporters on Saturday that Kaepernick’s choice not to stand during the national anthem is “his right as a citizen” and said “it’s not my right to tell him not to do something.” The move has created quite a bit of controversy. Many appreciate Kaepernick calling attention to a pressing national topic such as this. Aren’t we always asking athletes to use their platforms for something bigger than sports? Didn’t we just celebrate the life of Muhammed Ali? Possibly the most revered and respected athlete of all-time, Ali refused to be drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He basically spat on his country at the time for its racist tendencies and misguided international policies. Critics of Kaepernick, however, are saying such asinine things as college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb. He Tweeted the following in response to this controversy: First, the entire point here is that Kaepernick is thinking above and beyond himself. Shouldn’t he be applauded, not criticized, for putting societal problems ahead of his paycheck? What Gottlieb (and others who have written similar things such as this) are essentially saying is that a black man should stay quiet because a very rich white man is paying him a lot of money to do his job… which, in the end, is making that rich white man a lot more money. We have no doubt Kaepernick is grateful for his situation and well aware that America is the best country on Earth. We also hope he’s doing a lot more about the racial strife in this country that just sitting down during the national anthem. But are people really saying that it’s more patriotic to simply stand up during the playing of a song than to make a gesture that aims to help bring about equality? Because that belief is just ridiculous.

Farrah Abraham: Sophia Made Me Buy That $64K Engagement Ring!

It's OK to shift the blame to you kids from time to time, like if you fart in public. It's not ok to blame them for forcing you to buy yourself an engagement ring , as much as Farrah Abraham would like to believe. Abraham explained to MTV why she ended up buying a ring that she thought off-again boyfriend Simon Saran was going to A) propose with B) pay her back for. Welp, neither happened, and Abraham is now the reluctant owner of a 14-carat ring. Abraham explained that she and her daughter, Sophia were on a Disney cruise in the Bahamas for Sophia's birthday.  While they were docked at one of the cruise's port-of-calls, they perused the jewelry stalls together. Sophia said she wanted Abraham to get an engagement ring, so Abraham did the logical thing and called Saran to see if he was open to making it official. “He had pictures, he was seeing it [the ring]…he was talking to the owner of the store,” Abraham recalled. “I was left with the impression that he was really buying it, and it wasn't a big deal that I purchased it.” If I could just interject…if Saran was actually serious about proposing, why would he allow Abraham to purchase something in another country? That might be beside the point.  Carry on! “It was a great thing that he was involved,” Abraham said “And my daughter and I got to make something special so that she felt she was involved in an engagement.” Alas, nothing is as it seems, and for all their oohing and aahing over a piece of jewelry, the engagement has yet to happen. “But it turned out not being as nice as I thought it was,” Abraham said, looking disappointed. Exactly how much did Abraham end up spending on her ring? “It's was $64,000 initially, though he got it down to $36,000,” she said with a laugh,”and I thought I was going to be paid back. “But we're not dating anymore and I don't really care.” It's unclear where Saran stands on this purchase, and why he allegedly gave it the green light.
